Mark on iPhone 14 Pro Max Voice Over Gestures and the Kindle App for both iOS and iPad OS, Lately

2023-07-12 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Okay, I know that there have been some threads on VO gestures, recently but
I've kind of gotten lost on who is saying what so, I will share my
experience, within the last 10 days, or so.

On both my 14 Pro Max and my beloved iPAD Pro 10.5 2017, running the latest
OS, in the Kindle app, when on any given page of a title, if I don't touch
the screen just right (whatever that means), let's say to switch to Audible
narration, I will be immediately jumped all the way back to the title's
Table of Contents. This has happened more than 10 times on either device
and is quite jarring, to say the least.

I suspect this has something to do with the recent updates of the Kindle app
but cannot be certain.

>From time-to-time, Apple quietly pushes out various fixes for various model
display drivers, security fixes, etc. No doubt these quiet fixes may effect
VO performance, in some instances.

I can tell you that a few weeks ago, they pushed out a quiet display driver
update because there was a very subtle difference in how some screen refresh
changes were rendered.

On the morning after the update, two university testing-lab acquaintances
asked if I had noticed the change on my 14. While I could not have
described the difference I noticed, purse, I did notice that something about
the display rendering felt different.

My point is that we should all keep in mind that not every single change
Apple makes to the OS is publicized; especially where the flagship models
are concerned.

Then again, the problem may be with Amazon and the Kindle app.

For the past 2 days, I have not been able to reproduce the jump problem on
either my 14 Pro Max or my beloved iPad Pro 10.5 2017.

Just something to consider.

Mark

RE: A Big Hello and General Personal Apple-Related Updates from Mark

2023-07-12 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kelly,

This is wonderful information. Thank you for sharing it with us.

By the way, I love, love, love Micro Center. It is one of the few remaining
eclectic old-school brick & mortar computer and related technology stores left
in the US.

I bought a router a few weeks ago. I bought my old router in 2015 when I
changed Internet services. It actually was free with the modem I purchased.
In the last year, every few days, the router would stop working and need to be
reset. Earlier this year, my ISP increased my speed to 250 MBPS a second and
my router was not coming close to this speed. I searched online and learned
the problem was very likely the router and not the modem. I searched on Google
for the best router and chose the top ranked router from PC Magazine. This was
the Asus Rt-AX86U Pro. I found my local Micro Center retailer had some in stock
and traveled over there. I printed out the specification sheet from the Micro
Center website and handed it to the sales nerd in the router area in a brick
and mortar retail location the size of a grocery store. None of my routers
were on the shelves. When he looked at my paper, he exclaimed “This is a good
router!” the $269 router was so desirable by criminal shoplifters that it was
in the back of the store in a secure storage area. He returned a few minutes
later and brought the “good router” and me to a cashier where I bought the item.

The signal is strong. The router is on the top floor of a Chicago bungalow and
the signal is strong and reliable in the basement,
backyard, and garage. I am glad to have paid more money for a solid
and strong signal and performing product. Yes, it can be the center of a mesh
network and guest channels are possible. Asus has an app and Web based router
Interface that I used to set it up successfully, including choosing a network
name and password. I would strongly recommend this router for a multi person
household.

2023-07-12 Thread M. Taylor
Of course, you are correct, my friend.

Now that I think about it, I think my biggest fear about becoming a ham was
having to learn Morris code. In all of the television shows and movies, etc.
I've seen, Morris seems so complicated and mysterious.

As a very kind list member informed me, off-list, earlier today, one does not
need to learn Morris, any longer in order to be a ham.

Still, I think I'd like to try my hand at learning Morris code.

Hi,

You know, there are not a great many things on my bucket list but one of the
items is becoming a ham.

I have wanted to become a ham for over 30 years but have not done so, to be
honest, because of my fear of failing the licensing tests.

Now I don't know much about it but back in the 80s I had a couple of friends
who wanted to get their licenses but failed to do so.

I don't want to go off topic, on this, but if anyone of you hams would like to
send me the steps on how to go about getting a license and an blind and/or low
vision accessible way to go about it, send me a reply, off-list, as I would
greatly appreciate it.

Mark, being the ham radio op that I am, I can't resist the temptation to
suggest you get a ham radio license. That would enable you to use a "handy
talky" which would allow for great communication. The two of you might have
been able to use an app called echolink.

Subject: Wishing for a Simple WalkieTalkie App for iOS

Hello Everyone,

Earlier this weekend I and a friend were up in the San Francisco airport
waiting on a flight back to Los Angeles.

As we had quite a bit of time before our flight, we decided to explore the
airport, separately, and meet back at the gate after a While.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to actually use the Walkie Talkie
app on our Apple Watches to stay in touch.

It didn't work as well as I had hoped. For one thing, there were so many
people crowded in the airport that I couldn't hear the speaker on the watch
when she tried to reach me. Add the ambient noise of all the people, coupled
with the endless and continuous flight announcements, and, for me, at least, it
was an impossible situation. I had to hold my wrist against my ear and I felt
silly doing it and my arm got tired, very quickly.

Second, when I tried to use my Airpods to connect directly to the watch???
Well, let's just say that my VoiceOver / Walkie Talkie app experience was not a
good one.

Although I have used the walkie talkie app many, many times, when at home, this
was the first time I had tried using it out in the wild, as it were.

She told me that she could not hear me on her watch, either, for the same
reason. Now she has quote, normal, quote hearing, relative to mine; so I know
that the problem was not completely owing to my poor hearing.

So, the question:

Can you recommend a simple push-to-talk walkie talkie app that will work on
iPhone?

When I search the app store I see so many but really have no idea of which one
is best for VoiceOver users.

Now I just want a simple app that works as much like the walkie talkie app on
the watch but, of course, works on the phone.

I read, somewhere, that Microsoft Team has a pretty good walkie talkie app
feature but I'm not certain if it will work in a non-enterprise scenario,
between only 2 people.

Just so you know, we ended up using text messages to stay in contact in the
airport but it would have been nice to use a more direct voice interface.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Mary,

I appreciate that you looked on my app on Android.

If you read my posts I expect that at least 90% of current Voice Dream Reader
won’t switch.

However I also expect that 99% of new users will use Speech Central. Let’s be
honest, if you have never ever used any app and your mind wasn’t accommodated
to Voice Dream specific design for years, would you pay 80$/year for it or
would you pick Speech Central for free?
I don’t see what is your problem that I try to reach to people that need this
information in render to help them.

As said again I don’t have any problem with anyone using Voice Dream. But I do
have the problem on people commenting that it is worth 80$/year while my app is
not worth of a single download even that it has many features that Voice Dream
doesn’t have and can be left on device as the second app if nothing else.

Regarding the work on the app, I do plan to release by the end of the year new
version that will have more new features than cumulative Voice Dream updates in
the last five years. Hopefully that’s enough?

As said again I don’t have any problem with anyone using Voice Dream. But I
do have the problem on people commenting that it is worth 80$/year while my
app is not worth of a single download even that it has many features that
Voice Dream doesn’t have and can be left on device as the second app if
nothing else.

Regarding the work on the app, I do plan to release by the end of the year
new version that will have more new features than cumulative Voice Dream
updates in the last five years. Hopefully that’s enough?

Applause Group may decide not to handle Voice Dream Reader at 40,000$/month and
thus far they have hard time to go above that. Corporation can hardly have even

Regarding the sustainability, that is a fake narrative. Winston was giving
interviews that his family is living well from Voice Dream, and assuming that
SensorTower doesn't lie, total sales were 40,000$/month.

Just to be clear it isn't too much for the American developer (but certainly
not too little either). But it is also true that the app can be sustainable in
India for even less than 5000$ a month, so even the app that costs 5$/lifetime
could be sustainable in some circumstances.

But for American products the most of the money goes into the marketing. If you
start to buy App Store ads, you need to pay 2$ per click on the ad for the US
consumer. And Winston did that and as such he paid at least 10$ to get the
users (assuming that he was a champion in conversion so it could be more). If
you go into such costs then your business can quickly become unsustainable.

Just to note that at the start those ads were priced reasonably so many people
jumped in, but as prices went up Apple started to squeeze out nearly all their
money and devs kept pushing the price increase to end consumers.

At the moment I don't have access to those analytics products so I can't say if
Voice Dream is buying the ads now (unfortunately I price my app very low to
help people so I need to be careful about all expenses). But with 80$/year

One question for Richard, how he would describe this.

Winston said at the launch of the Mac app that he had spent most of the
time in last two years in building this app. Right after that he said that
maintenance of the app takes too much time and he has hard time to keep up
with that and that’s why all changes are needed.

Do I miss something or he clearly said that for two years he put very
little effort in updating the iOS app and everything worked properly? There
is still a blog post on that so everything can be checked.

Mark

RE: Addition to the saga RE: iPhone not responding well to my touch gestures

2023-07-12 Thread Carolyn Arnold
Back about five or so years ago, when I had the original SE, I had that
problem, when at our Senior Center, which is down low and in woods. I certainly
could not call out with Siri, but usually could, when I made my calls myself,
as the customer service guy at Consummer Cellular, my carrier at the time,
advised me to do. Therefore, I acquired the good habit of doing that. Still, I
missed some calls that came while there.

Good morning,

For a few weeks now, I have been dealing with a very annoying issue on my
phone. When I do something like swipe or other Voiceover gestures with my
finger, things start out OK, but after a few instances, there is a sort of jump
or crash that takes me one layer back or to the very top of where I started,
and I need to start over again. It is annoying when I’m looking at something
like a website or Social Media and then the jump happens.

Also, when I input text using Braille mode, I won’t get more than two sentences
into what I’m writing, and then it jumps and changes modes, making me need to
go back to the rotar and go back to Braille mode.

I don’t think that speed has much to do with what’s going on, but I’ve tried
slowing down, which doesn’t always work for me. I just know that something’s
got to give because this continuous jumping around or going back a page or
layer doesn’t make me productive at all!

Has this happened to anyone else? What might be happening here, and what can I
try to fix it? I’ve not seen this behavior until a few weeks ago.

Jim

Braille screen input is definitely flaky in this iOS release. I have a similar
experience to what you describe where suddenly bsi will just turn itself off in
the middle of brailling. Also it seems I can't use tabletop mode at all. The
letters just will not form correctly.

Subject: iPhone not responding well to my touch gestures

Jim

Well, there is one other thing that I've been told about now.

For some weird reason, sometimes, calls I receive don't register. Several times
during convention, and again yesterday, people have told me that they tried
calling me but that it went to voicemail. Most of the time, I don't even hear
the phone ring, and the actual call doesn't register.

Now yesterday, I did hear someone try calling me but when I tried answering, it
was as though nobody was calling. Very strange stuff going on. And, it doesn’t
happen with all calls. I haven’t messed with any settings that I know of, and I
have been using my phone as I always do. Very strange.

Braille screen input is definitely flaky in this iOS release. I have a
similar experience to what you describe where suddenly bsi will just
turn itself off in the middle of brailling. Also it seems I can't use
tabletop mode at all. The letters just will not form correctly.

Re: Addition to the saga RE: iPhone not responding well to my touch gestures

2023-07-12 Thread Kimberly Gardner
This phone not ringing is happening to me as well ever since the most
recent update to iOS. It doesn't always happen or even with any
predictable pattern. I had the same problem a couple of years ago. I
don't recall which iOS it was, but eventually it just went away.

Addition to the saga RE: iPhone not responding well to my touch gestures

2023-07-12 Thread Jim Portillo
Well, there is one other thing that I've been told about now.

For some weird reason, sometimes, calls I receive don't register. Several
times during convention, and again yesterday, people have told me that they
tried calling me but that it went to voicemail. Most of the time, I don't
even hear the phone ring, and the actual call doesn't register.

Now yesterday, I did hear someone try calling me but when I tried answering,
it was as though nobody was calling. Very strange stuff going on. And, it
doesn't happen with all calls. I haven't messed with any settings that I
know of, and I have been using my phone as I always do. Very strange.

Subject: iPhone not responding well to my touch gestures

Good morning,

For a few weeks now, I have been dealing with a very annoying issue on my
phone. When I do something like swipe or other Voiceover gestures with my
finger, things start out OK, but after a few instances, there is a sort of
jump or crash that takes me one layer back or to the very top of where I
started, and I need to start over again. It is annoying when I'm looking at
something like a website or Social Media and then the jump happens.

Also, when I input text using Braille mode, I won't get more than two
sentences into what I'm writing, and then it jumps and changes modes, making
me need to go back to the rotar and go back to Braille mode.

I don't think that speed has much to do with what's going on, but I've tried
slowing down, which doesn't always work for me. I just know that something's
got to give because this continuous jumping around or going back a page or
layer doesn't make me productive at all!

Has this happened to anyone else? What might be happening here, and what can
I try to fix it? I've not seen this behavior until a few weeks ago.

Jim

Tonight, I tried finding Light Detector, and could not find it. I haven't used
it, and now that I think about it, I think I'll try to see if there still is a
video, where I can read about it. But, do any of you know just how I find
stuff? I tried swiping up in Channel and kind of had an uncertain time of it
and did not find Light Detector. Thanks for any help.
