Re: [VFB] Dirty Bug Yarn

Al -
Only 6 more years til the oldest goes to college, so... there's a chance?
;) In the meantime, there will always be my study/office and the formal
dining room that we won't use as such - will be where the kids do
homework, just without a table or desks (they're both autistic, trust me,
it works better that way). When we went there to look at the lot, there
were browns and rainbows sipping duns and spinners (or dries of some
variety, possibly emergers?), and this was in the middle of November
which is very odd given the season. I did go to the SUV and get the stream
thermometer and it read 49 degrees F... The creek is known for sulfur and
tan caddis, though not this time of year. I didn't see a hatch going on,
but MAN am I dreaming about it already! My son is equally excited. My
daughter is still very young, in elementary school, but has been asking me
if I could teach her to fly fish once we move in May. So... you might have
to fight for a good spot haha! But you're always welcome (once we move, of
course).

[VFB] Dirty Bug Yarn

2020-12-01 Thread Pete Gramp
I haven't seen any emails in a long while on the VFB, perhaps because of
the USA Thanksgiving holiday, but I have to share this. On a whim, and on
the recommendation of a fly tying buddy of mine, Tim Cammisa (you likely
know him from his YouTube videos), I tried out a new SemperFli product
called "Dirty Bug Yarn". At first, I thought this to be "just another
yarn," but it is anything but that! It comes in mottled colors, one of
which is as close to a 477 match as I have ever seen, and it comes in a
thinner-than-Antron-yarn, two-ply "strand" (though if it is 2-ply, I guess
it is a cord and not a strand). Somewhere between embroidery yarn
thickness and a single-ply of Antron yarn for thickness. Very minimally
shaggy - just enough, but not "chenille" shaggy. More like "mole fur
dubbing noodle" or "thin superfine dubbing noodle" fuzz. It is there, but
not much. The thing with this stuff is that it blends really well - it
doesn't look like you wrapped a cord around a hook. It looks like a
single, continuous body that is perfectly mottled and buggy looking. I
find it perfect for just about all small to medium gamefish flies (trout
and grayling is what I have in mind) from emergers to nymphs, dries to
parachutes. I even caught an 11" rainbow on a mini-bugger (size 14) with
this as the body material. That is about the biggest I would push it for
the hook *length,* though (not hook size, but length) because the dirty bug
yarn doesn't add much bulk to the hook, and it looks weird if you have a
very long and very skinny hook. At least, it looks odd (or "under-dressed"
to me. JStockard (jsflyfishing.com) carries this stuff - no affiliation,
but I know it isn't easy to locate, so that's the only reason I mention
this. But I would encourage you, if you have 5 quids to toss towards this
product, definitely try it out! The mottled colors not only look great
from a "fly fisher's" perspective, but they truly do catch more fish from a
"fish catching" perspective!
Again, I have no affiliation with SemperFli, JStockard, or anything
mentioned; I just wanted to rave about an awesome material that is a
game-changer for me.
Hope you are all well,
-Pete
