RE: [videoblogging] Digest Number 1444

2005-12-11 Thread Carl Weaver
Josh, I think you are right, but this is a great example of Verdi's point
that a lot of people don't get it. It's like trying to convince my students
that they should learn because it expands their knowledge base and gives
them richer lives. If they don't get it, I can't convince them of this. The
ones who get it don't need convincing.

Some people will just never get the concept of doing this (or anything) for
a purpose other than money. I have gotten lots of questions from people
about why I don't charge others to vlog. I suppose I could, but truth be
told, my video skills are lacking to the point that I would either make a
substandard product or else I would spend way too much time making a good
product and then resent not getting enough money for it. Plus, doing it for
money would take away the fun. It just doesn't feel right.

All this reminds me of a story of the Buddha. He was trying to tell people
about enlightenment and they didn't get it. So you never come back and live
again? All of life is over? they asked. Why should we strive for that?
The Buddha concluded that trying to talk of such things is like a frog
trying to explain maturity to tadpoles. You don't live in the water all the
time and eat swimming bugs? It has to be experienced to be appreciated.
Sometimes the path you take isn't clear until you reach the endpoint.

All the comments of banality and boring vs. interesting vlogs is really
meaningless. Sure, some are more entertaining than others, but the beauty is
in getting a glimpse into who someone is instead of what they do, which is
the world many of us live in all day long. People ask what you do and not
who you are. Sometimes I lie just to screw with people because I hate the
question. Seeing who someone is through their everyday life is fascinating.
Seeing Ryanne's Thanksgiving Jell-o shots or Verdi's wishbone-hating father
or your cat videos is the type of thing that makes my day. That beats the
hell out of Friends or any other mind-numbing nonsense on TV. I think
there really is commercial value in vlogs, but I'd be hard pressed to
convince anyone of that. I'd watch them instead of TV almost any time South
Park isn't on or Animal House isn't showing.

Just my two cents. Keep your chin up, Josh. The people who get it are your
real audience. The ones who don't get it are the ones who can't be
convinced. And I don't mean that as a value judgment. There sure is a lot in
the world I don't get...

Cheers,
Carl

Josh Leo's Vlog is really well done and entertaining Josh Leo is a very

Instead, I get lumped with all the college kids who make videos of their

My friends don't get it either. They think I'm just filming to embarass
them. But that's not the point. I want to document what's happening now
because its the normal and mundane that I want to remember. Sure it's
not that interesting, a bunch of my friend messing around or just
stopping to remember that I'm living in one of the most interesting
cities in the world that most will never get to experience (Sydney of
course :) ).
In the end, all I want to do is to be able to show my loved ones (and
strangers) who live far away from me my life. Can't make everybody
happy, just concentrate on yourself.
