Thanks, Jay. Do cars get hot enough that I should stick my miniDV tape in a
cooler?

Any vloggers meeting up at Burning Man? I'm a BM newbie--any tips on keeping
my camera safe from sand? Is there anything like a secret handshake I need
  to know ;)

i used the waterproof Xacti when I went in 2007. The waterproof system
seemed to help keep the dust out. If you have a bigger rig, good luck.
Not sure how to keep the dust out.

Arin Crumley is at Burning Man to get more video for some kind of
 movie he's making:

But don;t stressjust go out and wander the Playa. And don't take
 the brown acid.

[videoblogging] Re: Collecting stats on wordpress.com

2008-03-31 Thread jimmyjay24
Hey Markus – I requested stats at SHVH but we never got to it. Too
much merriment ;)

A blog hosted at wordpress.com can not use google analytics. From
their FAQ: We already use Google Analytics code to monitor the domain
in ways that provide us with useful information to benefit the service
we offer. It is not possible to use two instances of Google Analytics
on one page.

I'm wondering if the geeks in the group are skipping this thread
because it has wordpress.com in the header. I may have to rephrase
the question.

 Hi Jim,

I forget if we spoke about this at the last SHVH, but how about
goggle analytics? Lots of
free stats available there depending on what you are looking for.

I wonder if they be adding video related features in the near
future? They have added
video features to google search recently, so perhaps they will begin
to offer analytic tools
 and stats for video soon.

im not the best one to answer.
but if you look at Federated Media...they seem to charge by page views:
 http://www.federatedmedia.net/authors/index

Your video stats would probably be the click throughs.

  2) Should I stick with the wordpress.com feed or install feedburner?
wordpress is slowly bringing back feed stats. They currently let me
see how many hits on a particular post come from its feed and they'll
eventually let me know the total number of feed subscribers. But
wordpress is rolling out new features slowly. Feedburner will give me
clickthroughs. Are there other compelling reasons to go with
feedburner? I realize I may want to use feedburner to capture email
  subscribers.

feedburner is nice because if you ever decide to change your feed in
the future, you can switch it out...and viewers wont know the
 difference.
this is a nice feature of Feedburner.

  3) Do I want to install a stat counter and, if so, which one should I
install? The only stat counters that wordpress.com supports are
sitemeter, statcounter, shiny stats and activemeter. I lean towards
  sitemeter—anyone having issues with sitemeter?

 dont know this one.

  4) If I switch to a self-hosted blog with wordpress.org, will that
cause a problem? What do I need to know about transitioning my stats?

im not sure i understand your question.
whatever stat counter you use should work on whatever blog you use.
to me, stats are often fuzzy and whatever you choose to present to
the world.
Im sure there are some stat hounds on this list who can school us both.

Thanks, Cheryl, those are 2 good suggestions. Seems like there should
be a one-click solution--I'm lazy ;)

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Cheryl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

If you want the image of your video in a cool looking player, how
about loading it in that player (so it's playing) and taking a screen
shot the same way freevlog has you do it with the quicktime player.
Then you can crop the picture of your video playing in the player and
use it as your thumbnail. You could play it in Blip.tv's player or in
 the Wordpress.com player.

You could also use an image editor that supports layers to save a
picture of the player, and then plop your preferred video thumbnail
image on top so it looks like it's playing in the player. So you don't
have to screengrab and crop every time.

If you're uploading to blip...you can just grab their embed code for

[videoblogging] Interview Equipment Technique Suggestions

2007-05-14 Thread jimmyjay24
Long time lurker, first time poster. Terrific group.

I'm preparing to do interviews and I want to make sure I have a system
that works. I'll be both interviewer and neurotic cameraperson. I'm
using a Canon Optura 50 ($500 consumer model with both ext. mic and
headphone jacks). My first thought was to get a stereo-to-mono
Y-connector (one 3.5mm stereo male into two 3.5mm mono females). I'll
put a handheld or lav mic on the interviewee and a lav mic on myself
(has anyone ever turned their cold-shoe ext. shotgun mic around and
aimed it at their face? seems to work). In post-production I would
bump up the sound level on the weaker of the two channels.

I'm editing in iMovie. While it offers multiple audio tracks, it does
not appear to separate left and right channels within the same track.
I can export to garageband and it separates L and R channels. Then it
seems to be just a matter of balancing L and R channel volumes through
panning.

I've tested this, seems to work, but I don't feel like I have a lot of
audio control even with garageband (but I'm new to garageband). Have I
thought this through correctly? Suggestions?
