[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
I fished a little while ago with a man, not in his first youth, who had wasted the flower of his life on business and golf and gardening and motoring and marriage, and had in his way postponed his intiation to trout fishing far too long! [VFB] Original hook-swap background, for those entering Part 1.
- Original Message - From: Don Ordes To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 9:28 AM Subject: Re: [VFB] Hook Swap- new numbers, excise tax To those interested in the hook co-op swap: 1. I just called Hagan's to check on this 10% excise tax thing, because I've never had to pay that on products before: Federal Tax Exemptions: (from the web) a.. Manufacturers' unions and industry lobbyists work to reduce the amount of excise taxes levied on industries, goods and services. The United States Congress passes new exemptions and tax refunds each year, while earlier exemptions expire or are extended. Domestically made and imported fishing and archery products are exempt from federal excise taxes, with later legislation exempting certain types of wooden arrows. It doesn't look to me like Hagan's should be collecting these taxes at all, but they are. She says the buyer could fill out a tax form and not have to pay it- too much trouble. She also said that there were errors on the pricing, and they just happened to be the hooks on my list. Go figure how that happened...are they reading these posts? But the cross-over price between models is still comparable. The price hikes applied to #'s 300, 135, 125. The hikes average about 1 cent per hook. #320 305 did not change. Here's my comparison math- check me*: Hagan's: 1000 #12 Mod. #125 (emerger hook) @ $38.04 = 3.8 cents per hook. My catalog from major wholesale supplier for 25 #12 similar hooks is $3.28 = 13.12 cents per hook. One web retailer lists similar hooks for $5.99 ($6) for 25 hooks which is 24 cents per hook.** Cabela's lists a similar hooks for a 50-pak at $6, which is half at that at 12 cents per hook. **You can buy 100 hooks from them for $18.00 and that would be 18 cents per hook. The #18 same hook (same mod. #) went up to $41 per 1000 at Hagan's, which would be 4.1 cents per hook. *Unless my pre-surgery drugs are still working, my math seems correct. Those interested can do some research to see if they can find comparable hooks at a more attractive price. 2. ORDERING the hooks should be done by the meister, from my conversations with Hagan's. Having 10 buyers for one order would be a lot of paperwork they say, and 10 orders would be 10 shipping prices. A 1000 hooks average would fit into a coffee mug on average, so 10 sets would be about a shoe-box +/-. We would all have to send $*** to the meister trust that Rick would go through with the purchase, and that wouldn't be a problem for me. *** Total cost for hooks + SH for Rick each package. Rick needs to buy 100 baggies large enough to hold 100 of the largest hooks, so we could cover that and get our bags with the hooks. With the price hikes, the hooks are ranging from 3 to 4 cents each. A mentioned, these are probably Dai Riki, which Byard used to sell, which I have used and have no complaints. So I leave it now back in your hands to progress this if you still care to do so and think it's worth the effort to do it and work out the bugs for this type of co-op swap. The Whiting co-op swaps were successful, so this should also be. DonO - Original Message - From: Rick Zieger To: VFB Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 7:58 AM Subject: [VFB] Hook Swap 10 swappers. Fw: [VFB] PART 2-- Hook Co-op swap like the Whiting Co-op swap- suggestion
To the hook-swappers, This is run like the Whiting co-op hackle swap, so the meister again is key. I need to get a new catalog, too. DonO - Original Message - From: Don Ordes To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, July 26, 2010 8:31 AM Subject: Re: [VFB] Hook Co-op swap like the Whiting Co-op swap- suggestion Rick, Mine are 1st choice and then options. I tried to pick the most versatile hooks for the bulk of my tying. This will make a good trial swap- call it the 'trout and small panfish hook swap'. We can also shoot for (if this works out) a warm-water/bass/panfish swap, and then for a saltwater swap, but the saltwater hooks are more expensive (but still way less than retail). I'll start it off: (You'll need the catalog or go online- www.Hagansfish.com.) 800-541-4586 #320: (Dry fly hooks) Sizes 10, 12, 14 optional #300 in same sizes OK (tad bit longer) #280: (hopper hooks- will also work as Klinkhammer style dries, parachutes) Sizes 6, 8, 10, 12 optional Drop to sizes # 10, 12, 14, 16 #270 (Stones and wets) Sizes 4, 6, 8 (I like these because the fly can be tied undersized for the hook, giving a wider range and more holding capability) These are a starting point only- gotta start somewhere. 10 swappers have to settle on 10 hook styles and sizes. That's why the swaps need to be separated- too many options over the broad span of fishing.
