Issue With Zoom and iPhone App

2023-06-11 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I am a newcomer to this list.

I am a reasonably competent user of the Apple iPhone series since
2019--starting with the iPhone 8 and now using the iPhone SE 2022. I
have been using the Zoom app for the iPhone almost since the beginning
of my experience in 2019.  The app was very accessible and interfaced
well with all aspects of the VoiceOver screen reader app until March of
2023. With that Zoom upgrade sometime in March of this year, the ability
of VoiceOver to identify the current speaker as the conversation
progresses has been lost on my iPhone. In the past if multiple people
were speaking and if you had the focus centered on the area where the
video appears, you would d hear VoiceOver reacting as follows:

Displaying Joe Smith's video (after he stops speaking)
displaying Mary Jones' video (after she stops speaking)
displaying Bob Green's video (and so on.)

Now, all I hear is my own screen name. At times when the speaker
changes, I hear some odd speech which sighted people who are observing
do not see. I am not sure quite what is being said but it involves
numbers and references to e-mail and other disjointed things.

This issue is extremely inconvenient--particularly in a large group of
strangers in a Zoom communication. I now cannot be sure who exactly is
talking and therefore cannot address questions to particular people.

Someone suggested changing an item under meeting settings that says:
'self video mirror' and by default it is checked as active. I unchecked
this, but this did not solve the issue.

Has any visually impaired person on this list noticed this issue and if
so is there a solution? I have already written to the Apple
accessibility people and they said they weren't aware of what was going
on and that I should contact Zoom itself. I did this and with both the
Zoom general UI e-mail address s well as the app developer in the app
store and have received no response.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What if we could use apps like Envision A I, Seeing A I, Be My Eyes, or Aira
with this device? And this is just the start. We do not know what apps might
be developed in the future. No one can say exactly what will happen, but the
potential is definitely there.

And I agree, the price is expensive. But so is other tech like the Envision
Glasses for $2,500 to $3,500, and the Orcam for over $4,000. I think both of
these devices are good ones and offers a lot of help to many people. But this
new Vision Pro from Apple has the potential of being so much more than either

Re: Printing out checks from your phone

2023-06-11 Thread Kelly Pierce
When I need to send a paper check to someone I use the free bill pay
service offered by both my bank and brokerage. I type the payee’s
name, address and telephone number. I can also add an account number.
The service prints it as a check, places it into an envelope, adds a
stamp, and mails the check.

Printing out checks from your phone

2023-06-11 Thread Kathy Brandt
In case of interest: a question from another list about accessible check
writing programs prompted me to look at what might be in the app store, given
it is getting harder to replace typewriter ribbons. Among other offerings I
found something called Check Writer. You have to work in landscape mode. You
can put in account information to save as a default, save what you’ve done to
checkbook, and when you put in the numerical amount, the way it is supposed to
be in words is done automatically. Extraneous odd characters at first word
generated, but there was a place in settings to delete those, so, making up a
fake account, I got the verification that what I am producing looks like an
actual check. Now it remains to see how this works with the options of check
stock paper That you have to use to be excepted by a bank. Wondered if any of
you had experience with Check Writer or any similar apps.

Reminders in iOS 17 Realizes It's The Best Shopping List, 9 to 5 Mac

2023-06-11 Thread M. Taylor
Friday, June 9, 2023 at 2:01 PM

Reminders in iOS 17 realizes it's the best shopping list

Reminders has been my one true shopping list since it landed on the iPhone
in iOS 5. In iOS 17, the app fully embraces that part of its identity.
Second only to controlling media on HomePod, my main Siri usage over the
years has been adding items to my shopping list. "Hey Siri, add [whatever I
need] to the shopping list."

The only hiccup I've ever faced is when Siri started responding by saying it
added an item to my "shopping list-list." I changed the list name to just
shopping as a fix. Oh, and I've recently had to tango with Personal Requests
and voice identification on the HomePod. Whatever I needed to remember when
that happened got forgotten.

I love the simple integration with Siri and having Reminders on every Apple
device. Being able to share a shopping list with others can also be useful.
More recently, Reminders has added templates support so can always start
with the same list if you haven't shopped in a while. There's also an option
to print a shopping list if you prefer digital input and a traditional list
in the supermarket.

Reminders learns a new trick specific to shopping lists in iOS 17, iPadOS
17, watchOS 10, and macOS Sonoma.
"Grocery Lists automatically sort items into categories to make shopping
easier," says Apple. "Change how items are grouped, and the list remembers
your preferences."
I wondered how this feature worked before poking around in the app. My guess
was that maybe I needed to rename my list from Shopping to Grocery List.
Fortunately, it's a little more clever.

Any list can be considered a grocery list. That's useful if you have lists
for different stores and still want automatic sorting. Reminders now lets
you assign a list type: standard or groceries.
This is done with the three-dot circle button in the top right corner of the
list on iPhone and iPad. Tap the Show List Info button from the popover menu
to access list type. Mac users can find list type while viewing the list
from View and Show List Info from the menu bar.
Set your list type to grocery, and the rest is magic. Adding common grocery
items will automatically categorize them in groups so shopping is made
easier.
Optionally, you can rearrange categories manually in case you want to match
the order to match your store. You can also add new categories or switch to
a new column layout view that groups categories vertically.

In the first beta release, iOS 17 includes these grocery categories:
beverages; produce; meat; frozen foods; wine, beer, and spirits; breads and
cereals; pasta, rice, and beans; dairy, eggs, and cheese; sauces and
condiments; personal care and health; and household items.
By default, Reminders will hide any categories that don't include at least
one item. You can turn that off if you prefer to see each category when
planning your shopping trip.

If Reminders doesn't recognize where an item belongs, it will group it in a
category called Other. You can manually drag items out of Other to sort them
where they belong. There's also an option to create your own categories.
Just don't expect sorting to work automatically. I tested this by creating a
category called art supplies and adding paint brush to the shopping list. It
lands in Other but can be sorted to the right list manually.

Categories are synced and supported on each version of the Reminders app.
The only limitation is no column support on Apple Watch, but that's
reasonable.
In my testing, automatic sorting mostly worked as expected. Orange juice
went to beverages, tooth brush went to personal care, and trash bags went to
household items. It's the items that don't get sorted that exposes the
feature's limitations. For example, "tooth paste" doesn't get sorted but
"toothpaste" does. AA batteries, candles, and Windex all end up unsorted by
default.

Another funny behavior is acetone (fingernail polish remover) ends up on the
wine, beer, and spirits list. Take my advice: That's no way to start the
weekend.

All in all, iOS 17 treats Reminders well for folks like me who rely on it
for managing a shopping list. The software is currently in beta and
officially comes out in the fall.

tvOS 17 Helps You Hear What People Are Saying in Shows, When Using HomePods as Speakers, 9 to 5 Mac

2023-06-11 Thread M. Taylor
Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 7:04 AM

tvOS 17 helps you hear what people are saying in shows, when using HomePods
as speakers

A common complaint of late is that it's hard to hear people in TV shows and
movies these days, with character voices buried behind the cacophony of
sound effects and background music found in modern productions.

One of the smaller changes coming in tvOS 17 is an audio enhancement option
to help mitigate these cases, available for users of Apple TV 4K with paired
HomePod speaker setups.
This feature is exclusive to Apple TV 4K with home theater audio mode using
HomePod (second-generation) speakers. It is not offered for the original
HomePod or HomePod mini (probably because the single speaker design cannot
sufficiently render different output channels).

It also appears to only be available with apps that use the standard system
video player. You activate it through the Sound menu above the progress bar,
with the Enhance Dialogue option next to the long-standing Reduce Loud
Sounds option.

Apple says enabling the Enhance Dialogue option analyzes audio being played
and separates the actors' speech from effects and background music,
"bringing dialogue forward to the center channel".

If you want to try out this feature right now, you will need to install the
tvOS beta on Apple TV and install the HomePod beta (which necessitates
installing a limited distribution AppleSeed profile). Otherwise, wait until
the fall when these new OS's ship to all customers.
Other Apple TV software features coming this year include FaceTime via
Continuity Camera, redesigned Control Center, third-party VPN support and
more.

I have done well with Apple stock, since I bought it in either 2017 or 2018,
and the thing that really helped is that it split four to one. So I have four
times as many shares as I once had, and if it keeps climbing like it is now, it

Buying one as an investment might not be a bad idea, just make sure you never
even crack the seal of the box. Considering a few original iPhones in that
condition sold for between $40,000 and $65,000 after what, 16 years or so, not
bad.
The original iPhone cost $499 or $599 back in 2007 depending on configuration,
so even if you paid $599 and you sold it for about $40,000 after 16 years that
would mean an interest rate of 30% compounded annually.
Of course nobody could have predicted that and I just read that if you had
bought $3,000 worth of Apple stock in January of 2007 when Steve Jobs announced
the iPhone, that would be worth over $139,000 today, also a pretty good
investment and at a little over 27% interest compounded annually not far behind
what you could have made if you still had an unopened original iPhone.

Well Ms. Arnold; I have to ask, exactly what did you do to place an Emoji into
your text?

I assume you were in the “Message area” of the text when you tried to include
an Emoji. And, of course, you activated the “Emoji button.”

At that point, you would select the Emoji(s) you wanted to include in your
message and double tap each one as it was selected. You should have found said
Emojis were included in you text.

BTW: Emojis can be included in any of the “text edit fields” one might
encounter on an iPhone. I use them quite liberally in Notes, Mail () and
other apps that deploy the on-screen keyboard.

Re: Emoji's

2023-06-11 Thread Lyne
Hello,
If you never went to settings, general, keyboard and memojis you should go
there and turn off memojis. It will be easier.
After, when you will go to emoji keyboard you will find all categories at
bottom and emojis will be there by Colins

And just to add this, if you buy one of these first VR headsets for $3,500 they

Buying one as an investment might not be a bad idea, just make sure you never
even crack the seal of the box. Considering a few original iPhones in that
condition sold for between $40,000 and $65,000 after what, 16 years or so, not
bad.
The original iPhone cost $499 or $599 back in 2007 depending on configuration,
so even if you paid $599 and you sold it for about $40,000 after 16 years that
would mean an interest rate of 30% compounded annually.
Of course nobody could have predicted that and I just read that if you had
bought $3,000 worth of Apple stock in January of 2007 when Steve Jobs announced
the iPhone, that would be worth over $139,000 today, also a pretty good
investment and at a little over 27% interest compounded annually not far behind
what you could have made if you still had an unopened original iPhone.

lmao this is only the first gen relax. People talked the same trash about the
IPhone and now they sell like hotcakes. I am sure the price will come down over
time and this will be refined into one badass device. I plan on buying one of
these and holding on to it as a collectors item. Who knows what it will be in
10 years. I personally am hoping for a dive pod to really get full emersion.
