Oh Canada!

I have to selfishly back this suggestion. We're sort of culturally (sadly,
not geographically) halfway between the US and Europe. Except Calgary, where
I live. It's like a cowboy theme park.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Proposal/VloggerCon Midwest

2006-11-24 Thread Deirdre Straughan
Money spinner? LOL. We had a donation of $2000 from Node 101, which paid for
an apartment in Milan to sleep six people for a week (1500 euros) - except
they didn't sleep much, what with the high-speed internet access (60 euros)
and all-night conversations (no charge).

Another variable number (2-6, depending on the night) slept in my family
room in Lecco (and ate some meals with my family), and a few more paid for
their own hotels in Milan.

12 people paid 20 euros each for a registration fee, which we later withdrew
when it was determined that this was deterring registrations by, e.g.,
Italian students. Those people all generously agreed to donate that amount
to the kitty, which helped to cover transport and other incidentals.

The venue (http://www.ied.it/Ied/ita/citta/milano.html) was organized by
Bruno Pellegrini and his crew at http://www.theblogtv.it/ with (a lot of!)
logistical and marketing support from http://www.digitalmagics.com/ and
http://www.ilcannocchiale.it/

We had a much-appreciated donation of 250 euros for wine at our final
dinner. When all the accounting is finished (that is, when I recover enough
to feel sure I haven't forgotten anything), we'll know exactly how much is
left over to donate to next year's event, which Joel has masochistically
volunteered to organize in Heidelberg. Full accounting will be rendered to
our donors.

What did I get out of it? One nice dinner for myself, my husband, and my
daughter. A lot of fascinating new friends. A bottle of genuine Port from
Portugal. Some lovely video shot from my balcony, and a personal interview
by the one and only Madge. Lesbian bath goodies from the Body Shop. A great
time (outside the bath). Many last-minute scrambles to deal with things like
a transport strike, a late-night train that turned out to be a very slow
bus, and almost everyone's sudden changes of plan (40 euros' worth of
cellphone charges in five days on my phone alone! - I shudder to think of
Andreas' roaming charges). Two lovely candle holders from Denmark. Much hard
work. Plenty of fun.

'Nuff said.

Join us in Heidelberg next year for beer and bratwurst!

Videoblogging is whats new has the potential to change things. But
awards shows, conferences mailing lists are subject to the usual
problems, whatever the topic is. The fact the conference is about
Videoblogging does not negate factors such as location, transport
  costs, human egos etc.

For me it boils down to what vloggercon is actually trying to be. If
its supposed to be an international conference, then it has to take
that into account - international conferences by their very nature
need to consider how easy it is for people to travel there. If it isnt
an internatinal conference then thats no longer a primary concern.

I think it is a red herring to go on about Europe, this is not a
European issue per se, if Europe vanished into the sea then the
argument would just shift to eing amoungst Americans. See past
discussions about the 'New York as the centre of the universe' for
  example of that.

And if it does seem like a 'USA vs Europe' thing at times, then thats
an example of an ven wider problem, language. This stuff is all so
English, who even knows whats going on with vlogging in non-English
speakig countries unless you happen to speak their language. I hear
that Spanish is a big language in the USA, are spanish-speakers
represented at vloggercons and award shows?
