Re: Xfinity mobile question

2017-10-23 Thread Mary Otten
Well, I'm not sure. We used to have Xfinity cable, and one of the side benefits
of that was access to Xfinity Wi-Fi when available. You did have to have
Xfinity password etc. to get into the app for the Wi-Fi. But many of the sites
were not secure, and they told you that when you login. So I would be very
careful. I would at least one a lot more explanation.

As I understand it, it only uses Xfinity wifi and that is secure since you

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this because Apple compatibility is mentioned in the article.

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET

CNET How To - Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:05 AM
5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET
With Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft has added a handful of new
features and tweaks to its Edge browser. I doubt they will be enough to pry
you away from your browser of choice, but the Edge browser continues to
trend in the right direction. Here are the five big improvements Microsoft
has made to Edge with its most recent Windows update.
Pin pages to the taskbar
Not seen since Windows 8, you can once again pin websites to the taskbar. To
do so, click the triple-dot button along the Edge window's right edge and
choose Pin this page to the taskbar.

You can put your favorite websites on your taskbar for fast access.
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
True full-screen mode
Edge finally has a true, full-screen mode where you lose the browser's menus
and tabs at the top. Hit F11 to toggle in and out of full-screen mode or
click the triple-dot button and then click the diagonal double-arrow button
to the right of the zoom controls.
Better integration with your phone

Edge promises to let you start an article on your phone and then pick it
where you left off on your PC, but you'll need to use a preview version of
Edge for iOS or Android or the Cortana app for iOS or Android to try it out.
And you'll need to connect your phone to your PC in the new Phone section of
the Settings app, which you'll find on the main page of Settings. I tried it
out by installing the Cortana app on my iPhone ($849.00 at Apple). I opened
a news article and tapped the blue button to continue reading on my PC. It
worked seamlessly; as soon as I tapped the button on my phone, a new tab
opened on Edge on my PC.

Heading home? Send the article you are reading on your phone to your PC.
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
Better bookmarking
Click the star button in Edge (or hit Control-D) and you'll see Edge's
bookmark menu got a design refresh and better illustrates the folder
hierarchy for your favorites, making it quicker and easier to find a folder
to plop a new favorite. And on the Favorites hub itself, you'll find two new
items on the right-click menu -- Sort by name and Edit URL. The former lets
you arrange a list of favorites alphabetically and the latter lets you
quickly edit a favorite's URL.
Better PDF and eBook reader
Microsoft added a few tools to make Edge more capable with PDFs and eBooks
for touchscren PCs. With PDFs, you can now click the Add Notes button to the
right of the URL bar to ink on the PDF, from signing your name and
highlighting lines to adding comments and copying text. It's particularly
useful for signing documents -- no longer will you need to add a weird
electronic signature or, worse, print, sign and scan a PDF in order to send
back a signed copy.

You can add highlights and notes to eBooks as well as PDF files.
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
For eBooks, students (and habitual notetakers) will rejoice at being able to
mark up eBooks as you read them. Just highlight some text and a small menu
will appear that lets you highlight the text, underline it, add a comment,
copy it or open a Cortana panel along the Edge window's right edge without
leaving the page you are on.

RE: keyboard issue after apparent forced upgrade

2017-10-23 Thread Connie Mohney
Hello Ray,

I have an amazon basics keyboard too. I’m getting the same behaviors with mine
as you are. Here are some work arounds. To get to the app switcher press
control option and the letter h that will take you away from the app. It will
still be open but just in the back ground. If you want to be able to close the
app press the control option and hold them down. Then you want to press the h
twice quickly while you are holding those keys down. It will say app switcher
then you are given the option to close the app. If you want to delete e-mail
messages, you have to have your roder set to actions. Then you can up arrow to
delete the e-mail message. Now, if you were referring to iMessages you have to
have the roder on actions press the up arrow the first thing you are going to
hear is hide alerts. Up arrow again and it will say delete. You double tap
there and it will say delete null. As soon as you close the app the messages
will be gone. I don’t think it is the amazon basics keyboard because I use a
smaller keyboard when I’m away from home and get those same behaviors. So, I’m
hoping these behaviors will get fixed with another update.

HTH.

Subject: keyboard issue after apparent forced upgrade

I have an amazon basics keyboard connected to the phone. Under Bluetooth
settings, it Identifies as a KT1281. After the upgrade, I no longer have a
number of the f key functions such as f1 twice to get to the app switcher. Is
this a bug or is this keyboard no longer compatible with IOS11? Also how do I
go about deleting messages from the messages app without having to stand on my
head? When I select delete and invoke it with either a finger or the keyboard,
The message does not appear to delete. What might I be missing or, is this also
a bug?

The app itself is FREE, but to get the full functionality of the app there is a
monthly charge. Without the monthly subscription the app is mostly useless.
There are other apps that have similar features that are Free & have no monthly

iTunes Radio Stations

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Is it still possible to create new iTunes radio stations if one does not
subscribe to Apple Music?

I attempted to create a new radio station in the iOS 11 Music app, but was
unable to do so without first agreeing to subscribe to the Apple Music
streaming service.

All replies welcomed.

Need Tips for Attaching Photo to Message and Getting it to Stay There when Msg is Delivered

2017-10-23 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I'm helping my Mom with her phone again. I've taught her to use the
Attach Media option to take a photo while in the Messages app. I
understand, in a general sense, that you can hit Send and that the
photo should stay with the text message--I've seen texts from my Sis
with photos attached, so made the assumption from there.

But when Mom does it, I get the text and no pic.

I only have light perception and don't use the camera, so know almost
nothing about this.

What am I missing? She says some message comes up about effects. What
does that mean, and how do I help her?

Thanks,
Dani

A lot of that Wi-Fi might not be secure. Do you really want to do that? It

RE: changing the way received signal is displayed

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Ray,

According to the web, it is no longer possible to place iOS 11.x on iPHone into
permanent Field Test mode. Field Test mode is the state in which iPhone needs
to be, in order to display signal strength in numbers rather than bars.

I submitted a feature request to Apple, regarding this but whether or not they
will restore this functionality is anyone's guess. If they do, I suspect it
will take years.

Just one more reason why, so far, I'm glad I have not yet updated to iOS 11.

Join Me in Reporting Twitter for iOS v7.10 Moments and TrendsForYou VoiceOver Accessibility Bug

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
list.

As of the latest Twitter for iOS app, v7.10, released today, TwitterMoments
and TrendsForYou are not VoiceOver accessible.

Please join me in reporting this issue.

The following is the review I posted in the App Store. You are welcome to
use any or all of it in your feedback to Twitter:

[BEGIN REVIEW]
SUBJECT:
Request to Fix TwitterMoments and TrendsForYou VoiceOver Accessibility Bug

Unlike in previous versions of the app, in the latest release of Twitter for
iOS (v7.10), VoiceOver, Apple's software screen reading solution for the
blind and low vision, cannot access TwitterMoments and the "TrendsForYou"
feature of the Twitter service.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
>From within the Twitter for iOS app, select the "Search and Explore" tab,
located near the bottom center of the display. The current headline article
will be displayed. This area of the screen is VoiceOver accessible.

3.
Either by single-finger swiping from left-to-right or using
explore-by-touch, place VoiceOver focus on the "Trends for You" heading,
located just above the middle center of the display.

4.
Now, single-finger swipe from left-to-right in order to read the currently
trending article headlines. In previous versions of the app, the trending
article headlines would be read, out loud. Now, however, swiping from
left-to-right results in nothing being read, out loud, even though there are
trending article headlines being displayed on the screen.

5.
Either by single-finger swiping from left-to-right or using
explore-by-touch, place VoiceOver focus on the "Today's Moments" heading.

6.
Now, single-finger swipe from left-to-right in order to read the Twitter
Moments article headlines. In previous versions of the app, the Twitter
Moments article headlines would be read, out loud. Now, however, swiping
from left-to-right results in nothing being read, out loud, even though
there are Twitter Moments article headlines being displayed on the screen.

I fervently request that this VoiceOver accessibility bug be addressed as
soon as possible.

Thank you,

Questions about formatting and picture conversions using KNFB Reader app

2017-10-23 Thread Jim Portillo
Good morning,

Two questions for you.

A few weeks ago, I was in a class where some handouts were being passed out.
A friend of mine took a picture of the handout he got using my KNFB reader
app. He'd never seen the app before, and was a bit skeptical about
something that happened while taking the picture. He said that the
formatting didn't look right or didn't look as it did on the actual handout.
Does the formatting need to be edited or something?

It read OK when I took it home. So, when the picture is taken, does the
formatting change in some way? How can I make sure the formatting is the
same?

Yesterday, I was in the same class, and my friend accidently used my camera
to take a picture of some papers handed out.

So, now I just have a picture. I seriously doubt that KNFB reader would
convert such a picture, right?

I think that next time, I'll just get my own copies of handouts. We just
thought we were taking advantage of my pone and the apps. If anyone knows
how to convert a picture using KNFB reader, I'd love to know.

Thanks.

Jim

Re: Xfinity mobile question

2017-10-23 Thread Richard Turner
Since Comcast has started their Accessibility help line, the customer service
has been quite good.
I have not gone to their mobile service since you have to buy the phone through
them and I'm not quite ready to buy a new phone.
They are using the Verizon towers, so the coverage is as good as Verizon plus
they switch to xfinity wifi when available saving on data usage.
You get unlimited talk and text with your comcast/xfinity internet service, so
no charge unless you use data.

Yes, you can raise or lower it by one degree at a time with the up or down
buttons. Or you can double tap on the Voice Recorder mic button and say set
heat at 70 degrees, etc.

Then, there will be a button to either set it as a permanent hold, or to hold
until a certain time.

You can also set up a schedule, though that is rather tedious.

rick,

The honeywell app works very well. The only thing I really wish was exposed to
VoiceOver is the current inside/outside temperature reading. You can use the
voice button and ask, but that is a bit hit and miss.

I like the fact that you can make adjustments from anywhere.

inaccessible with no way to interact with the controls with VO.

The skill you mentioned sounds very interesting. Is there any skill available
that will allow you to create schedules? Also, how much can you really do via
the Echo or Siri? I get the feeling it’s quite limited.

I have several years of experience with the Nest thermostats: we own two, and
we have two Nest smoke detectors as well (primarily because they will call your
phone if an emergency occurs at home).

The Nest app is moderately accessible … I have not been able to set schedules
using it. Also, if the thermostat has a problem connecting to your wifi, or
via the internet to the Nest main servers, it will display error messages only
on the thermostat (which you usually have to have sighted help to deal with).

You could get around the inability to set schedules by use of the “learning”
feature (having your installer clear all learning after installation and
testing is very helpful). Each time you make an adjustment to the temp, the
idea is that if it sees you do this repeatedly it will make a schedule for you.

My wife found it confusing when it would suddenly make a temperature setting
change without explanation, so we eventually turned off learning (I guess it’s
a personal preference).

It’s very nice that the Nest will manage humidity in a home which has a
two-speed or a variable speed system. It does this by running the system at
slower speeds when the humidity rises too high. Even with a standard single
speed system the Nest will manage humidity by “over-cooling” up to 4 degrees if
you enable this feature. However, it takes sighted assistance to adjust the
humidity level setting (it’s not something you usually ever adjust again
however).

It’s a very good idea to get an installer who is certified as a “Nest Pro”, so
ask them. Turns out my installer was not, and I am still arguing with them,
and trying to teach them about Nest features. Their one employee who
understood Nest thermostats has left them.

If you have both Nest thermostats and smoke detectors, if you have any smoke
the detectors will cause your heating or air conditioning to shut off to stop
the spread of smoke … a nice feature. Their smoke detectors report the problem
with a recorded voice announcement, along with its location, such as “low
battery in the dining room” or “smoke in the up stairs”, so this is also nice.
They self test themselves monthly, and report the results to you via the app.

While the ability to control Nest thermostats is built into the Echo, I use a
third party Skill called “The Thermostat” because it allows me to ask it what
is the humidity in the up stairs, and other such additional questions and
commands, so you may want to look into this skill as it works with many models.

Hth,

RE: WiFi thermostats

Richard,

Are you able to setup your own schedule via the app independently when using
the TCC app?

rick,

The honeywell app works very well. The only thing I really wish was exposed to
VoiceOver is the current inside/outside temperature reading. You can use the
voice button and ask, but that is a bit hit and miss.

I like the fact that you can make adjustments from anywhere.

Chip, thanks for the great summary. So far I’m leaning to the Honeywell

Ecobee4 looked interesting but I found the demo mode in the app to mostly be
inaccessible with no way to interact with the controls with VO.

Hth,

Chip

My husband and I just signed up with Xfinity Mobile. We are saving $25
a month from what we were paying with Verizon. The service has been
exactly the same as Verizon's, no quality change. You do have to buy
phones from them, you cannot take your old phone to them. We did need
to upgrade so we each got an Iphone 7. I would highly recommend this
service, I am so glad we switched.

keyboard issue after apparent forced upgrade

2017-10-23 Thread 'Ray T. Mahorney' via VIPhone
What might I be missing or, is this also
a bug?

can we ask the developer to make this games accessible

2017-10-23 Thread 'Ming' via VIPhone
it's sounds like an audio games for IOS! but, it's not accessible at all.

The virtual reality game only using auditory sense without visual sight
released.

It is the binaural sound horror game “Zombie Audio” that killing unexpected
creatures depending on hearing instead of opening eyes.

As the game “Zombie Audio” is an auditory-dependent virtual reality game, users
can have an astonishing experience that zombies are right next to them while
playing it with closed eyes.

Considering the fact that almost every game these days is produced to use
visual sight main sense, “Zombie audio” has differentiated competitiveness.
Anyone can experience the vivid virtual reality from hearing by using
ear-phones(also by head-phones).

The game is about the story of the main character, who is visually impaired,
surviving in the world occupied by zombies. As he survives depending only on
hearing, users may play it with closed eyes and be part of the story themselves.

Be all ears, be the virtual reality unfolded. Be fascinated by the unusual
experience playing “Zombie Audio.”

Re: four finger swipe for moving between apps?

2017-10-23 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
Assuming you have your phone set to portrait locked, when in a nap, with other
apps open as well, turn your phone to landscape and try the gesture moving for
fingers from top to bottom or bottom to top. this was how I first got
successful with the gesture and now can use it with the phone in any position.
sometimes, it helps to touch the middle of the screen first, to ensure the
children the content of the app. but I’m not sure this is necessary. One word
of warning, with the latest update, if you go past the first open app, you may
get thrown back onto the home screen. One final point, my hands are reasonably
small and I am using an iPhone 6, whereas, when I use the same gesture on my
old for S, it can be more difficult to achieve. The phone really does need to
see all four fingertips. all the forefinger gestures are more tricky because of
this.

hope this helps you a little, Sandy
