Thanks Michael - that was a very helpful post. I think that I will use
WordPress.

I use and recomend Wordpress. There is free Wordpress hosting at
Wordpress.com (similar to setting up a blogger account) and Dreamhost
(a paid hosting service) has an easy one click install of wordpress
that you can use.

Oh - now I get it! Duh!

I can host my videos elsewhere to conserve bandwidth. BUT I can embed
the videos on my personally own/hosted vlog. Correct?

Ok, now that I finally get it, which hosting do you guys think is the
best option? I don't mind paying a fee IF it means getting
better/faster/more reliable hosting of my videos, otherwise I would
want to go the free route.

[videoblogging] Re: Newbie - Got Lots of Questions - Can you Help?

2006-03-08 Thread Susan
Here here to the dump Pinnacle chant. I have had so many problems
with it.

For something inexpensive and easy to use, I suggest Roxio, as I
always do. For unusual reasons which I can explain if you're really
interested, I suggest Roxio 7 over Roxio 8... but 8 has its benefits
as well.

My own 2c... and yes, lean heavily on freevlog.org for RSS info.

I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Dont use Pinnacle. Use anything but. Use Windows Movie Maker if you
dont want to spend any money. Just dont use Pinnacle. Adobe Premiere
Elements 2.0 is probably the best low budget editor out there. I just
recently bought Premiere Pro 2.0 and I still thing P.E. 2 is an
 excellent choice.

The fact that the guy was clueless at vlogit should be enough not to
 purchase it.

 My 2 cents.

Today I stumbled across vlogdir.com by Michael Sullivan. It's a very
cool site, and let me to this vlog group.

I'm trying to determine which tools I want to use to edit and
broadcast my vlogs, but am feeling a bit overwhelmed. Any
advice/input that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Currently I have two vlog projects:

  1. client wants to broadcast weekly art lessons on his website
  2. I want to create monthly or biweekly marcom vlogs. Basically I
will discuss the kinds of things discussed in DivaDigest
(www.readdivadigest.com), however each vlgo will only focus on one
article. For example, my first vlog will be a little skit-like
production that illustrates the meaning of branding. It will be
published to a portion of the Diva site.

I've been looking at the following software:
  1. To actually publish the vlog online via streaming video, Ive been
thinking about using this FlashPlayer by Jeroen W.
  http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player

Or, I've also looked at this softwared to publish streaming video
  vlog online:
  http://www.msiwebvideo.com/

  2. To edit the videos I have been looing at Pinnacle studio 10, studio
10 plus, or studio media suite. http://www.pinnaclesys.com. I already
own adobe photoshop and fireworks, so Im not sure if the added
features in media suite are really any use to me.

  OR
I've been looking at www.vlogiit.com. This software is being touted
all over the net. It looks pretty cool and seems like it can make it
quick and easy to both edit and publish my video. However, Ive heard
from one source that their support is not too hot. Today I called
support to ask a few questions and the guy was totally clueless - I
knew more about the product than he did! So, that kind of scared me.
Still, it's inexpensive, and looks quick and easy to use.

And, finally, I want to be able to put these into an RSS feed, and I'm
TOTALLY clueless!!! Where can I find a tutorial that spells this out
for a newbie to RSS vlogging?

I want my vlog to contain video that is easy for others to view, that
has an RSS feed so that viewers can easily access new content, and
that has video that is fun and has some pizazz - don't just want to be
a talking head. I own a marcom company, so we like to do the 'bells
  and whistles' on stuff.

I noticed that most vloggers broadcast with quicktime. Why is that? I
thought that flash was better for streaming video?

Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

[videoblogging] Re: Newbie - Got Lots of Questions - Can you Help?

2006-03-08 Thread Susan
Honestly, the free route is pretty reliable right now. And since
we're now talking about both hosting and blogging if you will, I'd
suggest:

http://www.blip.tv

They will host your videos for free--and (though I know this isn't the
case) if you weren't concerned about the appearance of the vlog, blip
actually has its own blog-post software built right into it.

http://www.ourmedia.org

This second site is a front-end (Michael can describe this better) for
the Internet Archive. It doesn't have the same blog-style as blip
does, and I have found it to not be as reliable... I started with
ourmedia, and switched to blip a month or so later.

2006-03-08 Thread gottadiva
Thanks Michael. I've built the wordpress template for my blog at
www.vlogdiva.com. It's still totally bare bones.

Later today I'm going to try using this software
http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player

It has a wordpress plugin so I think that it can work with the
wordpress RSS feeds.

Once I get that figured out I'm going to also look at creating
quicktime versions of my blogs.

The one thing I'm still stumped on is which editing software to use.
There have been a few suggestions, but I don't understand why folks
are so down on Pinnacle. Can you tell me why it is such a bad solution?

Also, is Adobe Premiere easy yet powerful? I want to be able to edit
the movies with sound, jpgs, cutting, etc., but I prefer to use a
software for dummies. Then once I get really into it I'll upgrade to a
more advanced software.

Your thoughts?

Go check out the Pinnacle forums for all the problems people have had
and are having. I'm telling you it's bad based on my own personal
experience with the software.

There are numerous easy to use NLE's out there that will do that
job. In the end, it will be up to you what you are comfortable using.
I've found that Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 is very powerful yet
simple enough for the beginner. Remember though, there is a difference
between Adobe Premiere and Adobe Premiere Elements.

If you dont want to purchase anything at this time, you can just use
Windows Movie Maker until you are more comfortable with editing.

If you are going to be creating Quicktime movies, I would suggest
spending the $30 and purchasing Quicktime Pro for encoding your final
videos.
