Re: [videoblogging] Re: Windows Movie Maker---New Version
The thing I found was that people who were good at fiddling with computers could figure out Windows Movie Maker, but that's not good enough. Nor are the automatic titles and transitions. Even those people who do get on well with it - once they've figured out the ridiculous routines for doing 'complicated' things like altering title colours/fonts and trimming clips - quickly hit a brick wall in terms of what they can do creatively. If you contrast it with iMovie or the cheap versions of Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, you can see how limiting and primitive it is. Those programs are not only easier to learn, they allow people to stretch their creative wings and learn to exercise more control and fine- tuning in their filmmaking and editing. There are probably some of my prior rants about it still in the archives. I tried to get along with that sucker. I really did. But there came a point in frustration where I could stand it no longer. In hindsight, maybe it was too hard to design a movie making program that operated on Pentium or Celeron class machines. Yet Microsoft wasn't about to let one of the selling points of the Mac go unchallenged. The first effort on Windows ME royally sucked. Windows Movie Maker2 did make it easy to create basic videos. But if you had to really edit or get video from different parts of your video, Kaboom, down it went. I'm on Vista with a Dual-Core 32bit system now. I have used Windows Movie Maker for quickies, making titles or really short projects. It hasn't crashed or locked up yet. I have other software that I use as my main editing programs (Corel Video Studio X12 and Serif Movie Plus X3). I do hope they can make this work. But I ain't fooling with it until it is confirmed and certified that the bugs, cooties and ickys have been cleansed from the code. As movie makers ourselves, we're in the same boat as you are. We want those fun shatter transitions and warp effects just as much as you do! We're definitely working on improving this and plan to have a range of rich-editing capabilities in the first official version. - - You'd like something resembling a timeline in the product. In the Movie Maker beta, the storyboard didn't have the ability to represent time like a traditional timeline would. We've heard you say that you'd like to be able to drag and drop clips to get them to start and end where you want, and that you'd like to have music and text that span multiple photos or video clips. We've also heard that you'd like to at a glanc e see which clips are longer than others, which clips have effects applied, and which clips have transitions. Now, I don't want to give too much away just yet (we still have work to do!), but we're definitely aware of these limitations. We've developed a new approach that we think will help address some of the shortcomings of the beta and will scale well from novice to experienced users without requiring people to switch views in order to get things done. I love that, You'd like something resembling a timeline in the product. I dont mean to rip on Microsoft, but it's a little insane that it;s a big revelation that a video editing program needs a good timeline as a workspace. Anyway...glad they are updating. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Windows Movie Maker---New Version
Good revision. :) I always found WMM 2.1 to be reasonably stable and used it for most of my vlogs. People were always surprised which editor I used. ( http://cookingkittycorner.blip.tv/file/44076/) Previous versions would crash regularly but that was over 5 years ago. As for Comic Sans Serif...I'm not sure that was ever a default font. I think you can blame general bad taste for that one. On Sat, Jun 6, 2009 at 4:49 AM, Jay dedman jay.ded...@gmail.com wrote: Aw man. You know what? I'm going to have to disagree with you guys. The same way that Josh Leo can take a $2 camera and take awesome, thought-provoking photos, a video editor can take a not-top-of-the-line video editor and make a really kick-butt video. ...and not to argue, but crappy movies on YouTube can be made with iMovie and Final Cut Pro on their daddy's computer just as easy as they can on Windows Movie Maker... just sayin. I've made some fun videos with Movie Maker, like this set called Kid Vids, some shorts all from one day last summer: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kitykity/sets/72157606379352536 I'll admit that I was probably over-aggressive to condemn Movie Maker. A talented video creator can make gems out of anything. I guess Im speaking from the experience of teaching many newbies how to edit for the very first time. More often than not, they have a PC...so Movie Maker is what we deal with. It's not the most intuitive program to start with. Hopefully this long-awaited update will bring improvements.
