A great gift idea for blind iDevice enthusiasts

2022-02-28 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi all,

I hope the moderator won't mind me drawing the groups attention to a
really quirky iDevice related gift that I purchased for myself as a
bit of a late Christmas present. To be clear, I have absolutely no
relationship with the company at all - I'm only posting about it
because I think it would be a great gift idea, particularly for blind
people.

Grid Studio are a company that create framed art pieces out of old
iPhones and some other devices. Their creations are actually great
examples of how art can still be accessible to those of us with no
useful vision as by their very nature they're incredibly tactile.
Additionally, since the company dismantle the phones before framing
them, they end up turning into far more interesting pieces to feel
than you'd get if you just stuck an old, unmodified iPhone in a frame.
I've purchased their framed 4S ad 6 and honestly couldn't be happier.
https://www.gridstudio.cc

A few things to bear in mind:

The frames ship from China. It's not a speedy service in relation to
what we're used to today by any stretch of the imagination so if you
need one quickly, I'd suggest you look elsewhere. I ordered mine on
the 8th of February and they arrived in the UK on the 28th.
By default a plastic board is installed in the frame to protect the
components, but if you leave it installed you won't be able to feel
any of them. It is however very easy to remove and the frame can be
reassembled without it installed without issue.
Each component is labelled in print. With a bit of creative thinking
and potentially some help from someone with some useful vision, there
should be enough space surrounding the components for braille labels
to be added if you wish.
The website's a little tricky to use. I was able to complete my order
using NVDA and Firefox however.

I should probably also point out that their frames aren't what most
people would class as cheap but this didn't really bother me. I can't
remember the last time I purchased a piece of art for myself (I'm not
sure I ever have), but what ultimately pushed me over the edge was
that they're something that I'll actually be able to get some
enjoyment out of, instead of just making my flat more interesting for
sighted guests.

I hope someone found this useful.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: another orbit/iPhone question

Hi Richard,

I have turned off auto capitalization in settings, and it is as you describe.
For example, it might write the word where as a divided word with capital
letters randomly placed in the word. I might write for 20 minutes without a
problem, and suDisenly have several capitilized words in a row. It's all
random. So I can't really duplicate the problem.

RE: another orbit/iPhone question

2022-02-28 Thread Richard Turner
What you are describing sounds like the auto translate is getting in your way.

By chance are the capitals often letters that if written alone would be capped,
like I or O?

I've not noticed the auto capitalization setting in General Keyboard to impact
braille displays, but that may be worth checking too.

RE: another orbit/iPhone question

2022-02-28 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,

We need more information.

Which iOS?

Which app or apps?

What grade of braille is set for both input and output?

Can you give a specific example or two?

Thanks,

Richard

Subject: another orbit/iPhone question

Hello listers,

I'M breaking in a new Orbit reader 20 plus. But when using it with my iPhone 8,
it randomly inserts capital letters, and I don't know how to stop it from
happening. ANY suggesTions for solving this will be greatly appreciated.

Peace & Blessings,

Re: (Attn: Mickey) Accessibility issue with the Alexa app:

2022-02-28 Thread Mickey Quenzer
Hello Donna:
Thank you so much for this tip. I forgot that I had asked you for that so
thank you for sending that to me and I’m so happy that I found this today.
I saved it in the notes so that I can do this when I get a chance. Again
thanks a lot! These tips should be somewhere I don’t know where so that’s
why I’m trying to save all these in a note.
