Sorry to notice this so late. I've had a rather serious hangover from
the media extravaganze birthday bash.

The basic tips on lighting and other goodies are over at
http://wearethemedia.com/?p=11

I'm going out for beers with a friend of mine who's a dp (director of
photography) later this week. He's taught me everything I know, even
though it has been mostly wasted in my vlogs since I don't get too
light techy. I can interview him and if anyone has any questions
about lighting they would like me to ask, email them to me or drop me
a line at 206-388-9879 and if I get any response, I'll ask him. He's
a pro so this might be a good way for someone to get some lighting
answers.

-starting with basic videotaping/lighting/sound tips (I saw this out
there already somewhere, and it was great but I can't remember where.
Bre, was it you, I think?)

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Message for the Troops DVD

2005-07-19 Thread Deirdre Straughan

FWIW, I originally saw your post and was interested but (a) have been
hellishly busy lately and (b) don't know what to say. I support the
troops in that they are human beings in a hellish situation mostly
not of their choosing and I wish they didn't have to be there. My
thoughts and feelings on the whole mess are more complex than I can or
should explore in a video to the troops, and probably wouldn't do much
good for morale!

I've had the same problem when I've met (on various plane trips)
troops heading back. My feelings about what they're heading into are
very strong but, again, not easily reduced to a 2-second pat on the
back. If you've seen my video interview with my dad about Vietnam,
you'll have some idea why this hits me hard.

Hi all, just joined the list after seeing this post and figured I'd
jump in with a few comments. (For context - I'm with FeedBurner, I
work with publishers who run their feeds through us.)

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, andrew michael baron wrote:

No, I am nearly certain your problem is Feedburner. We have 1000s of
subscribers and I have spent about two weeks closely watching and
coming to understand how iTunes works.

We're always looking for more input, this has most definitely been a
bit of a moving target the last few weeks. I've been talking with the
podcasting team at Apple since just ahead of launch, and we're working
with their engineers to ensure that our iTunes support is as effective
 as possible.

When iTunes launched, most of the videobloggers were out in the cold
 for one reason: Feedburner.

This seems a bit off the mark; since we republish your source feed,
you're of course always welcome to add anything to your source feed
that you like - we certainly don't strip anything out. A number of our
more eager users in fact went live with iTunes support within hours of
4.9's launch, and then proceeded to fumble around as it became clear
that the spec, the examples and the actual implementation were all a
 bit different.

So we spent several days to ensure that we could add one-click iTunes
support, something we released less than a week after 4.9 launched.
Now the more than 10,000 vlog and podcast feeds which run through us
have two options - either bake in the extensions directly by hand (or
some other 3rd party plugin), or select the metadata from the
drop-downs in the smartcast service menu at FeedBurner.

When you depend on a 3rd party, you are at their mercy for your
feed. I said this a long time ago but now we can see the direct
 effects.

We now have more than 50,000 publishers running nearly 80,000 feeds
through us, and we take their dependence on us very seriously. We
provide a free service for most (some users pay for enhanced stats),
but it's an important and valued service to our users, and we strive
to make the service as reliable and robust as possible... we'd have
loved to throw iTunes support out there on day 1, but the flip-side of
having so many people rely on you is that you have an obligation to
get it right and eliminate as many rough edges as possible, so it's
simple and reliable for the vast majority of the user base.

Also, Feedburner sucks for not having any control over updating your
 feed.

We've actually had built-in support for XMLRPC pings since day one,
 details are here:

 http://www.burningdoor.com/feedburner/archives/000478.html

Once you've pinged us, the very next time someone requests your feed,
we'll retrieve the most current version of the feed from your source URL.

Hey sorry Feedburner guys, I think you are doing great things and
people obviously need you. But this just sucks and makes the whole
 thing not worth it.

Hopefully I've been able to shed some light on how we operate and
correct a few misconceptions. Couple thoughts if any of you have
specific issues that come up - if you're a FeedBurner user having
issues with your feed, you should send e-mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] That goes to our extended support team and
generally gets you a reply within a few minutes. If you want to engage
our user community, you can also post to our Forums -
http://forums.feedburner.com/. We also try to answer those pretty
quickly, you'll often see replies from other users as well.

Finally, my contact info is below. While I'll try to keep an eye on
things on this list and chime in if I can help (no self-promotion, I
promise!), you're more than welcome to ping me directly. I've been a
fan of vlogging since meeting Raymond Kristiansen a while back (I
was at Socialtext then, and was working with him on the wiki for his
day job), and am fascinated with where things are heading. It's
exciting to be at a company that's helping the medium evolve... and of
course, if we can make FeedBurner more responsive to the needs of
vloggers, just let me know how.

OK, this was far longer than I'd meant it to be. Thanks for listening,
 keep up the great work.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Mac Switch Question!

2005-07-19 Thread Christopher Ivanyi

I thought I weigh in too, Ryan, I personally use the compression
setting suggested by http://freevlog.org/#compress -- you can adjust
the frame size, and even frame rate to your needs. I have gone with
12 fps, and it works fine. Before these tutorial guidelines came
along I would compress with the older Video, or Sorenson 3 codecs --
they work fine too. Nice thing is one can experiment with a variety
of settings and compare them side by side.

I've not tried the H.264 codec tho'.

By the way, when you get the video camera hooked up to iMovie -- you
are going to be in heaven!

I love my mac too, but I may have to get a new one soon.

 l

For very good quality and pretty big file sizes use the Compress
movie for CD-ROM. This gets saved as a generic .MOV file.

This is helpful. Like I said, I compress the hell out of my movies for the
web (and my friends with slower connections), going Sorensen 3 at Low,
scaling down to 240x180, 64 bits for audio, etc. I was just looking for
how to get MOV files that were closest to the original MOV files that my
 camera made natively -- 320x240, 30fps, etc. I'll try the CD-ROM setting.
This is probably too big for the web in my case, but good for archiving to
CD (or now, DVD -- yay!).

Question: Should I be using Sorensen 3? Or is MPEG-4 better for
cross-platform availability (though wrapping it in a MOV file kind of kills
that)? Or H.263? So many choices... the blessings and bane of
 videoblogging.

H.264 video's look great if the original video is excellent quality
and you dont mind the time it takes to export (forever on a G3 iMac
  500Mhz!!!).

And if you don't mind people not being able to see them (but they can hear
them just fine!). I'm sure H.264 will rule the world, someday, but I'm not
ready for it. It's too much codec for an amateur like me!

PS. iMovie doesnt do Text very clearly so if you are gonna use text
in a movie you should import as a picture from Photoshop or something
  like that.

That's what I've been doing. QuickTime's text tracks are quite powerful
for meta uses (I.e. captioning), but for just plain looking good, they
leave a lot to be desired. My problem is, I have Photoshop for the PC but
not the Mac. So I might have to start using iMovie's title features until
I figure out Adobe's cross upgrade thing (if it even exists anymore).

 Michael Verdi wrote:
Check out our tutorial on Freevlog. http://freevlog.org/#compress
Select the Compress from iMovie video.

 I did! It advocated H.264 or MPEG-4, going down to 15fps and 600bits. I
was trying to replicate my source MOV file settings, though. And here's
something weird -- I did videos out of iMovie at 15fps and 30fps and found
little different in the final file size... so my vlog entries are now
30fps, but still scaled down to 240x180.

I love my Mac. My wife wants a Mini now. And I think she's going to get
 one.

Yeah those encrypted paypal buttons use a little mini form with
 'hidden' fields.

You probably wont be able to piece it together into one link because
it would become an HTTP_GET instead of a HTTP_POST as the form expects
(and I'm betting paypal checks for that).

What I would do, if I were you, is create a small page on your site
that thanks the viewer for clicking the pay-me button and has that
button to paypal .. then use rel=payment to point to that new page.

We're definitely not doing this, and we're aware of a few cases where
iTunes has discovered a FeedBurner feed. We've been asked (by a
number of directories, actually) to expose our feeds, and we've chosen
not to -- should we enable this down the road, it'll be at the user's

[videoblogging] My First Video Blog from Ghana

2005-07-19 Thread Andy Carvin
Title: My First Video Blog from Ghana

Hi everyone,

I just successfully posted my first video blog entry from the BusyInternet cybercafe here in Accra, Ghana. The bandwidth is wonderful by Ghanaian standards, but slow by US standards, so I've had to experiment with the video compression to find compression rates suitable for uploading and downloading here. I've made two versions of a 40-second montage, showing images from around the cybercafe. The low-bandwidth version is around 600k, the medium-bandwidth version is 1.5 megs.

Low bandwidth:
http://www.andycarvin.com/video/busytest1.mov

Medium bandwidth:
http://www.andycarvin.com/video/busytest2.mov

Hopefully this will allow me to post more clips over the course of the next week, assuming I'm able to get back to BusyInternet a few more times. Either way, I'm glad to see that it's at least possible to do it from here, particularly since I'll be giving a videoblogging workshop on Thursday. :-)

thanks,
ac

Here's a tutorial on how to do that with MovableType. Its probably
pretty similar in TypePad.

It probably does require the advanced template editing, but shouldn't

I asked them about this one time, and they said it would involve using

I think they've recently allowed more coding options on standard

Later this week I'll be visiting a Liberian refugee camp and a rural village; hopefully both
will offer better opportunities for shooting some video. We'll have to wait and see...

Good morning,

Maybe I missed this before, but I am trying to figure out the deal
with iTunes and vlogs. So I have subscribe to a few vlogs in the
iTunes podcast directory, and they seem to just play as audio with no
video, I guess naturally because iTunes doesn't play video. So I guess
the iTunes user just has to see the little camera icon to know it's a
video, then go find it in their Music/itunes/itunesmusic/podcasts/
directory and double click to play it in Quicktime? This makes FireAnt
and mefeedia seem doubly awesome!

I was confused because I thought I saw Steve Garfield playing his vlog
in iTunes. So the next versions of itunes and ipods will play video,
too, eh?

sweet!
By the way, if any Treo650 users don't have it already, the free Core
Pocket Media Player will play mpeg4 vlogs on it. Now all the 650 needs
is a 30 gig SD card, Wi-Fi and MPEG4 video recording and we're good to
go!

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Message for the Troops DVD

2005-07-19 Thread Stephanie Bryant

Chris, perhaps this is the crux of it for many of us; our feelings are
so complicated, it's hard to really express them on video.

Here are some thoughts for those who would like to make a video but
don't know what to say:

1) It's not about YOU or your thoughts/feelings about the war or the
troops or whatever. Focus on your audience. Imagine, if you will, a
bunch of 20-something men and women who are far, far away from home,
and probably so homesick they could cry. Not unlike being at college,
but the keggers aren't nearly as fun. Many of them might not even
think about or care about politics: the military is a job-- a hard
one, perhaps, but it's a job, and maybe no more dangerous than other
kinds of industrial work.

2) Give them more than yourself on video saying hello and a scripted
speech. It's video-- use the medium to your advantage! Do a 4-minute
day in the life video of your town. Or a day at the beach with your
kids. Or an afternoon picnic at the park. Or even just 2 minutes of
this is us making breakfast in the morning (you would be surprised
at how many soldiers would kill for a good danish). The soldiers had
to leave behind their whole families, including their pets-- show them
a dog catching a frisbee! Give them something special in somebody's
life (a birthday party, a graduation, a father's day, a first day of
school). Focus on what you think your audience would want to see:
towns like the ones they grew up in (or even their own hometown),
ordinary Americans doing normal things with their friends and
families. Children who don't show the trauma of being in a war zone.
Parents who walk around the block pushing a stroller. Grandfathers
playing chess in the park.

3) Edit, edit, edit, of course. Distill the video down to its
essentials. Put into your video one single idea, and cut anything that
doesn't fit into it. Include music if you can (screw the rights
issue-- the RIAA might be willing to face the PR nightmare of going
after someone for putting a song onto a video sent to the troops, but
they'll lose it, for sure). Sometimes you get so starved for music
from home, it feels like your ears might go deaf (this may be less
true nowadays with file transfer and mp3s and iTunes and amazon.com).
But also be aware that there are some types of content they may not
have in-country, so avoid the nekkidness. ;)

[videoblogging] Re: itunes censorship?

2005-07-19 Thread Mark Cyr

Thank you Steve,

I should have caught that earlier. Thanks to your observation I
posted the problem in Feedburner's forums and learned much.
Feedburner tests each link at the time of burning the feed, and if
they can not verify the link is good, they default the enclosure to a
mime type of txt/html. This can happen if they time out waiting for
a response from whoever is serving up the media files.
It turns out that my issues were with archive.org who are hosting the
file in question. Not only was the request timing out, but after the
Feedburner folks tried it repeatedly they got additional error codes
indicating that the file was trying to stream instead of download.
Now that I have fixed these issues, I have deleted the original post,
and re-posted with the same content, re-synced the Feedburner feed,
and immediately itunes displayed the post.

It was that simple.

If I then look at the raw XML source of the feed, it is entirely

Regarding itunes censorship, I doubt they have much resources to do

No, this is incorrect.
Feedburner only makes enclosures for links that return a non image or

So, it does not make text/html or text/plain or image/jpeg enclosures, etc.
It will make enclosures for everything else.

[videoblogging] Re: itunes censorship?

2005-07-19 Thread Rick Klau

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, andrew michael baron wrote:

I'm thinking the best feature you could ad to feedburner would
be a way for people to incorporate their feed into their regular
 domain name.

Everytime a feed is mentioned anywhere on the net, a directory, a
website, a comment, etc, all of that link authority goes to
feedburner and NOT the user of the feed.

Thus feedburner continues to grow in ranking, while the individual
who has the feed hands over all that authority. For videobloggers
and podcasters, thats a lot to ask for and the #1 reason why I
would never recommend it for a professional or long-term solution.

We implemented this about a month ago, details are here:

http://www.burningdoor.com/feedburner/archives/001270.html

You've always had the option of using .htaccess to redirect your feed
(so you can publicize a feed at your domain and just redirect those
requests to us) - details are here:
http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=17 . That's free (since
it doesn't require any effort on our part, just a line of code on
yours). But with the above post, we've implemented a way for users to
map a sub-domain to us (like feeds.yourdomain.com). We charge a few
bucks a month for that, but either way, we don't want you to give up
control (or any Google juice) of your feed.

[Re: pinging feedburner.com] Does this include a change or edit
 to a post?

So long as you ping us, we'll always draw the most recent version of
the feed. If you don't ping, we'll poll your feed on average every 30
minutes. If there's ever a gap of more than 30 minutes (without a
ping, with pings it's instantaneous), you should let us know so we can
isolate the issue, as that's not expected behavior.

I got a pretty bad taste in my mouth from someone who contacted
me about a month or so ago from feedburner and tried to sell
feedburner to me. After I explained that we were capable on our
own, the person continued to argue sharply through three more
e-mails that feedburner was going to be better for me.

Whoa, that was me! I totally don't remember playing angry sales guy
that day, but please accept my (belated) apologies. I'll now go listen
to the Pauly Shore podcast as penance.

Anyway, as I mentioned throughout to the sales guy, we'll
continue to refer people to you because you are providing a
needed service for free. So thanks again.

Anytime. Appreciate the kind words, and especially the ideas for
improvement.

[videoblogging] smart phone video blogging in Ghana

2005-07-19 Thread Andy Carvin
Title: smart phone video blogging in Ghana

About an hour ago, I posted an entry on my blog about some of the technical challenges to video blogging here in Ghana, including bandwidth and the cost of video cameras. I noted that it might be possible for Ghanaians to explore smart phones with bluetooth as a way of getting around the need for video cameras, but first we'd have to see the growth of smart phones here.

A few minutes later, a local blogger named Mustapha introduced himself. As we chatted, he saw my Treo 600 phone and he said that he just got a Treo 650. I told him about my blog, so we decided to see how hard it would be to use the treo for a Ghanaian video blog. He shot 30 seconds of me talking about video blogging, and he beamed it to my laptop via Bluetooth. I then compressed it as two Quicktime files, one 500k and the other 1.5 megs, then uploaded it via the wi-fi hotspot at the BusyInternet restaurant. The results can be found here:

http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/2005/07/smartphonebluet_1.html

It's far from perfect - it looks like I recorded it on a satellite phone - but it certainly was easy to do. I'll have to do some research to see how prevalent smart phones are here in Ghana, because it might increase the possibility of more Ghanaians getting involved in video blogging... -andy

Re: [videoblogging] Editing Blogger Templates Header/Banner

2005-07-19 Thread HeadsOff(Serra)

This is a CSS trick, if you've ever used CSS its quite easy, if not
it is a tiny bit harder but not much harder. you have to go into the
blogger template and find the part that says

style type=text/css

This is where the styles start.

under this will be a line that looks like this.

#pageHeader {

There will be a bunch of stuff listed directly under it, including

background-image: url( http://www.inserturl.here);

and the url will be that of the image currently displaying.
just change this url to the url of your image in flickr, or wherever
it is. viola!

 Peter,

Can a feed owner change how mefeedia displays the payment link? For
instance, can we get it to say tip jar? Because I love that analogy
(or the hat on the sidewalk one) and think it's the best way to
present such a link to whatever viewers (people who can't turn off
their computers?) I might have out there.

Andreas:
Tech note: Peter, you can do this by using the title attribute from the
link. It's something I wanted to put into the spec, but I haven't
started to
write that yet.

Stephanie,
it's not live yet, but yes, what Andreas said. I will support that, so
you can determine your own text :)

Yeah, the submit a podcast link is the same for vlogs-- vlogs are
treated as podcasts in iTunes. Just make sure everything is set up
before you submit it, or it'll definitely be delayed (and you can't

[videoblogging] YouTube.com Provides Video Hosting For Bite of Seattle 2005

2005-07-19 Thread Jack Olmted

Digital Point-Of-View Photo/Video Contest

Thousands Of Festival Attendees Can Publish Their Videos To Premiere
Online Publishing Site

Seattle, WA – Everyone that attends the 24th annual Bite of Seattle
festival of food, drink and entertainment July 22-24 at the Seattle
Center with a camcorder, digital camera or video recording capable
cell phone is eligible to enter their videos through YouTube.com, a
five-week old free RSS enabled video-blogging community, into the
Bite of Seattle 2005 Digital Point-Of-View Photo/Video Contest.

To enter the online video contest, videographers will need to open a
free account on YouTube.com.

Video File Size: 100 megabytes (maximum)
Video File Formats: WMV, AVI, .MOV, .MPG
Contest Tag: biteofseattle

Contest themes and more information are published on the View-Point
Blog: http://view-point.blogspot.com.

As the Internet evolves from a single user, text based dial-up
experience to a robust broadband international multimedia community,
YouTube will scale to the heavy demands placed on it, explains Chad
Hurley, YouTube founder. Regional events like the Bite of Seattle
in techno savvy regions like the Puget Sound provides an excellent
hands-on showcase for the public, our partners and the press. The
age of video-on-demand as well as personal broadcasting has arrived.

We are very fortunate to be working with the best of breed in free
video sharing sites today, states JOlmsted, the online digital
Seattle Summer 2005 Events contest organizer. The YouTube.com
management team has been a breeze to work with and their engine is
straight forward and simple for the technology challenged to
utilize.

About YouTube

YouTube is a new service that allows people to easily host and
browse personal video clips. It is clear that digital cameras with
video recording capability are quickly becoming a commodity consumer
technology. As people continue to record more personal video clips,
YouTube will fill the same need for videos that Flickr did for
digital photos. http://www.youtube.com

About the Bite Of Seattle

Running since 1982 - when the first Bite attracted 75,000 - the
event has become quite an institution on the food and drink circuit,
offering the chance to discover new world recipes and enjoy the
downright delicious grub. It moved to Seattle Center in 1986 and now
annually attracts something in the region of 450,000 over its three
days.

Hosting over 60 restaurants, the event cooks up an extraordinary set
of statistics: there are over 3.5 miles of gas pipes laid to enable
the cooking; 15 miles of electric cable; 2000 gallons of hot water
used; 175,000 pounds of ice for the 12,000 gallons of pop and -
perhaps most importantly - 365 kegs of beer!
http://www.biteofseattle.com

About the Digital Photo/Video Contest

Flickr.com is the social photo-sharing site that is being used to
host contest images. An expanding prize list, theme categories,
corresponding blogs, links, photo highlights, files and more
information, is now available on the Yahoo Group FreFair -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/frefair and the View-Point Blog -
http://view-point.blogspot.com

The Seattle Bite of Seattle Digital Point-Of-View Photo/Video
Contest is NOT associated with the Bite of Seattle.

[videoblogging] Podcast/Video Blog Compatibility Issues

2005-07-19 Thread Pat Cook (Jeeper One TV)

Hi everyone:

This is probably much along the same lines as Josh Kinberg's post in
the podcasters Yahoo! Group, but what I'm thinking what's needed next
is a podcatcher that's like FireANT interface-wise, but can play
podcasts AS WELL AS video blogs.

Not sure if the FireANT devs have thought of this (please feel free
to clarify guys :) ), but I'm thinking that, when it comes to
aggregators and associated software, the podcasting movement and the
video blogging movement will eventually have to, at least to some
extent, merge into one.

There's little to no question at all that the two movements basically
have the same goal. That is to BECOME the media. But one of the
areas where podcasters and video bloggers part ways is in the area of
software development. This needs to change IMO.

I suppose what I'm really getting at is that what's needed is to
*standardize* the development of software.

Unless there's some developing going on behind the scenes, I doubt
iPodder will have an embedded player until iPodder 3 is released. So
I'm thinking it's more likely that FireANT will probably be equipped
with full support to play back podcasts before iPodder 3 comes out
(Please feel free to correct me on this Josh, Eric, Steve or
whoever :) ). I say this because all FireANT really needs is an
option to download podcasts in a seperate directory than it does
videos AND an automagic feed checking feature which will, if
allowed by the user, download podcasts AS WELL AS video blogs into
said directories like iPodder does (It probably already has this for
video blogs, though since I don't really watch video blogs as
regularly as much as I listen to podcasts, I really can't say for
sure either way) and it's good to go as THE ULTIMATE podcatcher/video
blog aggregator.

This discussion is also taking place on the podcasters group as well,
but I figured I'd post over here so people here can add their $.02
worth as well. :)

Just a few thoughts :)

Dude, FireANT has *always* been able to download and play podcasts.
It syncs with iTunes too, just like other podcatchers.

Please don't use this list for self promotional copypaste press

warning about vendor behaviour on this list. Don't do this again.

it has been quick to serve for past few weeks or so almost immediate in most cases
however, the IA is suffering badly and cant seem to handle the demand
ourmedia has put on it at least not efficiently. so, i think
the prob is with IA.

[videoblogging] Archiving your Vid's

2005-07-19 Thread Starfire

Hello fellow Vloggers.

I have just spent the evening backing up my hard drive and making
room for future Vlog posts. This got me wondering how you guys go
about saving your work. I used to save the whole project I was
working on but I was filling up hard drives faster than I could
afford new ones. Now I have started saving a full-quality version and
trashing the project. This saves space but makes it impossible to
change them in the future.

I also tend to tape over the source tapes once I have completed a
project.

So what do you do?

Just wondering.

 Here's what I do:
 1. I keep all of my tapes.
 2. I export my video as a full resolution DV file.
 3. I back up these DV files on DVDs - note: this is not the same as
making a DVD! These are DV files, 4.5min/GB so only about 18 minutes
fit on a single layer DVD.

Since I use Final Cut Pro, I could save my project files and recreate
the project later to make changes but I don't. I figure it's a
record of a particular time. I can always go back to the original
tapes and make something else out of it if I want.
