[videoblogging] Progressive vs Interlace Cameras for the Web

2007-12-06 Thread Stan Hirson, Sarah Jones
I have a video blog of videos of horses often in fast action. I am
considering a move to HD. I would continue to put my web videos on SD
because I insist on a birate no greater than 512 kbs in Flash for my
visitors and would lay the HD originals off for future purposes.

I see that there are a few camcorders in the consumer/prosumer range
that offer 1080i from Sony and Canon. The only progressive HD I saw
in a low price range was a Sanyo Xacti HD7000.

My questions are:

For action filming, wouldn't 720 progressive scan, even at its lower
resolution, be sharper than the 1080 interlace?

In general, wouldn't 720 progressive have a better look on the web in
the first place? Now, when I compress my DV I deinterlace anyway. Am
I getting a true progressive image?

Any ideas?

Yes, 720p is much better for action filming if you are truly getting 60
progressive frames per second.

If you're de-interlacing your video, you are converting fields to frames,
effectively combing the top and bottom fields to a single frame.
