[videoblogging] Blip is creating its own RSS feed for shows?

2008-02-14 Thread Roxanne Darling
Hi Videobloggers,
I discovered tonight that Blip has created a separate RSS feed that it is
using for our RSS and iTunes links on the detail page. I don't know how
long this has been in place but I very upset and disappointed. Would some
of the rest of you please check your links and see if this has happened to
you? Our original RSS and iTunes links are in use on the main Beach Walks
show page for 3 out of 4 of the links; the hijacked RSS links are on the
Pando link on the main show page and on all links on the detail pages. We
very specifically manage our RSS through Feedburner because it allows us to
point our feed where ever we are hosting our files and our iTunes show page
is very important for us for gathering reviews, etc. To have a whole new
feed that blip is pointing people to is in direct contradiction to our
goals. I understand more and more sites are doing this; I am not happy
about it and I am just so surprised.

I prefer to not ignite the flame wars, but I would like to see what the rest
of you are experiencing and think about this. Blip is renowned for their
communication skills, so I expect them to be giving us some explanations
ASAP.

Aloha,

Rox

[videoblogging] Re: HD quality on YouTube

2008-02-14 Thread Steve Woolf
I'm fairly certain this doesn't work anymore, unfortunately. We've
tried a half dozen methods to get better encoding quality on YouTube
and none of them work anymore. In fact, YT seems to have a consistent
problem re-encoding the EPIC-FU intro for some reason.

Here's to hoping that 2008 brings quality improvements to the encoding
on the large hosting sites.

However it is only for a PC... MACs are left out. A while ago, I

  awful. Has
  YT changed this recently?

Apparently you have to do some trickery to get it to work, which is
kind of
 lame.

Following the steps in the tutorial here:
 http://youtube.com/watch?v=08NI4cy4zik

You get a pristine looking video at under 1 minute, down to slightly
better
than YouTube results at 4 minutes. Apparently over 4 minute videos won't
 work.

I don't think you actually need the tool the guy recommends, you
just need
to know the right command line hashes for FFMPEG (meaning you should
be able
to use FFMPEGX or WinFF or SUPER). Licensing a copy of the On2 codec
 probably wouldn't hurt either.

If you click the More link in his description for the video, he
definitely
has a bunch of great looking footage posted (relative to the way other
 YouTube vids look at least).

Rox,
this might work:
http://blip.tv/prefs/external/

It seems that Blip is allowing us to input an iTunes URL to pull
instead of the one that is generated via blip.

I'm going to check it out right now.

Hope this helps.

Re: [videoblogging] Blip is creating its own RSS feed for shows?

2008-02-14 Thread David Meade
Yes they do make feeds, but they also allow you to specify your blogs
feeds and your media feed and itunes feed.

The blip generated feed will still show up in some places, but my
davidmede.com feeds show up in the player and various other places.
(I'm honestly not sure what pando is)

I would love for more control over when which external url is
displayed where (for example I wish the show blog url on my show page
would point to my external blog url) but for the most part I think
(assuming you have set up external feed links) that blip generated
feed urls are mostly only on the dynamic non-show pages (like tag
views or search results for example). Feed urls on your show page
should generally point to the external feed url you've set up. (I
believe ??)

[videoblogging] Re: QuckTime 7.4 and FCP 4.5HD Disaster -- Finally, A Solution

2008-02-14 Thread Stan Hirson, Sarah Jones
This has to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had with
Apple! I had too casually made the update to QT 7.4 and could capture
only about 5 minutes on FCP 4.5 until the picture froze while the
audio continued. It turned out to be the QT 7.4 update scanning for
some kind of DRM code. The boards were seething with folks who had
problems with not only FCP but AE, etc. MacFixit suggested Pacifist
to reinstall 7.3 but that did not solve the capture problems on any of
my machines. I was backing up and cloning the backups for testing,
etc. Tried everything that was suggested.

Finally, I noticed that I had an old QT 7.0.1 reinstaller on hand from
a previous Apple screw-up when one had to deinstall 7.1.

And...

It worked!

I first noticed the problem on Jan. 24 and it was only until a few
minutes ago that I made my final tests.

So, if anyone is stuck with this problem, try the 7.0.1 reinstaller.
And in the future, don't update until it has been out for a while and
check with MacFixit. I guess everyone knows that, but it takes a
disaster to remind one of it.

But... I want to say a few words about Apple. This has been
a mess and a known issue on lots of boards (2-Pop, Creative Cow,
MacRumors, etc.) but Apple remained mum about it and has not
acknowledged it as a problem nor offered a specific fix. I also
visited 3 large Apple Stores and spoke to clueless
geniuses who were unable to help or make a call to Cupertino or lead
me to Pro Support.

I've has Apples (as well as PCs) since the II+ days. It's a different
company since the iPod. Wormy.

I'm having the same conversation with Podango right now and they seem

Re: [videoblogging] Net-Neutrality

2008-02-14 Thread Patrick Delongchamp
Jay, what you have to realize is that these aren't false limits. In
fact, bandwidth limits are usually false in the other sense. They
limits purposely allow for too much bandwidth knowing that not all
users will reach the limits or at least not all at the same time.
Additionally, there will always be a 5% that uses more bandwidth than
the general public. Of course an ISP is going to upgrade it's
networks in preparation for increased usage but it isn't going to do
so solely for the 5% of users who are using 50% of the bandwidth. How
can you argue that it doesn't make sense to charge these users more
money? This is what bandwidth limits do, they allow you to pay more
if you want to use more.

I'll also point out that bandwidth limits do not fall under net neutrality.

In canada, I have no doubt that Rogers places their VOIP phone service
packets ahead of regular internet traffic. I think it's great. It
allows people in Ontario to experience cheaper telephone services with
high call quality. Innovation would suffer without this ability. If
our health care board wanted to set up long distance surgery with
specialists in other provinces or countries, I think it would be great
to be able to be able to use the 2nd tier and ensure a low latency
connection. A second tiered internet allows for things like this. If
it's anti-competitive, let the courts deal with it. Don't just stifle
it completly just in case when there's absolutely no evidence nor is
there even reason to believe the internet would slow down. Who would
you rather use 50% of your bandwidth, people who aren't paying for it,
or people who are? In what scenario would you get a faster network?
In what scenario would there be reason to invest large amounts of
money in making your clients happy? They're not going to improve
their network to make 5% of their clients happy who aren't paying a
penny more than the other 95%. They're going to improve it for those
paying more. They're also not going to allow the 95% to deal with a
slow connection.

Because of Comcasts bandwidth management, your videoblogs (that aren't
distributed via torrents) load faster. Rogers manages torrent traffic
in Toronto and I don't experience a connection that is any slower than
when I am traveling to the states. Bell Canada (when i was using it
last year) didn't manage torrent packets and it wasn't any faster.

You shouldn't legislate out of fear. Especially when it stifles the
economy and innovation.

I contend (as does most of the industry) that tomorrow's 95% will be
 today's 5%.
Broadband companies MUST expand the network.

Putting false limits based on bandwidth now stifles innovation.
again, i think we just read the situation differently.

It makes more sense to place limitations or charge
more for special cases. In Canada there are bandwidth gaps but
they're really high. I've never reach mine, nor do i ever even worry
about it. (or have ever heard of anyone reaching theirs) Apparently,
they have the same in the UK. These aren't evil practices. They make
   a lot of sense.

as i said, as a customer, Id love to hear what these companies have in

so far, all their thinking and decisions are being made behind closed

how much will people pay and not complain?
ever look at your bank/credit card fees? (probably not...too small)

But Patrick, I will be positive like you. we'll wait and see.
lets remember this conversation when the details come out.

As for 2nd tiered internet, there's no reason to believe the internet
would slow down. Why would an ISP accept money from NBC and slow down
traffic for the general public. Once again, comcast has already
demonstrated that this is unlikely. (seeing as they slowed down NBC
torrents so that people could surf and read email faster) With a
second tiered internet, NBC could pay more to be routed through better
   infrastructure.

cool. then there's nothing to worry about.
  we just trust them.
  (have they earned your trust?)

Considering Blip and Youtube already pay for high bandwidth servers,
there's a good chance they and other startus would have the cash to
pay for this higher tier so your videoblogs would most likely download
faster. At the worst, they would probably download at the same
   speeds.

  sounds good.
  is this in writing somewhere?

It's interesting that this discussion is very much about our beliefs
regarding the basic nature of people.

I could (easily and happily) give a long lecture on the history of this
fundamental question within the field of psychology ... behaviorism
(selfish); psychoanalysis (selfish); evolutionary psychology (selfish),
humanistic psychology (not selfish), positive psychology (not selfish) and
more recent research on altruism, happiness, and well being (all not
selfish).

However, when most of us really think about this, and reflect on the things
that have made us happiest - in the deepest sense - in our lives, the answer
is obvious, though contrary to popular belief.

Most of the time, people don't help people because they are going to get
something out of it, it's because it feels good. Helping someone else is the
most powerfully and deeply reinforcing thing we can do. That's the way
humans are. The happiest people are the ones that spend the most time
helping others (consistent with research on happiness and well being) -
terminology thing: happiness/well being, not necessarily the same thing as
pleasure - especially immediate pleasure.

Allow me to present this case study from the business world of a successful
company.

There is this company called Blip.tv. I use their services a lot, and have
had the pleasure of interacting with the people who run blip since near the
company's inception.

All my interactions with my blip friends (Charles, Mike, and Dina) indicate
to me that they very much enjoy making people happy. It does not appear to
me that they are being good people in order to make their business succeed,
rather, their business is succeeding because they are good people.

Re: [videoblogging] Blip is creating its own RSS feed for shows?

2008-02-14 Thread Roxanne Darling
Patrick,
You are correct, anyone with a little tech savvy can copy an RSS link and
paste it into iTunes.
There are a couple of important points that you missed though.

1) Being able to control one's feed is very important for me as a show
creator. Having subscribers subscribed at various URLs makes it very
difficult to track users and impossible to move a feed if that should become
necessary in the future.

2) I credited Blip with being able to address this, and they have. I also
wanted others on the list to help me out - to see if they were experiencing
a similar problem. People stepped in right away with useful information and
all benefitted from Blip's explanation.

3) None of us has the ability to change individual links that appear on Blip
- only our default settings. So I was not able to Just simply change the
iTunes link and MOVE ON.

4) As it turns out it was a bug, so we helped Blip and they helped us. As I
do a daily show I am often something of the canary in the coal mine when
they roll out new things, hence I am aware of (and stated) Blip's awesome
customer service. Angus replied here several hours ago. I gave them a heads
up last nite.

5) There is an increasing trend of video aggregators to hijack feeds. I am
staunchly against this unless there is upfront notification to the show
creator.

6) Most of all, I am crazy busy, and am the first to admit I sometimes miss
the details. I am very grateful the community was here for me, as I stated,
as an extra set of eyes and explainers.

As a sidebar, I think if people are not reading messages in the threaded
view, they may be missing some of the conversation. Skipping from one to the
end does not convey the whole discussion, especially when commenters snip
out some of the previous messages. Blip responded hours ago on this thread;
it appears you missed you that?

Anyway, cheers backatcha and may the love continue to flow - it is still
Valentine's Day in most parts of the world!

Aloha,

Rox

But on the camera/deck end, for DV and HDV, it's all we've got unless
you go with a tower and an uncompressed card. At least we now have
 eSATA for drives.

I'm fairly certain this doesn't work anymore, unfortunately. We've
tried a half dozen methods to get better encoding quality on YouTube
and none of them work anymore. In fact, YT seems to have a consistent
problem re-encoding the EPIC-FU intro for some reason.

I uploaded my Semanal videos to YT and it was strange. One looked no different
qualitatively
to the FLV I uploaded, while the other 3 look like turds. Obviously re-encoded.
Wondering if
duration had any bearing on this. Disapointing.

[videoblogging] Google Video Sitemaps

2008-02-14 Thread Charles Iliya Krempeaux
Did I just miss this when it was announced about Google Video Sitemaps?

http://www.insideonlinevideo.com/2007/12/21/google-introduces-video-sitemaps/
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/12/introducing-video-sitemaps.html

It seems like a way to get video thumbnails to show up on the Google
search results pages. (Like how it already does for YouTube videos.)

Is anyone using this yet on their video blogs?

Coming soon to Show in a Nox? :-)
