Alan,

The tube that I am using already has the sparkles within the plastic (I
got it from canadiantubefly company) so there is no need to coat the
tube. The problem with coating the tube with glue with the sparkles is
that it may come of if it cracks or gets damaged by toothy fish.

Really cool.
It has stirred some imagination , and I am thinking of ways to coat a

I am also thinking of trying some buck tail material.

2013-02-03 Thread Don Ordes
Alan,
When I'm tying salties, I keep a little bottle of head cement off to the side
with glitter mixed in. A clear fingernail polish works just as well, shake it
up and use the brush inside to apply. Do this on the heads also before you
glue on the eyes.

Bucktail flies are great but don't hold up as well as synthetics. My best
bonito fly is a slim 3 buck tail fly- black over chartreuse over white, with
red gills eyes. I've caught jacks and rainbow runners on them also.

Re: [VFB] Fly of the week- glitter

2013-02-03 Thread Don Ordes
Ashley.

I mostly use my vinyl head cement (mixed with glitter) and it's flexible and
durable enough to hold up.
That way I can choose the glitter I want- have about 30 containers of it- all
sorts and colors.

No matter what you do, the mortality-by-loss rate of saltwater flies is high.
I don't mind investing a lot in the fly as it's a lot worse to get skunked
after travelling to far to fish. So I make sure I tie many, enough to catch
and share, and don't worry too much if none make it home again.

One thing to think about is that the fish (some species) get to 'know' a fly,
and won't bite again on it. This has happened countless times with dorado. I
think they see it stuck in the mouth of a fellow fish and actually become wary
of it. So if after 2 or 3 casts using a fly I just caught one on, I swap to
something totally different, like a minnow to a squid, shrimp, or baby crab.
If we move and fish a different school, the first fly works again, supporting
my thinking.

In Baja, I like to stop in on the way back to the shore and fish snappers (to
eat) at a shallow outcropping of rock close to the shore that has a strong
current over it. They are only 5 to 10 pounds mostly, and I can haul them in
with the 14wt. But if a large one bites, it's so long to the fly as they drag
it into the rocks and the leader is immediately cut. If I can get the snapper
away from the bottom, it's a fun fight unless a predator chomps it.

Re: [VFB] Fly of the week- glitter

2013-02-03 Thread ashley

DonO,

What brand or type of glitter do you use?

The tubes with the sparkle that I am using comes in several colours so I
can vary the colour that way. Changing the fly as you suggest appears to
be a good idea else where for the reasons that you say. The fly in the
picture that I emailed is liable to change as I tie a batch up for a
number of reasons, depending on the mood I'm in and if I think it can be
improved in some way. I often take to many with me, in various colour
variations as well as sizes. I'm not really bothered about losing them.
Just don't want to find a fly that works and not run out half way
through the trip especially if I have traveled a long way. Besides, I
don't have uni assignments any more so I have alot more time on my
hands. I've also found that varying trout flies in some way also helps.

Re: [VFB] Fly of the week- Alan

2013-02-03 Thread Alan Di Somma
Great idea Don. That's what I like so much about this list.

Different ways of doing the Sam thing no matter the country.

Yesterday I had a guy in the shop from BC, and after talking for a while you
discover how alike all us fly tiers are. We talked about tube flies and told me
he had his Acupuncturist save the plastic tubes the needles come in. I told him
that I got mine the same way. I then told him to get some of the tubing from
intravenous feeds to hold the hook in place. He tells me he uses polar bear fur
in a lot of his things instead of buck tail. Must be nice to live where they
are not outlawed.

 Alan,
When I'm tying salties, I keep a little bottle of head cement off to the side
with glitter mixed in. A clear fingernail polish works just as well, shake
it up and use the brush inside to apply. Do this on the heads also before
 you glue on the eyes.

Bucktail flies are great but don't hold up as well as synthetics. My best
bonito fly is a slim 3 buck tail fly- black over chartreuse over white, with
red gills eyes. I've caught jacks and rainbow runners on them also.

 Really cool.

It has stirred some imagination , and I am thinking of ways to coat a clear
tube with glue and submerge it in sparkles.
I am also thinking of trying some buck tail material.

Good to have some new ideas...

 Thank You,
 Alan Di Somma

 Hi Alan,

The tube is plastic with sparkles which is why I chose it for the fly.

 Asley;

That is a great use for a tube fly.
I have been looking for a good bass fly and this certainly fit the bill.
Are you using a metal tube?
I'm sure I could substitute craft hair or Puglisi hair?

 Hi All,

Seeing as though the list is a bit slow I thought I'd do a fly of the week.

I've recently been playing with tubes and some of what I got recently were
plastic with sparkle within the plastic. I decided that these cried out for
saltwater baitfish and this fly came to mind.

The wing is Congo hair and is supported with EZ tubing to help flair it a
little. The end is coloured nail varnish which is covered with epoxy. I
might change this to fabric paint with sparkles.
