Re: [videoblogging] How to capture Windows Media Player video screenshot

2006-04-19 Thread Stephanie Bryant

Heh-- thanks, Michael. That works well!

Off-topic tangent: Until January of this year, I worked for a
semiconductor metrology company. We made machines that measure chips on
the submicron level. I wrote the software manuals, and had to take
screen shots. Unfortunately, whatever the camera showed would not
appear in the screen shot, because the video camera went straight to
the monitor instead of going through the computer. Our team eventually
wrote a program to capture the camera image, but I'd have to take the
camera image and copy/paste it into the interface screen shots when I
went to press.

Totally not related to this issue, but I think when I saw that
happening in WMP, I assumed it was a similar problem of video-output
and video-capture not being able to play nice together.

Hello Harold,This reminds me of when I used to write OpenGL programs.  If it's anything like that, then the problem is that Windows Media Player isn't putting it's "images" in same place -- the same area of memory -- that most Windows programs do.
And, unfortunately, when you try to take a screenshot (using the "print screen" button or the GIMP), Windows won't get anything there. When I was writing those OpenGL programs, I actually had to make the program create it's own screenshots.  (So, my guess is that since I don't think Windows Media Player will give you screenshots.  That you won't be able to do it with it.)
You probably need a media player that creates it's own screenshots.  (BTW, if you're on Linux, I'm pretty sure you could do it with GStreamer using some easy shell commands... well, that's assuming you like using the shell.)

What do you use to capture an image of your video so that you may display it on your blog or website?  I'm interested in learning your solutions to this...I'm adding video to my ongoing narrative at "Something That Happened" and I'd like to experiment with various ways of displaying images of my videos.

Thanks for your feedback,

yeah this is thanks to how windows media player works ... something about it displaying directly to the hardware ... I dunnoThe bottom line (I think) is that WMP isn't gonna cut it.  The most reliable way I've found is to open the video in Windows Movie Maker and useing the lil button to take a screenshot of the movie.

Harold,

Did you try Gimp's Capture->From Screen option (File menu)?
