Have you considered buying an XLR-1/4 balanced adapter and a 1/4
balanced-1/8 adapter? Then you could use XLR microphones and get a
better selection.

I don't know how bad the sound will degrade through the adapters, but I
don't think it'd be too bad. I recently did the audio for a video using
an XLR-1/4-1/8 setup and taking the sound from a venue's PA system.
Sounded really good in the headphones.

+1 to what Rhett said.

Get an XLR mic like a Shure SM58 and get a cord with male XLR on one end and
male 1/8
mono jack on the other end.

Another option is to buy a shotgun mic that will sit on top of your camera, but
it depends
on your application.

Third option is wired/wirless Lavalier. Wireless lav would be the best for
isolating one
person in a crowd, but the most expensive.

The Shure 58
(http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/WiredMicrophones/us_pro_SM58-CN_content)is
a good rugged mic. Unidirectional and plenty of them available used
and cheap. It also means you can afford to buy more then one 58 or add
a 57
(http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/WiredMicrophones/us_pro_SM57-LC_content)to
your kit.

Audio Technica makes great gear. The sound companies (touring) film

High end but quality you can depend on.

I like the Beyerdynamic
M58 - Omni-Directional ENG Microphone.
but the Electro Voice 635A - ENG Microphone is close and half the price.

For your cable:
You can make this cable yourself if you have the parts and handy with
a soldering iron:

With Monster Cable's iStudioLink XLR to 1/8 Mini Plug you can connect
your microphone directly to your laptop or desktop computer. This
single cable provides you with a fast, flexible connection to record
vocal tracks directly to your Apple software, like GarageBand and
LogicExpress. Just plug one end into your microphone's XLR male
audio-out and the other directly into your computer's 1/8 audio input
and you are ready to go.

Wireless is cool. Costly if you want reliability. Lots of factors,
UHF/VHF, potential interference (meaning best to have selectable freq
control), power source (if not used with a dedicated battery pack) and
Murphy's Law. Wireless with a full compliment of traditionally wired
mics using transmitters is one way to go. Again the reciever and
transmitter should have control of the frequencies to tune into a
free or clean signal in areas with interference

Here is a little light reading with good info.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Irina is on boingboing today for SNL parody, boobs in a box

2006-12-27 Thread groups-yahoo-com
What I love most about viral media is it's so... long tail.

Those outside of the obscura, not in the know, would ironically
interpret it as niave when in fact it is the very height of visual and
languistic fashion.

It's the way I've felt for a long time about a certain class of film
and comedy that comes out of the midewest and canada... it's very much
traceable back to the kids in the hall, but there are atleast half a
dozen movies from the midwest and canada that take a departure down
this road. Movies most have never heard of, like American Movie and
it's counterpart Koven... or a movie I just discovered called Project
Grizzley from Canada.

The point is the new frontier is that universe beteween brilliance and
the mundane, exploring the sophisticated side of asethetics and visual
language.

This is very much what the art of the remix is all about. Those not
having seen dick in the box would probably not get the boob in a box
remix at all. But the beutiful thing is it's an abstraction and
exporation of of an aesthetical language. There have undoubtedly been
dozens of remixes before and since boobs in a box and you can trace
there evolution forward and backward... probably maing a study of
where the lonely island guys got the idea from.

Sometimes these even become an entire distinct microgenre... much like
the movie trailer remix has become. It's truely brilliant. And yet to
outsiders it appears as nothing more than another bad video on
youtube.

(BTW, it may look like a photo op, but Edwards has been working out
here all day and has been providing major support since last year
 when Katrina hit).

[videoblogging] In Honor of President Ford

2006-12-27 Thread Josh Leo
In a matter of days former President Gerald Ford will be buried here in
Grand Rapids, I covered some of the happenings at his museum today here:

An older, perhaps less reverent, video about Gerald Ford:

http://tinyurl.com/u32s5

I am going vacation and coming back the same day as President Ford's body,
but arriving late in the night. I am going to try to change my flight to
return earlier to cover some of the visitation, etc...

RE: [videoblogging] John Edwards to Run for President (announcement on YouTube)

Like every sharp tongued, shrew-like young female, who grew up in the North
East, Hillary Clinton is my role model and my support goes behind her in the
primaries. If she loses the primary, then I hope she does so to Edwards, who is
my second choice; but right now this country needs an intelligent, rational
woman's touch, not another pretty boy! (and yes, that was a bit of
mudslinging!):) Obreahny O'BrienTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Wed,

Today Joanne, Chuck and I are out in New Orleans.

We just filmed John Edwards' first announcement that he is running
for president.

I just uploaded the video to John Edwards' YouTube account.

[videoblogging] Re: Burning videos to disk

2006-12-27 Thread Gena
First place I thought of was http://www.videohelp.com/guides

Go to the how-to category and then select the various formats that you
asked about. The should have tutorials up the wazoo on how to do this
with both free and low cost software.

There are 645 guides in this topic so if the first one doesn't do it
for you keep plowing down, you'll find it.

PC Magazine also has a few goodies for you:

Do any of you have any tools and/or tips for burning such disks? I
did a
search and found all kinds of shareware out there claiming to do
that, but I
don't know how good any of it is.
