I've built one. It works. Not as good as a $500 (or more) unit ..but better 
than nothing. As a matter of fact my first test was so good I posted the 
video on YouTube.  It's below .. in my sig.

I'll respectfully disagree and say that using nothing is better. I built one
back in 2004 when that page first surfaced online. If you really need to
split the difference between steadycam and nothing this one is far better:
