Re: [VFB] Forest fires no rain.

2015-07-16 Thread Wes Wada
Hi Neville,

Feeling for your and your fisheries. We had a similar year last year in
Oregon.
This year, the weather has been bizarre. We were expecting an early spring
in due to a very warm, dry February. Then a long stretch of more normal,
cold, wet weather for spring. Then some heat, then super heat that broke
all sorts of records across the western USA for two weeks.

We had very little snow in the winter, but lots of rain, so the reservoirs
filled. They are emptying pretty quickly, with some already at fall
levels, and water levels dropping below the boat ramps. If we don't get at
least a normal winter of snowpack, we are simply screwed. And the El Nino
forecast is not favorable.

IMO, the main effect of this nutso weather has really affected the
quantity, quality and consistency of bug hatches. People fishing
tailwaters have been fine, but the lakes have been very difficult to fish.
Then, there is the famed Deschutes River which is having all sorts of
problems. See Deschutes River Alliance
http://www.deschutesriveralliance.org/.

I am getting in a fair amount of camping and fishing, with five rainbows
over five pounds this year so far. That includes two fish over 26 that
ran 6-1/2 and 7 pounds. Hopefully the best is yet to come this season, as
next season is not assured at all.

I certainly wish there was some way to get some of our water to you. We
finally had two dry days in a row. That's the first time in several weeks.

You are certainly doing a lot better than me. I have only had one

41/4 pound rainbow but the fishing this year was certainly not as good as the
previous 2 years. I agree that the bug hatches are inconsistent or even
non-existent compared with the same time in previous years. I suspect that I
should have taken my trip 3-4 weeks earlier. In June we normally fish
chironomids and dries when a hatch takes place. This year there were very few
surface bugs and it is the first time in many years that I did not have a
 fish on a dry fly.

The Province of BC recently announced a category 4 extreme fire risk and
water shortage. Sport fishing has been temporarily banned for the lower half
of Vancouver Island as the rivers are too low and the water temperatures too
high. The last few days have been a bit cooler and we even had a very minor
sprinkling of rain, but not enough to do any good. I have a fishing trip
planned to Sunday (day trip) but I am half expecting the Ministry to ban
fishing in the stream I am planning to fish.

No fishing here.  Too much flooding.  Too many storms.  We've been
getting 2-4 about every day for over a week. There's enough wind with
these things that lots of trees and/or big limbs are down. Of course
this causes massive power outages, etc.  Our power was out 8 hours today
from a storm that went through at noon.  Local utilities repairmen are
swamped.

And now another storm just passed through. It was just announced on the
news that the southern part of our county already has over 5,000 folks
without power from the current storm, which hasn't passed on out of that
area yet.  Thankfully we're on the Northern edge of the county.

Hello Peggy,

I am looking forward to meeting you in Bend for the annual FFF conclave.
The event, normally held in Livingston, Montana, is being held in Bend this
year for the 50th anniversary of FFF. The FFF was originally founded in
Oregon.

Is anybody else on VFB planning to be in Bend this August for the conclave?
