I could on and on ad nauseum too on how Audacity reduces such things as 
hiss, hum and other anomalies, but I won't.

True BUT....

Emphasis on the words GAWD AWFUL here!!  It can also leave them sound 
like they've got sand in their mouths too.

I don't even do that.  In fact, I don't even use Audacity AT ALL.  I use 
either Cool Edit Pro 2002 (The predecessor to Adobe Audition) or 
GoldWave.  GoldWave may be a little slower, but it does a better job.
