Hi friends,

I would like to be able to listen to BBC radio stations over the internet on my
phone, it is really just the BBC ones, does anyone know how I would do this
please?
Do I need to go to the BBC wek site on the phone and download and install an
app or something similar?

Many thanks in anticipation,

It seems to me that the developers of Fantastical are being a bit lazy.
Ilkka, who wrote Blind Square has it localized in many languages, as is

I think I will write Ilkka and ask how much work is involved in localizing

Every once in a while the native calendar would garble the order of

 This never happens in fantastical.
I like how, using natural language one can set where one wants the event

you indicate this in the sentence with slash followed by first letter of
that calendar. /h for home for example.

 Same goes for reminder lists.

Re: Proper way of connecting an iDevice to simultanious dualband WiFi?

2014-07-30 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

In my experience, if you have two SSID's that are identicle most
devices will just see one roam between the two if they are non
stationary; I have a couple of access points here all of which use the
same SSID and between them I get more than acceptable coverage
throughout the house in the garden.

What makes your situation a bit more interesting is that the cryteria
that your iPhone is using to determin which AP to use may not be the
cryteria you want. For example, it may be that the 2.4GHZ network has
better coverage than 5GHZ in your living room, but despite the lower
signal, 5GHZ may still be able to provide more throughput which is
obviously preferable for streaming. However, one would assume that iOS
would choose the SSID with a better signal, which in this situation
may not be ideal. NB: this is all speculation; I have not done any
testing to determin exactly what iOS would do in a situation like
this, although one would assume that it would behave in the way it
does with multiple 2.4 SSID's - E.G. pick the one with the best
signal.

For what it's worth, our main modem / switch / access point combo
device broadcasts 2.4 5GHZ. The 5GHZ is used by the Apple TV
although the SSID is hidden to avoid confusion for the rest of the
family. Everything else uses 2.4, along with the other access point.

Interesting topic; keep us posted.

Cheers,
Ben.

The router actually has default SSID's out of the box but of course we
change those. It does not stop you however from using the same SSID for
 both
bands. What is confusing about this is the fact that the term simultaneous
dual band is used for both the routers and the iDevices and hence my
questions. What do they mean by simultaneous? Those who share the opinion
that using the same SSID allows your device and router to automatically
choose the best connection while others say this is not the case, making
 the
 term simultaneous somewhat questionable.

 Hello Rick,

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you can
connect your iPhone to both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands your router broadcasts
 at the same time.
Your router most likely broadcasts 2 SSID's (one for 2.4 and 1 for 5 Ghz)
and my recommendation is to connect to the 5 Ghz band since your iPhone is
capable of that although it is only capable of the IEEE 802.11N standard
 and
 not the higher-throughput 802.11AC standard.

Your router is probably capable of providing simultaneous connections to
devices on the 2.4 and 5 Ghz spectrum, but a device like an iPhone or a
laptop can only connect to either one of them.

As for 802.11AC, it was approved only in January of this year so while some
devices came out before that supporting the draft version of 802.11AC, the
final version was not approved until early this year which is why apple
probably did not include it on the 5S and 5C or last fall's iPads.

 Sieghard

I recently upgraded my router to a Netgear Night Hawk which supports
everything including AC1300. My question is the following.

For best performance, of course I want to have my iDevices using
simultaneous dual band 802.11n. I've googled the subject and have found
conflicting opinions on this. Some say you have to use separate SSID's for
each band, 2.4ghz and 5ghz while others insist that the best way is to use
the same SSID for both bands to get the full possible speed.

What say you folks that have had experience with these dual band WiFi
routers? Right now I have it configured with separate SSID's and have my
Apple TV's using the 5ghz band for best video bandwidth and performance and
use the 2.4ghz band for other WiFi devices like my iPhone since I don't do
much video on them. I'd be interested in getting anyone's take on this.

 Best regards,

 Rick Alfaro

Re: IPhone 5s And Radio

2014-07-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I suppose it's subjective, but I would think most people would agree
that using the App Store on your iPhone would be the easiest way to go.
Bring up the App Store app on your iPhone, double tap the share tab at
the bottom of the screen, double tap in the search field and type your
search string, which would probably be iPlayer in this case. You can
then select from the list of suggestions below the edit field or double
tap the search button at the right of the keyboard to kick off a
complete search.

When the information on the iPlayer app comes up, double tap on the free
button and then on the install button. You'll be prompted for your Apple
ID password. After it's installed, you can double tap the open button or
look for it in your last home page.

I hope this helps. I also hope it's accurate. I'm in a hurry, so I'm
doing this from memory.

Actually, there is no best source on the Israeli Nazi crimes in Gaza. The
only reliable sources are the various pages of the social media, because
they have Eye witness accounts. The Arab and the Western media are
exercising high degrees of self-censorship to conform with their
government's foreign policy considerations, or to avoid being called
anti-Semitic. There are two iPhone apps which are not live streaming, but

I like how, using natural language one can set where one wants the event

Re: Kindle Ap

2014-07-30 Thread Michael Feir
I very much enjoy reading books with the Kindle app. The table of
contents is my only slight gripe as you can't flick between chapters
and other titles. Instead, you have to feel around the screen until
you hear the title you want and then double-tap it to go there. You
can scroll between pages of a large table of contents. It's very
workable but not as intuitive as it might be. Other than that, I've
had absolutely no isues with reading and jumping around in books.

Re: installing Itunes

2014-07-30 Thread Gmail
Sigh. Yes, I remember seeing that article now. Unfortunately, I don't know
quite how to use iTunes without the sidebar, but it can't be too hard, right?
I'll have to revisit Jonathan's podcasts on iTunes 11. :)

On Jul 29, 2014, at 8:29 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote:

 Hi Ann,

There is only one version of iTunes you can use and that one is best
installed from the computer where you want to use it and the Apple website.
 Here is what you do:

 1. Go to http://www.apple.com/itunes
 2. Use control+Shift+F to bring up the Jaws Find dialogue and ttype
“download” into the search box, then press enter. If you make sure you are at
the top of the page when you do this it will put right onto the “Download
 iTunes Now” link.
 3. Press enter to activate the link.
 4. On the next page just use the Jaws quick nav key for “buttons” which
is “b” and press it until you find the “download Now” button. If you use
Internet Explorer you should hear the message about the notification bar
where you can select to “run” or “save”. Use Alt+N to bring focus to these
buttons. I prefer to save the installation file first and then run it from my
hard drive, but especially if you have a fast internet connection you could
just run it. Keep in mind that it is a relatively large file so it may take a
while for it to download before the install wizard starts.
 5. In the installation wizard just accept the default choices and
 continue to press Next.

There is a set of scripts John Martin wrote which are called blindTunes and
which some people find helpful. They make a few things more accessible, but
you best check this out as there is a Podcast on the BlindTunes website which
you can find at the following address:

 http://www.blindTunes.net

If you want to start with John’s description/demo of what BlindTunes does,
 look for the following link:
Click here to hear an audio tour of Blind Tunes - Length 47 Minutes.

iTunes is actually very accessible as it is if you have one of the latest
versions of Jaws. Jaws 15 is of course best, but Jaws 14 and even 13 should
work well. Here Jonathan Mosen did a 2-part Podcast which I would definitely
recommend. It’s done in typical Jonathan fashion which means it’s done
extremely well. The Podcast was done as part of the FS Cast series of
podcasts and it was done with Jaws 14 and after iTunes 11 came out so it’s
very much up-to-date. Below are the direct links for both episodes:

 Part 1: Episode 73, December 2012
 http://podcast.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/episodes/fscast073-December2012.mp3

 Part 2: Episode 74, January 2013
 http://podcast.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/episodes/fscast074-January2013.mp3

apart from that Ari’s offer for some one-on-one help might be a good way to
go after you listened to Jonathan’s Podcast which I would do first so you get
an overview of how things work in iTunes.

One last suggestion would be that you not use the sidebar in iTunes 11. This
is not turned on by default, but if it is turned on it makes iTunes look a
bit more like iTunes 10 which a lot of people think is easier. However, a
recent article which somebody posted to the list a few days ago suggests that
in iTunes 12 the sidebar will be finally gone completely and iTunes 12 will
be released simultaneously with iOs 8 in mid to late September. It is not a
good idea to not upgrade iTunes as you may not be able to backup and restore
properly or at all if you have, for example, iOS 8 and iTunes 11. It is
therefore better to always update iTunes when updates are released and iTunes
will prompt you to do so automatically.

I found a while back that I like iTunes without the side bar better and it is
just as easy to use. Remember, in iTunes you mostly use the tab key to move
around, the F6 key is also important to jump to certain areas and it’s useful
to know that, for example, Control+1 will always take you to your music
library, Control+2 to your movie library, Control+3 goes to the TV Shows
library, Control+6 to the books library, Control+8 goes to your apps and
Control+0 goes to the iTunes Store page. OK, so at least in iTunes 11 this is
the case, I guess we have to wait and see how this works in itunes 12. I am
not terribly worried that accessibility takes a big step backwords in itunes
12, but then again one never knows.

Cheers,
Ben.

For best performance, of course I want to have my iDevices using

 Cheers,
 Ben.

The router actually has default SSID's out of the box but of course we

dual band is used for both the routers and the iDevices and hence my

As for 802.11AC, it was approved only in January of this year so while some
devices came out before that supporting the draft version of 802.11AC, the
final version was not approved until early this year which is why apple
probably did not include it on the 5S and 5C or last fall's iPads.

 of
doing so as suggested by Apple:

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

Learn how to turn off and on (restart) and reset your iPhone, iPad, or
 iPod
 touch.

 How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the
 red
slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
Personal note: for VoiceOver user this means hold power button for at
 least
4 seconds or until you hear: Power off, slide or double-tap. At this
 point
simply double-tap the screen and wait for about 30 seconds for the full
 shutdown to complete.

After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again
 until
 you see the Apple logo.
Personal note: for VoiceOver users this means press and hold the power
button for about 4 seconds then release the button and wait for about 30
seconds for the full restart--you will eventually hear VoiceOver begin
 speaking.

 How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't
 restart
 it.

To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at
 least
10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Personal note: it is specified that you should only use this method if
 you
can't manually shut down as described in the first part of this tutorial.
 In
other words, make all effort to shut down and restart properly, and if
 that
doesn't work, then choose this Sleep button+Home button procedure.

 Hi all,

I often come across listers suggesting to others ways of restarting
 their
iDevice in the event of a problem including using the power button and
 the
Home button which seems extreme, so I thought I would post the proper way
 of
doing so as suggested by Apple:

 In
other words, make all effort to shut down and restart properly, and if
 that
doesn't work, then choose this Sleep button+Home button procedure.

would probably be iPlayer in this case. You can then select from the list of

When the information on the iPlayer app comes up, double tap on the free

Re: Voices for voice dream

2014-07-30 Thread Richard Turner
There is no way to say which is the best voice. The question is, which voice do
you like best?
I personally like Laura from Acapella as the best American voice. Others like
Julie, also by Acapella.
Others prefer Kendra or Kimberly by Ivona.
Kate, from NeoSpeech is also very good.
I'd recommend that you sample the different voices and see which one sounds the
best to you.

Re: Voices for voice dream

2014-07-30 Thread Alex Hall
That's impossible for anyone to say, since everyone likes different voices.
Some people will say Neospeech Kate is good, others that Ivona has the best
voices. Some might even stick up for A Capella, though I can't imagine how. The
nice thing is that all these voices have online demo pages on the
manufacturers' websites, so you can test them out before making a purchase in
VDR.

Changing Account Settings from Imap to Pop?

Hi, all

My husband and I have one email acconount that we share. I have it set to Imap,

Also, I've tried deleting the account and starting over. I put in my name and
email information, and there doesn't seem to be a place for server names, etc.
When I press the next button, it says looking up and then presents me with
the Imap option only.

Is pop setup gone from Mail in iOS7?

Thanks,
Teresa
