Re: [Veritas-bu] Adding a DataDomain VTL need advice
Hi We just finished adding DataDomain to our environment, and did not use VTL. We use CIFS and NFS and evertything is working fine. -- Carl Stehman Distributed Services Pepcoholdings, Inc. 701 Ninth St NW Washington DC 20068 202-331-6619 John Meyers Sent by: veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu 10/19/2009 08:58 AM To veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu cc Subject Re: [Veritas-bu] Adding a DataDomain VTL need advice Jeff Lightner wrote: > Make sure you understand that fibre for the Data Domain is an add on so > costs extra. No extra NB licenses costs involved either. Just wish we had the FC bandwidth available to us. In the couple weeks we've been using it, we've been seeing pretty phenomenal compression and de-dup rates. Re: [Veritas-bu] Adding a DataDomain VTL need advice
Wayne, We have a couple of DD690s (1 Appliance, 1 Gateway) and I've really got only good things to say about them. They're easy to setup and configure (VTL and NFS). You might want to consider what your retention periods will be for the data you keep on it. We use 3 months max for the VTL, and anything over goes to Physical Tape for offsite storage. At www.datadomain.com there is a pointer to a Best Practices guide for Netbackup. Personally, I would be uneasy with this, because in the event of a catastrophic failure with your VTL (as highly unlikely as it is) your backups are gone. If you are a smaller shop, this risk is acceptable. On the upside, the performance increase is going to phenomenal. We just replaced a non-deduping EMC VTL with a newer one. One of the things that NetBackup required was to actually emulate the EMC virtual library. Otherwise, you will run into some licensing issues. No biggie, the EMC could emulate as many drives and as many tapes as the physical disk storage would allow. There is probably something similar with the Data Domain. Re: [Veritas-bu] Adding a DataDomain VTL need advice
Make sure you understand that fibre for the Data Domain is an add on so costs extra. In our planning we were going to do fibre but didn't order the add on so ended up having to do GigE with NFS mounts instead. To get throughput we wanted we had to work on doing network aggregation. Having said all that the Data Domains work pretty much as advertised and the high compression/deduplication numbers are a reality.
