RE: New mesh router and my thoughts on switching WiFi

2018-10-19 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
I’ve got a second generation Eero with two extenders for a 3300 SQFT house. Run
two businesses out of it. 4k, TV, regular HD TVs, Fire Sticks/Fire TVs, Ring
Video Pro, desktop/laptops/wireless printer, iOS devices, etc. The one thing we
really don’t do are all that smart speaker/home automation stuff and yeah,
Once you go mesh, you never go back. My TPLink triband AC router is sitting in
the closet collecting dust wondering what it did wrong.

The one issue I’m still having is that my Ring Video still hangs when trying to
answer an alert. I really haven’t tried figuring it out though. My signal in
the garage where all my workout stuff is solid and I can get my Netflix on and
Pandora out to my heart’s content back there all I want while on the treadmill
or bike or whatever. My garage is further than where the Ring and front door is
so who nows.

Anyway . . . yes, a Mesh system for serious connectivity really is the future.

Subject: New mesh router and my thoughts on switching WiFi

Hi,

I thought I briefly share this experience. I recently bought two Netgear Orbi
mesh routers, one Home edition and one Pro/Business edition for my retail store.

Nowadays having a robust WiFi network is essential especially if you have some
home automation devices and are moving towards more home automation. Things
like the ring Video Doorbell or Skybell HD Video Doorbell are installed outside
the house and even in a relatively normal sized home the WiFi signal outside
the fron tdoor may not be the best if the router is located in the office on
the other end of the house as it is the case for our house. Of course at my
retail store the problem is worse since it is quite a bit larger, it has two
floors and the outside of the wall in back has metal siding which doesn’t help
the signal. I had a traditional WiFi extender before and while it is set up
upstairs right against the outside wall and the Ring Video Doorbell is
basically just below it and maybe 10 feet over, we had nothing but issues and
even standing outside with my phone I often only showed 1 bar on the WiFi.

So, 2 days ago the Netgear Orbi home came, I purchased the version which comes
with 1 satellite and in the description it says that this package should be
good for a home up to 5000 sqft. Our house is significantly smaller, but I set
up the main unit near the modem where our fibre connection terminates which is
in the office at the very back of the house and it’s about in the middle when
you look at the house from left to right. The satellite I put in the kitchen
which overlooks the entry hall, it’s probably about 35 or so feet from the main
unit and all the way on one side of the house. This unit is also only maybe 10
feet away from our entertainment stand with the TV, our Apple TV and my wife’s
TV box for getting The Filipino Channel. It is also super close to the front
door where our video doorbell is and just outside the wall is our deck off the
kitchen.

After I finally figured out how to configure the routers we are now getting 3
out of 3 bars everywhere in the house as well as outside both on the deck, in
front and in the backyard and suddenly it is actually quite quick and easy to
answer the Ring Video Doorbell which before often would just sit there saying
“Loading”. I had a Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 router before which is a very
high-end unit with 6 antennas, but it doesn’t even come close to the
performance of the Netgear Orbi.

The Orbi has an app which is quite accessible and the web interface where you
can do quite a lot more is also very accessible from what I have seen so far.
The main unit has 4 ports, one is your Internet connection where you connect it
to your ADSL, cable or fibre modem and there are 3 ports to hook up devices. I
am using one for our Philips Hue bridge, another to plug in one of my Sonos
players and I am currently not using the third, at some point I plan to get a
NAS unit for at home and then I’ll need it for that. The satellite unit which
looks identical has also 4 ports, all are ethernet ports where you can plug
stuff in if you want.

Here at home I use WiFi for pretty much everything, my laptop, printer as well
as the Apple TV and my wife’s Filipino channel set top box. These could all be
plugged in, but much easier without cables. All our other stuff needs to be
wireless anyways, but I did find out how much of a pain it is to change WiFi
networks, here is what we all had to reconnect to the new WiFi network:

4 Amazon Echo speakers

Honeywell Lyric T5 thermostat

Ring Video Doorbell

Apple TV

Filipino Channel Set top box

My iPhone, my wife’s iPhone and the laptop (those were easy)

HP Officejet Printer

2 Nest Protect smoke alarms

Withings/Nokia Body Plus smartscale

Sonos and Philips Hue just worked as they are

I should get the Netgear Orbi Pro next week, then I can have some more fun
doing the same thing at my store although here most of the computers are wired
as is the larger Officejet printer, but we do have 5 Dropam (now Nestcam) 2
WiFi thermostats, a Skybell HD which by the way even on the current WiFi works
way bettter than the Ring Pro we had before.
Then there are 4 of the Meross smart wall switches I just purchased and which
work great with a super-accessible app and setup process as well as two Amazon
Echo speakers.
I really look forward for these Netgear Orbi mesh routers to work well for a
long time to come since it's not only because of how much work it is to get
everything connected but also since they are pretty pricy devices.

Best regards and happy networking,
Siegharrd

And to expand on what Jenny said, you must have had the rotor turned to Hints
and then flicked up or down to turn them off, then the rotor got turned to
Headings and this is why you get the message “Heading not found” because if you
turn the rotor to headings and you are on the home screen or somewhere without
headings then obviously a heading can’t be found. I suggest turn the rotor
until you hear “Hints”, then flick up or down to “On” and then turn the rotor
to characters or something like that.

I’m going to try to explain how to accomplish to getting to Bookmarks &

Open Safari. Tap on Select Bookmarks tab at the bottom. In the upper left
corner check to see if it says Bookmarks Heading or Bookmarks Back Button. If
it says Bookmarks Heading you are in the list of bookmarked websites. Swiping
to the right you will find Done, Selected Bookmarks, Reading List, History,
Search Bookmarks. Search Bookmarks is an edit field in which you can type in
the name of a bookmarked website. The next swipe you will find Favorites
Button. Ignore this if you want to view your list of bookmarked websites. The
list of Bookmarked websites will begin with your next swipe. To view the list
of your saved Favorite websites, swipe right to left until you get to Favorite
Button & tap to open the list of your saved Favorite websites. In the upper
left swiping to the right you will find All Back Button, Favorites Heading,
Done Button, Selected Bookmarks Button (Ignore this), Reading List, History,
Search Favorites. This is an edit field in which you can type in a saved
favorites website. To return to the Bookmarks tap the All in the upper left.
If Bookmarks Back is in the upper left, tap on this. I’m not sure why the
Back button appears. I can’t recall for certain, but I think you will have to
tap on Select Bookmarks tab at the bottom again to get to the list of saved
bookmarks.

Hi,
I have saved a lot of web pages within Safari under Bookmarks, but only a few
under Favorites.
When I go to Safari today, pull up the Bookmarks tab, Select Bookmarks from
among the 3 tabs, and swipe right, I get an announcement for Favorites, and
Searching Favorites option, and then the list of the several Favorites I have
saved as Favorites.
I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to get to my web pages saved as
Bookmarks.
Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?
Feeling kind of stupid.
Thanks in advance, Keith

RE: Upgrading to a new iPhone with two factor authentication

2018-10-19 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 8 which I purchased directly
from Apple. Both of these models were Verizon phones. First, if your ordered
your iPhone XR from T-Mobile, won't it come with its SIMM card already
installed so you don't have to fool with transferring a SIMM from your old
phone to your new one? I know that was the case with my new iPhone 8. I don't
remember having to do anything with 2-factor authentication when setting up my
new iPhone 8. I used that feature introduced with iOS 11 I believe that lets
you hold the old phone near the new one to transfer settings and then I
restored an iTunes backup to the new phone. I don't recall it asking me to
2-factor authenticate anything but if it did, it was done on the new phone
without any issues.

I hope some of the above makes sense.

Its been along time since Ive had to deal with either getting a new phone or
using two factor authentication. What I remember from the last time I bought a
phone is that you have to put the Sim from your old phone into your new phone
in order to get the process of getting your phone up and running started. I
also remember some problems with two factor authentication in the past, having
to do with needing to have two devices on the same network or something, so
that I could get a message on one that would then be typed into the other one
in order to continue with the process. Does anybody know of documentation
somewhere that spells out just what you have to do? I mean, here I would have
my old phone on my Wi-Fi network but no Sim, so no cellular connection. The new
phone will be presumably on the cellular network but I cant remember where the
Wi-Fi setting comes in. Anyway, all I need is a pointer in the right direction
I guess.

After installing, individual apps should continue to be updated.

Hi folks

I am still running itunes 12.6.4 with appstoren embedded.

Since 18 March, I notice that except for some popular apps like fb and
messenger the library of apps is nolonger updating itselves when I ask it to
do so while chosing apps and updates.
Most of my apps are from this date updated. I use that old itunes because I can
get back to previous app updates when some updates would include accessibility
regressions.
It seems like Apple is nolonger supporting app updates even not in this old
itunes especially issued for business environements so that people can still
have an appstore on their itunes?
Any iedeas?

Upgrading to a new iPhone with two factor authentication

2018-10-19 Thread Mary Otten
It’s been along time since I’ve had to deal with either getting a new phone or
using two factor authentication.
The new
phone will be presumably on the cellular network but I can’t remember where the
Wi-Fi setting comes in. Anyway, all I need is a pointer in the right direction
I guess.

Inaccessible experience purchasing an iPhone through T-Mobile

2018-10-19 Thread Mary Otten
I purchased, or I should say I pre-ordered, an iPhone XR today through
T-Mobile. I first tried on the website, but it kept saying it was having
problems loading and I should retry. So I ended up calling my “team of experts“
on my current T-Mobile phone. The Customer Service from T-Mobile was very good.
The woman got my order and sent me an email with a link that I had to use in
order to electronically sign the document. They use a service called Doc you
sign. And the very last thing you have to do with that service before you
submit the order is to draw your initials or write your name in a box on the
page. Naturally, voiceover does not see this box, so this process is not
accessible. The customer service person at T-Mobile was apparently on familiar
with this process, as she had really no knowledge of this in accessible box.
When my husband got home tonight, he did the signing. When I am curious about
is whether anyone has found a way around this ridiculous in accessible feature.
It seems to me I’ve purchased an iPhone a couple of years ago from T-Mobile
using the same process, only I don’t think it was doc you sign. Or if it was, I
didn’t have that stupid box. I wonder how others did with their online
purchases through carriers.
Mary

Repairing the Voice Dream library

A friend needs to repair her Voice Dream library. The manual talks about doing
it, but it never says how to do it, that we can find. Can someone describe how
this can be done?

Thanks.

Hello Lelia. My condolences.

I have a Brailliant 14 for my phone. You do have to pan, and since It only has
14 cells, the speech is usually ahead of how fast the Braille displays. But I
really like it. I tried the new BrailleMe from a company in India and could
never get it to pair with the phone. I have seen a demo of something called El

and it is really cool---it's a Windows 10 tablet dressed up to look like a

But on my desktop I use an Alva Satellite 570, which I bought used. So I am

Hope you can find something that will work well for you. Braille with the

We have an orbit reader and absolutely love it. It has no fancy bells and
whistles but displays Braille beautifully and pairs beautifully with phones so
I hear though we don't do that. It won't scroll but will take any braille file
you put in it.

There is another way to get to what you want, too. They use slightly
different interfaces, I prefer the following way, but either of them get the
job done, it depends on which method one prefers. In the get books tab,
double tap bard web site, switch the rotor to headings, and swipe down to
previous downloads.

As far as I know you would have to download them again.
With the latest version, when you go to get books there is an option to get the
list of previously downloaded books, so you could work from that.

Braille displays

2018-10-19 Thread Lelia Struve
Well, this is a very sad day. My braille display said goodbye to me. I shocked
it and I shocked it goodbye. So there is a few things that I am wondering, do
any braille displays automatically pan to the next page or line or do you have
to manually do that with all of them? Another thing I’m wondering is if anyone
has used many braille displays which do you think is the best for you? I do
realize that what is best for one is it best for all. I am just wondering.

Re: Sling TV and us.

2018-10-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Fred,
That’s very interesting. I tried a trial of sling TV several weeks ago. I also
have an Apple TV and a fire TV. And I found it not very accessible on either
one. I was talking to Chris from Mystic access. And he said it was really
accessible on the Roku. The Roku voice is so awful that I didn’t go there. And
I canceled before I have to start paying for the service. So I’m wondering when
you did your trial, and was the app recently updated?

Search Favorites. This is an edit field in which you can type in a saved

Re: Help please with Safari Favorites versus Bookmarks

2018-10-19 Thread B. J. Maynard
hi,

as I said before the bookmarks you have in the favorets folder of bookmarks are
teh bookmarks that show up on a blank webpage. I think it's good to put
websites you visit frequently here.

OK yes, but what’s the difference, or the use of Bookmarks versus Favorites
in Safari? I too am curious of this; have been for some time.

I’m going to try to explain how to accomplish to getting to Bookmarks &
Favorites within Safari. If you don’t understand something just ask & I’ll try
to explain things better.

I can’t recall for certain, but I think you will have to
tap on Select Bookmarks tab at the bottom again to get to the list of saved
bookmarks.

  Hi,

I have saved a lot of web pages within Safari under Bookmarks, but only a
few under Favorites.

When I go to Safari today, pull up the Bookmarks tab, Select Bookmarks
from among the 3 tabs, and swipe right, I get an announcement for Favorites,
and Searching Favorites option, and then the list of the several Favorites I
have saved as Favorites.

I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to get to my web pages saved
as Bookmarks.

Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

  Feeling kind of stupid.

  Thanks in advance, Keith

As far as I know you would have to download them again.

With the latest version, when you go to get books there is an option to get the
list of previously downloaded books, so you could work from that.

That sounds like a good suggestion to send to the BARD folks. Make it possible
to send downloaded books back to the wish list.

I'll add to Richard's comment to confirm that when you move to another device
even if you have a full, encrypted backup to restore to that device, your BARD
Mobile content is not restored to it. Anyone who has many books downloaded to
BARD Mobile especially if they've begun reading them should make note of the
book title and reading location before getting a new device.
