Re: Brailliant BI 14 display

2018-04-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Chris,
No, I don’t have a demo. I have just heard demos. For the price, it’s a great
thing. But it wouldn’t be something I would want. The only reason I would even
consider this new 14 sell display is for the notetaking capability. I’m really
not thrilled with only 14 S. But the notetaking capabilities.

2018-04-19 Thread Alan Lemly
Scott,

Another way to get to the app switcher with an iPhone with 3D touch as does the
iPhone 8 is to press with extra pressure near the left edge of the screen and
the app switcher should launch.

Hello Mary,
I have not heard the sound of the orbit refresh sound. I am very curious.
What I did not like about the orbit from the description is the weight, and
that it has no cursor routing keys. But I am curious to hear the refresh
sound. Do you have a demo?

No. For just under $1000, you were expecting it to duplicate the functionality
of devices costing double or more? It does not have the capabilities you
wanted. If you want that, be prepared to pay many thousands.

Re: Transitioning to Overcast from Downcast

2018-04-19 Thread Chris Chaffin

Downcast was my primary podcast player for several years, and I tried Overcast
a little over a year ago and now use it as my primary podcast player.
>From what I remember, Downcast only had one feature that Overcast does not,
>and that is the capability of actually saving your podcast files.
Now Overcast also has a couple of features that Downcast does not, and that is
the smart speed and voice boost features, which are both very good features. I
know this is only my opinion, but I think Overcast has the best playback when
it comes to playing faster then the normal speed.

Now I would encourage you, if you have not already, check out the settings
screen. 2 important settings there is whether you want to stream or download
the episodes, and what you want to do once you listen to an episode. I
personally download my episodes so I can listen to them no matter whether I
have an internet connection or not, and I choose to manually delete an episode.
That way if I want to keep it afterwards I can. Now I will tell you that if I
keep an episode after I listen to it, it does still show up under unplayed
episodes.

The smart speed and voice boost settings can be found on the playback screen.

You will also find that Overcast is updated more frequently then downcast.
But at the end of the day, they are both good players, and it is a personal
preference of
which you choose to use.

Chris

Re: cutting the cord pitfalls

2018-04-19 Thread Patti Johnson
Boy, they get you one way or the other, don't they! I am so sorry that happened.

I have internet and phone with AT which I don't care for really,
especially don't like what I'm paying for phone, but I will not bundle
to have all three, I have my tv through Spectrum.
It may be cheaper, but my thing about bundling is if one thing goes
out they all do. The companies just don't get that.
They keep pushing everyone to bundle.
I can't do just streaming because of lack of signal here; so I have to
have cable.
Or do totally without and I don't want to not have tv because it is my
entertainment.

cutting the cord pitfalls

Hi guys:

Well as you all remember. I decided to cut the cord and only keep my ATT
Uverse Internet. Well, it turns out you only get unlimited Uverse Internet
if you have laland line and tv. If you just have the internet, they cap you.

Well I work from home, so work takes up all my Internet.

They will not let me bundle Directv Now, nor my cell service, which is
through ATT with my Internet to create the bundle.

aah, the solution according to the ATT reps is to pay for a land line and
TV.

Hello Mary,
It is not much to expect. Now with the talk about braille displays for less
than five hundred dollars, It is not much to expect to add few mainly software
features, other than the microphone and a speaker.
I will see if it is on display anywhere close to where I live and go to have a
feel of the device.

Cheers,

No. For just under $1000, you were expecting it to duplicate the functionality
of devices costing double or more? It does not have the capabilities you
wanted. If you want that, be prepared to pay many thousands.

Brailliant BI 14 display

2018-04-19 Thread Cris Ali
Hello folks,
I am thinking of ordering a brailliant BI Braille display to use with my iPhone
and iPad. From the description it sounds like a nice neat device. However, I
like to know if it can be used as a stand-alone device, not merely a display.
The Human ware description states that it can be used as a stand-alone device,
but it does not say much on what it can do in this mode other than taking notes
and having a timer and a stop watch. That is not that attractive. I like to
know what else it can do in the stand alone mode. Does it have a calculator?
Does it have a microphone and recording capabilities? Does it have an audio
player? Does it have a web browser and could it connect to the wi-fi?
If anyone can tell me more about it I will extremely appreciate it.

Regards,

Cris

Re: iOS kindle app and braille display

2018-04-19 Thread Michael Feir
Hey Holly. I'm not having any issues with Kindle and my Focus40. However,
one thought did occur to me. There's a setting in the VoiceOver Braille
setting where you can indicate whether panning will automatically advance
to the next page or not. I have it set to on but if you turned it off,
perhaps that would help. Of course, you should be certain you ahve the
latest iOS and version of the Kindle app installed. Another thing to look
at is the font setting. I have it set to the Bookerly font and have it as
small as possible. Hope that helps.

iOS kindle app and braille display

2018-04-19 Thread Holly Anderson
Hi all. I’m having a weird problem using the kindle app with my braille
display. I’m using an orbit reader 20 and the kindle app seems to skip around
sometimes. Sometimes it won’t advance at all when I press the pan button and
sometimes its starts turning pages every time I press the pan button. I don’t
know if there’s a setting I can change or if there’s a way to fix this. Has
anyone else had this problem?
Thanks.

Change it to Tom and if it doesn’t stick turn Voiceover off and back on with
a triple press of the home button and see if that helps.

We were attempting to change the voice to the tom voice from Samantha. The
tom voice is selected but it won't change. We were able to do it the other day
but it was a bit difficult to do. once you choose another voice, and then have
Samantha has the voice does it some how get more difficult to change voices? Or
are we missing something? Thanks for the assistance with this as we're still
pretty new to the iphone.

Subject: Outlook iOS Duplicate messages

Dear listers

An using outlook for iOS.

Does anyone know why when I send messages to any of my nailing lists like this
one for example. Why the message goes through to the group but I also get a
copy of what I've sent in my inbox?

Worried that you all maybe getting the message twice where as I only mean for
it to go through just the once.

Confused here.

Regards

Daniel

Re: Transitioning to Overcast from Downcast

Jim,
You need to go to Downcast, go to the More tab, then Tools, then
Export to another application. This will produce the file you are
supposed to import into Overcast. I think that Overcast says something
about this when you start the import process in the app.

Re: Transitioning to Overcast from Downcast

2018-04-19 Thread Jim Portillo
I also decided to give this app a go, but it seems that I’m having issues when
it comes to importing.
I went to Import from App, and the first option I got was to import from
Downcast. I tapped on it and it opened Downcast, but then I don’t know what
was supposed to happen. I just got to Downcast.
Is it supposed to let me know it was importing?
I did go back to the Overcase app, and I just got the same menu as before, with
the option of importing from another app.
I must be missing a step somewhere.

Advice on taking good pictures when totally blind?

2018-04-19 Thread Jim Portillo
Good morning everyone,

This seems to be a great resource with several folks who can advise me well.
I'm going to be taking a vacation that I've been planning for a while.
As with all vacations, people enjoy taking and looking at pictures to
share with others. I've got an iPhone 7 with the latest IOS, and I'm
totally blind.
Are there good ways or methods for taking decent pictures or selfies
without always having to ask a sighted person to do it for you?
Much of the time, I'll be with other blind people as well.
Any good tips or resources for taking pictures would be much
appreciated. Can one just use the general camera app or is there a
better app for that?
Thanks.
Jim

RE: KNFB Reader in iOS 11.3

2018-04-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I just took a picture of a recipe my wife printed out and KNFB Reader read it
perfectly, at one point it said "Citrantro" instead of "Cilantro", but that was
the only mistake on a full page of print I could detect.
Make sure your lens is clean? If it is and you still have trouble I would
delete KNFB Reader and reinstall it.

Has anyone noticed KNFB Reader malfunctioning of late? Since iOS 11.3, KNFB
Reader has randomly crashed when taking a photo of text with my iPhone 7 Plus
and I always fail to get a comprehensible text read back to me: instead, I get
a long string of random characters and symbols. It used to work so well!

Re: Transitioning to Overcast from Downcast

2018-04-19 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Wayne,

I'm pretty sure you can use the action menu on a podcast episode to mark it as
unplayed. Overcast keeps tracks of which podcasts are played fine for new
episodes, so once you are dealing with new ones rather than imported ones, you
shouldn't run into this problem.

Best,
Anna

If you are using contracted braille, you can press dot 8 by itself for Return

RE: Needing charging cable for Boxwave Buddy case

2018-04-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Terri,

I Googled this and below is the description of what seems to be the keyboard
you have from the Boxwave website. According to this the keyboard is charged
with a Micro USB cables which are a dime a dozen and can be bought on Amazon as
well as every computer and electronics store. Chances are you have a few of
them kicking around as almost all small electronic devices with a rechargeable
battery including most Android phones use the Micro USB standard. If you have a
cable or two and the keyboard doesn't charge then it's probably because of a
problem with the keyboard, maybe the rechargeable battery in it is dead.

The buddy system was a good thing during 1st grade field trips and it’s an even
better thing now. Never again will your device be alone thanks to the Keyboard
Buddy – Backlit Edition
 from BoxWave.

Designed to be the perfect complement to the Apple iPhone 4's on-screen
keyboard, the Keyboard Buddy’s easy slide in and out keyboard is smooth and
natural. The instant you slide out the Buddy’s keyboard, the Apple iPhone 4’s
touch screen keyboard disappears for even more on-screen real estate.

Your device will also be proud of its buddy’s newest improvement; backlit keys
make the Keyboard Buddy a great partner both day and night.

Other improvements to the Keyboard Buddy include:

 * Raised keys to make typing faster and more accurate than ever
 * Improved button layout for a more intuitive typing experience
 * A larger cutout for the Apple iPhone 4’s camera and flash

Your Apple iPhone 4 will further appreciate the Keyboard Buddy’s form fitting
shell and secure snap on. No weird angles, bumps, or protrusions to get in
the way. So natural in feel, we call them the perfect pair.

An onboard battery, chargeable by micro-USB cable, with up to 2 weeks worth of
charge duration means your Apple iPhone 4 won’t be slowed down by its buddy’s
nap time.

The Keyboard Buddy – Backlit edition. A great companion. The perfect pair.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, does anyone know where I might be able to find a charging
cable, for my Boxwave Buddy, bluetooth keyboard?

I had 1, and now I can't seem to find it. I have another cable that was for a
different bluetooth keyboard. It does connect to the case. But it doesn't seem
to charge it, from what I can tell.

So if anyone has any ideas, that would be great!

Thank you,

Terri

Transitioning to Overcast from Downcast

2018-04-19 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. After the recent flurry of messages praising Overcast, I
thought I would give the app another go. I have been using Downcast
for some time but am open to other options. I do like some of the
effects of Overcast. one thing that I noticed almost immediately in
Overcast, once I had imported my feeds and subscriptions from
Downcast, is that all of my podcasts appear as played. However, I have
not listened to all of them in Downcast, in fact many episodes in
certain podcasts were unplayed. When I looked in Overcast though it
said that there were no unplayed episodes. Does anyone know how I can
have Overcast display unplayed episodes, and keep them unplayed until
I actually listen to them?

Thanks,
Wayne

RE: turning vo on in new phone

2018-04-19 Thread joedinero68
Hopefully this has been accomplished. As people mentioned the triple click or
asking Siri to turn it on. However, if someone at a cellurlar store setup the
phone they may not have enabled SIRI so be aware of that. That happened to me
on one of my phones at some point. I needed sighted assistance to get rolling.

Hello,
How can I obtain speech from voice over on a new iPhone 8 plus. I thought I
remembered how to do this but not sure.
Thanks much.

KNFB Reader in iOS 11.3

2018-04-19 Thread Harry Bell
Has anyone noticed KNFB Reader malfunctioning of late? Since iOS 11.3, KNFB
Reader has randomly crashed when taking a photo of text with my iPhone 7 Plus
and I always fail to get a comprehensible text read back to me: instead, I get
a long string of random characters and symbols. It used to work so well!

Braille displays

2018-04-19 Thread Richard Turner
I just received a Braille Edge for work.
I'm trying to sort out if I have a bad key or if there is an issue in iOS 11.3.
I hit spacebar plus e or dots 1, 5, and I should get a return command sent to
the iPhone, but nothing happens. Same with spacebar plus dot 8.
So far, other keys seem to be working as advertised.

Its been a while since I have had a working braille display.

Thanks,
Richard

been using Downcast for several years and love it. Occasionally I
experience bugs, but I haven't really had any major issues with it.

What are your favorite podcasts that are technology-oriented, blind

wondering about the best podcasts since DF has to be listened to live.

Needing charging cable for Boxwave Buddy case

2018-04-19 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I was wondering, does anyone know where I might be able to find a
charging cable, for my Boxwave Buddy, bluetooth keyboard?

I had 1, and now I can't seem to find it. I have another cable that was
for a different bluetooth keyboard. It does connect to the case. But it
doesn't seem to charge it, from what I can tell.

So if anyone has any ideas, that would be great!

Thank you,

Terri

third party keyboards

2018-04-19 Thread Justin Harris
Hello everyone. I've been off in Android world for a while, and just
recently decided to purchase another iPhone. I got the iPhone 8, and am
very happy with the device. However, I got very used to GBoard on the
Android, and while it is also available on iOS, it just doesn't seem to
work as well. For example, what I most want is something that is almost
exactly like the existing keyboard, but bigger, and with the number row
up top. Again, I tried to activate the number row in the iOS version of
GBoard, but no luck. Any other recommendations?

Finally, since I last used iOS, it seems that there have been some major
additions or changes to the way text can be editted. While these may be
good, I still haven't quite figured out what I'm doing. For example,
before, when doing a long press on a letter, that would bring up the
accented variations. Now, it just seems to move the insertion point,
which is not what I want to do. Any way to turn that off and go back to
the way it was?

Thanks,

Justin Harris

Double-tap the address and hear VoiceOver say "is editing," adjust the
rotor to "Edit," then swipe down to "Copy," and double-tap.

To paste the address where you want it to be, go to that place, then do
almost the same thing--adjust the rotor to "Edit," then swipe down to
"Paste" and double-tap.
