New 2018 iPhones, iPad Pros, Macs and more: Everything Apple could announce
on Sept. 12
The low down on every new iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch and more in
Apple's pipeline.
By Justin Jaffe, August 30, 2018 9:42 AM PDT

Roundup
Apple season is officially here. The company sent out invites for an event
scheduled on Sept. 12 at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California --
the second time the event will happen at the Apple Park campus. While new
iPhones are all but certain to be the headline, nearly all of Apple's other
product lines are due for a refresh, too.
Read: Apple sets Sept. 12 for its next big event, new iPhones on deck
So what, exactly, is on deck for Sept. 12? The latest credible report on
Apple's plans comes from an August 27 Bloomberg story co-written by Mark
Gurman, a journalist with a strong track record on Apple stories. It
reinforces and elaborates on earlier reports, claiming that Apple will debut
three new iPhones that utilize the basic iPhone X design (big notched
screen, no home button, Face ID), as well as the Apple Watch 4 and new iPad
Pros.
In addition to those products, Apple is also overdue to refresh its Mac
line, though its unclear if new products like a rumored MacBook Air
replacement would be announced in September or later.
With so many new Apple products on deck, we've collected all of the reports
and rumors herein. Just note that nothing here has been explicitly confirmed
unless otherwise indicated -- Apple almost never comments on forthcoming
product announcements. With that caveat in place, read on for the lowdown on
what we're hearing about new Apple products in the pipeline and when we
might see them.

Editors' note, Aug. 30: This post was originally published on Aug. 27, 2018,
and will continue to be updated with news and rumors on Apple's Sept.12
event and the company's 2018 product lineup.
Three new iPhones
Apple has faithfully announced new iPhones in September since 2012, when it
debuted the iPhone 5. And the company has offered two new models -- the
"standard" 4.7-inch size and "Plus" 5.5-inch version with a better camera --
since 2014. Last year, it outdid itself with three new models, the iPhone 8,
8 Plus and -- a few weeks later -- the radically redesigned iPhone X. This
year, Apple is widely expected to repeat that feat with a trio of totally
new models that all follow the X design model: No home button, and nearly
all screen.
Here's what we expect to see:
• The sequel: The follow up to last year's flagship will likely get a
bump in performance, better dual camera and longer battery life, while
retaining the same (or similar) 5.8-inch OLED screen.
• The big one: Rumor has it that Apple is developing a larger,
6.5-inch version of the iPhone X -- the iPhone X Plus, perhaps -- that could
have three rear cameras and cost $1,100 or more. It's possible that Apple
Pencil support could be added, too, to compete with Samsung's pro-focused
Galaxy Note phones.
• The less expensive one: Reported to be the least expensive option of
the trio, a 6.1-inch variation will likely have an LCD display and just a
single rear camera. Both larger phones may also get support for dual SIM
cards in some countries, according to that August 27 Bloomberg story. But
the 6.1-inch phone may not ship until October.

prices, release date
Plus, maybe a fourth sort of new iPhone
Since its debut in 2016, the iPhone SE has been the most affordable option
in Apple's phone lineup. It's basically the components of an iPhone 6S --
minus 3D Touch -- stuffed into the smaller body of an iPhone 5. Apple gave
it a modest refresh in 2017 but a major update is way overdue. According to
the rumors, however, Apple may deliver yet one more minor makeover in 2018,
giving the iPhone SE 2 the same A10 processor used in 2016's iPhone 7. Will
that refreshed SE retain its miniature 4-inch screen along with the $349,
£349 and AU$549 starting price? Only time will tell.

Apple Watch 4
With Google and Samsung ratcheting up the smartwatch competition, Apple has
a real incentive to shake things up with a dramatic new Watch announcement
in 2018. A bigger display and click-free buttons are possibilities, both of
which would imply the first major redesign since Apple's signature wearable
debuted in 2015. At the very least, we know Apple will debut WatchOS 5
(previewed at this year's WWDC developer conference), featuring fitness
improvements, an instant watch-to-watch walkie-talkie mode, support for
podcasts and an ability to play audio from third-party apps on the go.
Read: Apple Watch 4: Rumored specs, leaks, price, release date
New iPad Pro
When Apple debuted the latest iPad in March, adding Pencil support and a
faster processor, it narrowed the gap between the entry-level tablet and its
much more expensive Pro siblings. Now, rumors suggest that the company

Cannot Navigate to Hushmail's "Preferences" Area

2018-08-30 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

Has anyone experienced VoiceOver navigation problems with Hushmail, a
highly-rated email encryption service in Vancouver? Using the webmail
interface, VoiceOver does not speak the "Preferences" button. I have
noticed this on my iPhone running iOS 10.10.3 and on my Mac using
Yosemite 10.10.5. The button is on screen visually but simply isn't
spoken by VoiceOver. VoiceOver does not even say "button." It is as
if the control were not present at all. All help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Best,
Craig

RE: Talking/accessible thermostats

2018-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Without knowing the country I would say to take a look at the Honeywell Lyric
line of WiFi smart thermostats. Here in North America the T5 is quite
reasonable in price and it works well and has a very accessible app, it is both
Apple Home Kit and Alexa capable so you can use either SIRI or Alexa to tell it
to raise the temperature or lower it or set it to a certain number of degrees
etc.

This topic was covered earlier. check the archives. the options depend
on your country. North America uses different electrical standards
than Europe. You do not say for some reason your country so it is
impossible to respond to your question directly.

RE: Need advice on best telecom management strategy when vacationing in the Netherlands and Germany for three weeks from US

2018-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kevin,

For the most part roaming charges in EU countries have been abolished so if you
fly first into Germany you can get a plan there and ask if this will work when
you are in Holland or vice versa.
My mother was just in Germany for a bit over 3 weeks and she bought a plan from
the german Telecom, Vodafone is also strong and I would stick with those two
for best coverage and LTE. Best thing is to go to a Vodafone or German Telecom
store and askk them to advise you what is best.

Subject: Need advice on best telecom management strategy when vacationing in
the Netherlands and Germany for three weeks from US

Guys,

Need info on best option for telecom management when traveling from the US to
the Netherlands and Germany. My wife and I have iPhones which are unlocked, to
the best of our knowledge. Ideally, we need voice and data at a reasonable
cost in Holland and Germany for three weeks.

As I see it, our options are:

1. Buy two local SIMM cards at Amsterdam airport with a large enough data
allowance to send SMS, make local phone calls, upload photos to FB/Instagram
and get directions here and there while traveling.

2. Get two data only cards from a purveyor like Gig Sky and use Skype for the
voice/SMS component. Need info on just how or whether one can forward an
iPhone to a Skype number. May not want to get any unwanted messages from
people in the States because it’s election silly season. On the other hand,
would want to get message from home if house was in trouble while gone.
decisions, decisions.

3. By a My Fi box, also with a local SIMM, and tether our phones to that.
Turn Cellular Data off on phones and kill all push notifications that would
otherwise be active in Wi-Fi environments to prevent unnecessary data
consumption. Again, use Skype or Google Voice or something else to have voice
and SMS capabilities without buying an international voice and data plan from
AT, which I assume is cost prohibitive in even the best case.

Sorry this is such a long message. Trying to imagine all the scenarios from
which I have to choose.Have to make a decision fairly soon. Hope one of
you will answer.

Please CC reply to author in case I don’t get the chance to log into Google
Groups to follow this message. My preferences are set to No Mail because I
visit this list so infrequently.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Re: Really bad performance bike tune in on college football this evening

2018-08-30 Thread Richard Turner

mary, college games are carried the same as always, not on premium, but on
TuneIn free or Pro.
I listened to about 10 minutes of Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Tulane Green
Wave.

It did not buffer at all.

I then listened to some of Northwestern and Perdu, and it buffered, but that
happened last year some times, but wasn't a big problem.

I plan to listen to the Beavers and possibly the Ducks this Saturday, and see
how it goes.

I wonder if anybody was trying to listen to college football this evening.
There were several games on, admittedly not all of them in the top tier. I
tried several, including the Utah game, the Montana State game, don’t ask me
why, The game featuring main versus New Hampshire, and a couple of others for a
brief time that I don’t remember. All of them were plagued by terrific
buffering problems, drop outs, little passages that would repeat and repeat and
jump and skip. In general, and unacceptable listening experience. I did listen
to some of the Utah game on my echo device, and it was solid as a rock.
Therefore, I assume the problem is with the tune in app somehow. I have an
excellent Wi-Fi set up here now. So I know it’s not my network. I am curious if
anybody else is experiencing this. It really made listening to games on
acceptable. I did not used to have this problem with tune.

2018-08-30 Thread Suzanne Wilson
Mary and all,

I encountered buffering issues with TuneIn last pro football season even with a
premium subscription and for so-called higher-level games. I love hearing local
broadcasters for my favorite team, but it did irk me that I was paying for
service that could have been better. Although I haven't signed up yet this year
for this reason, I probably will break down and do it because I'm such a fan.
But I will hesitate long and hard before I do.

Re: Really bad performance bike tune in on college football this evening

2018-08-30 Thread Mary Otten
This was tune in regular. Not premium. I have no intention of subscribing to
premium. These are college games. Not pro. I didn’t think there would be a
difference for college games. I know there is some specific programming that is
only available on premium. But I didn’t think college games fit that bill.

RE: Recording from the iphone

2018-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There are not any apps which will do this directly on your phone.
The only way to do this is to use an app where you typically have to pay a fee,
then when you make a call or receive a call you want to record you open the
app, the app uses your conference call feature to make another call to
whichever service you use and the call is then recorded, it is basically a
three-way call and if you already answered a call you want to record, you have
to ask the other person to hold on because after you open the app and until the
connection is made and the calls are merged the caller will be on hold.
Also, depending on what country or, if in the US, which state you live in you
must let the other person know the call is being recorded, most of these
services make an announcement or play a tone every so often so the other person
knows they are recorded.
The only other option is a separate hardware device you can purchase where you
basically connect said device to your headphone jack and the audio goes through
the device where it is recorded.
The easiest solution if you want to record a call is to put it on speaker and
to put your iPhone next to a good old tape recorder or, if you have an iPad or
iPod Touch or digital recorder of any sort you can simply record the audio that
way.
I did hear that Skype may introduce a call recording feature in a future update
and in that case using Skype to record a call would be the easiest especially
if it is an outgoing call and of couorse I believe if you get a Google Voice
number you can also record calls, in fact, most Voip apps like Bria or
Groundwire will let you do this.

Sieghard

Does anyone know if there are any accessible apps that will let you be on a
call and record that call at the same time? The Apple store told me there is
nothing on the phone itself that will let you do that, but there were some
third party apps that might do that.

I wonder if anybody was trying to listen to college football this evening.
There were several games on, admittedly not all of them in the top tier. I
tried several, including the Utah game, the Montana State game, don’t ask me
why, The game featuring main versus New Hampshire, and a couple of others
for a brief time that I don’t remember. All of them were plagued by terrific
buffering problems, drop outs, little passages that would repeat and repeat
and jump and skip. In general, and unacceptable listening experience. I did
listen to some of the Utah game on my echo device, and it was solid as a
rock. Therefore, I assume the problem is with the tune in app somehow. I
have an excellent Wi-Fi set up here now. So I know it’s not my network. I am
curious if anybody else is experiencing this. It really made listening to
games on acceptable. I did not used to have this problem with tune.

This topic was covered earlier. check the archives. the options depend
on your country. North America uses different electrical standards

You can shake your device and a pop up will come up asking if you want
to undo your action. Flick to the undo button then double tap. there is
also an undo button above the on screen keyboard.

Talking/accessible thermostats

2018-08-30 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello,

Not sure if this topic has been discussed before. I am in need of purchasing
a replacement thermostat and looking for feedback from others of what people
are using. The VIP 1007 bit the dust and I am looking for different options
including, but not limited to talking thermostats. I know there are smart
ones out there with Alexa and IOS, but I would like to know how accessible
they are.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Re: Schedule of Free Training Courses Now Available - Please Read

2018-08-30 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone

Hi Clifton.

I'm Carol Pearson from the UK.

I'm very interested to have a stab at the first of your courses, already
being used to VoiceOver but not with the TV itself.

I understand this course will be twice weekly, on Tuesday and Thursday
afternoons.. Would you therefore kindly add me to the Apple TV course
and let me have further information about how, exactly, to link up with
you for the course.

I note, from your message, that you suggest the courses will commence at
2:00 PM but I am still not quite clear where, exactly, you are placed,
and so what that means in practice time-wise. Perhaps you could be kind
enough to clarify this for me.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing further from you.

Carol Pearson (Mrs).

On 20/08/2018 12:51, 'Kliphton Miller' via VIPhone wrote:
Hi everyone, first off, please share this with others, as I’ll
explain later on in the message. Many of you may remember, or may
have taken, the iPad training course I offered this past spring. I
was really humbled and appreciative of all the positive feedback from
that course, and I felt that the response to it was overwhelming.

I’m now excited to announce that I will be offering more free
training courses for 2018-19 training season. In this email I will
specify and explain what I am offering, I will provide course dates,
and I’ll provide a bit of other general info. I know some of these
dates are a good ways off yet, but as I’ll explain, there are
benefits to planning now.

First off, I’ll be offering four major courses over the next year.
They are as follows:

Replacing Your Traditional TV with Apple TV: four sessions, one
session per week, beginning Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Living the Connected Digital Life: Four sessions, one session per
week, beginning Tuesday, October 30, 2018

Learn VOiceover In and Out: eight sessions, two per week, beginning
Tuesday, January 22, 2019

Learning Voiceover In and Out, Section B: Eight Sessions, two per
week, beginning Tuesday, February 19, 2019

IPad for All Computing: 12 Sessions, two per week, beginning Tuesday,
April 16, 2019

The courses which have two days per week will be held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. All courses will be held in the afternoon, with exact
start times to be decided. Plan on somewhere around 2PM or 2:30 PM
Eastern. Sessions will last for two hours.

As with prior courses, each course is completely free and is
available to everyone, sighted and non sighted alike. As before,
courses will be held in Zoom, with an accompanying set of materials,
offered as iTunes U courses, with the exception of the Apple TV and
Connected Digital Life courses, which will require only small
handouts rather than complete iTunes U courses.

I’ll provide descriptions of each course below. What I’d love is if
people would start sharing this entire email with your friends,
family, co-workers, etc, and on any other relevant lists you may
belong to. Additionally, please let me know which courses interest
you. You can reply to this message with any questions, or you can
email me off list to simply express interest in any courses. Now for
some general descriptions:

The Apple TV course was sort of requested by several participants in
this year’s iPad course. It will be designed to offer participants an
overview of what the Apple TV can do and how to use it. We will then
get into various options for making the Apple TV your complete living
room device, cutting the cord, streaming, etc. what about local
channels? How about sports? What does it cost? How many people can
watch at the same time? On and on. We’ll answer all the questions we
can, with a particular emphasis on Voiceover use as well. You do not
need to own an Apple TV to benefit from this course. Even if you are
just mildly interested in it and want to explore what’s out there,
we’d love for you to join.

The Connected Digital Life will explore in-depth how to make all your
devices work for you no matter where you are. We will spend lots of
time on all the iCloud features and services, such as iCloud Photo
Library, iTunes in the CLoud, iCloud Drive, and many more. We’ll
discuss iCloud Keychain for password and credit card autofill, Apple
Pay, continuity, multiple devices together, HomeKit and home

question about App Switcher

2018-08-30 Thread Vicki W.
I have a question concerning what appears on the App Switcher screen.

On my mini Ipad, when I open up App Switcher, it not only has the apps that are
open listed at the top, below that, it shows most, if not everything, from the
control panel and right below that are my docs and at the bottom it will always
list three apps that I have most often used for easier opening.

On my SE phone, nothing appears on the screen except the open apps. How can I
both get the other options to show up on my phone and, if I choose, stop them
from showing?

Thanks.

Vicki

Need advice on best telecom management strategy when vacationing in the Netherlands and Germany for three weeks from US

2018-08-30 Thread Kevin Gibbs

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

RE: 3 important questions

Subject: RE: 3 important questions

I will tackle the second question about changing the volume.

There are 2 ways to change the volume.

The first way does not involve the rotor. In fact, I do not have “volume” in
my rotor. Let’s say you want to change the volume of VoiceOver. Do anything
to get VoiceOver speaking. Press the volume up or volume down button on the
left side of the phone while VoiceOver is talking to increase or decrease the
volume. You can use this method to change the volume of the phone ringer,
playing music or podcasts, and just about anything else.

In order to be able to flick up or down to change the volume, you first need to
add “volume” to the rotor. If you are very new to using the iPhone, the rotor
may not be the first skill you want to learn. Follow these steps.

Double tap Settings.

Double tap General.

Double tap Accessibility.

Double tap “VoiceOver On”.

Flick right until you reach “Rotor”.

Double tap “Rotor”.

Now you are in a list of things you can add to the rotor. If an item also says
“selected”, it is already added to the rotor.

Flick right until you locate “Volume”.

If it is not already selected, double tap “rotor” to select it. This adds the
item to the rotor.

When you finish adding other things you want in the rotor, double tap the
“back” button in the top left corner of the screen several times to return to
the main settings screen.

Since I do not have “volume” in my rotor, the next instructions may not be
absolutely correct. But here is how I think it should work.

Twist the rotor until you reach the “Volume” setting.

Then, when you want to change the volume of something that is currently talking
or playing, flick up or down.

Remember that flicking up or down changes or acts on whatever setting the rotor
is on at that time.

Hope this helps.

Rob

As I am a beginner to ios I need to ask you these questions?

If I get an email with an attachment, what should I do to save it? and when it
is saved, where should look for it please?

The other one is, why evrytime I flick up or down to increase or decrease the
volume nothing happen? Do I have to do something from the settings?

The last one is, how to create a folder where to save the notes, or documentts?

Thanks in advance

Sad to say, no. That is something I've wanted since I got my first iOS device

You can do this on a computer using outllook and possibly with gmail, and
