Hi Everyone,

I updated last night too, and I'm also using a 4S. Bluetooth most definitely
was turned on after the update when it hadn't been before I did it.

Annoying Problem With My 4S

2014-06-13 Thread Desi Noller
Ever since iOS 7, when I am on a phone call, even if I barely, and I mean
barely, move my phone while it is up to my ear, speaker phone mode will kick
in! This causes my voice to cut in and out, making it very frustrating not
only for the person I'm talking to, but for me as well! Is there any way to
disable this feature permanently? It seems to be getting worse! I can't wait
until iOS 8! Also, I will be able to upgrade my phone in mid September!
Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: IOS 8 and keyboard questions.

2014-06-12 Thread Desi Noller
I believe that Apple is adding their own 6-dot keyboard, and personally, I sure
hope they do, and that you don't have to be such a contortionist to input
Braille as you do with mBraille and as you did with Braille Touch! There has
just got to be a better way to do it, and I'm hoping Apple has figured it out!

 Hello list,
I have read online that there will be a new option in IOS8 that we will
have a choice to use alternative keyboard such as MBraille or Fleksy.
I would like to ask those of you who have beta version installed is it
necessary to have MBraille or Fleksy installed on I-device being able to
use an alternative keyboard or alternative keyboards will be the option
in the rotor and the apps like Fleksy or MBraille will not have to be
 installed?
I realize beta testers are not allowed to provide such information
before new IOS will come out, but I am asking this question for my
friends. In case there will be a must to purchase MBraille to access
alternative keyboards option, I would like to let them know this fact
because as many of you know MBraille is not the cheapest app, so they
can save money in advance and purchase it if necessary.
Thank you very much for your help.
 With kind regards
 Maria

If the KNFB reader app came with some sort of durable tool for positioning

It will be interesting to see how the app is priced. People tend to feel
$20.00 is a very high price for an app, or at least I do. I wonder what

Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard

2014-05-25 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Everyone,

I was recently having a discussion with a friend about how to type on the
on-screen keyboard of the iPhone. Personally, I don't particularly like to use
a special program for this like, for instance, mBraill or Fleksy. I just want
to use the regular keyboard. Dictation can be useful, but of course,
sometimes, it's just nice to be able to type something relatively privately. I
have built up some speed over the past 3 years, but I would like to get faster.
I generally hold my phone in my left hand, and use my right index finger to
type, anchoring my thumb down where the connector is at the bottom of the
phone. I'm interested to know how others who type using the regular on-screen
keyboard, enter your text. I do happen to use Touch Typing mode, but I would
also be interested in what typing mode you use. And, does anyone else besides
me just use the regular on-screen keyboard for their typing needs?

Thanks!

I generally use the on screen keyboard, but that's just because I forced

before I started experimenting with other apps and input methods. Similarly,
I wanted to check out the Notes, Calendar and other built in apps before
comparing them to apps I could get from the App Store. I'm not opposed to
grabbing any apps from the App Store though. There's a reason why there are
like a million apps in the App Store and it's all about finding the ones that
you prefer and make using your phone easier. I still use some built in apps,
but I've also replaced a few with App Store apps that have features you don't
get in the built in apps or I just prefer using a bit. I haven't gotten
around to checking out the different alternative keyboards.

As far as typing, I put my two hands together palms up with the fingers from
my right hand over the fingers from my left hand. I rest the iPhone in my
palms and type with my thumbs. I use the touch typing method. With practice,
I'm pretty good at just landing on the character I want to type. I don't do
as much hunting and pecking as I did when I just used my pointer finger. When
using my pointer finger, I preferred the split typing method since I would
tend to slide my finger from character to character, and I didn't want to
lift it from the screen. I think with two thumbs, the bottom corners and
edges of the iPhone in your palm, you have more physical spacial references
making it easier for your thumbs to just know where to land to find the
character you want. When using my pointer finger, I don't think I ad as many
physical points of reference, so I didn't want to lose my place by lifting
 it from the screen.

 Hi Mark,

The 2 apps were The Great Courses app and the MPRNews app.

I don't have copies. Basically, both reviews were about the same.

The title of the reviews were something like this: This app is not accessible
to or usable by the blind.

The content of the reviews were something like this: Buttons on this site are
not labelled for reading by VoiceOver, the onboard iOS screen reading
software. Links are labeled by image title, such as 1050 jpg image which do
not provide meaningful information for blind users to determine the nature of
the link. These issues could likely be corrected without a great deal of time
or effort. Please refer to the Developers App toolkit information regarding
accessibility at Apple. Please give serious consideration to making your
 website accessible to the blind.

For the Great Courses app, I also included the following at the beginning of
the review content: I have been in phone contact and email contact with
customer service on 4 occasions since October 2013. I received an email
message today from customer service indicating they had no plans to make
their app accessible to the blind.

 Hello Keith,

I, too, have experienced this phenomenon.

If I may ask, what are the names of the two apps you reviewed?

Also, if you saved a copy of the reviews, would you consider posting them on
this list? I, for one, would like to read them.

 Hi,

I've sent reviews on 2 different apps this past week, but neither were
 posted.

I've written iTunes Store Support about this. They confirmed my reviews were
sent but that apparently they were not posted as the Developers Review
Boards must not have allowed that.

Here is the comment from the iTunes Store Support message: Keith, as I
investigate. There are several reason why your reviews are not posted,
actually your reviews have bent sent but it depends on the developers review
boards to approve it. I'm sorry I can't provide you details regarding this
because we are just for billing, downloading and purchasing. I hope you
 understand us.

Does this sound right? Seems like it would defeat the purpose of App Reviews
if Developers can have Review Boards to determine if they'll approve the
review before allowing it to be posted.

By the way, both of my reviews of apps were negative, as neither app was
 accessible.

 Thanks, Keith

Brailliant BI 40 For Sale

2013-12-05 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Everyone,

I am selling my Brailliant BI 40. I’m asking $2,000 for it. It is in
excellent condition! It comes with a leather case from Executive Products, and
a USB cable. It is under warranty until July. It can connect by either
Bluetooth or via USB. Battery life is up to 20 hours when using Bluetooth! It
can be charged with any standard USB charger, as well as by connecting it to
your computer! It also works beautifully with iOS devices, Macs, and PC’s!

If you’re interested, or have questions, please contact me off list at:
mailto:desiandca...@q.com

Thank you so much for your consideration! Remember, this is not a topic for
list discussion. The only reason I’m posting this here is that I know I can
reach a lot of blind folks who use iOS devices, and Macs, or who know other
people that do.

Deleting Songs From My iPod Touch

2013-12-03 Thread Desi Noller
Good Evening!

A couple of months back, I subscribed to iTunes Match. I currently have 4,012
songs there. Previously I had stored all of my music in my iTunes Library on
my iMac, and all songs were also stored on my iPod Touch 4th Gen 64 gig. Once
I had all of my music in iTunes Match I thought the space taken up on my iPod
would be freed up. I discovered however, that I actually still have 3,427
songs physically stored on my iPod. How can I get them off my iPod so that I
can just stream them using iTunes Match? I tried turning iTunes Match off on
my iPod and then turning it back on a little while later. I was asked if I
wanted the library replaced to which I answered yes. When that was done, I
went back and checked under Settings/General/About, and discovered that it
still says I have 3,427 songs, using 29 plus gigs. Any help with this would be
much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

iTunes Match Question

2013-10-11 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Everybody,

I subscribed to iTunes Match recently and mostly I'm loving it, but I'm
wondering if some more experienced users can help me with something. I chose
an album of one of my favorite artists to play while I was exercising, but some
of the song titles seem to be dimmed and when I start playing the album, the
dimmed titles are skipped. All of my music is legitimate and all of the songs
are listed, but I'm wondering what could be going on here, and how I can get
the dimmed song titles to be active? Can someone help?

Thanks!

Re: iTunes Match Question

Hi Anna,

It seems that you were right on the money! Apparently, I still had some 730
songs to be uploaded to the Cloud. For some reason, the first 3,282 songs
uploaded quite efficiently, and then the progress bar showed 100%. I thought
it was done! These last 730 songs seem to be uploading extremely slowly! Is
this normal? If they continue to upload this slowly, I'll be here until next
week at this time! LOL! Any further thoughts on this would be most
appreciated!

songs which are in your library and which match with what iTunes has are not
actually uploaded. They are simply made available via your iCloud/iTuns
Match account. Only songs which iTunes doesn't offer, maybe small local
bands which put out a CD that is not for sale on iTunes are actually
 uploaded to your iCloud account.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

 Hi Anna,

It seems that you were right on the money! Apparently, I still had some 730
songs to be uploaded to the Cloud. For some reason, the first 3,282 songs
uploaded quite efficiently, and then the progress bar showed 100%. I
thought it was done! These last 730 songs seem to be uploading extremely
slowly! Is this normal? If they continue to upload this slowly, I'll be
here until next week at this time! LOL! Any further thoughts on this would
 be most appreciated!

 Hi,

If you just got iTunes Match, it's possible that not all the tracks in
your library have been uploaded or matched yet. Choose Match in the radio
buttons where you can select songs, artists, etc., and then check the LCD
section to see whether music is still being uploaded. If Match isn't an
option, it means all the music should be available.

Re: iTunes Match Question

2013-10-11 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Arnold,

Thanks for these tips. I'm feeling good because I did have the settings the
way you suggested already!

Now, another question. How long should uploading my music collection to the
iTunes Match service take? It has been about 4 hours since I started this
afternoon, and only 20 songs have been uploaded. I still have over 600 songs
to go! I did check system preferences and turn off my energy saving settings
so that my computer wouldn't have to keep being awakened. Should this be
necessary?
Thanks for any and all help with this!

I don't know that the following will help you, but it can't hurt. I had

occasionally chop up an album, putting some of the tracks in the album's
list, while other tracks were in other places. This seemed to get worse with
IOS 7. I was quite disillusioned about it, until I found the following. Under
settings, music, turn on the option that says show album artist. I didn't
know what this meant, but now that I have turned it on, it puts all the
tracks for the album together, at least in the ones I have checked that
weren't being shown together before. Also, be sure that show all music is
on. The reason I think it might help you is that, in the settings for music,
it says that it shows information for the music on your device, and in ICloud.

RE: Phone Not Ringing In Locked Screen

2013-10-02 Thread Desi Noller
Thanks to all who weighed in on the question I asked regarding my husband's
iPhone 4S not ringing while his screen was locked! It did turn out to be that
he had Do Not Disturb turned on. Fixing this did indeed fix the problem!
The odd thing is that neither of us uses the Do Not Disturb feature, and he
has no idea how it got turned on, but he is grateful to you all for directing
us to the right spot! All is right with his phone again now!

Phone Not Ringing In Locked Screen

2013-10-01 Thread Desi Noller
Good Evening! My husband has been missing some calls lately, and we were
perplexed as to why. He is running iOS 7 on an iPhone 4S. Anyway, what we
discovered is that when his screen is locked, his calls seem to be going
directly to VoiceMail rather than ringing. Does anyone have any ideas as to
what we can do to correct this? We have looked into all the settings we can
think of. Any help with this would be most appreciated!

Perkins Mini Braille Display Question

Hi Everybody,

Is anyone out there using a Perkins Mini Braille Display with your iDevice? I
understand they now work with Apple products, and I would love more information
about how they work from actual users. Thanks so much!

Re: MBraille - On the road experience

2013-09-03 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Wren and All,

I couldn't agree with you more! Neither do I wish to flame anyone in any way!
I must say though, that I think MBraille is worth its price and more! I think
people in blind society are pretty used to getting any number of things at a
reduced cost, or no cost at all! But, Harri is one individual person who has
taken his own time and extensive knowledge to provide something that is truly
effective! I'm sure he can't afford to do this out of the goodness of his own
heart, as much as he might want to do so! In short, I don't think the price is
over reaching at all!

Hi all, no offense meant here. So please don't take any. This is just another
way to look at it. If you bought a speech program for your PC it would cost
you upwards of $1000. In comparison MBraille only cost $30, so that might be
another way to look at the 30 Dollar expense. To me this app is well worth
it. Again this is just my opinion and I am not flaming anyone. God bless, Wren

I very seldom chime in on something like this, but I find the Mbraille app
the most useful app I have purchased. If someone is a good contracted
braille user, it will increase your speed in texting, creating documents,
writing emails and in doing numerous tasks. I thought when I bought the app
that it was only $15, but it may have been $30. As I understand it now, when
you download the fre version, it does allow you to use the texting feature.
I believe that for anyone who likes the ability to input using contracted
braille that this app is the answer, and I use it so much that when I need
to actually use the iPhone keyboard that I have to think twice to make sure
that I'm not trying to do braille input. I do recommend the free version to
play with for a while to make sure it fits your needs, but I can say it has
 done very well for me.

Sounds like it might be a good solution on a long road trip but I agree the
$30 price tag would mean it would have to be a very long trip to justify it.

Subject: MBraille - On the road experience

 Hi all,

Just wanted to convey a neat little MBraille experience. I had lunch with a
group of new friends. As one of these friends was driving me home, we began
driving on some rough road. I thought what a great chance to test typing
accuracy! I pulled out my iPod Touch 5th gen and began typing a message.

I first tried typing a 3 sentence paragraph using the touch typing keyboard
method, and I ended up making lots of mistakes and found it was difficult to
hear what I was typing (I was not wearing headphones). I didn't get past the
first sentence before getting a bit frustrated.

I turned on standard typing and found it was easier to type via split
typing, but I still could not hear the letters well and had I turned up the
volume I would have probably annoyed others so I did not do so.

Finally, I launched MBraille and found that typing the 3 sentences was not
only quickly accomplished, but I also found it very easy, and I had almost 0
 spelling errors.

I'm assuming the difference is that while touch typing and split typing, one
must very steadily hold the device in one hand while trying to type with the
other hand. This results in both hands simultaneously performing different
tasks. On the other hand, using MBraille, for the most part, both hands are
moving in synchrony and are placed almost 100% identically equally to one
another which facilitates holding the device and entering data as the space
one needs to interact with the device is much smaller (6 points rather than
26+ points associated with the letters on the keyboard).

After using MBraille I switched back to regular touch typing and standard
typing, and again I was having difficulty completing the typing task.

In short, whether bumpy road or not, MBraille does seem to offer a very
quick and hassle free typing experience.

I gotta say, it is still hard for me to pull the trigger on the price
because $30, to me and only me, seems a bit excessive for an app less than 1
meg in size. I hope this device goes on sale at some point as I'd definitely
 purchase it for $15 or $20. :)

 Two thumbs up for MBraille!

 Joseph

Re: Accessible Crosswords App

2013-09-02 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Andy,

That was a perfect explanation, and I just finished both rating the App and
writing a brief review. I would like to encourage all other users of Four Down
to do the same! The process was very accessible and friendly!

Thanks again for a really fun App! My husband and I just completed Puzzle 18
this morning!

 Hi Desi,

Thanks very much. I'll do my best to explain the steps.

You can rate an app in iTunes on your computer, or using the App Store app on
your iPhone or iPad. I'm going to assume you're using an iPhone. Please let
me know if that's not the case and I can have another go.

Open the App Store app. You now need to switch to the Search tab. VoiceOver
will get you there eventually by swiping, but there can be a lot of content
on the screen so it may take a while. It'll probably be easier to find it by
dragging your finger around the screen. The Search tab's at the bottom, where
tabs usually are. Double-tap to switch tabs as you usually would. On the
search screen there's a search field near the top of the screen. If you
search for Four Down it should be the first hit. Swiping will get you to a
heading called Four Down. Double-tap. Swiping will then get you to Reviews.
Double-tap again. Swiping will then get you to a Write a Review button.
Double-tap again to open the screen for rating the app. You may be prompted
for your Apple ID password at this point. On this screen there's an
adjustable rating where you can swipe up or down with a single finger to set
the number of stars from one to five. Once you've done that, there's a submit
 button in the top-right.

I hope my explanation of the steps is helpful. It's my first attempt at
explaining it to a VoiceOver user so apologies if it's not up to scratch.

 Thanks again,
 Andy

Using The Native Twitter App on the iPhone

2013-08-28 Thread Desi Noller
For those of you who use the native Twitter App on your iPhones: Is there a
way to keep VoiceOver focused? When I'm on the home screen reading my
timeline, focus keeps switching to the discover tab at the bottom of the
screen. I'm finding this to be extremely annoying! I can't find anything to
tweak in settings! Is there a way to get around this? Perhaps the issue will
be fixed in iOS 7, but in the meantime, I would love any suggestions! Is this
why people use other Apps to deal with Twitter? What does everyone recommend?
Thanks!

Re: ot trying to subscribe to mac visionaries list

2013-08-21 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Jo,

I have had the very same problem repeatedly! I've even gotten an on-screen
message telling me that I don't have permission to join! I can't figure out
how to get permission, so I'm guessing it's either a closed list or extremely
exclusive! Good luck! If you ever get on, would you be willing to share with
me how you did it?

Pairing a Bluetooth Speaker with iPad II

2013-08-13 Thread Desi Noller
Hi,
My husband is trying to pair his Bluetooth speaker with his iPad II. Though
the two have been paired before, the pairing doesn't want to work properly at
the moment. I'm trying to help him get his iPad to forget the device so that
we can start over afresh. I know how to do this with my phone, but can't find
an option for forgetting the device on his iPad. What am I forgetting to do?
:)

Take care, and thanks!

Perhaps the issue was the large screen, as the camera would have to

I completely agree! :) Was your metronome one that you were able to set for

Re: Looking For An Accessible App For Counting Down Seconds

2013-08-08 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Rob,

I did give Tempo a try this afternoon, but I wasn't having tremendous luck with
it. After I pressed play, the play/stop button seemed to disappear from the
screen, and the only way I could stop it was to delete it from the App
Switcher. In fairness though, I need to learn how to use it a little better,
so it could have been operator error! :)

Subject: Looking For An Accessible App For Counting Down Seconds

 Good Morning!

I have a Concept II Rowing Machine which I work out on every day. I have
used the timer built in to iOS, as well as a stand alone timer that I have,
but what I'm really looking for is something that will give me a beat at
every second so that I can keep my stroking rate even and at a certain
speed. I suppose it could even be a metronome if it were accessible and
easy to use. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: iAssociate Game Question

2013-08-06 Thread Desi Noller
Thank you so much! That seems to be a perfect solution! I hope it helped
other people playing the game too! If you get down to almost the end of a
game, sometimes it would be nice to see what they expect the answers to be. Is
there a way to do this?

I had this problem too. Someone suggested that I turn off hints and it seemed
to fix the problem. To turn off hints, do the following:
Double tap on the tab at the bottom of the screen labelled Levels.
Double tap on the button at the top labelled Settings.
Flick to where it says Switch. Show Hints Button, Show The Hints in the user
interface, switch button on. Double tap this to turn hints off.
 This should do the trick.
Double tap one of the tabs at the bottom to leave this screen.

Re: iAssociate Game Question

2013-08-05 Thread Desi Noller
It's quite okay! After reading your message, I went back in and when I
canceled the welcome screen, I was offered the option of disabling Game Center.
I honestly don't remember seeing that last night, but it sure could have been
there! Anyway, I did disable it and all is well! Thanks again!

Re: iAssociate Game Question

2013-08-05 Thread Desi Noller
I'm almost finished with Savor the Flavor, but an annoying thing has started to
happen. Often when I double-tap on the text field I want to enter my word in,
it jumps me down to the bottom where the hints button is. No matter how many

the hints button I think it will tell you. Maybe when you finish and run out
of hints you can select hints and it will say Barmore hints. I think that's
how it works. I do remember now. Select the hints button and it will say you
are out offense. Do you want to buy more hints if you tap the button again I
think it will let you do that.

If things haven't improved as far as reading Braille is concerned, I probably

in iBooks, but the last two or so lines from the previous page would appear
at the top, so there was repetition every time I switched screens, and each
screen was short, so it was bad for reading braille. It's nice for reading
with synthesized speech, though, and it's possible that reading with braille
has improved since; there have been at least a couple of updates since then.

within the app. It downloads the DAISY version, so you have access to any

Hi Anna,

Thank you so much! Have you had any experience using Voice Dream Reader? If
so, do you like one over the other, and what differences have you found?

 Hi,

I routinely read with my braille display using Read2Go. As long as I set it

the app. It downloads the DAISY version, so you have access to any navigation
built into the book, but the text is displayed in Grade 2, just as other text
on the iPHone is. Occasionally a book is marked up oddly, so that each
chapter title is considered its own section, so you have to move to the next
section to read the title and do that again to start reading the chapter, but
most of the time, it works fine.

 Best,

Hi Anthony,

I think a combination of things was happening. I hadn't realized that I would
be able to get list messages in my inbox before having my status approved by
the moderators, and then I was even further confused when my own messages

LOL! I hope that makes sense to somebody besides just me! LOL! Anyway,
things seem to be working well now with the list, and I'm very glad to be here!

Hi Ari,

Thank you so much! I will check this App out for sure! When I wasn't sure
that my messages were getting through to the list, I continued to do some of my
own research, and ultimately, for the moment at least, I have been using
Dropbox with Plain text. It works fine as long as text files are all I need to
work with. It's definitely a different way of handling things, but I'm sure
I'll get used to it after some more time! :)

 As to your file-storage questions:
I use an appp called Notesy to take notes. I can't remember how much it
costs, but it's not too expensive--probably only a few bucks. The app has
some accessibility quirks, though I think they have more to do with VoiceOver
rather than with the app itself. You can work with files off-line, and they
can be synced to Dropbox if you use that. I do, and it's super easy to set up
and then forget about. :D Having your notes synced with Dropbox means that
you always have things backed up; you can also work with notes from your
computer if using this setup. I hope this helps you.

 Thanks,

RE: Using Read To Go For Reading Books In Braille On The iPhone

2013-08-01 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Scott,

LOL! I'm very lucky not to be able to get rid of you! :) Thank you so much
for the info regarding using Read To Go with my iOS devices and Braille
display. I've heard really good things about Voice Dream Reader, so I will
give it a good look before I decide which one to buy. It sounds like it would
be well worth the price simply for reading audio books! If anyone has used
Voice Dream Reader for reading Braille books I would love to know how the
experience is!

Scott, do the Kindle and iBooks Apps have in their documentation good
explanations of how to import Bookshare books? If not, maybe you would favor
us with a podcast about that? :)

Desi, who didn't reply to your original message because I'm now using my new
gmail address for this group, and am still figuring out the ins and outs of it
all!
