RE: Selecting Item from Extensive List

2022-05-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
In iOS many of these picker item boxes allow you to double tap and hold and
then you can drag your finger up the screen a ways to jump across many items.
If it works you should hear a bunch of little clicks and you can then stop and
check where you are at. I was born in 1967 so if the lists starts in 2022 I
just double tap and hold near the bottom of the screen and then drag most of
the way up and that often gets me to the 1970's in one go.

Need Some Help Finding the Speak Screen Controller on iPad Display

2022-05-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

When I enable the Speak Screen Controller on my iPad, in order to use the
Siri Voice to read Kindle Books, etc. I cannot seem to find a way to locate
the controller via VoiceOver. For that matter, I cannot get the 2-finger
swipe down gesture to work, especially in the Kindle app. Does anyone have
a solution to this problem?

Okay, the steps to reproduce this problem are:

1.
>From the Accessibility area of Settings, select Spoken Content.

2.
Toggle on Speak Screen.

3.
Toggle on Speak Controller.

4.
In the Voices area of Spoken Content, select a Siri voice.

5.
Now open the Kindle app or the Notes app, etc. (an app with text to read.)

With a book open in Kindle, a 2-finger swipe down from top to bottom does
not start the Speak Screen feature using the Siri TTS.

More disturbingly, to me at least, is that I cannot locate the Speak Screen
controller via VoiceOver even though it is present on the display.
Moreover, the controller is not located in the same area of the display
every time it is toggled on.

Were I not able to see my iPad's display, I would not be able to locate and,
consequently, start Speak screen via the controller.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Thanks, Richard. The link worked great. I would add a couple of tips to your
instructions:

I needed sighted help to sign into the Kindle app. I couldn't get to the fields
for entering my email address or password. I tried JAWS, NVDA, and Narrator
with no luck.

Also, to turn off updating, open a book in the Kindle app, and tab to Options.
Press Enter. In the first section of Options, which is general, tab to a check
box about automatic updating. Make sure to uncheck it.

I think now that I have the whole file name in the html code, it would download

I had fixed the link last night after realizing the .exe got left off in the

Thank you all for your help. Alan, I had no problems downloading your Codex

Hello Mary,

I use caliber with Narrator as I am not a JAWS user. For the record I use
Dolphin’s Screen Reader as my primary access software.

caliber is a little tricky to use as Narrator loses focus especially when
selecting your output format. If you Tab and Shift Tab out of and back into
the format list you can make your selection and do the convert. While not
ideal, it certainly can be used.

Thanks, Richard. I can confirm that I successfully downloaded Codex 2.1.1 by
right clicking your link and saving as to my Downloads\Software folder. The
installation worked smoothly.

Anna and Allan,

OK, now if you want the slightly more recent version of codex, it works on my
site now.

Funny thing, when you don’t put the entire file name in the html link code;
things don’t work. Duh!

I just tested it and it works now.

I’m glad you got the file converted.

James Scholes did the version 2.1 in 2016 to fix some issues that I cannot
quite remember the details of, but for future reference if 2.0 doesn’t work,
try 2.1.

Later,

Richard

Hello Alan and Richard and Malcolm,

Thank you all for your help. Alan, I had no problems downloading your Codex
link. I needed sighted help to sign into the Kindle app because the only thing
I could do myself was select the Amazon store. Fortunately, the app was
accessible once I was signed in. I was able to download my book and convert it.
There is real text there, alleluia! It's going to take some editing to make it
easy to read because (not surprisingly) the Hebrew came out as gibberish, but
it should be workable. Thanks again to all of you!

All the best,

Anna

Hi Richard,

When I right clicked and chose to Save link as on your Codex 2.1.1 link, I got
a file named Codex 2.1.1 setup with no extension. When I attempted to rename it
with a .exe at the end and execute it, I received a file is corrupt error
message. I’ll wait till tomorrow and try again.

Alan and Anna,

The 2.0 version doesn't work as well; but have you tried a right click and save
file as?

I will fix it by the morning.

I may just put both the Kindle and Codex files in a zip file so people can grab
them both at once.

Hi Marilyn,

I’m quite familiar with that area although I must confess that I’m not
particularly knowledgeable concerning Peppin County. I have a nephew in Eau
Claire, a niece in Chippewa Falls and friends in Menomonie. And I have been to
both Menomonie and Eau Claire. That is a nice part of the state even though
the winters aren’t much better than in Bayfield County.

Hi Holly,

Thanks for your tip, I’m sure I’ve tried that to no avail. And if it did work
for Wisconsin, it would still be a problem when trying to add the birth year
for many of my pals (1940s, 1950s & 1960s).
Thanks just the same!
