I don't know anything about boingboing, so I can't speak for them specifically, but that's the game that's being played here. You can make it for free if you leave the google ads on your site and lose the use of an entire sidebar... or you can pay Ning to make it worth their while to ditch the ads and let you use the sidebar. Lots of people choose to make free Ning sites and lots of people choose to watch free boingboing videos with whatever ads you saw on them. I know you know this already and were just stating facts, :) and I agree with you for the most part. The thing that SUCKS for me with overlay ads is that you don't know when they're going to come up, so as the content creator, when you go to font someone in THE LOWER 3RD OF THE SCREEN, some bullshit ad comes up over your title and the effect you were creating as art is completely lost. If that's the only time you mention someone's name/title in the piece, people are in the dark the whole time. Also, like you said, overlay ads of ANY kind destroy immersion, but like I said, it's about making your money back, not making art that is poignant and has the desired effect on the viewer that the artist (content creator) intended. Removing ads would defeat the purpose of doing the videos in the first place. Two videobloggers who documented those protest and guerrilla art installations evaded detention, and spoke to Boing Boing TV on Friday Beijing time about why they were there, what they witnessed, and why it mattered. Jay Dedman and Ryanne Hodson of Ryanishungry.com spoke to us over Skype from a hostel in Beijing. One of the actions they documented in photo and video was the hanging of an LED throwies light banner, below, which read FREE TIBET. Hello! Yes, I have the XactiHD1000 and yes, Quicktime does not support the largest shooting format of the camera. A frustrating oversight by Xacti. But, luckily, there is a back door fix you can do by using the CD the camera came with. Here's a link to a thread that gives step by step instructions. Note: The instructions confused me a bit and Ryanne Hodson actually got through them and made the change for me so I'm now able to see the large format video I shoot. Ryanne is planning on making a tutorial on freevlog about this very issue so it will be made very clear there soon. [videoblogging] Re: Cloverfield hand held major movie
I have read that the concept of the movie's TRT is that the entire movie lasts 80 minutes, no longer than a tape would in the camera. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Bill Cammack [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I didn't see the movie, but based on the synopsis in the wiki, it would have had to have been tape. That's the only way that they would have had scenes from a previous recording. Had it been disk-based or card-based, that would not have happened because there's no recording over disk files. There's deleting disk files so you have more space to record. Also, files are recorded in sequential order, so if it were disk or card-based, all of the old footage would have been first, and all of the new footage would have been after it. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Richard Amirault ramirault@ wrote: - Original Message - From: Michael Verdi They refer to tape in the film, I think, because they use the device of having taped over previously recorded video. That wouldn't happen with a disc based camera. That being said, some of it was shot with the panasonic hvx200 but most was shot with the Sony CineAlta F23 which is not a consumer camera. I didn't get the impression that we were supposed to believe it was a disc based camera (either DVD or hard disk) . What came to my minds eye was something like an XACTI .. a very small, memory card based unit .. *very* rugged compared to either real tape or DVD or hard disk. I think using the term tape was more as a convenience. It's the most common term and does not need any further explanation. I saw CLOVERFIELD and all I knew about it going in was that it was a monster movie. I had no idea that the entire movie would be from the point of view of a character with a hand held video camera. You never see the actual camera and while they refer to tape in the movie I would strongly suspect that the camera is a memory card based device, not a tape camera, and that they (the writers) intentionally had the characters use the most common term. Frankly I was not impressed with the beginning of the movie and actually closed my eyes for the first half hour or so. I didn't want to watch all the shaky footage .. and was considering leaving the theatre .. but when the s**t hit the fan I started watching and they really did a credible job. There was some times where I couldn't believe that the character operating the camera would be 'filming' certain scenes .. and that he would turn it on and off .. or NOT turn it on or off .. at certain times .. but that's where suspension of disbelief comes in. It's a decent monster movie .. I recommend it .. especially for video enthusiasts. [videoblogging] NYC Vloggers: IMPORTANT
Many of you have probably heard about this already but for those who haven't, please sign the petition (link below)or write to the Mayor's Office for Film and TV (address below) and forward it to any others who care about this important matter. PLEASE NOTE: All of a sudden we, as photographers, filmmakers, students and teachers, are facing serious restrictions by The Mayor's office about NYC street photography. Please sign the petition. We don't have much time with an august 3rd deadline. Here is the URL with the petition to sign: just click on this: http://www.pictureny.org/petition/index.php http://www.pictureny.org/petition/index.php Introduced quietly just before Memorial Day weekend, the regulations could severely impede the ability of even casual photographers and filmmakers to operate in New York City. A group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour (including setup and breakdown time) could be required to get a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance. According to the NY Civil Liberties Union, these regulations violate the First Amendment right to photograph in public places, and open the door to selective and discriminatory enforcement. However, many photographers and filmmakers carry on an equally vital tradition in which spontaneous documentation of the urban environment is at the very heart of our work. Being a street photographer often means standing in a random location and waiting: for the right activity, the right light, the break in the traffic; the countless other unpredictable factors that need to fall into place to make a shot worthwhile... Permits would have to be obtained for specific dates and times and exact locations, and the insurance would be out of reach for many individuals. The fact is that we simply CANNOT predict where, when, and how long we are going to film or photograph; we CANNOT afford expensive liability insurance policies; we occasionally NEED to work with other people or to use tripods to support our gear. (The regulations would, for example, effectively rule out a great deal of time-lapse photography which depends on tripods and cannot possibly be done with time limitations of 10 to 30 minutes, as well as the use of large format still cameras and long lenses). Especially in the current climate, official clarification of photographer's rights could be a positive thing. (Many of us have been shut down by police or other authorities who do not seem to understand that we DO have rights to film and photograph in public places). That said, if these regulations go through, it would invite if not require police to harass or shut down both professional artists and amateurs. Unfortunately, I believe that we must see the proposed regulations not only as a blow against New York as a city that welcomes and inspires art-making (and historical documentation), but as part of a continuum of broader attacks against civil liberties and free expression. We liked them very much, especially being in them. A very exciting and surprisingly emotional experience. Speaking from their hearts. Pouring their hearts out. Their videos were commercials. And not very creative at that. I hope there is no going back. That debates have this element of some kind from here on out. Now that we've got the questions, they certainly have to work on their answers. It may be different people asking the questions, but politicians are still going to use their training to answer the questions in the way they want, encompassing their talking points and well-practices political stances on the issues raised, or even unrelated issues. But its a start. Here in the UK we have a TV program called Question Time, where the comments and questions from the audience are often a lot more interesting than what the panel says. The ability to create a new version of public meetings, using the internet, is certainly of interest. This CNN thing wasnt that, but it was some sort of step in the right direction I guess. A big challenge will be to change the pace of these things, theres only so much reality you can get out of short soundbites and quickly moving on to the next question, I remain fascinated by whether peoples concentration spans have been really been reduced over the decades or whether there is a real appetite for longer and deeper discussions. Cheers Steve Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Gena compumavengal@ wrote: I didn't get a chance to see it, I don't have cable but one of the things I thought odd was that CNN got to choose/filter the videos before airing. If CNN is footing the bill and you want to set a certain tone for the type of questions that you get it might be reasonable to have this filter. But it is still a filter/control from an established media company. It is still directed from up high and a select few are allowed to ask questions. On the one hand there is a M$M disrespect of user generated content unless and until it can be used as a marketing tool or as a way to look cool. Next you lock down the contributions from one web video host and then you further filter who can access by having it on cable, if your provider carries CNN, CSPAN or CSPAN2.
