I'm here, just today starting a 10 month apprenticeship- Traditional
American Arts, supported by the NH Council for the Arts and National
Endowment for the Arts I will be mastering Full dress salmon flies.

My mentor is Larry Antonuk, of Keene, NH. He has several articles in Fly
Tyer and was the apprenticeship 3 years ago.

One of the parts of the agreement is to share what I learn so it get's
carried on for more generations.

Each year I try to host this swap, and each year I see much improvement
in the Catskill style dry's we get!

I've taken each set, with the location of the tyer, to show off at the
Catskill Fishing Center and Museum and each year some of the premier
tyer's of this genre have a great time looking, and we get some good
comments. But, they also have a great time looking at the different
variations in the participants flies and where that tyer is from.

So let's make it 12 for the Catskill Flies Swap 2011 and when I tie in
the Museum in August at the Jubilee celebration I'll put out each years
swap for display. Deadline June 1, in time for dry fly season in the
Catskills.

Re: [VFB] Your Dumbbell Eyes, You

2011-02-14 Thread Dail Graham
Wes- a thread base is not required but you can tie eyes over a thread base
if desired. I just tie the eyes on with the thread I am using to tie the fly.
I have tied eyes on with 3/0 14/0 ,Gellspun, Kevlar , monofilament, etc.
Just make sure you wrap the (thread wedge) under the eyes wrap under the eyes
overs the hook shank several wraps. The wedge tightens the figure eight
wraps. It is easy and fast. Dail Graham

Hi Dali,

Do you put down any kind of thread underbase first? What type of tying thread
do you like to use? I usually use monocord, but that's no longer manufactured
as a fly tying thread.

2010-02-11 Thread Dail Graham
I agree with Jerry, I vote for my Renzetti Traveler and I have a Clouser Arm
as a accessory and it really helps with large bass and musky streamers. I
started tying on a old Herters cast iron lever jaw vise (made in Pakistan
years ago) then a couple of Griffins. Gave them all to the grandkids. I need
to update my traveler with cam lock jaws. Maybe will do that after Sowlbug
this year. I have had no trouble getting parts for the traveler. The jaws are
very tough. I agree with tying with several vises and get what you are most
comfortable with. Dail

  Jimmy,

That's part of my plan for this summer- locating my toy-hauler trailer at
some fishing destination where I can get access for the phone and my pc. I'm
thinking of a dish/antenna system like I had down in Moab at the remote plant
site. I can set up the large ATV parking area at the back of the trailer as my
office- drop the back door level, put up the screen, and have an outdoor
office. Sound OK?

Then, instead of working when I want and tying when I want, and fishing when
I can get away, I could be fishing when I want, and then tying for the fishing,
and then working when I can break away from the water. My office-commute will
be on the ATV from the fishing spot back to the trailer.

Wanna join me? Going to have to eat campfire food.

I have no problems on the stream. My problems occur mostly at the
office. I'm thinking of moving my office to the stream.

Sorry about missing the daily quote today. Had terrible problems with my
e-mail. It just simply locked up every time I tried to
open an e-mail or download e-mails. After the third re-boot tonight,
everything settled down. It got so bad that I had to get
my e-mail via Webmail and since I don't have an address book there, I
didn't have addresses for the vfb, ffw and hcff to send
the QFTD. Hopefully it will stay fixed this time.

One thing I learned about asking a zillion questions when I first
joined here. If you are a lurker . or not a lurker, and you ask a question. ANY
question. no matter how simple it may seem. You can bet your last dollar that
there is somebody else out there who wanted to ask that very same question, but
were too shy, thought it was a dumb question etc.. I used to get off list
emails from ppl all the time telling me I'm glad you asked the question you
did, cause I have been wanting to ask that myself. Chuck

I belong to three (3) forums. Neither of the 3 get much use, and they have

  appears to have been removed.

However, the Lines End Online Fly Shop is still operational at:

Back before we went with Google, there was a Forum available on the
VFB website. There was also a Chat Room. It was a late night deal

Byard has lots of good deals right now, and some close out prices on

 Hallo,
I'm not really satisfied, but here is my 2nd attempt for this stillwater
 fly, Some remarks:

Hook is Partridge Grey Shadow, SH3, Sz. 8. Niflor finish. The photo
 isn't giving its grey shade.
 Black thread,
Some lead, and form a cigar like shape with the tying thread
Back and tail is peacock herl
Body the discussed tinsel. Before I wrap the tinsel I give the underbody
a slight coat with nail polish, and wrap the tinsel into the 'wet'
 underbody.
 Collar is orange hackle,
I snip a 'V' on top of the collar, before I forward 3 herls from the
back to the front in order to form the head.
Before I wrap the head, I twist the peacock herl with the tying thread
 to reinforce it

Mark- Thanks for your kind remarks. Sorry I could not get to your house after
the conclave dinner. I was called back to the resort and had to leave about
noon on sat. I did not get to the conclave dinner.Only cost me 30 bucks
but I hope the conclave can use it to some advantage. If this rain will slow
up to a cloudy drizzle I am going to shake my new spey line at a few muskies.
Will let you know how it turns out. I need to tie a couple of more mega
divers at least 9 to 10 inches long. The regional Muskie Tournament last
week end netted 43 muskies in 3 days and one day the wind was gusting to 40
mph. According to my buddies they could only troll in that wind and drag a 3
to 4 oz plug tough fishing to say the least. They all shake their heads at my
fly fishing for those critters however when they see my 43 inch female musk on
the wall they shut up. HM I wonder if I should host a fly fish only
tourn? I wonder what Misa would say. Tight lines and as they say back under
my rock. Dail

NO One, who's tyed 11 Sowbugs should have to submit
flies.imho..that kinna deal is why we had so many empty seats at
Conclave. That and the fact that people simply don't wanna come from far off
and only be given two sessionsyou'd have to be nuts to spend money on
gas, tolls, (possibly a baby-sitter), resturants, the dinner, hotel, fishing
license, silent and live auctions, raffles, etc., etc., etc..and only
tye two sessions.again..imho.
The idea that the people won't come and support the Conclave unless all the
tyers are nationally known is rediculas. .whoever's commin' to Conclave is
commin' to Conclave, because they feel the experience is gonna be worff it or
it aint, PERIOD! Tyers/fly anglers aren't stupidthey know they can
learn somethin' from every other tyer.no matter who it is..cept
maybe some beginner.but that level a tyer will not be in the seat. YOU,
should be..imho.

Tony, tyer attendance is low because the tying chair is working off the
same list every year. We have over 100 FFF members in our club and nobody got
asked to tie. In fact no contact was made to our club to see if anybody was
interested in tying nor has there ever been any contact of that sort. Last year
the Junior Tyer of the Year was not invited. When you work off the same list
every year, some folks die, some move away and some just stop showing up. It
doesn't take a wizard to figure that you eventually have a sparse room. 2 years
ago, when our club put on the Conclave, I convinced Toby to come back after he
swore he would never tie again. I called Bear and asked him to please invite
Toby and he told me to have him send in 6 flies for review and he'd get back to
him. When I started coming to Sowbug, I barely knew how to tie. You told me I'd
be just fine and I was. I haven't missed my session since. Since then we've
been able to add 3 more folks from here to the roster. I could fix it but that
ain't gonna happen

  A FLY TYING FANATIC !

Cotton balls, wine corks, tow sacks, I save'em all.
Craft beads, sparkle rope, doll's eyes, I'm walkin tall.

Mosquito net, you bet! And it's already green, don't
have to dye it. Just try it. You'll see what I mean.

Sewing thread, parrot feathers, and purple yarn.
I'll use most anything, and don't really give a darn.

Closed cell foam and balsa wood. Anything goes.
Why I've even used the lint from between my toes.

Candle wax, bee's wax, ear wax, I use'em all.
Soda straws, model paint bought at the Mall.

Javalina hair belly hair from an Armadillo.
Why I even use eider down from my pillow.

Longhorn tail hair, my hair and hair from my
cats. I'll even use belly hair from a free-tailed bat.

Black Visqueen sure makes good beetle backs.
Cut'em out, glue'em on, hang'em on the rack.

Thus is the life of a fly-tying fanatic. Could I use
the fiberglass insulation from my attic?

I throw away nuthin. I keep all kinds of stuff.
With my kind of fly-tying, there's never enough!

Just wanted to give you an update on my pneumonia. Everything seems to be
back to normal. Cut the grass Tuesday. Cut down
a dead Red Tipped Photenia yesterday and cut it into fireplace lengths. Went
to the ranch Thursday and put out 3 bales of hay and unloaded two 50 pound bags
of cattle cubes/sweetfeed. Repaired broken board on fence. All this without
breaking a sweat and when I finished each chore I didn't feel tired. No fever
for a week, so, I guess the newmony is gone. Now, if I can just keep from
catching the Swine flu. It's on the rise in the McLennan County. Gone from 1
case three weeks ago to a little over 1,400 this Wed.

Below is what I found on Web Md about best ways to protect yourself. You
might want to read it.

Wearing face masks is questionabloe, but the CDC does recommend that sick
people wear a face mask to avoid spreading their illness if they must be in
close contact with other people. However, don't rely on a face mask as your
only protection -- you still need to take other swine flu prevention steps:

a.. Wash your hands often.
b.. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
c.. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
d.. If you've got flu-like symptoms, avoid others until you've been free of
fever for 24 hours.
e.. Stay at least 6 feet away from people with flu-like illness.
If you do wear a face mask, don't reuse it. Face masks should be worn once
and then thrown out.

  Have a Goodun !

  Thanks Tony.

Appreciate your concern. here's hoping you can get on the water
soon. Wading is pretty well over for me, what with my weak and arthritic
ankles. Have a hard time keeping from falling, even using my wading staff.
Looks like I might start using my bass boat to fly fish for panfish. At least
I can stand on the deck, lean on the pedestal, and manuever around using the
trolling motor. But, as much as I enjoy panfishing, there ain't nothing like
catching a big trout while standing in the stream.

  Yep, we will survive!

surgery a week later and I know what you are going through. Recovery has been
real slow and I still have a long way to go. Have missed out on two years of
fishing and have done very little trying.
Hang in there we will survive.
  Tony

Letting you all know first. Looking for tyers for this one as it will be
my last for about six months as I start treatment in June.

Anyway we have until 15 Jun to sign up and 30 Aug to complete the flys.

Let's look at some more streamers (warmwater or coldwater)
(trout, gills, steelhead - your decision).

Self-addressed stamped envelops (MANDATORY), toe tags etc (all the normal
rules or guideline) Again for our friends not in the US, send 3-6 extra flys
and I will pay the postage back BUT you still need a self-addressed envelope.

Also will need your email address so I can make a group list of all the
tyers. This will make it easier to keep everyone up to date.

I am off in the AM for a week of trolling for some trophy trout with my
Chili Troll Fly. I will return next Thursday.

Some of the lurkers and newly signed up - get your vises dusted off and get
to tying.

Deserttrout is out.

May your GOD be your fishing partner.

 Hi All,

I thought I'd give a little fishing report with some photos and run a fly
swap idea by people to see if there is any interest. Tha salmon are
starting to come into the local rivers so the sea run cutts tend to follow
and chow on eggs. Last sunday I was able to hook (and release) a nice
dolly varden as well as a couple of cutts and coastal rainbow. Yesterday
my brother and I went out to get some sea run cutts and did pretty well...
these guys are always on the move so you've got to find em' sometimes you
can get several out of one hole. These are not huge fish but are really
pretty fish you gotta love em. You can see photos here:

 http://www.nwtroutchaser.com/adventure.htm

Any interest in a small sea run cutthroat fly swap? Maybe 10 or 12 at
 most.

 Tight lines,
 Bill
