iOS 7.1 is now available for download via Over-the-Air Update and iTunes.

Since November of last year, members of the AppleVis Editorial Team have
been busy testing iOS 7.1 in all stages of the beta process. Beginning with
Beta 3, two of our team ran the betas on their primary devices and found it
to be a very enjoyable experience that only got better as the beta cycle
 continued

While no software from any manufacturer is ever bug-free, we were impressed
with the number of VoiceOver bug fixes in iOS 7.1 and applaud the Apple
Accessibility team for a job well done.

We have just posted a list to the AppleVis website of the new accessibility
features and accessibility improvements that we are aware of in iOS 7.1. As
always, it is entirely possible that we have overlooked something. So, if
you notice any other changes or have a question about something we did not
cover, please do post a comment.

To all the reviewers who are saying that the app HAS to be running to locate

log into the website to locate it or make it scream. Also that is not
lookouts issue it's apples. That is the way they set up the software to work.
It is a great and useful app!!!

vowels being cut off it sounds great. Yesterday afternoon I was out,
and I decided to make some phone calls while waiting to go home. I held
the home button in on my iPhone until I felt it vibrate, then I told it
the number to dial. To my surprise, the iPhone responded with
Samantha’s voice, not the Australian voice. Once the call was
connected, the Australian voice was back. What’s going on? Remember
that I’m using an iPhone 4, so Siri isn’t available to me.

 Just curious.

Re: 4 finger single tap bug?

Hi Wayne, I usually find the letter p and then the send button is right above

I, when I put 4 fingers toward the bottom of the screen I often hear
part of the keyboard. This mostly happens after I have received a
message from her and when the virtual keyboard is showing. This is an
annoying bug but not one to get real upset about, IMO. I then touch
near the bottom of the screen with 4 fingers and get to the send
button, where I can swipe left to the text area to write in a
response. As I say though, the 4 finger tap at the bottom of the
screen works most of the time for me. Running iOS 7 on an iPhone 5.

 Hi Dan,

The 4-finger tap is meant to take you to the last element on the screen
which in the case of the Inbox in the mail app is the Compose button at the
very bottom right. If you want to go to the last email all you have to do
 is
swipe left twice from Compose and you are on the last email.

I guess one could argue that maybe it should take you to the last item or
element in whichever particular container you are in since the iPhone now
does have Containers and the container which includes the Last Updated
time and the Compose button is separate from the container which contains
 all the messages.

devices, never thought about pressing the one on screen.

I am getting used to the current setup but can't say it is my favorite

 Hi,

All you said is true. But, that's not what I was getting at. I was
 saying,
why have the home screen as an option when all other apps have been
 close?
Just close the switcher automatically instead on displaying the
 homescreen
 in the app switcher.

app switcher and open another app instead of going on the home screen,

In fact, the visual representation for apps on app switcher is totally
 different from iOS 6.

 Hi,

But why have a visual representation at all when all other apps have
been closed? The app switcher in my opinion, should just close
automatically and go to the home screen since that is the only action
 left to perform.

For example, I have 2 apps running. in the app switcher, I will see
the 2 apps plus the home screen. Cool. But, once I've close those 2
apps, there is absolutely no function left to the app switcher but to
close it and return to the home screen. So, why then force the user
to perform a gesture or, press the physical home button when its a
logical inevitability that that is the next action the user will do?
This looks to me like a hold over from IOS 6 that is no longer needed
in IOS 7. Remember, In IOS 6, although all apps were closed from the
switcher, there was still a large list of things a person could still
do. Play/pause music, lock/unlock orientation, etc. But this is no
longer the case in IOS 7 since all these features have been moved to
 control center.

I think the Home option is an obvious way that sighted users can

 scrub that I know of.

Not sure what this one looks like on the screen. Will need to ask
 someone.

 read

So, how is the error rate in iOS 7 compared with that of iOS 6? It

 Alan,

I personally highly rate the cases from Tech21, they offer three styles for
the iPhone 5 and other models of iPhone / iPad etc.

These are; a band that only protects the side, leaving the back and front
exposed, useful if you're desperate to show off your Apple logo on the
reverse :)… Then the shell style which is a back and sides, I have this
type… and finally, a shell with leather folding flap that covers the front
 as well…

I personally did not go for the leather screen cover for several reasons…
Firstly, I've never yet, really should not have wrote that :), damaged the
screen of any of my iOS devices, but I have scratched, chipped and generally
marked the backs and sides, so these are the areas I consider require
protecting. I do not use a screen protector.

The Tech21 cases are unique in their protection over all other cases, they
add all but nothing by way of weight and mass to your device, only about a
few mil each side, yet they protect in a amazing way.

Tech21 use D3O impact technology, which is a revolutionary material invented
by the military to protect things, its now found in extreme sports wear and
 other things like that…

Basically, its coloured orange if you can see anything, not the case mark
you, just the D3O which of course is inside the case away from view.

What it does is spread the energy from an impact across the whole case
dispersing it. The material is relatively hard when in its relaxed state,
though upon impact it becomes a soft gel like substance.

I have broken a number of iOS devices before I started using these cases,
and can tell you now that they are both designed well, Aesthetically
pleasing, but, importantly add a whole load of protection without bulking up
 the device.

I've had better success in turning off voice over first and then using Siri
like a sighted person to send texts. So, if I really want to use her, I turn
off voice over, I press and hold home. When it beeps I say text blah and the
message. she responds with the message and if she should send it, I simply
say yes without having to tap the listen button and it gets sent.

Although i like Siri very much for many things, I can honestly say that
texting isn't one of them. But as I said, when I do, this is what works
 better.

 Hello Iona,

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. I discovered it a
 couple of days ago.

To those of you who may not know, When using Siri to send a text
message, the screen locks before completing the process. It does not
matter how long the auto-lock is set.

 NOTE 1:
If the message is short enough, only one word, for instance, Siri may
successfully send the text message. It may also work the first time
you attempt to send a message after powering on the device. However,
subsequent attempts with messages containing more than 5 words or so,
will time out before the message can be sent.

To create the bug, do the following:

 NOTE 2:
I use the center button on the included iPHone wired headset to
 interact with Siri.

 1.
Launch Siri and say something like, Send a message to Mark Taylor.
Siri will reply with something like, You said, send a message to Mark
 Taylor.
OK. I can send a message to Mark Taylor for you. What would you like
it to say? At this point, a text message dialog box is displayed and
Siri will say something like, To, Mark Taylor.

 2.
Initiate the Siri command and say something like, Hi Mark. How is
your day? I hope you are well. Siri will respond with something
like, You said, Hi Mark. How is your day? I hope you are well. I
updated your message. Ready to send it? Reply with cancel or send.

 NOTE 3:
For me more often than not, the screen locks at this point, before I
can send the message. I have also experienced the scenario when,
after initiating Siri and saying, Send, Siri will respond with
something like, You said Send. Okay, I will send it for you, only
to lock the screen, losing the message before it can be sent.

I strongly encourage those of you who have or can reproduce this bug
to either send a message to Apple at accessibil...@apple.com or call
 their accessibility hotline at: 877-204-3930.
