Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrade/Migrate master server from 5.0/Linux to6.0/Solaris

2007-03-08 Thread Paul Keating
Catalog format from linux to solaris is compatible, but from 5.x to 6.x
is not.

Migrate from linux to Solaris maintaining V5.x, then upgrade to 6.x

2007-03-08 Thread Rongsheng Fang
Thank you Paul! That's good news. Do you know if the databases (like the
ones under /usr/openv/netbackup/db and /usr/openv/volmgr/database) are
compatible between Linux and Solaris if they both run NBU 5.x?

Thanks,

Rongsheng

It looks like you are going from 5.x to 6.0, the catalog format changes
and a new EMM is created which is part
of the upgrade process. I suggest you consult the upgrade Guide.

Moving from linux to solaris, the catalog format will be the same, so no
problem there, as long as you keep the name of the old and new servers
the same.

However, given the choice, I'd probably stay with Linux, and just go to
a newer more power hardware platform.

 Hi,

We'll be doing upgrades to our current backup infrastructure.
 Currently
our master server is running NBU 5.0 MP5 on a Red Hat
 Enterprise Linux
ES release 2.1 (Panama) on a Dell server. The new master
 server will be
running NBU 6.0 on a Sun SPARC server (not yet sure which
 model at this
 point).

Some said that the catalog format was compatible between 5.x and 6.0,
and some said it's not. Can somebody confirm this?

Here is my thoughts:

1) if the catalog format is compatible between 5.x and 6.0, then I'll
just copy /usr/openv/netbackup/db and /usr/openv/volmgr/database from
the old Linux master to the new Solaris server.

2) if the catalog format is not compatible between 5.x and 6.0, then
I'll upgrade the current 5.x Linux master to 6.0, then copy everything
from /usr/openv/netbackup/db and /usr/openv/volmgr/database to the new
Solaris mater running 6.0.

Any problems there?

Thanks,

Rongsheng

things that include policies, catalogs and other DBs. Has anybody done

this before? What would be the best way to import the data including
policies, catalogs, and other information from the old Linux master to

the new Solaris master? I heard that this kind of migration was not
supported by Veritas. Is that true?

 Thanks,
