RE: Initial thoughts after today's Apple Event

2021-09-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Here part of an article on 9to5Mac:

For 14 years, our partnership with (RED) has led to almost $250 million in
donations to fund HIV/AIDS treatment programs. Now through June 30, Apple is
working with (RED) to redirect 100 percent of eligible proceeds from
(PRODUCT)RED purchases to the Global Fund’s COVID‑19 Response. This will
provide critical support to health systems most threatened by the outbreak and,
in turn, help preserve lifesaving HIV/AIDS programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

All due respect to fashion, but if you get a red phone, you are now
contributing 10% of the purchase price to fighting the global Covid-19
pandemic. That was why I got a red iPhone 11 last year.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread lists

Hi Mark and all,
As mentioned to another list member on here directly after the event, I'll be
staying put this year and watching to see what happens with iPhone 14 and
beyond.
It's very disappointing that there is no finger print reader once again. I love
using this feature on my Google phone.
I'm also more than delighted to keep my series 6 watch for as long as Watch OS
will be available in terms of updates.
The mini looks nice, but having only received my 5th gen device last year, It's
not required to spend so soon specially as it's working well and most likely
shall run 15 plus 16. My plan is just to wait for a while.
I'm more interested in settling into my new Quality Engineering role, Further
study at my University, As well as intensive O & M as I've moved into a new
exclusive private home after living in my current location for the last 23
years.
Cheers guys for all the comments on the new hardware and banter. 

Subject: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

Hello Everyone,

I've enjoyed reading all of the comments on iPhone 13.

To say that I was disappointed that this year's iPhone models do not have any
kind of fingerprint reader, would be the understatement of the season.

So, as for me, I have updated my beloved 8 Plus to iOS 14.8, had a new battery
installed earlier, today, and intend to hold out for one more year (smile).

Besides, not that I am superstitious or anything but I do not relish the idea
of using any kind of device with the number 13 being part of its name (smile).
It took all of my courage, back in the day, to install iOS 13!!!
(big Smile). Again, not superstitious, just careful (grin).

Mark

Re: A Question About Apple Fitness Plus for VoiceOver Users

2021-09-16 Thread CHELA Robles
Hey Mark Taylor, it’s very interesting you bring up this topic because I just
tried it out not too long ago in fact I think I tried it out on Monday and I
quickly gave up because there weren’t any audio descriptions during the video
as to how to do certain things that’s why I chose to do the walking workouts
since all I had to do was walk even though I really wanted to do the body core
workouts those were not really described unfortunately there’s some really good
cardio ones but again you run the risk of them not being described as far as
the movements go. The walking ones are easier for me since all I have to do is
walk or run for a certain amount of minutes. Sorry I can’t be very helpful. I
only just recently started using Apple fitness plus whatever it’s called since
I already have an Apple one subscription that has four services in one.

If you are on the first row of your home screen, on the second icon. If you
turn the rotor to vertical navigation and flick down, you will land on the
second icon in each row. You are going straight down the column.
It works anywhere you have columns.

I know what Yoda said. I was taking a bit of liberty with the original; but I
guess that must not have been clear.
I suppose the word "paraphrase was the wrong word to describe my "spin-off"

O well.

Angie,
That is at least two of us on this list who were born on a Friday the 13th.
Great day to have been born!

All this nonsense about avoiding the number 13 is just that.

Rather than being extra careful on the 13th, people would be wise to be careful
in general, .

Whether one buys a new iPhone or not is such an individual choice, I certainly
would never say someone "should" or "should not" buy a new phone. When I
worked in the counseling field, my favorite phrase with people was to encourage
them to "stop should'ing all over themselves as well as others."
To paraphrase what Yoda says, "Do or do not...there is no should."

Ah but Sieghard

What green is apple green?

And some apples are red,
Or a mixture,
But yes browns,

Or karkey or kakk

I’m sure as you state there could be interesting names in the brown range!

Hmm, and other descriptive terms could also be applied to the colour brown,
maybe Apple could start a contest to see who comes up with the best term 藍

And then why has there never been an iPhone in colour Apple Green?

Angie,
That is at least two of us on this list who were born on a Friday the 13th.

The blue for the regular iPhone and the mini paired with a black leather case
reminds me of rugged men on motorcycles wearing black leather jackets and blue
jeans. It will be either a blue or Midnight for me. My iPhone 7 is black and I
am a Nia list so black goes with my personality.

Interesting article I read this morning on mac rumours,

The iPad mini new has the a15 bionic chip,

But they are saying its been clocked down to make it slower than the a15 bionic
in the phones.

Kind of a low move I think in the tablet if they have actually done that.

All due respect to fashion, but if you get a red phone, you are now
contributing 10% of the purchase price to fighting the global Covid-19
pandemic. That was why I got a red iPhone 11 last year.

2021-09-16 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Carolyn,

Yeah I'm think ing the same thing,
And have pretty much decided to wait until next year to replace my 11 pro max.

It's still in great working condition

But it's the watch I'm currently waiting for as my s4 is slowly dying with it's
battery only lasting up to 12 hours per day,

Minus if I'm working out.

So the 7 might be a good upgrade

They will go away in spring 2022? My problem is between a 13 mini and a 14, if
a 14 might have fingerprint ID. Of course, I'm living without fingerprint, but
this is way sooner than I wanted to replace my 11 that I bought in January of
2020.

the rumor for the end of the Mini is extremely strong. Apple confirms almost
nothing. Apple is planning a big upgrade to the camera system for the 14,
increasing to 48 megapixels from the current 12. They do not want to put
resources trying to figure out how to cram this into a phone that is just five
percent of their 12 lineup. If folks want a mini, like I do, run and get the
deals this fall for the 13 mini. The deals will go away in spring 2022.

A Question About Apple Fitness Plus for VoiceOver Users

2021-09-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Question: does anyone use or has anyone used Apple Fitness Plus? If so,
how was / is your experience?

So much of the content is video-based, at least, that is how it appears in
all of the Apple Keynote Presentations.

I know that they mentioned something about adding more audio-based content
to the service but just wanted to get some feedback here in the forum.

I look forward to your replies,

Mark

RE: Anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard?

2021-09-16 Thread Alan Lemly
If QuickPath was the original buzz term Apple chose for Slide to type, I notice
that the more descriptive Slide to type is what appears in the settings for
this feature.

It is actually called "QuickPath" and you use it by finding the first letter of
the word you want to type and holding down your finger for a couple of seconds,
when you hear a little sound it is active and you then very quickly slide your
finger to the other letters in the word you want to type or even close to their
position on the keyboard. At some point if you are doing it correctly you hear
Voiceover say the word you want, this could be after just a few letters or
sometimes more and if you hear the word spoken you can lift your finger and the
word will be inserted. You then find the first letter of the next word you want
and start over. If you practice a lot and have good spatial awareness of where
the letters are on the onscreen keyboard you can type quite quickly this way.

Hi List,

I’m looking for an alternative to FlickType for when I have to upgrade my
iPhone SE 2020 or upgrade to iOS 15 and no longer have a working FlickType app.
Can anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard comment on its accessibility and
what on screen typing is like using it with Voiceover? I don’t use a Bluetooth
keyboard and much prefer on screen typing with my iPhone especially when I’m
away from home and I’m starting to research other alternatives for when
FlickType is no longer on my device.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: HomePod problem

2021-09-16 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Ed. I didn’t have to do anything with my router. I did a whole lot of
Google searching, and finally went into the app for my router and found out
that my HomePods were not online, even though they should be on the same
network as my iPhone. I ended up having to unpaired the speakers and restart
them. I guess all is well that ends well. This is the first time that has
happened to me with the HomePods and hopefully the last.

Re: Anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard?

2021-09-16 Thread Matthew Janusauskas
I’ve also had fairly good results with the QuickPath keyboard feature. As with
most things it deftly requires some practice and getting used to, but it is
completely compatible with VoiceOver. The initial required delay after the tap
and hold to begin QuickPath input can also be adjusted in settings.

Updated "7 Little Words" problems

2021-09-16 Thread Debby
Hello,

Some of my friends and I have updated the puzzle game "7 Little Words" to
version 7.0.11 with not very good results. We have tried it on iPhone 8s,
iPhone 12s and iPhone SE 2020s. When you first load it, it asks if you want
to do text-to-speech. You need to use it because if you tell it no, you
will have no speech including nothing coming from Voiceover.

More sounds have been added to the game, and with each swipe around the
screen you hear clicks. In setting there is a checkbox to turn the clicks
off, but I unchecked the clicks and it didn't work. A friend of mine likes
all of the clicking, but it is kind of annoying to me.

Also for me double tapping doesn't always work. I sometimes have to
repeatedly double tap to go anywhere.

There are other issues, but before I write to the developer, can anyone tell
me technically what in the world the developer did to the game? I am not
sure how to explain it to them.

Thanks for your help!

Take care and stay safe!

RE: Anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard?

2021-09-16 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Ed,

My initial experience with the Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard was not good. I'm
used to having the ability with the native on screen keyboard to be able to
cycle through my various software keyboards and change them using a button to
the left of the spacebar. If this button was available with SwiftKey turned on,
I couldn't find it so I had to turn off SwiftKey in order to return to the
native on screen keyboard.

If anyone has any tips about using SwiftKey with Voiceover, I'd love to hear
them. I'd especially like to know how to move among other soft keyboards when
SwiftKey is active.

Hey Allen,

I have used Swift Key in the past. I love the Emoji section of the keyboard, as
far as the standard qwerty side of the keyboard there is nothing fancy for
Voiceover users. It’s simply a normal keyboard. We don’t have access to the
swift key swipe functions. The keyboard always seemed to freeze when using VO
as well. Once other annoying feature is when typing with it, Swift Key always
announces the first predictive text option and there is no way to turn this
announcement off.

All in all, it’s accessible but it’s not a great keyboard for VO users.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Carolyn

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't have a mini, but I do prefer braille screen input on my iPhone 11 over
my iPhone 7, especially when using it in landscape mode. The larger screen just
gives me more room so my fingers aren't so cramped. The home button also gets
in the way when using braille screen input on the iPhone 7. For these and other
reasons, I do prefer using braille screen input in screen away mode. I just
find it easier to make sure my fingers are oriented correctly, plus
It works more consistently as I move back and forth between the iPhone 7 and
the iPhone 11.

I suppose it varies from person to person, but have any of you mini users use
Braille Screen Input? I like the idea of a small phone but wonder if (1) BSI is
harder and (2) how is the audio? Is the speaker also smaller?

As to battery: I get a day out of mine, often a bit more but of course it does

Re: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Kelly Pierce
the rumor for the end of the Mini is extremely strong. Apple confirms
almost nothing. Apple is planning a big upgrade to the camera system
for the 14, increasing to 48 megapixels from the current 12. They do
not want to put resources trying to figure out how to cram this into a
phone that is just five percent of their 12 lineup. If folks want a
mini, like I do, run and get the deals this fall for the 13 mini. The
deals will go away in spring 2022.

Simon,
You have to remember, Apple makes up names for their colors.
My wife describes Sierra Blue as a light Sky Blue. All of their colors, she
says, are in the pastel hews.
It is only on the 13 pro and pro max.

The regular 13 and 13 mini have Midnight, which is basically black.
They also have a "blue" that is a darker blue than the Sierra Blue. Interesting
they don't make up a name for the regular blue...

Hmm, and other descriptive terms could also be applied to the colour brown,
maybe Apple could start a contest to see who comes up with the best term 藍

And then why has there never been an iPhone in colour Apple Green?

Help needed with slide to type and punctuation

2021-09-16 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I'm starting to play around with the slide to type keyboard setting with the
upcoming demise of FlickType. For those interested, I highly recommend the
9/18/19 podcast by Thomas Donville also known as AnonyMouse at AppleVis. The
title of the podcast is How to use the iOS quick path swipe keyboard with
Voiceover. Quick path was the official name of the setting although slide to
type is the name most used and what is used in the settings.

My question is how to get punctuation when using slide to type and composing
an on screen message. This will mainly be the period or full stop at the end
of a sentence. I thought I had auto punctuation turned on that would place a
period at sentence end by double tapping the spacebar but this is not
working. If anyone using Voiceover can let me know how to adjust my
punctuation settings so that I don't have to open the numbers screen on the
on screen keyboard to find the period, I'd very much appreciate it. Or if
there is a gesture I'm missing that speeds up the entry of punctuation, I'd
really like to know about it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The blue for the regular iPhone and the mini paired with a black
leather case reminds me of rugged men on motorcycles wearing black
leather jackets and blue jeans. It will be either a blue or Midnight
for me. My iPhone 7 is black and I am a Nia list so black goes with my
personality.

Simon,
You have to remember, Apple makes up names for their colors.

No pink for me. I want a masculine looking iPhone. Midnight is the new black. I
would be open to purple though.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Richard Turner
Angie,
That is at least two of us on this list who were born on a Friday the 13th.

Hmm, and other descriptive terms could also be applied to the colour brown,
maybe Apple could start a contest to see who comes up with the best term 藍

And then why has there never been an iPhone in colour Apple Green?

RE: Anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard?

2021-09-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Simon,
You have to remember, Apple makes up names for their colors.

RE: Initial thoughts after today's Apple Event

2021-09-16 Thread Carolyn
I would not want a red phone. I remember, when I had partial sight, and my aunt
and uncle had a red on on their wall. This was in the 50's, when colored phones
were not common, but I did not like the look of that red phone.

Yeah I spoke to apple about the s7 watch yesterday,

I asked what the star light colour was and she said that it's a cream type
colour A combination between gold and silver.

Which is what Richard said yesterday.

Again a colour to attract the Asian / Chinese market who like the bling colours.

My sighted wife, who is a quilter, says that Starlight is a creamy white color.
Think of the color of cream and that is pretty darn close.

That makes sense, because Starlight implies the color of the light coming from
a star, right?

What I remember from my sighted first 12 years, camping in the mountains at
around 8000 feet, when the stars seemed almost close enough to touch, cream is
a good comparison for starlight.

She also said all the colors are pastels.

Their purple she said is a light lavender. Pink, a lighter pink. Space Gray a
medium to light gray.

And here in nz night is pretty dark but with sparkles.

First of all we have four color schemes at our disposal. Be it azure blue to
golden pink, gold, as well as more sober sidereal grey. Apple has dubbed these
color schemes Purple, Pink, Starlight, and Space Gray.

I think that means Apple is calling Gold, Starlight if you take them in
respective order n\in that list.

Purple: azure blue

Pink: golden pink

Starlight: Gold

Space Gray: sidereal grey

I do like the sound of the new iPad mini,

And usb-c will be a major bonus

And the full screen without the home button will be interesting

But can someone tell me,

What colour is star light?

I understand pink purple and space grey,

But star light to me is dark dark blue with bright sparkly things through out

Re: Anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard?

2021-09-16 Thread Ed Worrell

Re: HomePod problem

2021-09-16 Thread Ed Worrell
Hey Mary,

I have had this issue as well. I actually had to go as far as restarting my
wireless router for anything to help.

I can proudly say I’ve only had this issue once. I guess it was luck, maybe…

I keep hearing that the 13 mini will be the last mini; wondering if this is
official or a rumour.

As to battery: I get a day out of mine, often a bit more but of course it does
depend on what I’m doing. It’s good enough for my needs.

Re: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Gordon
I like the idea of the mini, but Apple discontinued the 12 mini pretty
early on because of poor sales. So I hope this one does better. I just
think that particular phone could always be dealing with battery life
issues since it's so small and trying to handle the daily demand users
put on it.

2021-09-16 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Hi to all. I totally agree with you Mark. I will also wait another
year before upgrading my iPhone8. I will have something to look
forward to. Last night I had a question and called apple
accessibility and I found out something totally awesome about the
iPhone 13 pro. It can go as high as one terabyte of storage. That is
so totally awesome. I can just fill that baby up with so many books.
The battery life on the iPhone 13 is also really cool. I could get
almost double the amount of battery life of my iPhone 8. If the
iPhone 13pro has so much storage and such a good battery life, just
imagine how cool the iPhone 14 will be. Also, if the iPhone 14 really
does have some kind of touch ID, that would be perfect for me. I know
the processor would be also very good on the iPhone 14 as well. I
just have to start saving up money now.

Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I've enjoyed reading all of the comments on iPhone 13.

To say that I was disappointed that this year's iPhone models do not have
any kind of fingerprint reader, would be the understatement of the season.

So, as for me, I have updated my beloved 8 Plus to iOS 14.8, had a new
battery installed earlier, today, and intend to hold out for one more year
(smile).

Besides, not that I am superstitious or anything but I do not relish the
idea of using any kind of device with the number 13 being part of its name
(smile). It took all of my courage, back in the day, to install iOS 13!!!
(big Smile). Again, not superstitious, just careful (grin).
