I’m in. I still have a bunch of pinky panfish bugs from a swap a couple years

I’ll post that one too.

Hi Peggy,

Sorry to hear about your BIL. Condolences to you and your family. Amazing when
you think you're doing the right thing and it goes wrong.

Good to have you on board for the "swap" though. I see you are still doing
youre demos and courses. Great work.

Gary I look forward to seeing this secret panfish fly. I would love to have a
go at the crappy and sunfish. They seem pretty consistent fly rod sport.

I will put my fly up on here as soon as its done.

So far there is :
Peggy,

Gary,

Rene?
Me.

Plenty of room for all you other old farts out there. ONE fly and post a pic on
here with the recipe. No postage to worry about, no dozens of flies to tie.
I'll start another thread.

And anyone up for an old farts swap MkII? Say ten participants and tie just ONE
fly then put the picture of the fly and recipe on here No postage no
sorting and no pressure and no loads of flies to tie. You could do it between

dropped off the page a little bit. I see Nick occassionally post on Facebook
and his sense of humour is still way out there in left field :-)

I will have a look for the recipe for the Pink Squirrel. I know some water it
will work on for sure. And with all this 10 foot 2weight fishing its prime ammo
for that method I'd say.

As for Air Head? Well we all get to be a bit air headish when we are young then
again when we are old. So nothing wrong with being an Air Head :-)

Keith, I missed the Beer swap. But I was in the Drinks swap where I tied a

swap hosted by Don O is the last swap I've been a part of. I saw your name on
the list of participants. I I fish with a Pink Squirrel quite a lot if there
are no rises.

And when I do, I sometimes think of Don Ordes. A few days ago I could not
find my Rope Dubbing DVD. I was about to tear the house apart. It took me three
days to find. Nick Runnarsson hosted an Old Farts swap a few years back. I
tied a Gary La Fontaine fly: The Air Head. That is the fly's true name and no
one should infer anything from that about this tier.

I haven’t been very active for a while, whether it’s posting to the group,
tying or even fishing. Looked @ my tying station the other day, thinking about
tying some bass streamers. Only got out on the water a couple times last year,
hopefully that will change. I’d be up for a virtual swap.

How many of us are on the facebook vfb page? I was thinking we could swap but
instead of mailing a box of flies just post a picture on the facebook, no
postage. They think a lot of themselves and are just to much now. It would
give us all some ideas from each other but not the consistency of tying a dozen
or more of the same fly.

For those who are not on FB, Tony died in his sleep last night. I visited them
at the home in early March as I was in Mountain Home for a ladies fly tying
event. He was determined to make 90 but didn't seem to have a plan other than
getting home after that. Going home was not an option without live in care, but
the home was very nice and everyone knew both of them as the employees lived
local as well.

Maybe next year for Sowbug we should all meet there for a moment of silence in
his honor and before we all get to 90.

For those of you that don't know (I think that is most of you), Tony had to
have his other leg removed. They did it yesterday, and the last that I
heard from his son Bob, he was asleep in his room. His daughter and son in
law were there. This was a 50/50 operation and he survived again. There is
also a 50/50 chance of life threatening complications in the first 30 days.
They will only let 1 family member in at a time, so of course this is all
second hand for me. Just reporting what I have been told. I am currently on
the Conejos, and communication is slow. Will report further when I
have more information.

Re: [VFB] Sage Fly Rods

2013-02-14 Thread jbalmer
I had the same great customer service w/ St Croix. When my 2 piece 5WT
cracked landing a 11 lb catfish, I asked them that if they were going to
replace it I'd prefer a 4 piece. They called me when they got the rod
said not only would they replace it w/ a four piece, but they'd upgrade
the rod for less than half the difference in price. I try to stop in there
every time I'm in Park Falls.

 Chuck,

Several things to consider here. One is that part of the cost is the
 labor,
another is RD, materials, warranty, and total cost of operations.
Obviously if one is made offshore it is likely being made for pennies on
the dollar. If the employee in China is being paid $0.70 an hour to make
 an
iPhone 5, then consider that shaping cork handles or wrapping guides
probably pays $0.05 an hour. Some companies have lower end models made
overseas and save the better stuff to be made in the US, Canada, or in
Hardy's case the UK. Usually quality control isn't an issue in these
 cases,
but you are getting something that the materials cost less as well. Maybe
carbon fiber that was cutting edge 20 years ago that is now cheap to
produce, vs thinner and stronger carbon fiber that was just developed
within the last couple of years. Does it make a difference? Cast them and
judge for yourself. Even blindfold yourself and do a blind casting
 comparison to remove any bias.

Since this great recession I have saved my dollars to buy American.
 Nothing
racist, but rather I believe that we are destroying ourselves and
 weakening
our dollar every time we purchase something overseas. If I were Chinese, I
would patriotically buy Chinese made goods, or if I were German, I would
buy German made goods. You can't really do this 100%, but when I can, I
make it a point to buy American. We were the greatest manufacturer in the
world from about the 1880s to the 1980s. Our money is leaving this country
for imports faster than we can bring money in from our own exports. If we
don't reverse that trend soon... American manufacturers like Sage and Abel
have made a point to not offshore, not cut corners for the sake of chasing
the bottom of the market. I recently replaced my aged and leaking Cabelas
waders for a pair Sims G4s for this very reason. And I can tell you
 without
a doubt that pinching my pennies for it was worth it to me. They are
without doubt the best made pair of waders I have ever used, seen,
 touched,
 etc.

All else considered, Sage stands by their products. Most companies do, but
in Sage's case I can speak from experience of a close friend of mine whose
rod broke (from a likely hook ding) and not only did they replace it
without question, but when the replacement was lost in the mail they
expedited another replacement to him. They shipped it overnight in fact.
You pay for that kind of service. A lot of offshore budget line products
come with a very limited warranty. That warranty factors into the total
cost of the product and the manufacturer has to leave enough profit in
there to stand by their product. Not that every single rod is going to
 need
replacing, but they do need to factor that into the cost.

Now if you really want something (anything really) high quality, even
luxury goods, and it is out of your price range then you might want to try
the second hand market. You may not get the latest and greatest, but you
are still buying a piece of that dream. And I know you are frugal, so this
is a more practical approach for the budget conscious.

 Regards,

 Scott

Re: [VFB] Sage Fly Rods

2013-02-10 Thread jbalmer
Most of my fly rods are St Croix Legend Elite, but I've fished w/ Sages
other rods. While I don't own a Sage now, I will @ some point. As w/ any
high end product, there is a name component to the pricing, but it is also
true that w/ a lot of fly fishing equipment you get what you pay for.
There are a number of more than adequate fly rods in the $100 - $200
range. but there is a noticable difference when you move up to the $300 -
$600 models. I like St Croix because they cast feel as nice as some rods
twice their price, their customer service is outstanding I spend a fair
amount of time in Park Falls WI. That being said, there is a similar bump
up to more expensive rods. As my casting prowess disposible income
improve, I will own Sage one or two other manufacturers, but for now, St
Croix does quite well for me.

J

Well, it is a lot like cars. You can still get there in an old Toyota
 like
I have but a nice new sports car is better and feels totally different. I
have a couple of Sages and Winstons. I also have one I made, a few
 others.
I have caught fish on all of them. But they do perform differently.

it up stream on my 7wt. Most of the trout we caught were smaller browns.

I don't normally give a fishing report after a 'mundane' outing, but last
night was different. I was left with a question and a challenge rather
than a photo of a nice fish. We drove out to the lake for our anniversary
dinner at the marina, and had time to wet a line before heading back.

So we went to my favorite spot at the mouth of the canyon. I usually fish
a big bunny-fly or crawfish pattern, but I thought I'd give one of my
 australian possum rope-worms a try. It's about 4 long on a size 8 wet
hook, and the whole body is an extended furled rope-dub of chopped/dubbed
possum with 3/4 inch at the tail being fl. orange. It had a large red
metal bead-head and a small collar of wet hackles. It was roped on 2#
mono so it was pretty limber, and oh yeah, it had a tiny 00 gold colorado
blade at the tail end (no split-ring on this one- just locked into the
loop at the end of the furl), and no hook at the end, just the main hook
at the front. It looked real tasty as I retrieved it in the fairly-clear
 water.

I usually just catch one trout in the 4 to 6lb. range, and then no more.
It's a steep drop-off, and I lose a lot of flies in the rocks as I try to
bounce the fly off the bottom coming uphill on the retreive, especially
with a wet sinking line. Last night I fished the heavy-headed fly on a
dry line and let it sink slow just over the edge.

The technique worked as just beyong the drop-off, only 15' out or so, but
deep, I got a take. It felt like it normally does, just a snag-up, but
then with a definite pull-pack. Then I felt the weight. I was fishing a
5-wt., so I had a good feel of the fish, but it wasn't fighting like the
big trout I caught so many times before here. It didn't panic at all or
take off, but it had the strength and weight to do just that. It just
slowly swam off, taking the slack and most of the fly-line out, and it
stayed real deep. It felt more like a big catfish or even a stingray
rather than a trout, but this lake has neither of those. There's trout
and wall-eye and the rare burbot and some carp.

I had Cheryl come grab the net off my vest and get ready to land it, but
that wasn't going to happen any time soon. I had it on for about 3 or 4
minutes as it very slowly worked it's way out to deeper water. I had no
control as it just slowly took line off a tight drag. If I tried to palm
the reel, the tip would just drop. I had the definite feeling if this
fish did a panic run, it would spool me.

Then it ended, just as the backing started to show. Line went slack and
no fish on it. I could feel the fly as I reeled it in, so the hook must
have just slipped out. It came back with green moss on it, so the fish
was on the bottom when the hook pulled.

So why write about a lost fish? Because I have no idea what I had, and
I've caught countless trout at this location, both in a boat and from the
shore. It drops off straight down to 130' deep, the original river
canyon, so anything could be cruising the cliff looking for crawfish in
 the rocks.

Was it a walleye? Didn't strike like one or fight like one. Was it a
rainbow, like 95% of the fish I take there? Maybe, but it didn't fight
anything like a rainbow and it never panicked. Was it a big brown? Most
likely, as they will stay deep and bury their nose in the bottom. But it
never struggled like a trout does. It just very slowly made its way out
to deep water, like a big catfish would, and very much like a stingray
would (I have caught them on flies).

So now I have a quest, to find out what that was. It's 40 miles to that
spot, so it's not a cheap drive with a pick-up truck and high gas prices.
But I need to find out what that was. If it was a big trout, I don't even
want to guess what it weighed, as I've never had anything that heavy on
the line in fresh water, including the pike I've caught. I did catch a
20lb. carp that was close, and this lake has some big carp, so maybe?

I lost the fly in the rocks on a subsequent cast, and never had another
take, which is the usual for this spot, which tells me it was the
territorial trout for that piece of shoreline.

I have a dozen more of those worms, so I'm on a mission now to find out
what that was. I'm planning to take the canoe next time so I can fight
him from the deep side rather than the shore, and I can work more than the
 one spot of shoreline.

So, in this case, losing the fish makes it more intriguing than catching
the fish. Game and Fish says there are some giant trout on the bottom in
the center of the lake, in the 30lb Kamloops class,

Happy Memorial Day, to all you vets, thanks.
Can't decide whether I want to plant in the rain or rebuild my
basement after the new HVAC, so I think I'll transfer everything in my
vest to my new chestpack.

[VFB] nevermind

2009-04-24 Thread jbalmer

It appears that there was a problem w/ my e-mail address. I didn't
realize I had an account w/ my business address too that's the one
that was banned. Don't know why but oh well.
As to the pond, my 5wt isn't the best rod for casting into a 20 knot
wind. Crosswind, I was almost God-like, but there were a few sine
waves going into it. The crappies the bass seemed to want it that
way, so I got to work on part of the qualification test.
