Re: Voice dream reader

2017-09-27 Thread Dana Leet
Hello everyone, do you think that it might work to do in iCloud back up to
yesterday to restore from an iCloud back up reset the phone and do that would
that possibly bring me back to where I was yesterday because of the fact that I
do believe that iCloud Drive is on for Voice Dream so just wondered if you guys
would think that might work to fix this mess or not

Youch that totally sucks, having to redownload a massive library like
that and having it not even download properly to your phone making you
have to figure out another way to get them all there.

iOS 11 Maps VoiceOver Reading-Turn-Instruction Bug

2017-09-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Below my signature, you will see a bug report I recently submitted to Apple.

Please join me in requesting that this bug be resolved in a future release
of iOS 11.

Please feel free to use any or all of the following text in your feedback
submissions.

If you are a developer, please use the Apple Bug Reporter.

If you are not a developer, without going into details as to why, I
strongly, strongly recommend that you submit your feedback directly to apple
at:
https://www.apple.com/feedback/

or, if you prefer, make your submission to the accessability team via email.

Regardless of which of the above methods you choose, I also encourage you to
send feedback, via the feedback utility, located inside the iOS Maps app,
itself. To do this:

1.
Open the iOS Maps app.

2.
Select Settings.

3.
Select Report an Issue. If this is your first time doing so, you will have
to agree to the terms of the feedback utility.

4.
Select Other Issue, General App Feedback.

5.
Enter up to 1000 characters of a description.

6.
Select the Send button, located near the upper right corner of the display.

That's all there is to it.

Okay, as always, thank you for your support.

Mark

[BEGIN BUG REPORT]
TITLE:
iOS 11 Maps VoiceOver Reading-Turn-Instruction Bug

DESCRIPTION:
Unlike in iOS 10, in iOS 11, VoiceOver does not read the turn-direction
information, located at the top of the display, in a live route.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
Launch the Maps apps.

3.
Set a destination and select the Go button to begin the route.

Siri will announce a direction instruction; for example, "In one mile, turn
left onto Main Street." As one travels, the dynamic distance value to Main
Street is displayed near the top of the screen, complete with an image
reflecting the upcoming turn instruction.

However, when a VoiceOver user places focus on this area in order to hear
the turn instruction along with the diminishing distance value and the
street name, unlike in previous versions of iOS where a VoiceOver user
could, via single-finger swipe gesture, place focus on any of these three
elements, VoiceOver can now access the distance value and street name, only.

In order for a VoiceOver user to hear the turn instruction, on demand,
she/he must single-finger, double-tap the upper left corner of the display
after which he/she must single-finger, double-tap this area again, in order
to return to normal VoiceOver screen navigation functionality.

In short, in iOS 11, a VoiceOver user is now required to use two additional
gestures in order to obtain on-demand travel instructions in a live Route.
Please keep in mind that many blind and low vision travelers use a cane,
guide dog, or some kind of navigation-assistance tool, requiring the use of
one hand at all times, making the cost of these two additional gestures
extremely high.

I fervently request that VoiceOver Maps app functionality be restored to
that of iOS 10 so that the upcoming turn-instruction, distance, and upcoming
street name can be read from the same display screen.

Thank you.

But how do you delete apps or totally remove apps in IOS 11?

Re: Voice dream reader

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
I feel your pain, because I have had to rebuild my library onto past occasions.
I don't have as many books as you, but I had a lot, well over 1000. I haven't
updated my phone. You might just leave the app open and give it a rest. With
the library that large, it is probably going to take you quite some time to
have everything sync up. At least that's my hope. It seems like the cloud thing
has been working better since a recent update or two ago. Do you have a newer
phone with a faster processor? My old iPad Mini too just cannot cope with cloud
sync and a library as large as mine. But my iPhone 7 is doing quite nicely.
Don't give up hope yet, until you leave the app open and just let it hang out
and see if things sync up.

easiest way to share a video from my iphone?

2017-09-27 Thread R Van Lant
Hi,
I have a couple videos that I want to share with family that I've taken on my
iphone 6S. They are too big to send via text message or email. I do not
really want to share them publicly on Facebook. So, what is my best option for
sharing them with non-iphone users? Should I create a public folder in Dropbox
and can I then share the video to there? Is so, do I create that public view
folder within the Dropbox app or via the dropbox website? Any other better
ideas? I also do have a video on my old iphone 4 of my now deceased dad
reading to my kids. I have not found a way to get that video off the phone to
somewhere I can save it.

Thanks.

Voice dream reader

2017-09-27 Thread Dana Leet
I have never been more upset than I am today. I am a book share guru. And I
had a voice dream reader library with about 3000 books in it approximately 11
gigs. Recently with the iOS 11 update I’ve been noticing that books will get to
70% downloaded and then stop and if you go to the book share site on a computer
or if you go to the book share site and then download the books to voice stream
from that site I am finding that it normally works so there is definitely a
problem more importantly though, today we tried cloud sync and let’s just say I
believe it is now stuck and the play options and every other option necessary
to read a book are dimmed on every book in my library. Bus as far as I can
tell, I am going to lose every single book that I have. I’m just letting you
all know that someone needs to create an app that will read book share books
that is light candle that will actually keep the books whenever you get a new
device and login etc. this is ridiculous what I meant to say is Kindle. I
really am upset, because this is over 10 months worth of books that now we have
to re-download and it said that most likely we will have to start using ST
cards and the Victor Stream most likely because it doesn’t seem this means of
reading and holding books in the library utilizing voice stream is very valid

The apps for bose hearphones

2017-09-27 Thread TaraPrakash
Dear all.
I just started using a new bose hearphone noise cancellation headphones set.
The sound is amazing. I am able to use it without installing any app even
though the iphoen suggested couple of apps for this accessory as soon as i
connected.
Do I need the app for anything? I thought app will provide me option to connect
to tune in directly or some music options from the hearphone itself. But
doesn't look like.
Secondly, I tried it with the cord to use it without bluetooth. Sadly, it is a
proprietory cable one side of the connection is 3.5 mm. But the other side that
goes in to hearphones is a different size. I think I will need a different
cable as the sound that is coming from iphone using that cable is
uninteligible. It's creepy quite a different from the original sound. I mean
you can hear things but cannot make out what is being said.
Please let me know if anyone has any experience using hearphones with audio
cable.

Thanks

Re: 64 bit radium not working after upgrade

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Anna,
My friend says he can't get to settings at all. I can get to settings on my
iPad mini, because it's under "more options. My phone has not yet been
upgraded, so I can't comment there. For those of you who have upgraded your
phone or iPod touches and use Radium, can you get to settings? If so, how? He
says he can't.

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hi richard,
Your findings are the same as mine. If you flick, you can't get past the first
station, you just going to loop. But you can explore down the screen. Not
perfect, but it works. And maybe the good folks there who developed the app
will figure out why the flicking doesn't work and fix it. If we all write and
let them know that this is an issue, hopefully they will do something.

gloves for use with smart phones?

2017-09-27 Thread R Van Lant
Hi,
I had the opportunity to try a pair of knit gloves today that have the pads on
them so you can still use your smart phone while in gloves. Seems very nice
heading into winter. While I was successfully able to navigate around the
screen for typing, I realized that this particular glove only had the special
pads on the thumb, pointer and, I think, middle finger. So, , none of my
three-finger gestures would work. Have you seen gloves out there that have the
pads on all fingers?

Hi Mary,

Radium is working fine here with iOS 11. I would suggest that your friend try
touching various parts of the screen, rather than just flicking. I can flick to
the More Options and Find More Stations buttons, but with some apps, you can
touch things that you can't flick to.

HTH,
Anna

Your friend is right.
It goes in a loop when you flick right after the more options button it just
goes back to the station that is selected.
If you slide your finger down the screen, you will find the other stations.

Re: iOS 11, voiceover, iPad and Bluetooth keyboard

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Yes, I have and have read his book. But as you know, the book was totally
silent about all of the issues with the new braille. So I thought it would be
worth it to ask about experiences here on the list from people who have used
the publicly available release version.

64 bit radium not working after upgrade

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hello all. This is the verbatim text of an email I got from a friend of mine
who is very upset that he has lost the usability of Radium after upgrade. As
you'll see in the text, radium was working fine for him, that is the 64-bit new
version, until he upgraded. Now, he's out of luck. Does anybody have any advice
here? Here is the text.

I’ve installed IOS 11.01 on my iPad Mini and my Iphone 6@-plus and Radium does
not work correctly on either device. The 64-bit version of Radium worked great
on my Iphone running IOS 10.3. I updated my iOS and brought up Radium. Now when
I try to flick right to get to my stations I can’t get past my first selected
station, playback toggle, share song or station and look for additional
stations. No matter how often I flick right I can’t get Radium to move off the
initial station and those other choices.
Sometimes it goes to another station, but randomly.
I uninstalled radium, but all the app store will let me do when I search for
Radium is to re-download the app. When I do that and open it has my same
stations and I get the same problem. I’ve uninstalled and re-downloaded twice
with no luck.
The same exact thing happens on my iPad mini. No matter how often I flick right
I can’t get past my initially selected station.
Any help would be most appreciated.
I’m really regretting having upgraded. How do I roll back?
Thanks.

I'm sending this message out to a few lists, because I am interested to know
about folks experiences with iOS 11 and iPads. I'm interested in the new
functionality that iOS 11 brings with multiple applications open, dragging
and dropping at Cetera. I know it is early days, but I'm just wondering if
there is usable efficient functionality here, especially if you're going to
use a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPad.

Setting up keyboard short cuts on my iPHONE 8

2017-09-27 Thread Candy Lowe
Hello everyone,
I just got an IPhone 8 today. I have it set up, but, it appears that there is
no way to set up keyboard short cuts like I had on my 6. They still show the
short cut with double space for a period, but, no place to create new ones.

I use the Logitech K480 a lot. I love it!
The trick is once it is paired. lock the phone, then turn the keyboard off.
When you want to use it again, unlock the phone, then turn on the keyboard.
Since I've followed that pattern, I have not had the double letter typing.

RE: Question about face ID

2017-09-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would recommend that once the phone is in stores and if you have an Apple
Store nearby that you check it out and see if they would let you try and set it
up.
You may say that this is not for you, but I think Apple is pretty set on
pushing Face Id as the next tech for unlocking devices, I'd be surprised if
this didn't also come to Mac computers sooner or later and of course to iPads.
This means that we may still have phones with Touch Id for another couple of
years, but after that you may just not have a choice.
Realistically that of course means you might be OK for the next 5 or 6 years if
you get one of the last Touch Id phones in say 2 years and keep it for 3 years,
but I do think eventually this will go away.

Regards,
Sieghard

Thank you for answering my question. I did not see that earlier!. I have been
totally blind from birth, and, have trouble looking directly at people. iPhone
axing is probably not a good one for me to have. I use the thumb print and ID
code for the security.

Hi,
I don't know why it would be so hard for a blind person to look at their iPhone
to unlock it. Not sure why this would be an issue.

Hello,

Apparently it's possible to turn off the feature that requires someone to be
looking directly at the phone to unlock it, and this feature is turned off by
default if you have VoiceOver on while setting up your phone.

Best,

Re: Question about face ID

2017-09-27 Thread Michael Irons
Thank you for answering my question. I did not see that earlier!. I have been
totally blind from birth, and, have trouble looking directly at people. iPhone
axing is probably not a good one for me to have. I use the thumb print and ID
code for the security.

RE: Question about face ID

2017-09-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Michael,

This has been discussed and explained, but there has been more traffic lately
so you maybe didn't see it.
Face Id will be perfectly accessible for the blind according to Apple. It
appears Apple has thought about this and specifically come up with a solution.
Normally Face Id requires the user's "attention" which means they have to look
at the phone, Face Id would for example not work if somebody pointed the phone
at your face while asleep, unconscious or if you are looking the other way.
This "attention" setting can, however, be disabled in Accessibility Settings.
If you set up Face Id with Voiceover it is in fact disabled by default so that
if you point the phone at your face but you don't look directly at the phone or
maybe your eyes are closed Face Id would still work.
Apple does explain that this of course makes Face Id a bit less secure since
somebody could in fact unlock your phone if they have your phone and if you
were asleep or if they knocked you out. Of course if they knocked you out they
could also put your finger on the Touch Id and I'm pretty sure most people use
either their thumb or index finger for this so there is a pretty good chance
this would work just fine.
If you are visually impaired or a blind person who doesn't often keep their
eyes closed and can focus then I also don't think having "attention" enabled
will be a big problem. I am not buying an iPhone X, but I will be in Calgary
when they are released and I do plan to stop by an Apple Store to check it out
and hopefully it will be possible for me to set up Face Id and test it. I have
prosthetic eyes, but most people would ever know unless they observe closely
and I am quite good at looking at people when they talk to me so I have a
feeling Face Id would work just fine with attention enabled, I definitely don't
think I have problems focussing on my iPhone's screen from a foot away.

Sieghard

RE: appStore, IOS 11, and reviewing an app

2017-09-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I really like the new app store, just would like the app version and size to be
announced again by Voiceover. I did write Apple Accessibility about that and
got the typical answer that they will pass it on.
As for reviews, I just went into Updates and tapped on Skype which had an
update a few days ago.
Towards the bottom (easier if you start from the bottom, touch the Today tab
and then swipe left a few times) there is a "Write a Review" button. It is
clearly labelled and when I tapped it I was presented with a screen where I
could select how many stars I was going to give (it's one of those controls
like in some apps for date where you simply swipe up and I tgoes to 1 Star, 2
Stars, 3 Stars etc.
Then there was an edit field for "Title" where you can give your review a brief
caption, then there is another edit field for writing your review.
Both fields presented no problems, a double tap put editing focus there, I then
did a 2-finger double tap and dictated both a title and a review and at the top
right is the "Send" button.

Sieghard

Hi there,

I found a place after the review statistics of an app where it says “tap to
rate”. Here you can get chance to adjust star level etc.

Have not tried to actually review.

Hello,

Apparently it's possible to turn off the feature that requires someone to be
looking directly at the phone to unlock it, and this feature is turned off by
default if you have VoiceOver on while setting up your phone.

Hi. I upgraded from an original series watch to a series 3. My original watch
seemed to get slower and clunkier with each OS upgrade. When I put OS 4 on it,
it was really unbearable at least in my opinion.

My new series 3 GPS model now is like night and day. Everything is nice and
snappy and very responsive. My original watch was so sluggish with OS 4 that I
actually stopped using it until I received my series 3.

If you can swing it, go for it because the difference is huge. I think that if
I had had a series 2, I probably would not have upgraded but the original is
now sorely underpowered.

Apple posts new security documents about Face ID

2017-09-27 Thread Maria Reyes
Apple has taken steps to educate potential owners of the iPhone X about Face ID
ahead of its release on Nov. 3, releasing a white paper alongside a support
document that explains how the biometric authentication technology works to
keep the user's data secure.

Found within Apple's revamped privacy pages, the Face ID Security white paper
gives an overview of how Face ID operates, as well as how users can expect to
use the authentication system. Introduced as a replacement for Touch ID in the
iPhone X, the six-page document is an attempt to convince wary potential users
that Face ID is at least as secure as the well-known Touch ID, and that they
have little to fear from the security change.

Along with the white paper, Apple has updated its support pages to include a
briefer explanation of the technology and its security.

The overview of FaceID explains simply that the TrueDepth camera system
accurately maps the geometry of the user's face using "advanced technologies,"
which consists of an infrared camera, a 7-megapixel camera sensor, a flood
illuminator, and a dot projector. Confirming the attention of the user by
detecting the direction of their gaze, Face ID then uses neural networks to
match and prevent spoofing attempts to unlock the phone, with the system
automatically adapting to changes in the user's appearance over time.

A passcode must be set up on the iPhone X before the user can set up Face ID,
with Apple advising the passcode can be made longer and more complex as it will
not need to be entered frequently. The passcode will still be requested from
users in a number of circumstances, including when the iPhone X has just been
turned on or restarted, hasn't been unlocked for more than 48 hours, the device
has been remotely locked, after five failed Face ID unlock attempts, and after
initiating an Emergency SOS mode.

Users will also be required to use the passcode if it hasn't been used to
unlock the iPhone X in the last 156 hours and if Face ID has not been used
successfully in the last four hours. When Face ID is enabled, the device will
immediately lock when the side button is pressed or when the device goes to
sleep, with either the facial match or passcode required to wake the iPhone X
each time.

As raised during the September unveiling, it is claimed Face ID has a one in a
million chance of being unlocked by a random person looking at the iPhone X,
compared to a 1 in 50 thousand false positive chance for Touch ID. The chance
of a false match does increase for twins and siblings who bear a similar
appearance to one another, as well as for children under the age of 13, which
Apple claims is due to the possibility that distinct facial features may not
have fully developed, with Apple suggesting to keep using the passcode to
authenticate in these cases.

Going into more detail about how the system works, the document explains over
30,000 infrared dots are projected onto the user's face and are read by the
TrueDepth camera, with a depth map and 2D infrared image combined to create a
sequence of images and depth maps that are digitally signed and stored in the
Secure Enclave. For extra security, this sequence is randomized, with the
infrared dot pattern also given a device-specific randomization.

A section of the A11 Bionic chip's neural engine, protected within the Secure
Enclave, turns this data into a mathematical representation, which is then
compared to the enrolled facial data, itself a mathematical representation of
the user's face captured during enrollment. An additional neural network,
trained to detect spoofing attempts, is also used in the facial data analysis.

There are three types of Face ID data that are encrypted and stored in the
Secure Enclave, data which Apple insists does not leave the device, is not sent
to Apple, and is not included in device backups. The infrared images and
mathematical representations created during enrollment are stored alongside any
other mathematical representations calculated during some unlock attempts, if
Face ID deems them useful to improve future matching attempts.

This extra stored data is useful to the iPhone X as it provides more reference
points for Face ID to authenticate the user, allowing it also to take into
account both temporary and longer-term changes in their appearance.

As the neural networks may update over the device's ownership, the iPhone X
will be able to automatically run any stored images within the Secure Enclave
through the updated neural network. To minimize the amount of background
information, the enrollment images are cropped to just the user's face. Face
images captured during unlocking are not saved, and are immediately discarded
once the mathematical representation has been calculated.

As for daily use outside of unlocking the iPhone X, Apple includes sections
explaining how Face ID works with Apple Pay and with third-party apps.

PDF improvements in iOS 11?

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
There were supposed to be improvements for both Mac and iOS devices with the
latest upgrades of the operating systems. This has to do with voiceover reading
PDF files which has been pretty miserable frankly. I believe I saw a note on
Apple Vis saying that there weren't improvements in iOS 11. Have any of you
noticed improvements?

Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone or iPad

2017-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
I know there have been issues in the past with funky Bluetooth keyboard
connectivity with I-devices. I wonder if that situation has become more stable,
and has anyone on any of these lists use the logitech K4 80 keyboard with their
i-device? It is appealing because you can use it with three devices at the same
time, such as a Mac or a Kindle or a PC etc.

RE: Bug pasting text in mail reply ios 11

2017-09-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mario,

A part from the braille display and typing issues which will probably be
worked out in time I find that iOS 11 is a much better and more stabil upgrade
than iOS 10 or for that matter iOS 9 was.
That rotor delete thing in mail is as per Apple the new behaviour and meant to
be that way although I still think it is a bit inconsistent, if this is what
they now do I know I'll get used to it pretty quick and I'll just do another
flick after a double tap to put the rotor back on "Activate".
The new way to move apps is awesome and personally I like it that Voiceover
doesn't say "Actions available" each time you touch an app on the home screen.
We all used the double tap and hold before so I'm sure everybody can get used
to using it again for activating edit/moving mode.
I also love the new screen recorder feature, that alone is almost worth the
upgrade as it makes it so easy to document a bug if you want to send something
to a developer for consideration.
Auto call answer is also nice, it's not something I would set up permanently,
but there are times like for example you are maybe cooking or doing something
where you will have your phone nearby, maybe you are wearing a headset already
and if somebody calls you don't even have to touch your phone.
The 3-finger triple tap for getting some information about pictures works and
I'm sure will get better and I think all in all this is a very nicely done
upgrade.
I'm not a braille user, but to mention braille again, Jonathan Mosen has long
been lobbying for better braille support and while there are some bugs,
apparently he is saying Apple is really getting braille in this update with
respect to how they handle contractions and so on so I think once the bugs are
worked out braille users will really enjoy that and of course let's not forget
SIRI. The new voice is awesome and for deaf-blind users or people with an
accent the ability to ask SIRI a question by typing it is a total game-changer.
I honestly don't see any regression in Apple's commitment to accessibility,
they continue to put a great deal of thought into how to make new devices and
features accessible and for the most part are doing a pretty good job.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi.
This issue comes from the ios 10.
It's not an issue of ios 11.
But yes, ios 11 is a disaster update to the blind.
Apple continues to ignore the blind in the cycle of betas.
It's my opinion.
IOS 10 is the best way.
and is that I follow without never have diverted to ios 11.
Thank god that high sierra was much more peaceful.
my iMac is faster, stable, and the VO was happy with that.
I'm less satisfied by the description of images have never worked for me.
but overall, I'm happy.

Perhaps these minor adjustments are improved in the future.
cheers.

Hi,

Interesting. I did not notice this problem in iOS 10.
No, I did not double-tap on the "to" field.
I paste and apparently there's nothing in the message body but then, when I try
to send, I get error because first few words get pasted into the "to" field.

Maybe it's not on all devices

I let apple know anyway.

Thanks,

RE: Is anyone using Watch OS 4 with a first generation Qpplewatch?

2017-09-27 Thread Rick Alfaro
There is no trade-in program as far as I’m aware. I had to buy the new series 3
watch but I got the model without LTE which saved me a few bucks. I still have
my old apple watch.

RE: watchOS 4: How to customize and use the new Siri face on Apple Watch

2017-09-27 Thread Rick Alfaro
VoiceOver works fine but there is one oddity with this face that Jonathan
discovered in his unboxing podcast. If VO is running, all Siri responses are
made using the regular Samantha voice you are used to on the watch. If VO is
turned off however, Siri responds with the new Siri Female voice which is much
more pleasant to listen to. I don't know if this is due to some sort of
technical restriction, a bug, or just an oversight but I did report it to Apple
accessibility.

Subject: watchOS 4: How to customize and use the new Siri face on Apple Watch

9to5Mac - Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 8:51 AM watchOS 4: How to customize
and use the new Siri face on Apple Watch

watchOS 4 introduces a new Siri watch face on Apple Watch that intelligently
updates to show you relevant content throughout the day. The Siri watch face
pulls data from 14 different sources by default, but customizing these sources
can help remove information from the timeline that you don't need and make the
watch face more useful.

The Siri watch face includes a digital clock with a flashing second indicator
(but no option for seconds), two customizable complications including a new
Siri complication, and two dynamic tiles of information.
These tiles will update depending on time of day, date, current events,
activity progress, and more.
Like other watch faces, swiping down from the top reveals Notification Center
and swiping up from the bottom opens Control Center. Spin the Digital Crown on
Siri face, however, and the timeline becomes a vertical carousel of information.
Rotating the Digital Crown downward shows Recent and All-Day tiles like
temperature highs and lows and Now Playing cards. The tap minimizes to the top
right corner with a light background indicating that it's a button you can tap
to return to the main view. You can also click the Digital Crown to leave the
timeline and go back to the starting point.
Rotating the Digital Crown upward shows you tiles for Up Next and Tomorrow.
Siri face previews the first Up Next tiles by default, and scrolling here
reveals more. Rolling the Digital Crown lets you move around the timeline too.

While these tiles change dynamically, Siri face features two complications that
you set. My default, the new Siri complication is located in the top left (this
is the only face with this complication) and the date is located above the
digital clock.
Tapping the Siri complication invokes the voice assistant just like holding the
Digital Crown or saying 'Hey Siri' when the display is on. It's a visually
satisfying complication, but you may get more use out of Siri face if you put
something else here since you can invoke Siri with voice or a click.

Press the Siri face firmly, then select Customize to choose between Activity,
Alarm, Battery, Breathe, Calendar, Date, Find My Friends, Heart Rate, Home,
Mail, Maps, Messages, Moon Phase, Music, News, Phone, Reminders, Remote, Siri,
Stocks, Stopwatch, Sunrise/Sunset, Timer, Weather, Weather Conditions, Workout,
World Clock, and third-party complications.
The top right complication is a bit smaller and can be set to Alarm, Battery,
Calendar, Date, Heart Rate, News, Stocks, Stopwatch, Sunrise/Sunset, Timer,
Weather, World Clock, and third-party complications.

After you personalize the two complications, consider customizing which data
sources Siri face uses. You can't do this from the Apple Watch, however, so
you'll need your iPhone. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, look for the Siri
face in the My Faces section (or add it from the Face Gallery tab at the
bottom), then tap the Siri face to reveal customization options.
>From here you can set both complications just like on the Apple Watch, and a
>Data Sources list lets you toggle apps that appear on Siri face on and off.
watchOS 4.0 includes 14 data sources: Alarms, Breathe, Calendar, Home, News,
Now Playing, Photos, Reminders, Stocks, Stopwatch, Timer, Wallet, Weather, and
Workout.
You can't use third-party apps as data sources (yet), but you can disable data
sources that aren't useful for you and declutter the Siri face timeline. For
example, I toggle off Photos, News, and Stocks to avoid seeing poorly chosen
snapshots, the latest Trump headline, and stock market changes on my Siri face.
This cleans up the experience for me and only surfaces useful tiles like
HomeKit scene triggers, exercise

Have not tried to actually review.

appStore, IOS 11, and reviewing an app

2017-09-27 Thread Chip Orange
Hi all,

Has anyone tried to write a review of an app on the AppStore which comes
with IOS 11?

I tried just now and simply could not find the option to do so. How
disappointing, but looks like Apple has reorganized the AppStore in some way
where accessibility took a back seat.

Thanks for any how to tips on being able to do this.

Chip

RE: Apple Pay with IOS 11

2017-09-27 Thread Tom Rash
I was asking on the niphone list about using Apple Pay to pay individuals. It
is not out yet. Supposed to be this fall. I’m forwarding the email where
someone mentioned that you could use Square Cash Pay. Just for future
reference. Don’t care how you do it this time, but thought you might be
interested.

RE: Comment: Why the iPhone X appears to be power-hungry despite more efficient OLED screen

2017-09-27 Thread Chip Orange
The OLED display of the X should then allow blind users to make use of the
screen curtain feature to actually save battery life (as many have been asking
about since the beginning).

Comment: Why the iPhone X appears to be power-hungry despite more efficient
OLED screen

9to5Mac / Ben Lovejoy

We noted earlier a Chinese regulatory filing that appears to confirm an earlier
report that the iPhone X will come
equipped with 3GB RAM
 . That same
filing also contains another interesting number: the apparent battery capacity.

Serial leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer tweeted
  the image showing a
battery capacity of 2716mAh – even higher than the 2691mAh battery found
  in the iPhone 8
Plus, with its far less power-efficient LCD screen …

LCD screens use a backlight to light up the entire display area. Even an area
of the screen that is solid black gets the same amount of light, it is simply
blocked by the black LCD pixels. OLED, in contrast, lights individual pixels,
without any backlight required. A black area of the screen therefore uses no
power.

It’s difficult to find true like-for-like comparisons, as manufacturers
typically take advantage of the power efficiency of OLED by making their
displays brighter. But a little Googling suggests that an OLED screen ought to
use around two-thirds the power of an equivalent LCD one.

The iPhone X does, of course, have a somewhat larger display than the iPhone 8
Plus, at 5.8 inches rather than 5.5 inches, but 5% more display area is
relatively trivial compared to the power savings of OLED.

This suggests, then, that there’s other technology in the iPhone which requires
significantly more power than less advanced models.

One obvious candidate is the optical image stabilization system. While the
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have OIS on one camera, the iPhone X has it on both
cameras. OIS has motors that physically move the lens to counteract hand
movements, and this requires significant amounts of power.

A second likely suspect is the TrueDepth camera system. This is used not just
for face recognition for unlocking the phone and authorizing Apple Pay
transactions, but also for the new Animoji feature and the Portrait Mode when
used with the front-facing camera.

The TrueDepth camera requires an infrared ‘flood illuminator.’ Although it
doesn’t use visible light, this will use power levels not massively dissimilar
to a visible-light flash, but will be operating for much longer periods.

So even with a larger battery and much more power-efficient display, Apple
clearly finds that the extra features on the iPhone X eat significant amounts
of power. It cites 12 hours of Internet use and 13 hours of video playback
against an hour more of each for the iPhone 8 Plus.

When it comes to recharging your iPhone X or iPhone 8 battery, you’ll have the
choice of fast-charging via wire

or wireless charging with a pad
 , wireless
charging without a pad
  or
using furniture
 .
Manufacturers of Qi chargers have wasted in no time in adding iPhone
compatibility to their product descriptions.

Oi all.
Before I write apple accessibility... can someone please confirm these issues
I'm having?
I got my iPhone 8. Upgraded to the newest version of IOS yesterday. I
experience the following:
1. Braille display still lags. Cursor moves to random places when typing on my
focus. Words show up in the message out of order.
2. VO crashes randomly. Screen curtain turns on (though it's always on)
3. Hey Siri does not work. It is on in setings.
I just wanted to confirm these bugs before I write apple. The braille is most
frustrating. I can't even use my display right now because it's so quarky.
I am very disappointed in this release having so many bugs.

Thank you to anyone who respons.
Jen

Re: Bug pasting text in mail reply ios 11

2017-09-27 Thread Mário Navarro

Perhaps these minor adjustments are improved in the future.
cheers.

Hi Iona,

I can sort of reproduce this, but not in the same way as you described. What seems to be
happening after I tap on Reply is that Voiceover starts saying message body, text field
is editing or something along those lines, but then it puts focus on the "To"
line, but it does not go into editing mode.
If I don't do anything at all after tapping on reply and then select Edit from
the rotor and paste nothing is pasted at all anywhere, I have to actually swipe
to the message body field but at that point I can just paste, I don't have to
double tap any more or anything like that to put focus there.
I think maybe what happened is that because focus is on the To field maybe you
double tapped to make sure the insertion point is at the top and then you would
of course have started editing mode for the To field and if then you paste the
content would have gone there. I tried this several times with email addresses
in two different email accounts and for me on my 6S Plus with iOS 11.01 what I
described above was consistent.
Now, if I tap reply and Voiceover is on the To field but not in editing mode
and I now start typing aything it does go instantly into the message body
field, in fact if I tap the Delete button which doesn't really do anything
since I'm already at the top of the document and then paste my clipboard
content is pasted into the message body.
I would agree that this is a small bug as focus should be in the message body
field and not on the To field, but if all you want to do is paste something in
a reply and then send it without first writing anything I suggest you try the
work around and tap the delete button before you paste or you can of course
flick a few times until you get to the message body. Maybe you can try, Iona,
to follow these steps and see if that works for you, there is of course a
chance that it might be different on different phone models, but this is
consistent for me.

Sieghard

Hi

I'm having a problem with the mail app if I try to paste a text in the message
body of a reply. If you also find this, consider reporting to apple please.

Here are steps to reproduce bug:
1. Copy a text to clipboard.
2. open a mail message you received.
3. Start reply procedure.
4. Note that, although edit mode is on in message body field as expected, vo cursor is
now on the "to" field. It's not in edit mode.

5. Paste the text.
6. The text gets placed in the "to" field instead of the message body.

Workaround is to make sure vo cursor is on the message body edit field before
pasting.

Hope you can fix this inconvenience,

Ioana

watchOS 4: How to customize and use the new Siri face on Apple Watch

watchOS 4 introduces a new Siri watch face on Apple Watch that intelligently
updates to show you relevant content throughout the day. The Siri watch face
pulls data from 14 different sources by default, but customizing these
sources can help remove information from the timeline that you don't need
and make the watch face more useful.

The Siri watch face includes a digital clock with a flashing second
indicator (but no option for seconds), two customizable complications
including a new Siri complication, and two dynamic tiles of information.
These tiles will update depending on time of day, date, current events,
activity progress, and more.
Like other watch faces, swiping down from the top reveals Notification
Center and swiping up from the bottom opens Control Center. Spin the Digital
Crown on Siri face, however, and the timeline becomes a vertical carousel of
information.
Rotating the Digital Crown downward shows Recent and All-Day tiles like
temperature highs and lows and Now Playing cards. The tap minimizes to the
top right corner with a light background indicating that it's a button you
can tap to return to the main view. You can also click the Digital Crown to
leave the timeline and go back to the starting point.
Rotating the Digital Crown upward shows you tiles for Up Next and Tomorrow.
Siri face previews the first Up Next tiles by default, and scrolling here
reveals more. Rolling the Digital Crown lets you move around the timeline
too.

While these tiles change dynamically, Siri face features two complications
that you set. My default, the new Siri complication is located in the top
left (this is the only face with this complication) and the date is located
above the digital clock.
Tapping the Siri complication invokes the voice assistant just like holding
the Digital Crown or saying 'Hey Siri' when the display is on. It's a
visually satisfying complication, but you may get more use out of Siri face
if you put something else here since you can invoke Siri with voice or a
click.

Press the Siri face firmly, then select Customize to choose between
Activity, Alarm, Battery, Breathe, Calendar, Date, Find My Friends, Heart
Rate, Home, Mail, Maps, Messages, Moon Phase, Music, News, Phone, Reminders,
Remote, Siri, Stocks, Stopwatch, Sunrise/Sunset, Timer, Weather, Weather
Conditions, Workout, World Clock, and third-party complications.
The top right complication is a bit smaller and can be set to Alarm,
Battery, Calendar, Date, Heart Rate, News, Stocks, Stopwatch,
Sunrise/Sunset, Timer, Weather, World Clock, and third-party complications.

After you personalize the two complications, consider customizing which data
sources Siri face uses. You can't do this from the Apple Watch, however, so
you'll need your iPhone. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, look for the
Siri face in the My Faces section (or add it from the Face Gallery tab at
the bottom), then tap the Siri face to reveal customization options.
>From here you can set both complications just like on the Apple Watch, and a
Data Sources list lets you toggle apps that appear on Siri face on and off.
watchOS 4.0 includes 14 data sources: Alarms, Breathe, Calendar, Home, News,
Now Playing, Photos, Reminders, Stocks, Stopwatch, Timer, Wallet, Weather,
and Workout.
You can't use third-party apps as data sources (yet), but you can disable
data sources that aren't useful for you and declutter the Siri face
timeline. For example, I toggle off Photos, News, and Stocks to avoid seeing
poorly chosen snapshots, the latest Trump headline, and stock market changes
on my Siri face.
This cleans up the experience for me and only surfaces useful tiles like
HomeKit scene triggers, exercise recommendations, and upcoming Wallet
passes.
My 'Good morning' scene is displayed when I wake up, and the 'Good night'
scene is shown in the evening. Tapping these launches the Home app and shows
the specific scene in the list, then tapping the scene activates it (which
turns my lights off, locks the front door, etc.).

Siri face is a great exercise coach, too, as it will recommend the exact
amount of walking you should do to complete your Move goal at the end of the
day. Siri face also shows the Now Playing card for music and podcasts played
on the iPhone (or music on the watch), upcoming alarms and reminders appear
in the timeline as well as calendar events, and Wallet passes are surfaced
to the top when needed just like the lock screen on the iPhone.
You'll also see currently active Timers appear dynamically, sunrise and

This has been an issue for a long, long, long, long time... and it only
seems to happen with some phones, and generally when the mute switch is on.
Incredibly annoying... I do hope it gets fixed eventually.

Most dating apps seem not very accessible, due to swiping issues and

Here's hoping it's enabled soon via a software update.

RE: Bug pasting text in mail reply ios 11

2017-09-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Iona,

I can sort of reproduce this, but not in the same way as you described. What
seems to be happening after I tap on Reply is that Voiceover starts saying
message body, text field is editing or something along those lines, but then it
puts focus on the "To" line, but it does not go into editing mode.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Bug pasting text in mail reply ios 11

Hi

I'm having a problem with the mail app if I try to paste a text in the message
body of a reply. If you also find this, consider reporting to apple please.

Here are steps to reproduce bug:
1. Copy a text to clipboard.
2. open a mail message you received.
3. Start reply procedure.
4. Note that, although edit mode is on in message body field as expected, vo
cursor is now on the "to" field. It's not in edit mode.

5. Paste the text.
6. The text gets placed in the "to" field instead of the message body.

Workaround is to make sure vo cursor is on the message body edit field before
pasting.

Hope you can fix this inconvenience,

Ioana

Re: Is anyone using Watch OS 4 with a first generation Qpplewatch?

Hi all,

I got my series 3 watch yesterday, and it responds much, much faster than the
original watch. You can certainly run Watch OS 4 on the first generation watch,
but you spend a lot of time waiting for it to respond.

Anyone else having these issues? IOS 11.01

2017-09-27 Thread Jenifer Barr

Jen

My understanding is that Apple is yet to implement iOS to iOS payments
via Apple Pay.

Here's hoping it's enabled soon via a software update.

In iOS 11, The iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug has Been Resolved

2017-09-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

With the release of iOS 11, I received a message from Apple indicating that
they had resolved the iOS iBook VoiceOver continuous reading bug, described
in my original bug report, and that they wanted me to confirm this.

I am delighted to report that the bug, as I originally described in iOS 10,
has been successfully resolved with the release of iOS 11.

I have already sent my congratulations and appreciation to Apple and wanted
to update you on this issue.

I will paste in my previous post on this in order to refresh your memory on
this matter.

Here's one for the team, eh?

Mark

Subject: Even in iOS 10.1 the iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug
Continues

Hello Everyone,

A while ago I posted to the groups describing what I consider to be an iBook
VoiceOver continuous reading bug given that the behavior did not occur in
previous versions of iOS.

After posting, a couple of iOS beta testers reported that this issue had
been resolved in iOS 10.1.

Well, as you can guess, I updated to iOS 10.1 and the bug, in my opinion,
persists.

I am going to paste in a modified copy of my previous post on this and see
if any of you can reproduce it in iOS 10.1.

[ORIGINAL TEXT]
My preferred method for reading iOS iBook titles is to use the two-finger,
swipe-down VoiceOver gesture, in order to initiate continuous reading of the
text. Please note that I am not referring to the Speak Screen accessibility
feature.

In short, my display is set to automatically lock after 30 seconds. In the
previous versions of IOS, performing a 2-finger swipe down, in an iBook
title, would suspend the auto-lock and allow for continuous reading of the
text. This does not appear to be the case, any longer.

This is to say, in certain titles, such as those containing imbedded
hyperlinks, the auto-lock engages, cancelling the continuous reading mode.

I first discovered this, last night, while reading the Apple TV User Guide.
The same phenomenon occurred when I tested my hypothesis with the iPhone
User Guide for iOS 10 and iPhone User Guide for iOS 9.3.

At first, I thought it was some kind of issue with titles produced by Apple
but I tested a recently published (non Apple) title, that has a web link
imbedded in the text, and, just as with the Apple manuals, after less than 1
minute, the screen locked and reading ceased.

It should be noted, that the hyperlinks that exist in the Table of Contents,
used to jump to a specific area, does not cause interruption to the
continuous reading feature. I say this because titles in my Library,
containing only such links, read as expected.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
>From Settings/General/Display and Brightness, set Auto Lock to 30 seconds.

2.
In iBook, open the Apple TV User Guide and, from the table of contents,
select Home Sharing; or, open the iPhone User Guide for iOS 10 and, from the
table of contents, select Basics.

3.
Once the desired page is displayed, perform the two-finger swipe-down
VoiceOver gesture to initiate continuous reading.

As I said, in my testing, each time either an imbedded hyperlink or heading
is encountered, a short time later, the screen will lock and reading will
stop.

Please confirm if this occurs during your testing.

I would like to note that, this problem does not occur when using the Speak
Screen accessibility feature. While certainly useful in some instances, the
Speak Screen feature is not my preferred method for reading iBook titles.
