Fred and his brother Bruce (who just lost his wife to cancer less than three months ago) owned a garage and I was their main mechanic (that was when plugs, points, condenser and rotor and you were “on the road again” most times. Anyway, Billie and I started going over there and seeing Fred and his wife since I found out who it was, and anyway, all my son’s grand parents on mine and my wife’s side died before he was just a few yrs old, so “Nana” (and Fred) have been like grand parents to him and when she died this week (from Parkinson’s complications” it has been devastating for him and his fiancé’ as well as Fred. Her funeral will be this Saturday at 2pm. Took so long as “Nana” has a grandson in the military stationed in Hawaii and Friday is the soonest he can make it home. Hawaii is getting a whale of a hurricane and he said they were moving GI’s to different bases in California etc till the storm passes, so he’d be kinda headed this way even if his grand mother had not passed away. To top it all off, Fred and Bruce’s oldest brother’s wife just died less than a yr ago, as did their only Sister. It’s been a rough family for the Dempsey family this yr so even though ya’ll don’t know them, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. One last thing. Ashley is working at the local nursing home as a Nurse (The lady who died was also a nurse for 30 yrs, so that’s why Ashley wanted to become a nurse) on a 4pm till midnight shift, and they had called the hospice ppl in on Tuesday after Ashley had gone to work and they said they didn’t think she’d make it through the night and to “call in the family”. Well Ashley hasn’t been working there long and is still on probation, so her supervisor (old bitty) told her she HAD to finish out her shift. Ashley worked her shift, then flew home real fast. Her Nana had stopped breathing just 30 SECONDS before Ashley got home. Basically, she had died. Ashley went in to see her, and her Nana opened her eyes for about 10-20 seconds, smiled, then passed away for good after that. Now how do you account for that other than God allowing Ashley to say good bye to her beloved Grand mother, who raised her. The nursing home didn’t even want Ashley to miss any work on Saturday, which is the day of the fumeral, but she told them to “kiss her hiney”, and I told her “good for you, and if that’s how they treat their workers you need to go to work at the hospital which is ajacent to the nursing home here. She said that’s just what’s she’s going to check about. She has to jump through a lot of hoops as she is in a local college to become and LPN (and hopefully an RN), and that job is part of her “OJT” agreement with the school and the nursing home. The ONLY trick to it is remembering to stop the end of the bobbin before you cut the thread off the fly. Otherwise you'll spend all day re-threading the bobbin. I picked up some rite bobbins recently and really don't care for them. They're going in the club auction next spring. But an alternate treatment was planned, though he had to be both stronger and more stabile than he was for the moment. So he hadn't been placed at that hospice for the same reason as the other patients there, to get as much life quality in their last days. It was just better for him to be there for now. I had been there for 5 days and my sister for 2 and we sat alone with him. The fever rised and everything got worse. The situation reached the level where the nurses got other faces, offered us a book with the title At The End to prepare us... and finally also offered us a priest to help us with support. And when people with extensive experience of dying patients are doing things like that... you more or less know what to expect and we called his fiancé and my other sister. So for a couple of hours we all then sat there looking at his breathing and wondering if there would come another breath after that... when he suddenly stopped moaning and started to breath normally again and finally fell asleep. The man surprised everyone, including staff... and when we came back the next day we couldn't believe our eyes when we entered the room and saw him in sitting in his chair laughing at the TV. I had to go back home to Sweden the 23:th. Christmas Eve at home is the price of having children. But daily reports from my family has said that after this horrible night he has slowly but steadily gotten better and better... one foot in front of the other... and optimism has found its way into us again. Maybe he would get a chance to get that treatment after all. Isolating his cancer to his bones could give him a considerable amount of time. But this morning I talked to my sister. Yesterday her husband (also a doctor) had spoken to my father's doctor, who said something none of us had expected after seen him climbing like this. We should hope for weeks rather than months. My sister didn't catch the reason why but obviously something still is very wrong, despite the looks of it. This got a little bit longer than planned. Making long stories short has never been my field. It was dead calm and the river was as smooth as glass.This is not normal when they are releasing water from the dam. I watched a while and then could not stand it any longer, I had to give it a try. I keep a rod ready under the porch but I had a Froggie tied on the leader so I had to change to a trout fly. This took me at least ten minuets as my eyesight is not what it used to be. I tied on a sz 16 Green Mylar body Soft Hackle that was a killer the last time I was on the river. Got down to the dock and made a few casts, no takes. Then two boats came past my dock right through the feeding lane. This put the trout down. Waited a bit and the rises started again. Made a few more casts and still no takes. Switched over to a Brown Soft Hackle, another ten minuets lost. There was a steady riser and I cast a bit above and upstream from it. That was a take. A nice 14+ Rainbow. Cast to a few more rises that yielded another two more Rainbows in the 14 class. In a sloppy cast I hit the dock rail that broke off my fly. It was the only one I had like it. I tied on another soft hackle with a Peacock Herl body. No takes and then tried another with still no takes. These two were sz 14 flies. I guess they wanted the smaller flies. By this time my legs and back had given out so I decided to call it quits. I had been on the dock almost an hour. As I was leaving I heard a big splash. Waited a bit and watched the area where I heard the splash. Sure enough It came up again clean out of the water. This trout had to be at least a three pound fish. What a thrill to see a Trout that big come full body out of the water. It cleared the water by several inches. I did not know what it was taking ,I could not see any bugs on the surface. I can truly emphathize with you, because our youngest daughter Amanda is back in the hospital for the third time because of continuing pain after having her gall bladder removed early last week. Her surgeon told her this morning that she is trying to make up all by herself the list of complications patients may have following this procedure. Waiting for tests results to verify whether she has pancreatitis. They are also doing an ultrasound to check the vessels to the liver and the pancreas. And they are keeping her here for two or three days on IV's and liquids until they are sure she can eat without incurring severe pain. One benefit of working here is she is only four floors up and down a couple of corridors. I will visit her shortly to see what the latest news is. Prayers are desired and always appreciated. Anyway, she got up this morning, and was real short of breath. Then, when she started moving around, she just collapsed as the fluid had built back up in her lungs. She was only 51 years old I believe. She also had six children and 4 grand children, She also leaves behind her husband Jeff, who I understand has been by her side throughout all this, so i know he must be hurting extremely bad right now as well for sure. Please keep the whole family in your thoughts and prayers as I'm sure they'll need them in the days, weeks, and months to come. Allan has been a great friend and confidant to me for many years now and I consider him one of my closest friends, and my heart aches for him at this time as I can't imagine what he must be going through. I have never heard anybody say an unkind word about him or his wife Martha either and she also needs your thoughts and prayers as well as parents are not supposed to outlive their children, but the family is a Christian family and understand that whatever the reason for that, God had a plan for it all., and for them all. But it will still be hard on them, as it is for anybody who loses a loved one. I didn't know Penny , but from what all I have heard she was a great wife, mother and daughter, as well as just a great all around person and the world suffered a loss when it lost her today.
