This position will oversee preservation related activities for a broad range of audiovisual formats within the UNT Libraries' collections. This position reports to the Head, Media Library but will work closely with other departments and librarians involved in audiovisual collection areas and digital services. SPECIFIC POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES * Performs inspection, repair, digitization and access activities for select audiovisual materials in the UNT Libraries' collections. * Responsible for developing and implementing a collection survey of the audiovisual materials within the Libraries. Makes recommendations for preservation priorities and works with departments to help implement these recommendations. * Oversees select public services related to audiovisual materials including format transfer services and licensing/permissions management. * Assists with the identification, acquisition and management of new, unique audiovisual collections. * Assists with identifying, applying for and managing grants related to audiovisual preservation. * Stays up to date on copyright issues affecting audiovisual materials. * Assists with the creation of online exhibits. * Oversees the use, inventory and maintenance of audiovisual equipment in the Media Library's collection. * Performs public service activities within the Media Library, such as reference services and programming assistance. * Serves on library and university committees as needed. * Contributes to developments in the field through active professional service and scholarship. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Education: Completion of an advanced degree in library/ information sciences (from an ALA accreditation institution) or an advanced degree in moving image archives or a related discipline. * A total of six months combined relevant experience working in audiovisual preservation. Student, volunteer, staff or professional experience may be included to meet this requirement. * Demonstrates knowledge of common standards and practices for the handling, processing and preservation for multiple audiovisual formats. * Experience with technologies used in basic audiovisual digitization. * Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. * Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive working relationships within the Libraries' and with external partners. * Willingness to acquire new skills in a rapidly changing environment * Ability to lift 40 lbs PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience working with a wide variety of audiovisual mediums including film, tape and digital formats. * Demonstrates knowledge of copyright and/or licensing issues relevant to audiovisual collections. * Familiarly with audiovisual collection survey methods and tools. * Familiarity with cataloging/ metadata standards and tools. * Demonstrates achievements in professional research or service. * Experience working in an academic library or archive setting. This may include digitization of Special Collections and other library/faculty materials in text, image, and video formats. The MDSL provides leadership and coordination for new projects including collection identification, workflow management, metadata creation, web design, and preservation. The MDSL collaborates and coordinates with library staff, committees, and other University departments to shepherd digital projects from inception to completion. The MDSL must be able to coordinate relevant library systems and a variety of technologies in a team environment. This candidate will possess knowledge of digital content and service development as well as its delivery and promotion. The candidate will develop and implement all policies and systems in digital projects and digital preservation for the campus. The ability to creatively engage faculty and program directors in the development of the institution-wide institutional repository, while at the same time providing vision and leadership in the creation delivery of digital content, is a requirement. The Media/Digital Services Librarian supervises a staff of 2 full time paraprofessionals and 12+ student-workers. The position reports directly to the Director of Library Services.The successful candidate will have an ALA-accredited professional degree, or a Masters degree in another relevant field with appropriate work experience and demonstrated digital project management and supervisory skills. The candidate will also possess superior communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide-range of patrons and faculty. In addition, the MDSL will have significant experience with metadata standards and digital collection architectures and platforms such as ContentDM and BePress Digital Commons. The MDSL will have demonstrated knowledge of digital library content and metadata standards such as MODS, EAD, and Dublin Core along with digital preservation standards and practices. The MDSL will have web development experience (Adobe Creative Suite 5, XML, PHP, SQL) and working knowledge of relevant Web 2.0 technologies for digital content delivery. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in digital imaging, such as scanning or photography, and with experience handling a wide range of file types, including images, audio and video. TECHNICAL SERVICES SPECIALIST, MEDIA AND METADATA* * Swarthmore College seeks a qualified individual to be responsible for general acquisition and cataloging of videos. The position also provides support for in-house streaming video conversion and rights acquisition. Videos in all formats, including streaming, are used extensively throughout the curriculum, and requests for videos often need to be rushed in order to be available for classroom use. Media cataloging is relatively complex and requires extensive annotations and enhancements to available records in order to meet local standards required by the Film and Media Studies faculty. Working with the Digital Initiatives Group, the position is responsible for creation of descriptive metadata for items in the library's digital repositories such as DSpace and ContentDM. Items may include films, recorded performances and lectures, student theses, faculty scholarship and digitized archival records. The incumbent also contributes to the general acquisition and cataloging of monographic publications. Skills and Qualifications: * Undergraduate degree required. Familiarity with at least one foreign language required. * One to two years experience cataloging in an academic library environment required. Experience cataloging visual media preferred. Experience using the OCLC system for acquisitions or copy cataloging and similar functions in an integrated library system such as Millennium. * Prefer experience in cataloging digital objects using non-MARC metadata schema, such as Dublin Core, in a repository such as DSpace or ContentDM. * Demonstrates facility with PC or Macintosh hardware and software, particularly with standard word processing and email programs and basic email functionality, in order to assure efficiency and effectiveness in daily work.
