YouTube TV adds 14 cities, now available to half of US homes - CNET

2017-08-17 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 10:00 AM
YouTube TV adds 14 cities, now available to half of US homes - CNET
Watch out cable TV, YouTube is coming to get you. And now it's after your
paying subscribers in Boston, Tampa, Seattle and 11 other cities.
YouTube TV, Google's live TV streaming service that costs $35 per month, is
available in 14 more US cities starting Thursday. Combined with the 15
cities already served, half of the households in America can now subscribe
to YouTube TV.
The service also adds national news network Newsy and the Tennis Channel to
its slate of 50-odd live channels today, as well as Boston's NESN, home of
Red Sox baseball. Coming soon are My TV and CW networks in select markets.
(The CW network is a joint venture of CBS, the owner of CNET, and Warner
Bros.)
But Google's expanding venture into pay TV won't stop there. In "the coming
weeks" YouTube TV says it will add 17 more markets including Denver,
Cleveland and St. Louis, bringing its total to 46 markets and 64 percent of
US households. See below for a full list of the new cities.
Not to be confused with the free YouTube you know from countless how-to,
music and cat-related videos, YouTube TV is one of a growing number of
options aimed at cord cutters and "cord nevers" seeking an alternative to
traditional cable TV.
Like competitors DirecTV Now, Hulu with Live TV, PlayStation Vue and Sling
TV, it streams live and on-demand TV over the internet to TVs, phones and
computers, with no contracts. These services range in price from $20 to $40
per month and offer some combination of national channels (ESPN, Bravo, FX,
MSNBC) as well as local (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC).
A locals-first strategy aimed at millennials
The biggest difference between those other four live TV streaming services
and YouTube TV is a focus on local channels. Like the others it has a solid
if not comprehensive array of national networks such as ESPN and FX, but
unlike its competitors, YouTube TV is not available nationwide. Unless you
live in one of those 29 (soon to be 46) markets, you can't subscribe to the
service.
If you're used to internet video being available everywhere, that can seem
like a pretty big problem. But for YouTube TV it's a strategy. I asked Kelly
Merryman, managing director of content partnerships at YouTube, about its
unique approach.
"We want to make sure we have at least three of the four broadcasters live
on a local basis, getting those affiliate deals done so we could provide
great local coverage. We're really focused on the top 50 DMAs and lighting
those up," she says, referring to Direct Market Areas, as measured by
Nielsen.

A focus on live local TV channels is YouTube TV's biggest differentiator.
Sarah Tew/CNET
In other words, YouTube TV will only launch in cities where it can offer
three or four local broadcasters -- ABC, CBS, Fox and/or NBC. Nineteen of
its 29 markets have all four, with the other 10 missing just one. People in
Dallas can't get their local ABC station on YouTube TV, for example, and
Seattle subscribers miss out on Fox (bummer, Seahawks fans). Check out my
updated local channel chart for details.
There's a big difference between local and national channels. Nationwide
channels like AMC, TNT and The Disney Channel offer one or two national
feeds (a second one is sometimes time-shifted for west coast viewing), but
local stations typically air news and other programming endemic to the area,
in addition to programs from the big four networks. Because most local
stations, aka network affiliates, are owned by companies other than one of
the big four networks in question, they usually require separate contracts
with providers such as streaming services, cable systems and satellite
networks.
YouTube TV's locals-first approach means users won't have to worry about
missing one of those networks. Or at least, more than one of them.
"When we first launched this service we spent a lot of time with our users
trying to understand what they were seeking," says Merryman. "What we heard
is that they were seeking a service that leaned into both local and live. We
wanted to prove that that was what was missing, and what was necessary to
reach this millennial audience."
And Merryman says it's working so far. The majority of YouTube TV
subscribers are millennials, and the majority of content subscribers watch
on the service is live, as opposed to on-demand or recorded on the cloud
DVR, she says. YouTube declined to provide specific numbers, however, and
also wouldn't say how many subscribers it had or how many hours per day
people watched.
The battle to stream the big four networks
All five live TV streaming services continue to add local channels, and
signing them up has become an arms race. According to my running tally, with
this expansion, YouTube now has more total local channels (105) than DirecTV
Now, although it still trails Hulu and PlayStation Vue. Its impending
17-city expansion would vault it into first place if Hulu a

Apple MacBook Air (2017) review - CNET

2017-08-17 Thread M. Taylor
CNET Reviews - Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 4:00 AM
Apple MacBook Air (2017) review - CNET
Apple's MacBook Air is as close to iconic as a piece of consumer technology
gets. It's the single laptop model you're most likely to see everywhere,
from college campuses to airports to coffee shops and even offices. And it's
been that way for a very long time.
That's the problem. Not counting an incremental spec bump in mid-2017, this
is still internally almost the same MacBook Air as the last refresh in 2015,
and externally, it's had basically the same design since 2010 (when the
original 2008 design got an overhaul). In technology terms, that's roughly
forever.
 Sarah Tew/CNET
But it's also a testament to what a strong product the Air was in its
heyday. To have a laptop that looks and feels the same as it did for so many
years while still a maintaining a loyal following, that's a rare
achievement. The MacBook Air is no longer the best-for-almost-everyone
device it once was, but it's the least expensive way (by far) to get MacOS
on a laptop, so there's certainly still a place for it. Note that the Air we
tested had a Core i7 CPU and 256GB SSD upgrade, for a total of $1,349,
£1,234 or AU$2,039. The Air still starts at $999, £949 and AU$1,499, and can
be found for even less online.
SYSTEM NAME
Price as reviewed $1,349, £1,234 or AU$2,039 (starts at $999, £949 or
AU$1,499)
Display size/resolution 13-inch, 1,440x900-pixel display
CPU 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-5650U
Memory 8GB DDR3 SDRAM 1,600MHz
Graphics1,536MB Intel HD Graphics 6000
Storage 256GB SSD
Networking 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless; Bluetooth 4.0
Operating systemMacOS 10.12.6 Sierra
Still kicking
And a lot about the MacBook Air still works. As a long-time Air user, but
also someone who hasn't spent a lot of time on one over the last few years,
firing up the 2017 version felt like visiting an old friend.
There's the just-right size of the 13-inch screen, still the best balance
between viewability and portability; the rock-solid aluminum body, which can
stand up to years of abuse; and the chunky island-style keyboard, itself now
extinct across the rest of the MacBook line, replaced by super-shallow
butterfly keys that lack this level of tactile feedback.
  Sarah Tew/CNET
The Air also scores points for being the last MacBook with a good,
old-fashioned USB-A port. You know, the kind that every mouse, memory key
and other accessory you own fits into. The MacBook Pro and the 12-inch
MacBook have both gone all-in on USB-C, which is forward-looking to be sure,
but a limiting frustration for many.
Picking it up, I was reminded of another reason I loved this particular
laptop line for so long: the MagSafe power connection. The plug, which
automatically pulls away from the body when you yank the cord or trip over
it, remains one of the most brilliant bits of consumer PC engineering ever.
  Sarah Tew/CNET
It's since been replaced by USB-C power connections, which are handy for
sharing data, power, video and other connections through the same port, but
not nearly as flexible. That classic MagSafe has rescued many, many laptops
from a grim fate over the years, and that's just the ones I've personally
almost killed.
Feeling its age
But using a MacBook Air, even a brand new one, in 2017 feels like getting
stuck in a bit of a time warp. The processor is years out of date compared
to newer slim laptops -- even though the big update for 2017 is a slight
base CPU uptick, from a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 to a 1.8GHz one, or in our
case, an optional 2.2GHz Core i7. All are from the same fifth generation of
those chips, while Intel is about to announce details of the upcoming
eighth-generation Core CPUs.
I'd argue that for websurfing, video streaming and social media, it's not a
huge deal to have an older-generation processor, but for a thousand bucks
and up, you're not wrong to want something newer. It is great, however, to
get 8GB of RAM as the default now, over the previous 4GB. The optional Core
i7 in our test system helped the Air keep pace with, or beat, some slim
laptops with newer Core i5 CPUs. But much more importantly, the Air is still
a battery life king, running more than 10 hours.

A 13-inch Pro vs. the 13-inch Air in a battle of the bezels.
Sarah Tew/CNET
The single biggest thing that keeps the MacBook Air stuck in the past is its
display. This is a 1,440x900-pixel display, the same as the Air has used for
many generations. It's also not an IPS display, the in-plane switching
technology found in newer laptops that helps with off-axis viewing. For
anything above an ultrabudget laptop, it's not wrong to expect a higher
resolution, especially in 2017, where even bargain basement televisions have
4K panels, and a growing number of midrange laptops are shooting past
1,920x1,080 towards 2,560x1,440 or even 4K.
So many new devices have shaved down the bezel, which is what we call the
outer border around the screen. TVs

hello, the same thing happened to me. I wrote to support at Lyft.com, and
they told me in an answer to log out, and then log back in again. However,
the driver icons were still at the bottom of the screen when I did log out
and log back in again. you will still be able to schedule a ride, because I
was able to. Good luck. I really wish that there were two applications and
there wouldn't be any confusion. Esther

Re: A parcel track question

Well, it wasn't that hard to find my tracking numbers in Amazon so I pasted
them into the edit field. All I can say is with this option alone this app
rocks! It really is cool and gives you notifications when anything changes.
What are the differences in the paid version? I have no problem paying for it
but I would kind of curious. Let me know if you guys would. Thanks much and you
are right, it is great!

I haven't bothered with forwarding emails yet since I find this much easier, by

Now, just out of curiocity I did forward a tracking email today, I then opened
the app, tapped on the Profile tab, then to the Inbox and the message I sent
did show up there. I think you have to double tap it, at least after I did this
and went back to the Parcels tab that package was set up and it was tracking.
Since I didn't like what got selected and put in the "Content" field. At this
point I don't think I'll use this feature, just as Mark said it's super easy to
copy a tracking number and create a new package this way.

Hello,

I just want to chime in on this thread by saying that I have been absolutely
delighted with Parcel Track.

While I have not used the message forwarding inbox feature, what I have done,
over 7 times in the past two weeks is to simply split-tap a tracking number in
an email, on my iPhone; then select copy. Next, I open the Parcel Track app
and simply paste the tracking number in the edit field. This technique has
worked beautifully for me.

As yet, I have tracked UPS, USPS, and FedEx packages.

As for amazon tracking numbers appearing in emails while this is true I was

RE: App switcher on the Apple Watch

2017-08-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thanks, I have set up my dock, I was more thinking about closing apps I have
used from time to time as I do on my iPhone. I guess that is not an option on
the Apple Watch.

RE: apple watch when out of range of iPhone?

2017-08-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Watch will work, just not all functions. You should still be able to use
the Workout app, I do when I go for a walk or run and it works. There are
reviews which say you need to calibrate it first to be more accurate even
though the series 2 watch has its own GPS, I went for a run the other day and
having run the same route before with my phone it seemed reasonably accurate.
I would, however, wait another month or so until the Apple Keynote in
September. There are rumours Apple may release a series 3 watch with built-in
LTE connectivity which means you could truly do a lot more with the watch than
now and you would still get messages, notifications, phone calls and all that
even if you don’t have your iPhone along. Even if said watch is more expensive
if it is released it will most likely mean that the series 2 watch will drop in
price.
Now you waited this long why not wait another month, I always think it’s a bad
idea to buy any device within 2 or 3 months of when the next generation is
released. With a phone it may be different if, for example, your phone
completely dies or is stolen and you absolutely can’t wait, but if you have a
working phone now then it’s definitely the worst time to buy an iPhone 7/7 Plus
or 6S/6S Plus and in the case of the watch which is entirely a luxury device
it’s not a big deal to wait another month or two. I bought my series 2 watch
last October and I must say that I use it a lot less than I thought. It’s of
course nice to have a watch and the ability to tell time silently via vibration
is a nice feature.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Re: apple watch when out of range of iPhone?

2017-08-17 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello Simon,

Certain functions don't work when you're out of range of the phone. For
instance, unless you have Wi-Fi calling on and are connected to a Wi-Fi
network, you can't make and receive calls. If you have the Series 1 or first
generation watch, which doesn't have GPS, you won't have access to the phone's
GPS when it's out of range. The series 2 watch has built-in GPS. However, many
functions work fine without an iPhone nearby, including the Workout app,
timers, and anything that doesn't require the phone's cellular and GPS
features. The watch can connect to any Wi-Fi network that the phone has
connected to in the past, so if you're connected to such a network, the watch
can do things like iMessages on its own. Since you're tracking swim workouts, I
assume you're buying the series 2 watch. It will track your workouts just fine
with no phone around.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

Subject: Backbeat Sense by Plantronics, was FW: Bluetooth headphones

 Greetings,

As promised, I am writing about the Backbeat Sense Bluetooth headphones
from Plantronics that I received yesterday.
These are over the ear headphones that claim 18 hours of talk time, have a
microphone and Plantronics usual attention to detail with the spoken
 prompts about battery, pairing, etc.
I had a pair of Bose Mobile over the ear headphones that I really loved,
but they were only wired. They died recently after 7 years of daily use.

I was looking for a stereo headphone that had Bluetooth when I came across
 these.
Regular Price, $179. (That is what I paid for the Bose 7 years ago.
B&H Video/Audio in New York has some for $116.
They come with the micro USB cable for charging, but no wall charger.
They offer one, which we bought, for $6.00.

They come in a very nice box, with also a very nice carrying case.
The selling point for me was that they can connect with two different
 Bluetooth devices.
The delightful surprise that I discovered when I opened the box is that
they also have a 3.5 to 3.5 MM cable so you can use them as wired
headphones. What they say about that in the documentation is that you can
use them when the battery dies. So, in actuality, you can use them with
 three devices.

I would say the sound quality for listening is almost, if not as good as,
 the Bose were.

They are very comfortable, and the over the head band is adjustable.
They feel like they are made from very high quality material.
The 3.5 MM cable plugs into the bottom of the right ear cup.

An update

2017-08-17 Thread Patti Johnson
For anybody who may be interested, grin; I chose not to change my
carrier. My friend told me that the commercials she had been seeing
said that TMobile would pay off your phone if you were switching from
Verizon. That possibly was local, I don't know, so I just decided it
wasn't really worth the effort.
I just wish I could pay my phone off and be done with it but I can't,
so I will ha ve to grit my teeth till it gets finished, then my bill
will be lower again.
Thanks to those who commented, I appreciated your input.
I do think though once the phone is paid off I may look at Consumer Cellular.

to schedule a ride even after you do this. Esther

Re: major problem with the lift app

2017-08-17 Thread Esther Levegnale
hello, the same thing happened to me. I wrote to support at Lyft.com, and they
told me in an answer to log out, and then log back in again. However, the
driver icons were still at the bottom of the screen when I did log out and log
back in again. you will still be able to schedule a ride, because I was able
to. Good luck. I really wish that there were two applications and there
wouldn't be any confusion. Esther
