Nev, i think you do know exactly what to do...go smaller.and
smaller and smaller, until you find the size that'll fool 'em.
Gary, very hip of you to throw Steinbeck in there..i grew up not so far
from the Salinas (underground in Spanish), Valley in Calif., and have driven
through, and spent time there, dozens of times..same for the Monterey
Bay area.

What an absolutely stunning stream. What a wonderful place to fish.

I have fished this particular stream since the mid to late 70's and it has
always had a bit of angling pressure.
With the advent of catch and release and greater angling pressure I think
the fish are much more wary than they used to be. In the old days, it
didn't matter too much what fly you used as the fish were hungry and
opportunistic and probably had not been caught before.
I have fished some tough waters in the past such as spring creeks in
Montana where presentation and fly size is important, but these fish had me
absolutely stumped.
There were two entirely different situations. In the first, it was clear
that the fish were feeding on small mayflies. They may have been taking
emergers as well but I tried a small deer hair emerger tied Klinkhammer
style. I probably should have tried a fluorocarbon 6X tippet as the water
was so clear that my tippet showed. Instead, I rubbed it with degreaser so
that it would sink for the last few inches.
The second spot was entirely different with fast broken water and a deep
pool following a riffle and splashy rises but no visible insects. Everything
we threw at them was ignored.
It has become a bit of a challenge and I would like to go back and try
again, but I don't know for the life of me what to try apart from even
smaller flies.
The first pool was just downstream and around the corner from the picture.

Neville,
I think all trout fishermen have had some version of your
experience.
It really
gets to you when the fish are doing splashy rises ( caddis emergers ?)
within feet of your feet. Even knowing what they're after
doesn't always
help.
And I'm sure, at least for me it will happen again. But I
don't enjoy
confrming
John Steinbeck's ..my private conviction ..whoever pits his
intelligence
against a fish and loses has it coming.
