[Videolib] Thanks and Good-bye

2015-02-10 Thread Michael Vollmar-Grone
Wanted to extend my thanks for the years of helpful advice from this
group and
a special clack of the slateboard to Gary, wherever-you-may-be, and Randy.
This listserv and Video Librarian, along with Roger Ebert's reviews,
were fundamental in my career.
And Jim Scholtz, if you are still out there, thanks for launching me in
this great profession.
Your book sits next to Gary's on my bookshelf to this day.

I will be retiring at the end of February.
What a long strange trip it's been.
Happy trails.
Mike

Re: [Videolib] pornographic films in the Library collection?

2014-11-18 Thread Michael Vollmar-Grone
Way back 15 years ago, I was finishing my MLS with a culminating project
looking at the video purchasing patterns of Ohio public librarians
related to the MPAA ratings.
Basically, I found that while R rated films was the largest group of
videos being released, PG and PG-13 were evidenced in far greater
numbers in library collections.

X and NC-17 were virtually non-existent.
The more things that change

Re: [Videolib] Recommendations on DVD scratch/repair machine or system

2013-03-13 Thread Michael Vollmar-Grone
We've used RTI products for decades; first the TapeChek for videotapes,
currently the EcoSmart for discs.
They do a great job!

But we added a VMI Disc Buffer last year. Fantastic results without
removing a layer of the disc.
Quick and easy 30-60 second process, depending on degree of scratching.
The number of complaints concerning discs not playing has dropped
dramatically.

However we still need use the RTI for about 10 percent of reported problems.

If I could have only one machine, it would be the VMI.

Best wishes,
Mike

Library Friends,

I need some recommendations on good (moderately priced) DVD scratch repair
machines/systems. Or can anyone point me to a site that does good objective
reviews of such? I can only find company sites (no objectivity there).
What are you folks using?

Please feel free to respond kindly to me off list. Thanks.

Jared

Re: [Videolib] Any experience with DreamPak DVD Security Cases?

2012-11-27 Thread Michael Vollmar-Grone
We use One Time security cases but occasionally run into the cases not
opening despite the clicks because soda or something similarly sticky
was spilled into the channel in which the locking bar slides.

Hello all,

We have been using DreamPak DVD cases for our publicly circulating DVDs for
about a year now. We are experiencing an 8-10% error rate with the DreamPak
cases not opening. Sometimes the DVD box is stuck inside-I'll give them this,
they are very difficult to break into! We also now test each new box of cases
when they come in to find any defective cases.

The little magnet/slider clicks, but it doesn't move. Magnets don't get old,
do they? I have reported the problem to the vendor and they don't have any idea
what could be amiss. Nor is it likely they would, since they are not the
manufacturer. They have, however, been good about issuing a credit or a
replacement. Still, before we invest more in this product I would like to know:

1. Has anyone else experienced similar trouble with DreamPak DVD security
cases? If yes, were you able to resolve?

2. What products do you use to secure publicly circulating DVDs?

Thank you for your assistance.
