[Veritas-bu] Restore tape is being requested on the wrong tape library

2006-03-13 Thread Patricia Harmon

I have a restore that is requesting 6tapes, the 1st tape is loaded from tape library 2 and runs fine then the second tape gets requested from tape library 2 also even though the second tape is intape library 1. The tape may have been in that library at one time but it is now in our off-site library(tape library 1)and the followingcommands verify that is in the off-site library. Everything shows robot 1 hastape S00054.

Any ideas how I can make this restore look for each tape in its correct library?

Thanks for any help.
Pat

[Veritas-bu] Restore tape is being requested on the wrong tape library

2006-03-13 Thread andrew . x . smith

Hi Patricia,

from my understanding of your problem I think Mark's suggested reason is a red herring.

I think the reason you do not understand the behaviour being exhibited is you have made some false assumptions about the logic NBU uses when performing a restore. The logic which causes this is very simple, NBU will always attempt to restore an image from the media server that performed the backup unless forced to do otherwise. So when u kick of the restore if the tape is not present in a library which is connected to the media server (it doesnt have to be in the same library so long as its in a library connected to the same original media server) that performed the backup then it will sit there until you manually insert the required tape(s). If you want to perform the restore from another media server you must use the FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER option in the master server bp.conf. But be careful as this option will force ALL restores to the alternate media server until you remove/undo the setting,

thanks Andy.

The restore is not managed by what library owns the tape. A restore, by =
default, requests all tapes that contain the *primary* image for the =
data to be restored regardless of the location of the tape. If this =
offsite tape contains copies of images that are also on local tapes, =
then you need to change the onsite copies to be marked as the primary =
copies.
=20
There's a bpchangeprimary command for this.
=20
Depending on how you might be creating the copy, you can manage the =
primary tape designation using Vault, ITC, or bpduplicate.

Pat,

As long as youre are using the same
Master/Media servers and your tape library drives can be seen from the media
server doing the restore, you should only have to re-inventory library 1 and
2. This will sync your volume database on all the servers.

Thanks,
Judi Gordon
