Re: TV Guide App

2017-01-26 Thread Kathy Metters
I use a lot of the native apps such as music mail and weather on a daily basis
so those don't count. My favorite apps by third parties are as follows:
Downcast my number one go to app on a daily basis A must have.
two bard
three dropbox
 for dual lingo
 five Audible
Six blindfold travelcards
 seven I associate two
8 Seven little words
Nine newsify
 10 sound cloud
You might notice that I have quite a few games on my list of favorites, it is
because as a child, it was hard to come by any game That was accessible to
someone who couldn't see. So I enjoy a lot of my games and I have over 50 games
on my phone. My phone has truly open up a whole new world for me. That's one
reason why I just love Apple!

In fact, I even play the game less as a result of this problem. Maybe it will

For the most part the essential apps have been mentioned. I just wanted to add
that this is a situation where you want multiple apps, it's like installing a
kitchen cabinet, you use more than one tool to get the job done.
The 3 apps you definitely want are iDentifi, Tap Tap See and Talking Goggles.
As Richard said, Talking Goggles costs a buck, the other two are free and
basically do the same thing, but you may find you get a beter result with one
over the other in some cases.
If you want to spend a bit of money then Digit Eyes is still a very good app
for scanning actual barcodes, iDentifi and Tap Tap See just recognize whatever
object based on various other aspects using computer vision. Talking Goggles I
find most useful in video mode where it looks at whatever you point it at and
does OCR in real time. It does take a few seconds so if I point it towards a
package it is necessary to hold still for maybe 5 or 10 seconds and see what it
comes up with.
Lastly there is Be my Eyes or CrowdVis. They connect you via Facetime with a
sighted helper and you can show them whatever it is you want to identify or do
and they try and give you directions based on what see.

Sieghard

Re: Couple of Kindle App questions

2017-01-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure what you're asking here, but some of the differences I can
think of off the top of my head are:

* BARD is only available to US citizens.

* BARD and BARD books are free. The Kindle app is free but the books are
not.

* You'll find different sets of books available for each app. For
example, you'll probably find more of the most popular books on Kindle,
and you'll find them sooner.

* With BARD you're getting audio books read by a narrator with
hierarchical navigation. With Kindle, you're getting your TTS to read a
book in text to you.

There are probably some more differences, and I might have
oversimplified some of the differences, but this is what I thought of at
the moment.

On 26/01/17 03:45, Mike Ulrich wrote:

Good morning Terri,
What's the difference between Kindle and BARD?
I mean, do you think you could find a book that isn't listed on BARD, but
Kindle would have it?
I've tried to search for some books on BARD, only to find they're not listed.
So this might be an option.
I'd be interested in the price too.

Subject: Couple of Kindle App questions

Hello everyone,

Ok, I found the Kindle App using my Iphone. I read from AppleVis, that it's
quite accessible. So far I agree, as I got signed in easily, and chose a book.
It wanted me to choose 10, but I knew I couldn't read all that in just a week.

I got a 7 day trial.

So here are some questions I have.

Does anyone know how much the App costs?

If not, can someone please tell me how to find this out?

Also, if I want to continue using the App, would it just be a 1-time fee, or a
monthly fee?

What voices does the Kindle App use, just the Voiceover voices?

Here is my last question.

How well does the Kindle App work with the Ipad Mini 4th generation? Or does it
work best with the Iphone?

Any help with my questions will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

unable to pair my apple magic keyboard with the apple tv 4

2017-01-26 Thread Larry Lumpkin
I have an apple magic keyboard a generation or two back. It is the one with
the little knob you loosen with a key to put two double a batteries in the
barrel at the back. The keyboard is metal instead of the plastics the later
models are made of. I don't have sighted help to get the model right now
but will take it somewhere tomorrow. The keyboard pairs beautifully with my
IPhone 7 but absolutely will not pair with tha apple tv 4. Voiceover never
reads the asked-for pairing code and the process times out saying that the
pairing code was not correct. Any ideas anyone?

Re: IOS 10.3 is awesome!

2017-01-26 Thread Wayne Merritt
For those interested, there are many sites on the web where you can
view release notes, and even a few dozen channels on YouTube which
will give you an overview of what's in the beta, to going in great
detail. One such YouTube channel is called Everything Apple Pro.
Though the guy who does the updates does not go into accessibility
changes as much, he does talk a lot about the various changes and
enhancements, both for betas and standard releases. He has also become
known for doing tests with new iPhones each year in demonstrating how
much pressure they can stand, such as putting a phone under water for
up to 30 minutes, and pulling it out virtually undamaged.

There’s also an app called bespecular; found in the App Store.

It is so very easy to use with Voice Over. You take a picture. You then record
your question. You then send out request.

You might have to wait a little bit, but soon your answers come on a rolling
in. Some might be in a recorded audio format. Then some come in as a typed out
response.

Let’s say a response comes in, telling you to rotate that can you’re trying to
figure out exactly what the heck it is. You can then turn the can and take
another picture, along with the recording of the exact same question, and send
it through again.

So this comes in handy. Check it out and see for yourselves.

figure out exactly what the heck it is. You can then turn the can and take
another picture, along with the recording of the exact same question, and send
it through again.

So this comes in handy. Check it out and see for yourselves.

Sieghard

Hi!
If you ask me, Look Tel Recognizer is far beyond suggested apps.
Yes, it costs some money and yes, you'll need some sighted
assistance for the first couple of days but after that you'll be
  good to o.
This app doesn't work as Tap Tap See, Camfind or Goggles. You
need to shoot some pictures of things such as CD covers, food
cans, soda cans or whatever and create your own database of mostly
used things. You can associate audio or text tag beside every
single photo in your gallery and the recognition is fast and
  reliable.
For instance, when I shoot some bills with TapTapSee I need to
wait more than 30 seconds to get the description and sometimes is
good, sometimes not. With Recognizer I know what bill I have in a
single second, even with my old 4S. I was amazed when it
  recognized the folded bill.
If someone is asking why I use Recognizer instead of the
dedicated Money Reader app or whatever it is called these days,
the answer is because bills from my country are not supported and
  Recognizer is doing excellent job.
Now let's get back. For reading instructions I can recommend Text
Grabber or Voice. Text Grabber is something like few bucks and
Voice is free. There's also the KNFB Reader but it costs more
money than I'll ever spend for the single app.
Be My Eyes is an app for community of blind people and helpers, I
  use it often.

I would like to find some products that will do these sorts of things.

Read CD titles, (Yes I do still have some of those)

Read DVD titles

read labels on cans

read packages of boxed foods, or such things as packages of chips,
cookies, crackers, and even containers of ice cream.

I would also like an App that might tell me what cans of soda I am
getting out. Usually I try to put these in a certain order, but they can
get mixed up.

Also, with the boxed food, being able to read directions would be quite
helpful.

I don't know if such Apps exist. I would like to find one that is quite
accessible, and that I would most likely just have to pay a 1-time fee
for. I don't really want to have to spend more than $50, as money will
be tight. But depending on the App, and what kind of feedback I receive,
I may be willing to pay a little more.

I had Tap-Tap See a while back. This was when you didn't have to
purchase it. I did get it to tell me what ice cream I pulled out of the
fridge once. But unfortunately, I am pretty much hopeless when trying to
use the camera. I know this will need to improve quite well. But I just
don't know how to make that happen.

I have heard of the Apps such as, Be My Eyes, and Identefy. I apologize
if that one is spelled incorrectly.

However, I don't have a clue as to how they work, or how they are
different. I know that I could get descriptions from AppleVis, and I do
plan to view the site. But honestly, it helps best for me to learn from
all of you, much better.

For instance, I can follow steps I get, and even though you all give
opinions, it does usually help me to make decisions. Plus, I can archive
the message to look back to them, and not have to repeat some of the
same questions. I really prefer to not do that!

So if any of you could give me some ideas, or thoughts, or advice, I
surely would be grateful!

If you would prefer to contact me off-list, as to not clutter up the
list, please feel free to do so.

Thank you,

Terri

How many checks do you have in a month? I only have a handful of
paper checks in a year. With so few checks, it is a whole lot easier
opening up an app, logging into an account and handing the phone to a
sighted person to take photos of the check for deposit. The whole
process takes less than two minutes. I also live in a big city, where
I walk by talking ATMs regularly and often deposit the check there.
My bank does not require an envelope and reads the amount on the check
without the blind person needing to enter it. These options are a lot
simpler than creating a iPhone stand out of a cardboard box so it is
at the perfect height to take the picture.

There is no cost for the Kindle app, you just buy books on Amazon. I believe
there is some sort of unlimited option in the States, you can probably find
that pretty easily on the Amazon website.
Just as with Audible, you can't buy books from inside the Kindle app because
then Amazon would have to pay Apple 30% as it would be considered an in-app
purchase. You buy your books on Amazon and they then are available from inside
the Kindle app.

Thank you,

Terri

Does being an Amazon Prime member have any cost savings for Audible books?
Thanks, Keith

Mike, the Kindle app accesses the entire amazon Kindle store. You have to
generally buy the books, although if you're a Prime member you get many of the
books either free or low cost.

While I haven't accessed it recently, I found the Kindle app to be more
accessible than the Kindle hardware itself, although this may well have changed.

Thanks!..Mike

Thank you,

Terri

Re: depositing a check

2017-01-26 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
yes, as far as the amount of checks I deposit each month, it may be 3.
I know it is easier to give the phone to a sighted person after loging in,
getting to the tab for deposit. It does only take about 1 minute but,
sometimes it is important to have privacy. Thank you, Andy and Shubert

What is the most accessible audio/video editor?

2017-01-26 Thread Cris Ali
Hi Folks,
The subject says it all. I am asking what is the most accessible audio/video
editing app with voiceover? I am looking for basic editing, nothing fancy. I
want to do cut, paste, trim, and from time to time put a couple of tracks
together.
That is basically it.

I would appreciate it if you folks share your experience with me.

Regards,

Cris

Re: strange change in facebook accessibility of reacting posts

Hello Dave,

I can confirm this behavior with VoiceOver and the most recent update to FB.
This seems to be the case in all of their apps as of right now. I have noticed
this new behavior in Messages, and the Pages Manager apps as well.

Thanks,

Re: iPhone & apple watch paring

2017-01-26 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello Fanus,

In order to pair an Apple Watch with a new phone, you need to unpair it from
the old one. I have had to do this a few times when I have just gotten a new
iPhone. What I usually do is unpair it, then back up the ipHone. Then I restore
the new iPhone from the backup of the old one, which means I also get the
backup of the Apple Watch. Then when I pair the watch to the phone, I can
restore from the latest watch backup.

If this isn't a new iPhone, I don't know how you would get a backup of your
watch from the old phone onto the new one. You might want to check with Apple.

Best,
Anna

When you do that conversion, do the books still have any navigation markers

really good at recognising products, plus, it is a good colour recogniser!!

2. You say you have trouble with aiming/using the camera for such apps:
Something worth spending out on is a stand for reading/recognising. I have the
StandScan Pro, but, I believe you might do better with the Fopydo stand. people
here can give you the link. It is cheaper and more versatile. This will be
usful when using OCR apps, which you will need to do for your mail or
instructions etc, but also useful for smaller item product recognition. So,
tins/packets/boxes. Because it will position your phone perfectly, and hold it
still while you take the shot.

   Hope these ideas help!

Thank you,

Terri

Hi Joanne,

I've heard that the Roger app is causing considerable battery drain when not in

Not sure if you have it installed or not but just thought I'd mention it.

Apps that help you recognize cans, packages, and other items

2017-01-26 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

I know that there are products out there that can read bar codes, and do
other things as well. Every once when a product is discussed, I do
sometimes at least read part of the thread.

However, in all honesty, I wish I would have now payed more attention.

In a week, I am moving in to a 1 bedroom. I have had a roommate for a
while now, but I feel I need to give it a shot, and live more
independently. While I have certainly done this before, it has been some
time.

While it's not as though I will always be alone, I would like to help
myself as much as I can.

Not sure if you have it installed or not but just thought I'd mention it.

Can i know, if anyone else having this issue?

Thanks Don,

Mike, the Kindle app accesses the entire amazon Kindle store. You have to
generally buy the books, although if you're a Prime member you get many of the
books either free or low cost.

While I haven't accessed it recently, I found the Kindle app to be more
accessible than the Kindle hardware itself, although this may well have changed.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Couple of Kindle App questions

2017-01-26 Thread Richard Turner
I will put my answers after each question, then add some comments at the end:
So here are some questions I have.

Does anyone know how much the App costs?

If not, can someone please tell me how to find this out?

Answer: The app is free. However most of the books cost anywhere from $0.99 to
$10 and more. Also, if I want to continue using the App, would it just be a
1-time
fee, or a monthly fee?
Answer: see first answer.

What voices does the Kindle App use, just the Voiceover voices?
Answer: Yes, just the VoiceOver voices.

Here is my last question.

How well does the Kindle App work with the Ipad Mini 4th generation? Or
does it work best with the Iphone?
Answer: It works the same on all Apple devices.
Now for my comments.
My first choice for reading material is Bookshare, using the Voice Dream Reader
app. I always check there first. If a book is not available through BookShare,
I check BARD. If not available there, then I check for Kindle versions through
Amazon.
Bookshare now has over five hundred thousand titles, and they get brand new
books from the publishers quite quickly. So, for my $50 per year, I get tons of
reading material that costs way less than buying individual books through
Amazon.
But, if I buy a kindle version, since I use Windows on my computer, I convert
those books into generic ePub format so I can listen to them using Voice Dream
Reader and its much better voices. The program for converting the books is
Codex. I have a link to it from my web site:

Re: the ringer and vibration

2017-01-26 Thread Jed Barton
Well, this is indeed a pretty serious bug. has anone reported it to
apple? By no means should you have to turn speech off. Vibrate on
silent was indeed on.
When you flip that switch, it should just vibrate when people call. Any
ideas?

Go to settings/sound and confirm that vibrate on silent is also on.

For me, this seems to work you could then turn speech on again with a
three finger double tap to see who is calling you.
Hope this helps

vibrate at all.
So when i called myself the 1st time, it did 2 quick pulses, and
stopped. The next 2 times, it didn't vibrate at all. What am i missing
