Something else to consider is that end of support for 5.x is in October.

We're having wonderful luck with 6.0MP4. It's fixed a bunch of issues
related to de-staging DSSUs. Backing up about 60 servers/night. 1 Master
(Win) and 1 Media (Linux). I was recently told by my SE that 6.5 will be as
stable as MP4. And engineering's viewing it as MP5. We'll see, but I'm
going to have to go to 6.5 for Exchange 2007 support, as well as a 64 bit
windows client.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Taking the plunge to upgrade from 5.1 MP4 to6.0 MP4

2007-05-10 Thread Curtis Preston
Stability is more important than functionality. I'm familiar with the
6.5 feature set, and I'm excited about it's release, but I'm not so
excited about it that I'd recommend upgrading to it just after it comes
out, especially for companies where upgrading the downgrading is a major
ordeal, such as those who have to deal with validated systems. I'd take
6.0 MP4 over 6.5 or 6.5 MP1 any day. I'd let those who really need
those wizbang 6.5 features upgrade to it and test it out for me for a
while before I jump on it. ;) This has nothing to do with Symantec.
It's my standard policy for any major infrastructure package. So if you
adopt that mentality, I'd say I'll be waiting until AT LEAST Q1 2008
before upgrading to recommending an upgrade to 6.5.

I also concur with the comments that the upgrade from 5.1 to 6.0 was
major (from an infrastructure standpoint) and the upgrade from 6.0 to
6.5 is relatively minor in comparison.

A few reasons:

A long time ago it became clear that waiting for the next thing was a
good way of never moving forward because something is always in the
pipeline.

The next thing is often called vaporware because all the bells and
whistles they tell you it is going to have vaporize (disappear) in the
actual release.

Vendors don't always meet expected (or even announced) release dates for
new software.

You might actually have cycles now to do it that you won't have in the
future.

You may be wishing to implement new hardware in your environment (e.g.
we're getting Data Domain) and want to understand any differences the
new

software does to your existing hardware so you'll understand later what
was introduced by the new software and what was introduced by the new
hardware.

Given the major shift between 5.1 and 6.0 in the way NBU does things
upgrading to 6.5 later will likely not be as major a change (somewhat
like going from 4.5 to 5.1 wasn't that big a deal).

Anyway we're just preparing to take the plunge ourselves so I can't say
how easy it is. My opinions are formed mainly by reading this forum
and by what our (not Symantec) vendor says about it.

We have an environment that is under strict change control and if we are
going to upgrade we are going to wait just a bit longer for the version
that has more features in it. Why go for 6.0 now, when you might want
to do the upgrade to 6.5 in just a few months?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Taking the plunge to upgrade from 5.1 MP4 to6.0 MP4

2007-05-10 Thread Dominik Pietrzykowski

I agree (with Curtis), if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If the current
version is doing what you need and is running fine then don't change unless
you have to (eg stay on supported version).

A lot of people moved to version 6.0 for hot catalogue backups, new client
support and SSO being properly built in.

I did the upgrade at a previous place because of BMR and then didn't end up
using it. I was quite upset since we went to it when only MP1 was around and
had various scheduling issues. We loved version 5.1 MP4

6.0MP4 does seem OK but I still see some scheduling issues although I also
need to do another nbcc so that could be it too.

There's some wise words from Dave at cox.net . I have seen the same here in
Aus, many people have done the upgrade too quickly. I even know of some
Symantec guys that did it without running nbcc. That has changed, I think
everyone knows that it should be used. I am even considering doing it every
few months just to be extra safe.

So, in summary, work out if you really need to upgrade and if you do, be
prepared. But don't be too over cautious, make sure you are always on a
supported version and be ready to move when support is ending..

All the best with backups/restores,

Dom

Agree with Ed - In fact I was referring to a few hundred tapes, but
thousands would mean you could potentially end up marrying your Tape Library
and never having an outside life again :-)

From what I've heard from Symantec and saw on this list, fresh install
of NBU6 and import will work better.

This is neither recommended nor practical in most cases. With several
thousand tapes, an import will take *years*.
