[videoblogging] Re: VLog Directory, Topsite, and Forum

2005-08-06 Thread troylemaire

Raymond,

Thanks for the feedback and I realized the sarcastic part was kind
of my doom on this list. But, I also realize that anything that is
done on parts of the internet are considered spam at first when they
are blindsided like my post was. I should have done that better.

For everyone to know, I am a lurker, I watched the forum for my
first shopping cart for 18 months before I actually purchased it.

Raymond, even though your screencast slammed me, it did allow me to
get an honest opinion of what priorities I need to change. I had
emailed friends and a coworker and they critiqued me about the
layout, so in a way I got what I asked for, in one part.

I will work on the adding of the code as one of my priorities.
Hopefully, people will join.

Thanks,
Troy

 Hey Troy, all

I have to respond to this, even though we have moved on. I hope you
 are still reading this, Troy.

Firstly, my screencast was pretty sarcastic, but it doesn't mean
that
I have totally written off your site or that there is ill will as
such. I have no intention to be just some sarcastic, arrogant
prick. I
would like anyone who have any ideas or comments to come forth.
Nobody
of us owns videoblogging, and just because you were not a regular
contributor on this list, it doesn't mean that you should be
treated
as a used car salesman when you do make your first pitch. However,
for
all you people out there: Think about How you do your pitch. The
way
you do it can have a big effect on how we as a collective receive
it,
and ultimately how many test users your project will receive.

Now, my take on what happened here.

When you wrote your e-mail, I read it, like I read every message
from
a new voice on this list. I quickly checked out the site, decided
that
this was pretty immature and not ready for prime time, and I
wondered
just how many attempts of the definitive directory we are going to
get. I found the numerous link to that same business website to
make
the whole directory seem like a spam, one big advertisement for
your
other site. I decided at that point to not comment your e-mail to
the
group and just write it off as yet another attempt of a directory.
It
didn't stand out much in my opinion.

Then Jan gave her reply, which I could definitely understand, but
which also came off as a bit off. Asking newcomers who are you?
isn't my method, whatever their actions. (OK, Obvious spammers need
some flak) So I tried to do a middle thing, still expressing my
puzzle
with the site, yet adding something to the discussion. I was pretty
surprised over the fact that I had to add code to my own site to be
listed; that part in itself makes it very hard for me to vouch for
your directory. There must be some other way around that problem.
Adding codes on our site to be listed somewhere, heck, it is even
hard
for Technorati to get us to do that sometimes.

I suggest you build on that small blog in connection with the
building
of your directory, make sure you have an RSS feed, and then you can
notify this list with that RSS feed. Then those of us who want to
can
 get updated on your work.

I will make a new visit to your site when it has matured, and then
I
can give a new screencast to counter my earlier sarcastic one :P

Oh, and a message for all who are busy preparing coool shit for the
vlogosphere to use, please note that if you want the full effect of
the involvement in the vlogosphere, you should become a part of the
vlogosphere somehow. You don't have to vlog much at all, but be a
part
of the conversation. That way your pitching email or short
involvement
with us wont just get forgotten as we move on to the thousands of
emails from our over thousand members.

If there is something I do NOT want, it is to come across as
arrogant
towards newcomers or people that have been lurking untill now. I
know
I send off loads of BS to this list, but nobody has stopped me
yet. :)

Good luck building that site, Troy! Now, feel free to enter the
discussions as you like. You definitely got our attention now, even
though I guess it was in a less preferred way ;)

 Best,

 Raymond M. Kristiansen

2005-08-06 Thread troylemaire

Test 3, hmmm

I will have to think about this one some more, but here are my first
thoughts. My first thought is I can see things 3-12 months down the
road, I am not an visionary, I am an idea man. So as you said, I
recognized the fact in the group that there is a virtual fence that
everyone is on, in regards to the maturity of Vlogging. I have a
MBA, so one thing that I learned is that every successful business
has to mature, grow, expand, or die. The difference between
business and VLogging is the pure potential of VLogging. A mom and
pop has the luxury of being able to limit their growth, based on
their comfort scale and ability to put forth their maximum effort.

VLogging does not have this luxury, like other technologies, ideas,
revolutions, over the past few years and decades. VLogging has a
potential to grow exponentially very quickly and this is what is
going to create the growing pain in th community.

I think there will be a battle between purist and visionaries, much
like there is a battle between old schoolers and corporate staff,
when a mom and pop gets bought out by Acme Corporation. Mom and Pop
realize that their is a valid reason to sell to Acme, because they
did not do it for just the reason of money. Most of the time it is
because they need to grow and they understand that for whatever
reason they cannot get the business where it needs to be.

So the purist, you know the one, he sits in the breakroom
complaining all day of how thing are constantly changing and his job
is now different(not harder, just different). Never realizing that
if mom and pop didn't sell, then they were not going to be able to
maintian their growth and the business eventually would end up
closing down.

This is my first input on the 3rd test, so sorry if I am rambling,
Troy

read the list
rather than just leaving your request for help populating your

And the second test, you replied to our skepticism / cynicism with
humor.

The third test: what you do for the community before the community
bends
over backwards for you. I whistle background music by request. Can
you
whistle? Seriously, what skills/knowledge do you have that might
be of
benefit to us? Are you a skilled businessman? We could learn
something about
business from you. Maybe you could think of ways to generate
income from
extant directories that folks here have worked their bums off to
create.

I'm sorry, dude, but you arrived at a moment when all of us are
hyperaware
that folks like you will be coming out of the woodwork in droves,
enter our
community and spam us. It doesn't matter how you presented
your offer -
the timing was bad for it arrived in the midst of a discussion
about how
the days of innocence in the vlogosphere are over.

Subject: [videoblogging] What I have to offer

After reading Jan's and Raymond's evocative posts, I guess it's
time for
me to step forward, introduce myself, and let you know what I
have to
offer. I've been a member for about a week; not long in lurker
terms,
but as a veteran of cyberspace, I know it's prudent to observe
before
  jumping in.

By profession I am a writer, communications consultant, and
educator. I
am on the faculty at Canada's largest college, but I'm not an
academic.
I've spent most of my life in the business world. I have been
involved
in various forms of communication technology for many years. My
focus is
content and computer-mediated communication, not the hardware to
make it
happen, just to make that distinction.

I have varied interests, and while they seem to run off in all
directions, there's a kind of weird convergence in the realm of
communication. Sometimes what I'm communicating is completely
nuts, but
I think that's still valid. If there's one thing I am certain
of, it is
that the world needs more joy, more silliness, and more
laughter. I try
  to do my part.

My vlog is new. I'm still working out the kinks technology-wise
but I
know where it is going to go. I've been working with some
limitations,
but those will get overcome in time. I think it will end up as
something
uniquely Beth, which of course is the goal of a good vlog.

As to what else I have to offer, I will gladly review anything
you'd
like feedback on, and give you my considered and constructive
comments.
I'm also a coach and business consultant, so those skills are
freely
available to anyone who'd like to get help on anything. A Google
search
or a perusal of my exhausitive CV on my college page will tell
you
anything else you want to know.

I'm looking forward to being a contributor to this group!

  Cheers,

this post, but why is there not a Yahoo Category for VLogging? Is it
because there is such a thin line in some peoples eyes between Blog

Thanks,

2005-08-05 Thread troylemaire

Hi, My name is Troy LeMaire and I have created a site that will serve
as a directory, topsite, forum and general portal for VLogging at
http://www.VLogList.com Currently the site is in Beta as I don't have
all of the pages functioning, but I am looking to add sites to the
directory and toplist which are both working. There is a banner for my
other site, that is commercial, but I am looking to test some banners
out, so email me if you are interested in some beta testing of banners.

The forum is working and I am looking for more topics to add as well as
moderators that might be interested.

I would appreciate any reviews/critiques that anyone could provide to
help me out.

Thanks in Advance,
