[Videolib] Delivery of digital video

2012-05-21 Thread Peterson, Erika Day - petersed
Good morning, everyone.

I'm interested in how you are delivering your in-house digital video content.
How is the content searchable? Do you have high and low bandwidth versions?

For our part, we're delivering video through MDID in high and low bandwidth
versions. Videos are searchable through the library's catalog where there is a
link directing them to MDID. They authenticate through single sign-on.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.

[Videolib] PBS streaming video

2012-05-21 Thread Moshiri, Farhad
Do you have a subscription with PBS streaming video? How much it costs? What is
the contact information? I see a lot of recent programs free online. But all of
them say for personal use in their terms of use. I have noticed too that these
free online programs are all new episodes. How can I get subscription for all
PBS documentaries old and new? I'm mostly interested in American Experience
(especially, Eyes on the Prize), Frontline, etc. Thanks.

I don't being PBS offers a subscription model for their titles. Many of the
PBS titles you mention are available as streaming video from either Alexander
Street Press or Films Media Group.

Neither company offers the entire run of PBS programming. Both companies have
multiple pricing models, including individual selection.

I don't believe Eyes on the Prize is or ever will be legally available in
streaming

Many PBS titles are available on the OverDrive platform as a MAX access
subscription service including many Frontline and American Experience titles.
Eyes on the Prize however is not among these.

I think we all know that the music footage rights issues with EYES will
make it virtually impossible to ever be legally streamed.

Re: [Videolib] PBS streaming video

2012-05-21 Thread John Kahler
CollegeAnywhere.org, a consortium out of the Philadelphia region, offers a
library of over 400 PBS titles, selected out of the larger catalog, for
licensing using our collection of streaming tools and resources. I did look at
the list and Eyes on the Prize is not one of the titles from American
Experience available - producers ultimately determine what programs in the
series are licensed for streaming, and we select from the available list based
on the needs of our consortium institutions. There are a good number of
American Experience and Frontline titles that are part of the PS collection.
Please feel free to contact me at the information below.

You are correct about PBS terms of usage, the streams are not for use in
academic environments. This is the case with other producers as well. As
important, PBS rotates programs on and off their website, so a program
available there today may not be available when it is needed. Hence the
valuable of using content from licensed sources beyond meeting the terms of use.
