Once upon a time, in a land far ago & long away, we were wading Taneycomo. We had just taken a lunch break because the dam was generating & came back to fish the flooded grass as the water level was dropping, I had a large heavy olive bugger on, trying for browns. Caught a couple small ones when the wind cam tearing down the river valley. I started casting over my left shoulder as a result & made one too many back casts, & my left elbow stopped the fly. Even w/ forceps, I couldn’t get the leverage to pull it out & because the skin on my elbow was so tough, I couldn’t push it though either. I cut it off, retied & fished the rest of the afternoon. When we got back to the hotel, I tried pliers, no joy. Mike’s wife, who had trained as a nurse, couldn’t get it out either. I finally was able to make an incision w/ the scalpel in my first aid kit & push it far enough to cut the point off, barb was mashed down but wouldn’t back out. I still have the fly, kept it as the one that caught a turkey.

After that it didn't bother me. Several years ago Susan my wife was with me when I got stuck. The fly was buried. I asked her to help me get it out because I couldn't get a good grip on it. She took one look at it and said: "I'm not touching that." So today when I got home I showed her my finger with the fly still in it. I knew what she would say: "I'm not helping with this one either." We both laughed. "Maybe Life is just a memory. We come. We see. We go." Crooked Creek in southeastern Minnesota is a short 30 minute drive away. This was a KISS outing. Tenkara rod, a small box of Pink Squirrels, and polaroid glasses. At the first pool I caught a nice 14 inch brown. My next cast hooked a weed on the bank. I'm blaming the wind. Anyway while I was trying to retrieve the fly, Shadow my fishing dog ran by and dragged the line through my hand until my finger stopped the hook. I thought, this is no big deal. I will just back it out and keep fishing. It would not budge. And I didn't have my vest with the forceps clipped to it. I broke off the fly and went back to fishing. Caught four more before heading for home. Five fish total. Plus a big guy that broke off. 66 inches and about 170 lbs. At home I cut the hook with side cutter pliers and removed the point. I've always said my main reason for using barbless hooks is this: The "Catch" I most like to release is ME! I usually do the Tee shirt test on all my hooks. But I must have missed this one. Tight lines you all. But only if your hook is in a fish and not your hide. Gary -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group.
