Re: [videoblogging] Amazon S3 for Flash Videos
Yes, I do. Its what we run all of our video hosting on for Mux.am and Cruxy.com. Basically, the rate is 15 cents per GB stored per month, and 18 cents per GB transfered out each month. So, 3GB of storage will cost 45 cents a month, and 60GB transfered will be $10.80 month. It works well for progressive video streaming - somewhat of a lightweight CDN. The downside is that it does basically infinitely scale - if you get Dugg or Boing'd be prepared for the costs, as S3 will handle just about any load you can throw at it. +Nathan On Dec 18, 2007 2:11 PM, Jay dedman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nathan-- do you know much about Amazon's s3 service? [videoblogging] Re: Free Flash Player with Advanced Delivery Capabilities from Swarmcast
Welcome, I was just reading about Autobahn HD the other day, sounds interesting, I like the idea of automatic bandwidth adjustment. I'll try it myself once h264 support in flash is out of beta, am I right to assume you will support h264? Some reasons why you may receive a less than stellar response: No OS X version! When I was interested in your product, I assumed that no client was needed, I guess I was wrong, even for the flash version? I tried to work this out for myself by looking for info for developers, but when I click developer links all I get is a blog with no detailed developer info that I can see. Why bother promoting links to a developers part of your site if all it does is tell develpers to email you? Of more interest to service/platform develoeprs/businesses than end-producers. I think most leave the flash delivery up to a service to worry about, such as blip.tv. I read you have a deal with veoh, does that include flash versions of their vids? So anyways, this sort of technology does not get talked about on this list as much as it used to a few years back, when content delivery was more of a headache for more video creators. Where can I see a HD demo? As a UK viewer that received less than amazingly smooth downloads, your product may fix a problem I have, but I want to see it in all its glory. The sample Ive seen doesnt really demonstrate to me why the HD should be in the name of the product, but as I am on OS X Im not sure what Im actually seeing on the swarmcast page demo player. As HD becomes more normal for flash, with hardware accelerated fullscreen h264 support in flash, Im going to get interested in watching content in high quality. Maybe my bandwidth wont always be up to the job, and I'll be prepared to put up with pauses during download, in order to get the better quality version. Does your product limit such possibilities, will it always try to serve me a version based on bandwidth, rather than image quality? I understand it is adaptive in terms of bitrate, but its very common to offer different resolutions of video as well, can it handle that, I would guess not? So If i had a site where I offered video at 3 different resolutions, your product wont do anything to eliminate the user having to make that choice, they would still need to pick an appropriate video manually, and your product would help ensure that whatever video they picked, downloaded at a suitable bitrate for the bandwidth available at any one time? Oh I dunno, Im sure your product has some great potential uses, but a reason that flash video in the browser caught on is that it didnt require any more software installs, so if a client app is needed for viewers to receive any benefit from your system, I lose interest a lot. There is potential, but the more invisible you can make your tech the better, and the buzz and interest in your product will come from the video service providers etc, not so much here. Unless of course the results are so amazing that users just fall over themselves to install your app, and again I assume it will be the services/hosts/new networks that will encouraging users to do this, either by providing the content that could truly benefit (eg HD) or making your app part of their app, or otherwise promoting the use of your tech. Just please tell me Im wrong and it works without client-side install, or at least that an OS X version will really exist soon. [videoblogging] Flash player with h264 has been out since 3rd december
Just noticed that the non-beta h264 version of the flash player came out earlier this month, and I hadnt even noticed. Did this get any fanfare yet? Anyway its got various other fixes and improvements, including to the VP6 codec, so its possible that for fullscreen HD the VP6 might be advantageous compared to h264 under some scenario's. I would hope that some of the performance improvements will show up for existing flash players video content, eg less CPU use, but testing a while ago on the beta suggests that there will be much to be gained in terms of fullscreen performance, if people rewrite their flash player code slightly to take advantage of things like hardware-assisted fullscreen. I guess most video sites will wait till more people have installed the new flash player, which is fair enough, but I cant wait for this new era. Any vloggers trying the mp4 capabilities of the new flash yet? If you aready offer a mp4 version of your video, it could be a relative doddle, and although its probably too early to get rid of your flv versions just yet, you could always offer the mp4 embedded through flash option as well. Im sure I will talk about this topic some more very soon, with some iffy examples. Cheers Steve Elbows

[videoblogging] Re: Flash player with h264 has been out since 3rd december
Not entirely catching your drift there. You shouldnt need anything different in terms of encoder to explore the h264 flash stuff. If you already offer h264 as a mov or mp4/m4v, you should be able to have that same video play in a webpage in a flash player. Some existing flash video players probably work already, although most will not yet utilise fullscreen mode in the least cpu-hungry way. Some may not work perfectly with h264, eg you may have to cheat and rename them to .flv, although quite a few did change their code when the h264 beta came out. I need to get up-to-date as to what the score is with the popular flash video players in this regard. If you arent trying to improve these players yourself, you shouldnt need to buy flash. Here is a not-particularily great h264 video playing inside flash, that is shown using a slightly modified player I messed with a few months ago. Its taxing on the system due to the res bitrate used, I would expect a lot of people to be far more conservative with these choices so that slower computers arent excluded. Im not entirely sure if hardware fullscreen mode is working on that example, it should be but I may have set something wrong back when I wrote it, cant recall. Anyway playback may appear smoother in fullscreen mode, and for me CPU useage on OS X Leopard was less on firefox 2 than safari 3. The pint is, this is a .mp4 h264 video that had no special treatment in order to work with flash: http://www.unquack.com/mediaplayere.html (latest flash player required) Anyways I should try shortly with a video that is more normal in terms of res and bitrate, but the above gives a rough idea what sort of perforamnce you can expect with HD stuff, though it isnt a very good video for studying quality etc. Cheers Steve Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Brook Hinton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: For those of us mac folks not skilled in the ways of the geek or posessing of the cash needed for flash itself, we have to wait for some sort of mpeg streamclip/ffmpegx/compressor means of exploring this new frontier, unless there's some other method I don't know about. Yeah like a GUI or ActiveX control of some kind. VP6 would have to be mightily improved if it were to look good at full screen for anything with a lot of details moving around quickly. Just before I entered the world of videoblogging, I was amongst those dabbling with using Winamp's Nullsoft Streaming Video format to stream video with. Never could quite get a handle on it and even then, without hosting (And there's VERY little of it that supports NSV in addition to SHOUTcast), my wee wittle TV station could only get one (Maybe two) viewers at once. And this was just with pre-recorded and converted videos @ 320 x 240 at around 10 fps. On top of that, I could just about FORGET streaming my cam using NSV. It would crash and burn usually within 30 minutes. With sites like Justin TV and BlogTV and other more traditional cam sites, I can put my cam up - AND LEAVE IT UP - For DAYS at a time if I really wanted to. Maybe when I *FINALLY* upgrade this six year old boatanchor of a PC I've got *Dreamfully sighing* I'm going all HD for 2008, so I am paying attention to fullscreen developments. But since things are only just now the point where I can offer just h.264 quicktime and most everyone can see it, I'm not rushing into anything. I'm gonna go HD, but in Windows Media format instead. I'll do this simply by uploading the source video generated by Windows Movie Maker (Now that I've FINALLY got it fixed - Yay! :D) as I encode at 768K wth a screen resolution @ 640 x 480. As you offer windows media format videos, have you considered offering them within a silverlight video player? I know silverlight hasnt exactly set the world on fire so far, but as Microsoft bothered to make a version for the Mac, it potentially offers a less painful way for viewers on other OS's to watch windows media video in browser, now and in the future. Indeed Microsoft were trumpeting the use of silverlight for HD earlier in the year, which is possibly why Adobe came along and slightly trumped them with the 'h264 in flash' thing. These are very closely competing technologies, both offer the ability for video, including HD, to be better integrated into websites, to be a slightly more appealing experience than users had in the past. Windows users wont need quicktime to see h264 in browser, OS X users wont need an alternative method to play wmv's.Fullscreen mode comes of age. The technology is now there and available, jsut need to wait and see what developers/sites/services or individuals start using it. [videoblogging] Remain Calm
Many of you might already be following the overblown, but pertinent, uproar over Lane Hartwell's photos being used in a viral video. It's interesting because it's a argument between an independent photographer and an independent band. its an argument over Fair Use and Creative Commons. The band says they didnt think they had to attribute anyone since their work was Fair Use. Lane Hartwell says she just wanted credit in the video. Here's a good wrap up of the controversy: http://www.plagiarismtoday.com/2007/12/18/analysis-on-the-lane-hartwell-bubble-controversy/ here's the take away that applies to all of us as we're learning how to use, but respect, each others work. *Attribute Obsessively*: If you use other people's content in any way, attribute, attribute well and attribute graciously. It is best to follow industry standards here and to start out with the intention of doing so rather than having to go back and do it later, when it is much harder. *Don't Go Public*: Nothing is ever gained by going public with a copyright dispute. [videoblogging] Any tips on workflow?
I just wrote a post and did a vlog on the workflow I'm using to import and organize all the footage from Project Pedal... I thought this would be a great place to find tips and advice on how to best structure my workflow. You can watch the video here http://blog.projectpedal.com/2007/12/week-one-my-workflow.html to see what I'm already doing. Thanks so much! I really appreciate everyone's help! Re: [videoblogging] Remain Calm
Can I ask you guys a question about attribution?? How are you all attributing each others work while staying creative? Can someone suggest some best practice to doing it.. at least in the video blogging-web video way. I ask the question for couple reasons. First, I run a website and program called the WGBH Lab.. we share WGBH clips using the cc non- commerical share-a-like license through a tool we have called Sandbox. Each clip carries a WGBH watermark for this very reason, attribution. Over the past few months though, we have been asking ourselves if the watermark is good idea or not. I have my own reasons to keep it, marketing. But I'm finding that it can be a pain in the butt for users of the content. How would or how are you, attributing the content that your sharing? best, Chris Attributing On Dec 18, 2007, at 5:55 PM, Jay dedman wrote: Many of you might already be following the overblown, but pertinent, uproar over Lane Hartwell's photos being used in a viral video. According to what I read, her picture was posted All Rights Reserved, so it was dumb of them to take it and not expect a takedown notice. Even if they had attributed, it wasn't posted (to my knowledge) with a CC-Attribution license in the first place. She claims to have contacted them and they didn't do anything about it, so she got a lawyer, and their video went down. They should have replaced that one picture, re-uploaded and continued with their success. They didn't do that, so they caught a takedown. Also, that's what they get for posting the video for youtube. Everybody knows that youtube was built on piracy, so now, they're quick to take down videos for the slightest bullshit reason *coughpauldatehcoughcough* If you're going to do something like that, contact the owners of the content for permission, only use CC licensed material or expect a takedown if you post it on YouTube. In 2004, the Democratic National Convention credentialed 30 blogs for the Convention. In 2008, we're going to be credentialing many more in 2008 in Denver, Colorado. I'll spare the details here, but we're credentialing 56 state bloggers/videobloggers for what is being called the State Blogger Corp. We're going to credential one blogger per state, DC and the territories. Then we have a general blogger pool where bloggers can apply for credentials. Check out this link for the Q and A. http:// demconvention.wordpress.com/blogger-credentaling-process/ Jason, thanks for posting this. I followed up with him to make it more clear. Bloggers should fill out this application for credentials to the Democratic National Convention: http://www.demconvention.com/a/2007/12/dncc_press_gall.html Be aware of these qualifications: - Blogs applying for the DemConvention State Blogger Corps must have been in existence for at least six months and have at least 120 political posts. - You will be required to provide objective data that demonstrates your circulation, reach, and frequency. Blogs should provide their authority from Technorati.com. How many people here do a specifically political videoblog? I can only think of Chuck and David Howell at the Uptake. I'd love to see someone at the Republican National Convention.
