Who knowsŠI stopped paying attention when I heard that the Blu-Ray versions
are altered even more than the ³special edition² (post-1997) releases, and
don¹t include the original theatrical release versions.
There are plenty of secondhand DVD copies available on Amazon Marketplace.

If your VHS tapes are the originals (pre-1997), hang onto them.
And let us pray that Lucas does not alter them further.

Jared -
Sorry to hear that your admin is dictating this move without giving you time to
plan.
Take a deep breath.
Open stacks are not the enemy, and can be a great thing for visibility & usage
of the collection.
Sounds like they're still going to be within sight of the library staff? That's
good.
But you do need some form of security. As others have mentioned, you can go
with locked & tattletaped cases for the DVDs or a split where you have open
browsing but keep discs in sleeves behind the counter.
Don't worry too much about the VHS tapes. If they're titles still being used,
they're going to be on reserve and/or booked right? Focus on tattletaping those
tapes rather than the VHS collection as a whole.
Ask for money for cases and for "shrinkage" money. Remind them that the
average cost of all those educational films is about $250 each. (In reality,
theft tends to be the cheap popular films, which is irritating but not as
expensive.)
Oh, let them know that your patrons aren't really liking browsing by accession
numbers, so you'd like to talk to cataloging about having them classed by call
numbers.

On year 8 of successful implementation of open video stacks & of using
increased circulation stats to justify increased budget,

Sadly, I've previously spotted many of these "books" for sale on Amazon.
There's a generic publisher name, no indication that they've merely printed
pages from the internet.
You have to be paying attention to notice that it's a 7 page publication...

The collection title is listed as SIX FEET OF COUNTRY, but CITY LOVERS &

According to the various OCLC records there are really only about 20 libraries

[Videolib] Six Feet of the Country

2012-01-11 Thread Sayre, J. Richard
Anyone know where we might find a VHS or DVD version of SIX FEET OF THE COUNTRY
(1982)? It's a 30-minute film adaptation of Nadine Gordimer's book by the
same title. I'm having a very difficult time finding it available in any form
for purchase with the exception of a "free" (for paid subscribers) download
from the following site:

Re: [Videolib] Rock It

2012-01-11 Thread Danielle Reay
One of my favorites is the musical Heißer Sommer. It's like the DDR's
solution to Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. There's a line in one of the
songs that translates to something like, "We're a collective not a gang!"
Definitely not as heavy as Fassbinder.

Eileen! I don't know about the Marzuk film, but I can assure you that they are
many German films out there that
are not as "heavy" as Der weisse Band or a Fassbinder film.

Here is the link to a LibGuide I prepared highlighting the many German (and
Dutch!) language feature
films that we have here at USC:

Dear CW,

Does anyone know if Mike Marzuk's Rock It (2010) will be released on DVD in

been released on DVD in Germany (Region 2). The film appears to the German
version of High School Musical. Our German professor is trying to find German
films to show his students that are not as serious as a Fassbinder film. They
would like more films like In July or Soul Kitchen than Run Lola Run or The
White Band.

[Videolib] Star Wars: the Complete Saga on DVD

2012-01-11 Thread Chris McNevins
Hello All,

We're doing the VHS-->DVD upgrade bit and I've had a request to replace
our VHS version of Star Wars Trilogy. I would like to get the "Complete
Saga" but it was only released on Blu-Ray in September and now there are
rumblings that it will be released in 3d sometime this year. Does
anyone have any idea if "the Complete Saga" will ever get release in
good old-fashioned "DVD??"

Thanks!

Chris

Hard to imagine someone so cheap or stupid that they can't print it
themselves or ask Kinko's to do it.
However IF the first line and front cover said something like " A
compilation of Wikipedia entries that likely contain mistakes on the
life and work
of Lillian Gish than fine. It is beyond my comprehension why anyone
would want something with disclaimers that it probably is not
entirely accurate and has not been vetted. As one who had to correct a
Wikipedia factual mistake half a dozen times ( about Greg Maddux of
course)
until it stuck I can attest that one would never want to rely on them.

I don't think there's anything wrong with printing out and collating
a Wikipedia entry if it's clearly indicated on the cover that the
content of the book is what is available online for free. Some people
may want to have the information in a hard copy format without having
to print it out themselves. But, the provenance does appear a little
too hidden in this case. The back cover claims that a portion of the
sales of each book will be donated to the Wikimedia Foundation, for
all that's worth.

Someone should be the first to review it on Amazon, go on Jessica, do it!
