Jerry.
We are in Eagle nest now and the lake is open for fishing and
camping, but all Federal Lands and State Parks are still closed due very dry
conditions and a very high fire danger. Red River is closed, Cimerron River
through the State Park is closed. I have seen some nice trout coming out of
the lake, heard of a few salmon. From shore and boat.

Well it looks like trout fishing in Arkansas is going to be sad
this year again, to much water.

But, I do have a 12 day trip planned for Eagle Nest, NM in August,
any suggestion are welcome
as to water, flies, or technique.

[VFB] Larry Johnson Shadow Box, now Larry Johnson Memorial Swap?

2011-07-15 Thread Tom Davenport
Larry's passing left me with a moral dilemma, my wife and I had
previously planned to make a trip down to Cedar City, Utah to enjoy a
mini-vacation and a couple of evenings of Shakespeare at the annual
festival held there, leaving us out of town for Larry's viewing and
funeral. If it had just been me I would have opted out and stayed to
honor Larry, but he was my friend (my wife had only met Larry briefly)
and I knew how much my wife had been looking forward to this trip. I
opted to spend the time with my wife, but on the way down we stopped
to visit Shauna. We had a nice visit, she gave me more details about
Larry's passing. She said the end came very quickly, with no
suffering. Shauna feels like a blood clot was the culprit, but no one
will ever know, since (I assume) no autopsy was done. She has decided
to forgo any "what if" thinking and move on to the happiness and
comfort of her faith, family and friends.

We talked about the plans for the funeral, it was planned be a
celebration of Larry's life, with speakers from family and friends and
music! Larry's life was spent as a choral instructor, he touched
thousands of lives in his 20 year career at a local high school and
last 15 or so at Utah Valley University (a large community college
with over 30,000 students). A choir was formed for the funeral,
consisting of family, friends and former students. I'm sure the
service was wonderful and a great comfort to Larry's wife and family!

So, that brings us to the point of this email. We returned last
night, and at 3:30 this morning I lay awake wondering about having a
final memorial for Larry to give Shauna a parting "hug" from Larry's
friends on the VFB list. What I had in mind was a fly from each of
Larry's friends or admirers along with a story (with pictures if
possible) of any memory you have of Larry. A picture of the fly, the
participant , along with their "Larry pictures" would be complied in
a nice book to accompany the actual flies themselves, which could be
presented in some sort of wall hanging. Well, I went on line and
found out a shadow box was already in the works, which is great, so I
would like to volunteer to produce a companion book.

Here is how it could work:

1. If you were in the 2011 Catskill swap, you could send me a picture
of yourself, along with an anecdote, and any Larry pictures you might
have. If you never met Larry personally, it could be a story about a
particular list converstation, or you could simply be listed as a "VFB
list member and friend". A picture of the fly would be nice as well,
I could take it myself, or perhaps Peggy could do it before it was
placed in the shadow box.

2. If you were not in the above swap, but wanted to participate, you
could send your fly to Peggy, and pictures and anecdotes directly to
me. I would compile your story and pictures.

A deadline needs to be set if this idea becomes "official". Right now
it is just a suggestion on my part.

Peggy and others, what do you think? Would this be a good idea, or
should we just keep it simple and go with the original plan? Either
way, I would like a fly of mine to be included.
