Re: [VFB] Joyce- dry fly hackles

2009-12-02 Thread Joyce Westphal
thanks. Joyce

  Joyce,
More accurately it would be the 'butt end' that I'm tying down, but that's
not totally right, either. With saddle hackles being a foot long (or
more) and all of one size along the length, there is no longer a 'small end'
or a 'large end'- it's all the 'sweet spot'. One reason to tie the butt end
(or bird-side) down is that it's easier to fasten down than the tip
end. Second, it is less likely to pull out from under the thread, because
of the 'knap' (like a hair follicle being one-directional for friction).
Since many flies can be tied from the same hackle, you're rarely really
working with the actual 'base' of the hackle, and that is usually trimmed
off because of a wee bit of body web at the base.

I don't have AK's book, so I'll have to look up what he does. John Schaper
and I worked this up when he was the chief hackle grader at Whiting Farms
about 8 years ago. The 'new' genetic saddles with the very fine main stems
is what allowed us to reverse-hackle flies without laying down hackles. This
does not look near as nice using neck hackles, as the stem is thicker. We
developed a pattern of hackle overlay that was especially useful in size 18
and smaller 'Winger-style' dry flies. Since Wingers tie in with a thin base
stem, it's possible to make the hackling much more dense at the wing tie-in
 points.

So two things were necessary for this approach- the genetic saddle hackles
and Winger necks, both of which we had a warehouse full at our disposal.

Don, your fly follows what A K Best does in his book, Production Fly Tying.
Do you tie in large end or small end of the feather first? Thanks. Joyce

2009-12-02 Thread Hans Weilenmann
Joyce,

I prefer the approach as illustrated in the below step by step for a
variety of reasons. I wrote a piece on the subject for the
Flyfisherman magazine web site, but in their recent site re-vamp it
got lost, so no working url for it.

However, try this step by step which shows my preferred approach.

[VFB] Catskill Dry Flys

2009-12-02 Thread jim phillips

Singlebarbed

Steely resolve in the face of the Perfect Feather

Posted: 01 Dec 2009 11:02 PM PST

Per request I’ll continue to post additional fly beautification tips in a
weekly format. These will comprise hardscrabble lessons learned somewhere after
beginner and before complete mastery.

Most tiers that tiptoe around the craft use their fishing instincts when no
instructor or book is available. Most of us started as dry fly fishermen and
it’s not surprising that most new fly tiers attempt the dry fly more often than
nymphs.

… which is too bad. Tying nymphs is far more forgiving than the delicate and
strictly proportioned Catskill dry. A novice tier can hold up some lumpy
looking stonefly and if critiqued can respond with “ … well, all the stoneflies
in _ Creek are fat.”

… and if I had been the unfortunate to task the fellow – I’d blush like hell
and backpedal in a hurry – never having fished over “fatty” Plecoptera …

The Catskill dry is completely unforgiving. It’s territory and techniques have
been practiced for more than a hundred years – and artistic license must be
defended, even for expert tiers.

One of those oft-mentioned-quickly-forgotten principles is made more difficult
in the presence of the Perfect Feather …

Above are two examples of the Perfect Feather; a foot long #16 grizzly saddle
hackle, and a well marked (lefty) Wood duck flank feather with perfect tips.
Both are treated with awe by the owning fly tier – and both can cause your fly
to suffer cruelly if you’re not diligent…

You’re a kid in a candy store, all those precious tips are in a straight line
and unbroken. Giddy, you fail to clip the center stem because it’s perfect too.

You forgot that all feathers are either a left or a right, even foot long
saddles and untouched Wood duck flank.

The wood duck will be your undoing twice. In the first case the stem will cock
one wing to the left, and in the second, the stem center will retain 9 or 10
fibers attached and you’ll have to compensate by yanking fibers from the far
wing to the near side to equalize that natural bulk.

The picture at right shows the Perfect feather now clumped together with the
center stem included. Note how all’s well – there’s no clue that anything is
other than perfectly straight.

You’re thinking of dumping all your “lemon-dyed mallard” – as the sight of the
wood duck with its pristine coloration, fine markings, and perfect tips – make
it so much more pleasurable to work with – even justifying the hideous cost to
lay in a goodly supply.

Unfortunately like Ulysses and the Sirens – their song is so beautiful, you’re
ignoring the approaching rocks …

Now you can see why you remove the center stem. The left side is thin and has a
different angle than the right wing.

The cause is simple. You had to pull the loose fibers over to the right side to
balance the two clumps – leaving the left, just the stem section. It’s thin
because the fibers are attached to the center spine and have no “give” to move
around.

We were lured onto those rocks consciously …

The picture at right shows the same wing as before. I’ve removed the wing from
the shank, clipped out the center stem and retied it back on.

Note the difference with the picture above. the left wing is relaxed, the
right wing is less dense and tighter – as you didn’t have to pull everything to
that side to compensate for the stem on the left.

That foot-long Grizzly saddle is just as bad. You’re used to applying six or
eight turns of hackle to your dry flies, but the lure of virtually unlimited
hackle means you add four or five extra wraps and crowd the head. Crowding
means fibers trapped in the knot that’ll wick the head cement right into the
eye.

It’s the lure of the Perfect Feather. You won’t find it mentioned in any tome
or DVD, and only your steely resolve to overcome it’s sweet song …

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-12-02 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
The truth is that live-bait fishing has a long and noble history. Live bait
was totally unknown to the early caveman, who had to make do with a rather
limited assortment of dry flies, nymphs, and a few streamers. One day, whether
out of exasperation or simple impatience, a caveman made a backcast with a gray
hackle he had not bothered to remove from a sage hen. Instantly, it was taken
by a brontosaurus. The caveman was elated by his discovery, even though it was
several centuries before anyone learned how to take the brontosaurus off the
hook.

Re: [VFB] Rope Dubbing DVD

2009-12-02 Thread Don Ordes
Keith,
We tried to do something about the music, but that was the best
non-copyrighted stuff he had. (You aren't the only one with better taste in
tunes) Everything really good that I liked came with a royalty fee. Next
video I'm hiring a musician- probably a harmonicat blues dude.

You can see that I didn't waste any time on the DVD, and yet I still didn't
get a half-dozen sequences in that I planned, and some other things. I
planned it to be a start/stop/try-it-out format. That's why there's DVD #2
coming if I can get in the black $-wise on this one.

You can also see the value in investing in professionals. I didn't want to
do a DVD if it was going to look like run-of-the-mill fly-tying videos. So
we spent time in planning the scenes, videoing a rough draft from mustiple
angles, and then re-videoing with the bugs worked out. Then we sat in front
of the editing program for many hours putting scenes together. When I was
satisfied, I felt others would be satisfied.

It won't take so long next time, as my learning curve has flattened out. It
will still take a lot of work, but it will be efficient work.

What I'm hoping to get now is photos posted of everyone's work. And then
when my website is finished, a page up to post them all with tier's names
and recipes.

Thanks for buying my DVD. Hope you enjoy rope-dubbing.

DonO

2009-12-02 Thread Anthony Spezio
Keith,
Like you, it came to an end too soon. I had been tying on and off for 20 years
and almost full tine the past 20 years but I have not seen this process done
that way. Don showed me a bit at the Sowbug several years ago but I really did
not have the time to take it in. I was too involved with the show.
Make it here in March and you might get to see this done in person.

Don showed me a bit at the Sowbug several years ago

Don spent a few minutes in our motel room at that same Sowbug and
showed me how to do it. I've been using no other method since.

And Don's DVD taught me a lot of the little tricks that I didn't know.

I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.

Jimmy, I'm obviously a small timer. Have fished the Missouri river in South
Dakota (LOTS), Provo River UT, , Illiamna AK,, Deschka IAK
and Hobblecreek (actually a river) Ut. My favorites are the Provo (natch as
I live here now) and the Missouri, in SD just off Whitlock's Bay at
Teacher's point..some great walleye and pike fishing with a few salmon and
bass all thrown in there. I'll be interested in the rivers stats. joyce

p.s.:

Our club had Mr. Big Name Fly Tyer here a week ago. He was showing
us how to tie flies. He tied one of his with a loose variation of
DonO's rope dubbing method (and did a very poor job of it).
Fortunately, he didn't blame Don for the technique (nor give him
credit either).

Any further comments will have to be made off-list.

Re: [VFB] RIVERS WE'VE FISHED

2009-12-02 Thread Dan
Man;

A couple of you have fished in my old stomping grounds! In Michigan I have fly
fished the Au Sable, both above the generator plant and below it near Hale, the
Rifle River, Paint Creek, Clinton River, Stony Creek, Pere Marquette, and a
couple of others whose names escape me at the moment. I have also fly fished
the Sabine, Trinity, and Neches Rivers in Texas, and the Calcashieu River in
Louisiana.

Hey Bob and Ed. Where did you fish the Clinton River and Paint Creek? In
Rochester??? I grew up there. I caught my first trout in Paint Creek, where it
crosses 1st St near where Avon Tube used to be.

Tight lines,

If at first you don't succeed, maybe you shouldn't try sky diving!
