[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Fish are, of course, indispensable to the angler. They give him an excuse for fishing and justify the fly rod without which he would be a mere vagrant. But the average fisherman's average catch doesn't even begin to justify, as fish, its cost in work, time, and money. The true worth of fishing, as the experienced, sophisticated angler comes to realize, lies in the memorable contacts with people and other living creatures, scenes and places, and living waters great and small which it provides. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Ordinarily the man accustomed to a 9-foot fly rod would reduce to one about 7 feet long and feel that he was equipped for working a small brook. This, I beg to point out, is only the palest concession to that kind of angling. If we chop 4 feet off that, however, the remaining 3 foot length will permit casting from almost any position. I use mine right- or left-handed, with the tip pointing almost at the water. Because of the length and essentially greater line speed, the rod throws tight loops, which permits casting under obstacles with relative ease. There is no tendency to hook casts off the target, as you certainly must when casting with a longer rod in a purely horizontal plane. Fishing with McClane by A. J. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
The farther you travel to fish, the worse the fishing will be. However, it will improve immediately after you leave to return home, thus the old saying: The fishing is always better the day before you get there and the day after you leave. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY - FLY TYING FANATIC
This is one of my more popular poems. It can also be used as a quote. If you'd like me to post more of my fly fishing poems, let me know. All are 10 guaranteed to make you laugh. Have a Goodun. JIMMYD A FLY TYING FANATIC ! Cotton balls, wine corks, tow sacks, I save'em all. Craft beads, sparkle rope, doll's eyes, I'm walkin tall. Mosquito net, you bet! And it's already green, don't have to dye it. Just try it. You'll see what I mean. Sewing thread, parrot feathers, and purple yarn. I'll use most anything, and don't really give a darn. Closed cell foam and balsa wood. Anything goes. Why I've even used the lint from between my toes. Candle wax, bee's wax, ear wax, I use'em all. Soda straws, model paint bought at the Mall. Javalina hair belly hair from an Armadillo. Why I even use eider down from my pillow. Longhorn tail hair, my hair and hair from my cats. I'll even use belly hair from a free-tailed bat. Black Visqueen sure makes good beetle backs. Cut'em out, glue'em on, hang'em on the rack. Thus is the life of a fly-tying fanatic. Could I use the fiberglass insulation from my attic? I throw away nuthin. I keep all kinds of stuff. With my kind of fly tying, there's never enough! By JIMMY D. MOORE August 23, 2005 © º * JIMMY D. It is well known that no person who regards his reputation will ever kill a trout with anything but a fly. It requires some training on the part of the trout to take to this method. . . . [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY XTRA
From time to time, when I miss a day or two, I'll throw in some extra quotes. Hope you don't mind. Fishing books, lit by emotion recollected in tranquility, are like poetry. We do not think of them as books but as people. They are our companions and not only riverside. Summer and winter they are with us and what a pleasant company they are. Arthur Ransome The Fisherman's Library [1959] Twice I had the feeling, which I have talked about to other anglers and they have had it too, of a sudden anticipation of catching a fish so strong that it amounts to certainty. I suppose it is partly the harmony of effective presentation when everything else is auspicious, so that a take seems in that moment to be the only feasible conclusion. But it's not quit as simple as that, it's ore like a shaft of intuition. In must, logically, be an illusion; possible, to, you tend to remember it when it works and forget it when it doesn't. But, for all that, it's a curious experience. J R Hartley Casts Again º * JIMMY D.
[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
My wife said I have so many fly rods and reels that I cannot possibly use them all. My reply was that I had rods and reels to fish, rods and reels to tinker with and then my fine crafted rods and reels to fondle and admire, while dreaming of trout fishing during the cold winter months. You can imagine what kind of look she gave me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Choose your fly fishing friends wisely. They can have an effect on how many and the size of the trout you catch. Fly fishers who spend a lot of time fishing together will unconciously adopt some of the other's mannerisms, choice of flies and casting techniques over time. Surrounding yourself with great fly fishers who catch a lot of trout will help you catch more and larger trout. However, does that mean that while you as the poorer angler improve your fishing prowess, the better angler's fishing prowess deterioates? It could be that as your fishing improves and your friend's deteriorates, he reaches a point where his fishing begins to improve by watching you the better angler. If that is the case, somewhere along the line, both will become great anglers. On the other hand, if both of you are piss poor anglers to begin with . . . . -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Hi Jimmy, at least you didn't brake your leg or even more valuable parts. I think we both are now close to 10 years on the list, and during this time frame you had a couple of accidents. Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
This is where the problems start. Who developed the coachman? Are you sure? When did it become a royal coachman, a leadwing coachman, a fanwing coachman, a then a (whoops) Royal Wulff? If the original tier wrapped a body in peacock, is every peacock fly a copy or variation of that fly? If I sub. peacock ice dub for peacock, is that still only a peacock variation? What if I use black ice dub. Is that just a variation now, or is it a black gnat? Color changed it? Why not the synthetic as a changer? What about a Royal Wulff with poly wings? Is that still a Royal Wulff, since Lee only made a change from white feather fanwings to white calf-tail to call it a Royal Wulff? Can I call my Winger Adams a 'Don's Adams' like Lee Wulff changed the Royal Fanwing Coachman by just changing the wing material? (Maybe there was a tier named Royal Fanwing. No Buggs, there wasn't. And nooo, we can't call a green Adams a Don's Adams-apple!) Good example writing of two of my own: With this variation I feel that I've been innovative and created something new, even though it's in fact nothing more than taking an old fly and applying other materials in other ways. I tied it being inspired by the old one, but it's a fly I as well could have made without having the old one in mind. Making a flat, tapered and segmented body to imitate the insect would seem more natural to me, than making it look like a dull sausage. But... basic blueprints for the prototype (and I'm not ashamed to call it that) were on the table... and even though chenille has turned into Antron and Krystal Flash / Ice Dub... and plain wrapping has turned into weaving on underbody, its name is Montana + the describing Slim Sparkly: http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/mss_1.jpg http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/mss_2.jpg http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/mss_3.jpg I feel the same way with this sister variation of its sister fly... and since this prototype, with the tails/antennaes and bi-color dorsal/ventral, is more imitative than its sister fly, it's probably also more likely the one I would have tied without having another fly in mind. However, if I actually was aiming for being imitative, enough to bother with bi-color weaving, a bi-color chenille sausage would have been my last choice. But, again, basic blueprints are on the table so it's Bitch Creek... with the describing Slim Sparkly: http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/ http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/bcss_1.jpg bcss_1.jpg http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/ http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/bcss_2.jpg bcss_2.jpg http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/ http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/bcss_3.jpg bcss_3.jpg But since this one actually is woven from the start, it's ALL about changing the materials. So technically, to take it a step further and change its white rubber legs into white biots, to make it even more imitative wouldn't make a difference. It's still just another change of materials. It would turn it even more into a different fly ('even more' as I think mine already is)... but built upon the same blueprints. And if I took a couple of antron strands and made a wingcase out of them, to make it even more imitative... would it be a completely different fly or a Bitch n' Montana Mutation, Slim Sparkly version? The original sausages were in my head from the start and I aimed to improve, so these are just 'my versions'. But if I had done them before I knew of the originals, had them on my web page for a couple of years and then suddenly seen a friend using the sausages, I wouldn't automatically think he had made 'chenille versions' of my own. The appearances of these two, the shapes, their sharp contours and the light reflecting glare (which I wish the camera could capture better) make them differ a lot from the originals. How many would think 'Montana' if my thorax was black? But 'improving an original' or 'creating from scratch' doesn't matter to me. The Slim Sparkly generation has been a development in its own and both of them are version three. Already existing blueprints don't stop me from feeling innovative after my work with these. Several friends have also asked for a step-by-step on the Sparkly Bitch, so I made one yesterday (http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/bc_slimsparkly_steps.htm). ... and today I'm packing my fourth Bitch Creek version for Don's Rope Swap. ;o) /Nick - innovative copy-cat -Ursprungligt meddelande- Från: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-m...@googlegroups.com] För Don Ordes Skickat: den 26 juni 2010 20:50 Till: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Ämne: Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY My two cents: His comment doesn't make any sense. 1. He says during the time period (past two decades) we have a proliferation in new tying materials This comment refers to materials 2. But then he says Truth to be told there seems to be little that is truly new in the fly tying world.Whereas this comment refers to fly design or patterns. Didn't sound that way to me. But it's still not true anyway. See below for an example of tying a czech nymph by Davie McPhail. He virtually does your rope dub technique but his attachment of the dubbing to the hook is different to yours in that he does not anchor it first before turning the dubbing araound the thread with his fingersBut he does hold the bobbin and twist the dubbing around the thread in the same manner as DO. Davie does not use my technique. He uses only one hand to twist the anchored dubbing- I use two. He can get away with that on this dubbing, but hare's ear and squirrel will not work- ask Nick. In my technique, you never release the dubbing. That way all materials bind to themselves and the rope never has to be re-tightened as you wrap. Using two hands would allow him to segment and taper the fly in one movement- about 20 seconds, and his 1st dubbing method was from 4:00 to 5:20. Rope-dubbing my way would allow him to dub both color dubbings in one step in 30 seconds rather than taking him to 6:00- = 2 minutes. He would also get great segmentation to boot. Also, like you said, he has to release the dubbing to make an anchor, and fly-away dubbings will fall off the thread before he can make his anchor. My technique is anchor 1st and two hands. Anything else is not my technique. I don't know when Davie started his technique, but I have seen others doing things more similar to the rope-dub ever since the VFB article and the earliest shows around 2000. Also, I am not the only one rope-dubbing these days (the right way), or else no one has learned anything in 10 years of free show demonstrations and the VFB article. I tied at shows for many years and have read many books and talked to many masters. Polly and others also had vaguely similar noodleing techniques, but they are not the same as mine. Polly twisted the thread with his dubbing- opposite of mine. Maybe some day someone will show and prove to me that the rope-dub technique has been used by others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC2aO5X0IJA I checked for 8 years and no one could produce anything. I guess that I should qualify this statement with time, that before I started demonstrating it in 2000, no one had seen it. Davie's technique is not mine, and ice dub would give him trouble every time he let go of it. Even if someone is using the rope-dub technique, it would have to pre-date me demonstrating it publically. I have a few friends publicly demonstrating my method accurately to represent the DVD methods. I am advertising my DVD on FAOL, and a Canadian tier accused early on me of plagerizing Polly's technique. Before we could get his post expunged, a lot of people were misled. He was chastized by the owner for false accusatins, but never made an apology to me. Denny Conrad has since done a review of my DVD for FAOL and has adopted the rope dub as his only dubbing method. He has tied for 65 years and has never seen the technique elsewhere. He is thrilled with his results and can tie excellent 3-color fishing flies in less than a minute. So show me something before 2000 and let's start over. I started the technique in the early 80's, but never made it public. So let's just use 2000. And roped yarns don't count. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Sorry about the lack of QFTD's for last few days, but I had the rare opportunity to take my middle son and my two twin grandkids fishing on Lake Waco. My bass boat ain't that little, but with two ten-year olds waving Zebco 202's around with spinnerbaits attached, all I did was sit in the driver's seat and try to keep from getting hooked somewhere on my head. LOL The twins, Heckle and Jeckle, I call them, never shut up. Joe, their Dad is a very serious fisherman, and boy did the twins try his patience. Upshot of the two day fishing spree was zero fish, one spinnerbait hooked in Joes's Nike shoes, numerous 'tree bass', and lost lures, due to getting hung up on underwater structure. I did finally fish a little with a Buzzbait but did it sitting down. We spent most of our time working our way through the 'jungle' of dead trees, looking for black bass. Saw quite a bit of movement, but with the constant talking and laughing from Heckle Jeckle, the fish were definitely spooked. Now for the Quote. Take your grandkids fishing. Even if you don't catch any fish, you'll have the pleasure of their company and hopefully, be able to teach them about black bass.
J. McLane º * JIMMY D.
