that's the game that's being played here. Get people to click on your
video, get people to click on your ads, get revenue to pay people's
salaries. There's nothing else going on here.

It's like when you make a Ning community. You can make it for free if
you leave the google ads on your site and lose the use of an entire
sidebar... or you can pay Ning to make it worth their while to ditch
the ads and let you use the sidebar. Lots of people choose to make
free Ning sites and lots of people choose to watch free boingboing
videos with whatever ads you saw on them.

I know you know this already and were just stating facts, :) and I
agree with you for the most part. The thing that SUCKS for me with
overlay ads is that you don't know when they're going to come up, so
as the content creator, when you go to font someone in THE LOWER 3RD
OF THE SCREEN, some bullshit ad comes up over your title and the
effect you were creating as art is completely lost. If that's the
only time you mention someone's name/title in the piece, people are in
 the dark the whole time.

Also, like you said, overlay ads of ANY kind destroy immersion, but
like I said, it's about making your money back, not making art that is
poignant and has the desired effect on the viewer that the artist
 (content creator) intended.

Removing ads would defeat the purpose of doing the videos in the first
place. (Again, having nothing specifically to do with boingboing)

Hello! Yes, I have the XactiHD1000 and yes, Quicktime does not support
the largest shooting format of the camera. A frustrating oversight by
Xacti. But, luckily, there is a back door fix you can do by using the CD
the camera came with. Here's a link to a thread that gives step by step
instructions. Note: The instructions confused me a bit and Ryanne Hodson
actually got through them and made the change for me so I'm now able to
see the large format video I shoot. Ryanne is planning on making a
tutorial on freevlog about this very issue so it will be made very clear
there soon. Here's the thread:

[videoblogging] Re: Cloverfield hand held major movie

2008-01-25 Thread mcmpress
I have read that the concept of the movie's TRT is that the entire
movie lasts 80 minutes, no longer than a tape would in the camera.

wrote:

I didn't see the movie, but based on the synopsis in the wiki, it
would have had to have been tape. That's the only way that they would
have had scenes from a previous recording.

Had it been disk-based or card-based, that would not have happened
because there's no recording over disk files. There's deleting disk
files so you have more space to record.

Also, files are recorded in sequential order, so if it were disk or
card-based, all of the old footage would have been first, and all of
the new footage would have been after it.

They refer to tape in the film, I think, because they use the device

with a disc based camera. That being said, some of it was shot with
the panasonic hvx200 but most was shot with the Sony CineAlta F23
which is not a consumer camera.

I didn't get the impression that we were supposed to believe it was
 a disc
based camera (either DVD or hard disk) . What came to my minds
eye was
something like an XACTI .. a very small, memory card based unit ..
 *very*
rugged compared to either real tape or DVD or hard disk. I think
 using the
term tape was more as a convenience. It's the most common term and
 does
  not need any further explanation.

If not a card based camcorder .. than a mini-DV unit would be my next
  choice.

camera and
while they refer to tape in the movie I would strongly suspect that
the
camera is a memory card based device, not a tape camera, and that they
(the
writers) intentionally had the characters use the most common term.

Frankly I was not impressed with the beginning of the movie and
actually
closed my eyes for the first half hour or so. I didn't want to watch
all
the shaky footage .. and was considering leaving the theatre .. but
when the
s**t hit the fan I started watching and they really did a credible
job.

There was some times where I couldn't believe that the character
operating
the camera would be 'filming' certain scenes .. and that he would turn
it on
and off .. or NOT turn it on or off .. at certain times .. but that's
where
 suspension of disbelief comes in.

 It's a decent monster movie .. I recommend it .. especially for
video

Introduced quietly just before Memorial Day weekend,
the regulations could severely impede the ability of even casual
photographers and filmmakers to operate in New York City. A group of two
or more people who want to use a
camera in a single public location for more than a
half hour (including setup and breakdown time) could be required to get
a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance. According to the NY

these regulations violate the First Amendment right

discriminatory enforcement.

Excerpted from an email by artist and filmmaker Jem
Cohen:

The Mayor's Office of Film deals primarily with big
film shoots (ie.

commercials, features, t.v.) where permits and
insurance are,

understandably, a given. However, many photographers
and filmmakers carry on

an equally vital tradition in which spontaneous
documentation of the urban

environment is at the very heart of our work. Being
a street photographer

often means standing in a random location and
waiting: for the right

activity, the right light, the break in the traffic;
the countless other

unpredictable factors that need to fall into place
to make a shot

worthwhile...

Permits would have to be obtained for specific dates
and times and exact

locations, and the insurance would be out of reach
for many individuals. The

fact is that we simply CANNOT predict where, when,
and how long we are going

to film or photograph; we CANNOT afford expensive
liability insurance

policies; we occasionally NEED to work with other
people or to use tripods

to support our gear. (The regulations would, for
example, effectively rule

out a great deal of time-lapse photography which
depends on tripods and

cannot possibly be done with time limitations of 10
to 30 minutes, as well

as the use of large format still cameras and long
lenses).

Especially in the current climate, official
clarification of photographer's

rights could be a positive thing. (Many of us have
been shut down by police

or other authorities who do not seem to understand
that we DO have rights to

film and photograph in public places). That said, if
these regulations go

through, it would invite if not require police to
harass or shut down both

professional artists and amateurs.

Unfortunately, I believe that we must see the
proposed regulations not only

as a blow against New York as a city that welcomes
and inspires art-making

(and historical documentation), but as part of a
continuum of broader

attacks against civil liberties and free expression.

We liked them very much, especially being in them. A very exciting and
surprisingly emotional experience.
That said

Next time, I think you tube viewers should choose the questions, the
candidate you tube type videos should be you tube type videos - a
candidate and a webcam, that's it. Speaking from their hearts. Pouring
their hearts out. Their videos were commercials. And not very creative

I hope there is no going back. That debates have this element of some

have to work on their answers.

Or, are the questions the answers? hm.

This was really advice to Short Story authors, but i think it also
applies to thos of us that are striving to create short form videos.

 From: http://matociquala.livejournal.com/1107367.html

Some writing advice by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. on the subject of short
 stories, from Bagombo Snuff Box:

 1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will
not feel the time was wasted.

 2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

 3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass
 of water.

 4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or
 advance the action.

 5. Start as close to the end as possible.

 6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading
characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the
reader may see what they are made of.

 7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love
to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

 8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as
possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete
understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could
finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few
pages.

[videoblogging] Jarvis Idol Critic Launch

2007-02-15 Thread mcmpress
We've just launched Idol Critic, http://www.idolcritic.com a weekly
video blog deconstructing one of America's most popular TV shows. This
is my first collaboration with a fellow blogger/vlogger : Jeff Jarvis
http://www.buzzmachine.com . It's interesting, vlogging about
television feels like moving forward and backwards at the same time.
Hard to describe.
